Chris Conte Thrown Outta The Club

September 25th, 2018

Mis-tackle for the ages.

Initially, Joe was going to give all the credit to reader “Easy” for the following: the now notorious Chris Conte thrown-outta-the-club play.

But just this afternoon Joe heard ESPN color man Jason Witten use that phrase so he gets the credit. (No, Joe does not have access to game broadcast audio in the press box at the Den of Depression, nor at away games.)

You know the play: Conte got stiff-armed and nearly tossed into the stands of the Den of Depression by Steelers tight end Vance McDonald as if Conte was hitting on a bouncer’s girlfriend at some thumping south Tampa hotspot on a Friday night.

Conte was anything but a favorite in the eyes of Bucs fans, and now he has turned into Villian No. 2 for Bucs fans (sadly, for the knuckledraggers who lurk among us, America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, is Villian No. 1).

And given how the Bucs defense tightened up after he left the game following the thrown-outta-the-club play, even reasoned Bucs fans are beginning to wonder if Conte should be on the field for the Bucs in the future (he is in the final year of his contract).

Joe has always gotten along with Conte. Fans loathe him. Joe never thought Conte was the next John Lynch but he surely wasn’t Sabby the Goat either. Fans believe he is Sabby the Goat who outkicked his coverage.

Someday, Joe will share a story he has confirmed from multiple sources that will explain why Conte (and others) sometimes got caught out of position. But the story would unfairly stain an innocent Bucs defender and Joe has no interest in unfairly giving a guy a scarlet letter for life.

There was and is no defending that indefensible play by Conte last night that led to a Steelers touchdown. Joe wonders if that play marks the beginning of the end in Tampa Bay for Conte?

  1. Rod Munch Says:

Conte stinks and has always stinked, there’s a reason Football Outsiders (who unlike PFF has some cred) put him on their all decade worst-of team. He’s terrible and has no place no the team.

Anywho I eagerly await the Conte defenders to once again come to his defense like they always do when I point out he’s literally the worst starting S in football, and wouldn’t make 90% of the rosters in the NFL yet he’s starting for the Bucs. Pitiful job by Licht not addressing this (and no, you can’t count on a 4th round rookie to come in and start a S, perhaps the hardest to learn position in football).

  2. D-Rome Says:

Conte is not as bad as people say he is, but that play was not a good look at all. Mike Smith’s play call in that situation didn’t do him any favors either.

  3. BucTrooper Says:

You will never convince me that there isn’t a player on 31 other practice squads who is better than Conte.

  4. Bucsfanman Says:

Earl Thomas got the same treatment against Zeke Elliot and the Cowboys Sunday. It happens! Just like our boy running full speed into the end-zone wall last night.
Conte has, and always will be, nothing more than a serviceable safety. That he’s started for us, with no other safeties beating him out should tell you everything you need to know. He’s the best safety at his position on this team.
That play was unfortunate, and he will be the poster-child for “get offa me” for a long time.
    Damn, that was NASTY!!!!!

  5. Cgmaster Says:

Why in the world would conte try to tackle a dude who outweighs him by 60 pounds up high? Just dive at his legs and get him out of bounds! Conte is absolutely awful and I cant be convinced other wise.

  6. Deminion Says:

I tried giving Conte the benefit of the doubt lol but from what ive seen he is late a lot to his credit a lot of blown coverages aren’t on him ijs. But this is the last straw and most embarrassing

  7. Eric Says:

Garo Yepremian looked better during that blocked kick in the super bowl.

  8. Robert Says:

yeah, but did he assault anyone?

  9. Birdman Says:

Meanwhile us Derwin fans are silently weeping at what could have been…. What should have been….

  10. ChanEpic Says:

@CGmaster – The world will never know.

  11. Joe Says:

Meanwhile us Florida State fans are silently weeping at what could have been…. What should have been…

    .

    Fixed it for ya.

  12. Joe Says:

Garo Yepremian looked better during that blocked kick in the super bowl.

    LOL!

  13. Boo Says:

Joe, this happened before. Fred Jackson v Conte:

  14. Tc Says:

Robert he couldn’t assault anyone, he would get bitch slapped

  15. Pistol Pete Says:

Honestly, he saved the game in KC a few years ago.
Outside of that, I always feel like he is taking bad angles.
Fair of not, that’s my perception.
Last night, for God’s sake, dude should have retired at the half.
By the way, Grimes looked just as bad last night, I felt like AB was being covered by Carlton David most of the night.
    Pistol

  16. Seminole Bill Says:

Joe – your ire should be reserved for the Bucs non-fans who didn’t show up for last night’s game. I was there and it was an embarrassment. There seemed to be at least as many Steelers fans as Bucs fans, if not more, and they were much more enthusiastic. Perhaps if some of the people writing in to this site would show up for a game the team might be more apt to win. How would you feel running on to your home field to find the stands packed with black and yellow jerseys? For the Steelers, it was a home game. I’ve been a season ticket holder for over 10 years and have never seen it this bad.

  17. Sarasota Garey Says:

Nothing like getting slammed on the ground like a toddler to set the tone for the defense.

  18. Robert Says:

    LOL Tc

    NICE!

  19. Casual Observer Says:

Cgmaster is on the mark. I wondered the same. Stupid to tackle high.

  20. adam from ny Says:

    joe he took a double…

    first he got mushed…

then he received the “gtfoh you punk” stiff arm

  21. Sarasota Garey Says:

You are only as good as your weaker player.

  22. You Go Joe Says:

“Mike Smith’s play call in that situation didn’t do him any favors either.”

The only player in Conte zone was the TE. TE ran across and was going to the sideline. Conte with the slowest reaction in the world bites in. The second safety adjacent to Conte so the right side was covered. The only area conte was supposed to cover was infront of him. At is at that moment he sucks so much that he was late to his assignment and then not only did he try to tackle a TE by going high (really high) he got stiffed armed.

Conte sucked. I’ve seen Ronde brought just as large TEs. Conte just doesn’t know how to play nor how to tackle.

  23. adam from ny Says:

this was the signature move of the “we are tougher than you” moves that began to get performed on the bucs last night in the first half…this was the start, and then the pitt defense went into high gear…essentially playing almost dirty as per the new rules…i said it last night in threads and now all the pundits are following suit…

  24. Joe Says:

    Bill:

Joe is not one of those arrogant journalists (most work in college football and love to take pictures of $100+ seats empty at a garbage matchup in the broiling sun while they are paid to sit in an air-conditioned box) who tells people how they should spend their money. Joe knows some of the most hardcore Bucs fans who rarely go to games.

Joe is in no position to demand how someone spends their money, or for that matter what team to root for. Just think that is very haughty. Shoot, Joe will very likely go to a Cardinals-Cubs game at Wrigley Field this weekend. Those games always are 50/50 Cardinals-Cubs fans whether played at Wrigley Field or Busch Stadium. Many believe that is part of the charm. But around here, guess that would be ridiculed. Odd.

Sorry this issue troubles you that much. Again, Joe does not have the self-inflated ego to the point he tells people how they should spend their hard-earned cash. If people think going to the Den of Depression is a good buy, they will go. No more complex than that.

  25. adam from ny Says:

it would be interesting to see the bucs fire mike smith after the chicago game and give buckner the d coordinator role with a little extra time to prepare during the bye week…just a thought…if smith is getting canned, it has to happen the monday after chicago…or essentially wait until after the season

  26. Sarasota Garey Says:

Dirk will probaby blame him getting slammed on someone else, hes loyal to a fault, sometimes you have to put the team first.

  27. Cmonletsgo Says:

Safety first. League will make violent stiff arns to the helmet like this double hit a penalty with next years rule changes.

  28. Daniel Says:

Conte sucks and has sucked for years.

  29. adam from ny Says:

smith honestly might not be even trying to do his job…he might just be sitting in and holding the position for a paycheck until he is canned…i saw buckner sitting on the bench leaning back like “the hell with this sheet”…i think buck sees what adam sees

  30. snakeplaskon Says:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0lCF-vUVwGQ this one is worse….anyone who says he even deserves to be on the practice squad is an idiot…..Licht is an idiot if he can’t get some one better

  31. K_Bassuka Says:

Comte is horrible and should get cut today.

  32. adam from ny Says:

also it looked like conte rushed up on mcdonald like he wanted to apply a kiss to his face…why was he all up by his grill…it was to smooch like a bitch…that is not how you tackle…it’s how you kiss…he was dismissed appropriately by mcdonald…as you do not fugg with a mans face…ever

if there are words to describe the play:

“bitch get the f out of here, go slip someone else the tongue”

  33. Joe Says:

Licht is an idiot if he can’t get some one better

Going to lay cash that if Dirk Koetter didn’t want Conte he’d be gone and had never been re-signed.

  34. __TGH__ Says:

There always seems to be one player each year the Buc’s brass shows more loyalty to than they should because he’s a ‘good guy’ and ‘knows the system’. Last year it was Doug Martin. This year it is Chris Conte. Next year it will be Quizz Rogers.

Hind sight is 20/20 – but its really looking like passing on Derwin James was a huge mistake seeing there has been 0 production from VV to this point. It also looks like passing on Guise for RoJo was also a miss. At least Guise has reason for not suiting up.

  35. Miguel Grande Says:

Unfortunately, I saw that play 25 times since and we may see it for the next decade.

Conte may go into the witness protection plan, change his name, address and phone number.

    Almost as bad as

  36. Miguel Grande Says:

Almost as bad as bad as Billy Buckner or Bartman.

  37. Rod Munch Says:

Bill: I was a season ticket holder back in the 90s and guess what, there was a lot more visiting fans in the stadium than there was Bucs fans for most games – that was until about the middle of 1997 when the Bucs finally started winning.

Anywho when cheap seats cost over $100 each (I paid $105 for season tickets in 1997) and you’re in an area with a really low GDP, what do you expect? Also if those visiting fans are from out of state, well that’s a great thing since that’s the only way you justify spending money on a stadium, that is to draw people in from out of town to visit. This is a tourist based economy, not an industrial economy or a fortune 500 economy or a banking economy, it’s about tourism and people moving here, so anything that brings in more people is a good thing if you care about more than football.

With that said if the Bucs win, people will show up, just like the started showing up and it was nearly impossible to get tickets for years when they were winning. That’s a fair sports market. This isn’t GB where the only thing to do is to go to a Packers game or to have a cow tipping contest. Of course people show up for games there, there is literally nothing else to do that doesn’t involve cheese. This also isn’t Atlanta, which is a terrible sports market, where even if they go to the SB and build a new stadium they can’t get people to show-up if they have one losing week.

Win, and they will come. Lose by having your players humiliated on national TV and having a coach that punts from the opponent 36 in a shootout, and people stay away.

  38. Miguel Grande Says:

Reluctantly, I have to agree about Derwin James and Guice.

  39. El_Buc941 Says:

If that was Justin Evans he would’ve swept the feet from under that TE in a split second. I say the Bucs start cutting ties with useless guys like Conte. Rack up the cap space and go get Bell!

  40. Buc believer Says:

Conte got treated like the little witch (take out the w and add a B) he is! How the hell did he ever Mary a cheerleader?

  41. Hodad Says:

If Conte, Grimes, or Quizz were cut tomorrow no other NFL team would claim them especially what we’re paying Grimes, and Conte two rag dolls. I will say one thing, the blown coverage is not on the players, it’s on the coaches. For three weeks in a row teams have been running that shallow cross across the middle whether it be a tight end, or receiver with a 100% success rate. Need a first down, or big play shallow cross. We can’t cover it, we can’t tackle it.

  42. Trotter Says:

Wow. Just saw that Conte vs Fred Jackson video. When will he learn?
    Fool me once…

  43. ColonelAngus Says:

New JBF drinking game, every time Derwin James appears in a post, take a shot of whiskey.

  44. Conte Piscatelli Says:

I don’t recall l seeing Conte on the field after that play, I heard he had a one injury but I don’t really believe it. The only thing hurt was Conte pride.

  45. Destinjohnny Says:

Can u imagine the ferocity 47 would have used in taking this guy on??
He would have ripped off his arm and shoved it up his …

  46. Defense Rules Says:

@Joe … “Joe has always gotten along with Conte. Fans loathe him.” Wow Joe, with friends like you Conte surely doesn’t need any enemies. Kind of a broad brush there, isn’t it? “Fans LOATHE him.” (Are you only talking about Bucs Non Believer there, or including ALL others?).

For the record, not that any JBFers really care, Vance McDonald goes 6’4″ and 267 lbs to Chris Conte’s 6’2″ and 203 lbs. So McDonald, who is an excellent TE BTW, had a couple inches on Conte and outweighed him by 64 lbs. Minor detail of course. But if anyone really bothered watching the tape, they would’ve seen McDonald stiff-arm Chris in the helmet, causing him to turn his body & throwing him off-balance. Awesome stiff-arm, especially against a guy you outweigh by 65 lbs. And did anyone note by any chance who showed up on the injury report BEFORE the game for a knee injury? Hmmm, wonder why Conte’s name was listed on there.

BTW, still don’t understand the coverage on that play. Why was our safety alone on the flat with a huge TE like that?

  47. Sunday_44 Says:

Ok let’s get over the Derwin James pick.

I’m ok with going VV and I think he will be very good.

There is still ZERO excuses for putting Conte on the field ever again.

This many people don’t all agree about 1 player being that bad out of nowhere.

And Grimes isn’t worth 1 million a year, much less 10.

What a terrible game. I’m sure Miko was embarrassed too as she LOVES to gloat about her man’s stats. Let’s hear them Miko?

Quizz looks like he is 53 out there at times. What a wasted play when he runs the ball. Maybe Vita Vea can run the ball next week.

Just when you think this coaching staff is turning a corner, they can’t figure out how to combat a simple blitz.

And where is the TE misdirection play when you need it.
3 games in and we haven’t even attempted our best play.

    Genius.

I’ll bet my weekly check Koetter had his hands all over that game calling plays.

That being said 2-1 is a mark the media gave us a 7% chance to do, so please don’t continue to HOPE good enough IS enough and bring back Winston.

If he played last night we win. Big, tall stands in the pocket and moves the pocket, where Fitz barely gets it off and then it is tipped.

  48. Buc believer Says:

@fooled by this defense errr I mean defense rules. You are such a funny person. I say person because I can’t tell if your male or female by your posts. What a dumb ass.

  49. adam from ny Says:

quizz is on the team for really for blocking…and he is so short so when he crouches to block he gets even lower causing the rushing player issues…he’s by their knees basically and is exceptional as the extra protector of fitz…barber is actually very good too, but not really a threat to defenders self inflicting injuries to their very own knees like quizz accidentally does

  50. BigMacAttack Says:

That’s your boy Joe. Why? I have no idea. Conte has sucked since he got here. At least the hold on the Djax punt return wasn’t so obvious for the whole world to see. This wasn’t Conte’s only bad play last night either. I have no problem with Jameis but Conte couldn’t play safety for SECLSU. Many of us keep bashing Conte and he keeps proving us right. He must have nude pics of someone at 1BP.

  51. PAPA Q Says:

    Conte placed on IR

  52. adam from ny Says:

when issiah johnson hit the wall full steam he literally had no idea how deep out of the end zone he was…it actually doesn’t say much for his “feel for things”…you sorta gotta know where you are…i’ve never seen a player not know he was that far out of bounds

  53. Joe Says:

when issiah johnson hit the wall full steam he literally had no idea how deep out of the end zone he was…it actually doesn’t say much for his “feel for things”…you sorta gotta know where you are…i’ve never seen a player not know he was that far out of bounds

    Agreed!

  54. Steven007 Says:

Well Conte is on IR now so… Karma?

  55. Kalind Says:

We can only hope Joe. We can only hope. But Mike Smith still has a job in the NFL so nothing makes sense. Down is up left is right blue is red! It’s bedlam

  56. Buc1987 Says:

This guy have any kids in school?

If I was one of them, I would have skipped school today after that.

  57. Mike Johnson Says:

I can’t imagine how Conte is feeling right now. So I’m gonna lay off of him. Sometimes you are the fish and sometimes you are the Fisherman. Conte was clealy fished on Monday night. He’s not a quitter. And will come back strong. Watch and see.

  58. WillieG Says:

Joe, you’re a asshole for calling those of us who do not want a sex offender representing our team and city, knuckle draggers.

I’m sure you’ll delete this comment, because I know from past experience that you can dish it out, but you can’t take it. Any criticism is instantly deleted.

  59. Renegade Says:

Conte looked like jazz off of Fresh prince getting thrown out…lol scrub!

  60. Easy Says:

I said it before he even said it on the broadcast. Also typed it in my sports bar chat on Sherdog before Witten said it.

  61. Easy Says:

Go look at the timeline!! Lol

  62. EA Says:

Too bad he wont play next week, some of his better games have been against his former club.

  63. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

In Pinellas County, it would have been legal for Conte to come back up firing a gun. Stand your Ground.

  64. INSPIRED Says:

That’s funny Demon 👍. So is Knuckle Draggers 😁

  65. Buc407 Says:

Get him off this team….now you can’t tell me there isn’t a better safety to sign or put on the field He’s so good he’s been our safety on the worst pass defense the last 4 damn years
