Was Offense Bored?

August 10th, 2018

Peyton Barber reacts

A couple of times the past week or so, Dirk Koetter kind of sighed that the Bucs defense was getting the better of the offense in practice.

Last Friday, Koetter confessed if he had to grade who won practice, defense ruled the day 90/10 — with 50/50 being an even match.

Well, the Bucs offense came out last night in its first action under the lights of preseason football and looked anything but rusty. A better word would be “sharp.”

Joe spoke with running back Peyton Barber after the game and he offered two reasons the offense came on fire Thursday night.

First, the Bucs defense is that much better this year. You know, iron sharpens iron?

The second reason was mental fatigue.

“When you practice against the same guys for however many weeks we’ve been practicing,” players tend to lose a razor focus,” Barber said.

This is why, if you catch Koetter at times, he talks about breaking up practices, occasionally having the team practice indoors as a way to disrupt the monotony of training camp.

It will be interesting to see what the offense does next week facing the Titans, a playoff team from the previous season.

“For 3 years Kobe Faker has stated we need a new playcaller and a short passing attack scheme. Force the defense to counter the proficient short passing and than take shots downfield

We have OJ and Godwin with short pass route skillsets to really open our offence. with the short quick passing, there is limited time for the QBs to hold on to the ball and turnovers…

The starting defense was not as advertised and don’t tell me it was because it’s preseason and their not showing anything. Preseason is about man on man and if your defensive line doesn’t show up man on man then you got problems and I saw alot of them last night. Looks like the same old Bucs defense doing nothing. The offense however was humming and showing it can play man on man.

The Bucs D did play a lot more vanilla than the Bucs O. Don’t know if that had anything to do with the difference but you can’t discount it completely.

You are looking at a defensive unit with a lot of rookies trying to take starting roles. It was their first game as a unit, and players who will end up starters by the regular season were playing with the second and third team…unless you don’t believe Carlton Davis will take Ryan Smith’s job.

As far as the defensive line, it started slow…again, first time together. As they played they got better.

And I don’t know how long you have been a Bucs fan, but if you were a fan when Dungy was here, what was his slogan for the defense?

    Bend. Don’t Break.

That’s what we saw last night. They held the Dolphins to 3 points in the first quarter. Held them to ten by the half.

    Bend. Don’t break.

And the offense kept racking up points.

It was not until the third thru fifth team defense came in that the defense started blowing it.

Not bad for a first game. A meaningless game.

Bucs D isn’t going to show anything new in preseason there going to run the same stuff As last year so there’s know tape of the new stuff on tape smart by Smitty

    mojo

smitty brought a nickel blitz….that’s far from being vanilla….

    bonzai

dolphins shoot themselves in the foot…twice….they were marching down the field until they got a penalty in which they missed the FG….

that type of defense will “break” eventually…..defense was not as advertised as most suggest…..

Kobe Faker is going to need some more “coulda shoulda woulda” Bucs missed draft picks… his mighty prediction on passing on Guice being a mistake is now BZZZ WRONG. Out of the season with torn ACL. Everyone knew he had bad knees going into the draft.

KF only has Derwin James to hang his hat on now or he’ll really look like a FAKER and fool

All I know 37 of 47 for 336 yards td no picks, AND all three qbs engineered 3 td drives doesn’t sound boring to me! Of course we know even if Jameis the Fameis Winston had a game like this the pin heads and nitpickers would still have something bad to say! That young man Watson better not fumble again or won’t make this team. Really would break a few of these dudes hearts up here!

It is decidedly NOT smart to have your D not play to their fullest in the preseason when they have so many new parts. The Bucs D was atrocious last season. They don’t have time to get cute. They need to play and play hard and gel. Period.
