Punt returner?

This is making Joe drool.

Friday night Bucs speedy wideout DeSean Jackson returned a punt, but it was called back on a penalty.

It got a lot of Bucs fans charged up. Is this going to be a thing in the regular season? Yesterday, Bucs coach Dirk Koetter was asked about it and he seemed a little coy whether this was a freak incident or something to expect from Jackson.

“Well, we’re deep so we can use [Jackson] right now,” Koetter said. “We definitely have the ability to right now because we have a lot of guys. DeSean wants to do it. It starts with that – DeSean has to want to do it. DeSean’s an elite punt returner, but he’s got to want to do it in this stage in his career. Right now he does want to do it and we wanted to get him at least one in preseason, which he did a good job of that one the other night. Unfortunately, there was a penalty on that play.

“If DeSean’s not back there, [Adam Humphries] or one of those other guys will be back. When you only have 46 guys on game day, your depth at every position is out the window. It’s who’s your best guy at the game and that might even be a rotation.”

Jackson used to be an absolute terror as a punt returner, virtually a human highlight reel.

Look, the Bucs need to win games and to do that the Bucs need to score points. If Jackson can get the Bucs an extra six points here or there, or give the Bucs much better field position to start a possession, then by all means do what it takes. Jackson told Joe two weeks ago he 100 percent wants to return punts.

If he now has to be hypnotized or Mike Evans has to bribe him with a new fishing boat or whatever, do it.

All hands on deck. Love it. He and Shaun Wilson would be a great return duo. Throw Humphries out there when they are punting inside our 20.

He’s an elite weapon in short space…..not sure why this wasn’t done last year. I would love to see him run those screens we throw to Hump….Hump gets the 1st down….Jackson will get you that plus take it to the house.

Bout frigging time. When is the last time the Bucs had an actual threat returning kicks and punts?

I am all in on this one. Make him earn that cake.

  5. Ed Says:

He has already been approved and elite all pro punt return or why wouldn’t the box use their number three receiver in this capacity no brainer duh

    Good!!!!!!!!

Evidently he didn’t want to do it last year which explains alot about his overall effort, his want and production for 2017. I like hearing all these positives about Djax, he really wants to be here and produce and I believe the Bucs are about to reap the rewards 2018.

I was totally wrong about this guy. He’s had every opportunity to become withdrawn or just sit back and collect a check and no one would have blamed him.

Offering to return punts at this stage of his career with what he has already accomplished… that’s true leadership.

Thank you DeSean, good luck this year brother!

Coach whatever you do get Hump on the field for ST. He does all the dirty work for us and he needs to be out there mixing it up. The hitting gets him into the flow of the game, otherwise he’s not ready to take hits going over the middle.

Remember last season when you took him off returns and he started dropping 3rd down passes? And remember when you put him back on returns and he returned to form? Make sure you do and make sure you get Hump out there……..His block last game was beautiful BTW.

Also….kudos on growing some nuts and taking the coinflip and not deferring. It’s been working nicely! Please don’t jip me against the Saints and defer.

    Sincerely Your,

Djax is a scrub…….gave us barely over 500 yards. Three lousy TDs as a Bucs and barely any explosive plays.

He still owes us 350 yards and at least 3 TDs from last year.

    STIFF

Good idea unless he gets one of those blow up hits that occurs on kick off and punt returns. Then it’s not a good idea. I think this year Jackson is going to be a beast and lead the Bucs in YAC And total receiving yards!! May be wrong but I may not!! LETS GOOOO!!

  12. Dirty Bucs Says:

Maybe the YAC is correct, but no chance he’s the leading receiver in total yards.

I like him returning punts. The Bucs are going to be better than people think this year. All the hype last year, and we fell flat. I’m more excited about this team than any team I’ve seen in about 10 years in Tampa. Looking forward to being right here. haha
