He’s Bbbaaaccckkk!

August 26th, 2018

Another return.

The return of the misplaced Calgary Stampeder is here.

Joe normally doesn’t write about camp meat because there simply isn’t enough interest. As Joe has often said since he launched this here website a decade ago, Joe is about topics, not transactions. But here we go.

The Bucs signed a guy today who indirectly led Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht to sign DeSean Jackson and draft Chris Godwin. That man’s name is wide receiver Donteea Dye.

Dye was cut from the Bucs last season coming out of training camp in a memorable final episode of “Hard Knocks.” The Bucs wanted to keep Bobo Wilson but he was in Miami. In the episode, the Bucs seriously considered telling Wilson to take a long walk on a short pier in Tampa Bay and then bring back Dye.

Of course, that didn’t happen and it appeared Dye’s days with the Bucs were done.

But no!

Dye attempted to play in the CFL this summer (did he doom himself not going to Calgary?) with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. He didn’t make the team’s 46-man roster coming out of training camp and was released.

In 2016, it almost became a running joke how often Dye was cut, re-signed, placed on the practice squad, cut again, signed again, placed on the practice squad once more, etc. It was almost a weekly occurrence.

Joe just cannot imagine Dye making the Bucs as deep as they are at wide receiver. Joe’s guess is after Sergio Bailey blew out his ankle Friday night just before the game with the Lions, the Bucs needed a body. Given how Dye already knew Koetter’s offense, it was an easy decision.

Joe will also guess Dye still has friends with the Bucs (or his agent has friends inside One Buc Palace) and someone from the Bucs called Dye and said, “Hey man, you want to make a few thousand dollars in a week just to drop some passes catch some balls from Austin Allen?

    puzzling….

  2. Radsy Says:

We need to stop toying with this man and let him live his life, hahaha

  3. Kevinator24 Says:

    Haha “drop some passes”.

  4. SchwiftyBuc Says:

Lol why? Justin Evans has clearly won the battle for the 5th Wide reciever spot and it’s not even close. Maybe Martino has a chance of making the roster if we keep 6. Bobo Wilson has not made very many plays at all. I know Jameis likes him but that doesn’t warrant a roster spot.

  5. SchwiftyBuc Says:

    Justin Watson not Evans. Lol.

  6. Wausa Says:

I’m sure he will be cut next week, but he couldn’t make a CFL roster so the Bucs sign him to the deepest position on the team. That seems odd.

However, the signing of Garrison Sanborn is a little different. I’m not sure why the Bucs released him before. I expect him to be on the opening day roster.

  7. Cobraboy Says:

Wausa, Sandborn was signed because the current LS has performed erratically. He caused the missed PAT vs. the Lions with a bad snap that was hard to handle.

Need a WR body…..I guess we want to play them Thurs without worrying about injuries…..

    Camp Mannequins….

  9. Easy Says:

Dye must’ve took a week of vacation to play football.

    😂

  11. Rod Munch Says:

Completely different subject, but I didn’t know face guarding is no longer illegal. That means the play in the endzone that VH3 made was a good play – at the time it looked like something that probably should have been flagged. Anywho I wonder what other changes were made I didn’t know about?

  12. El_Buc941 Says:

This could be the season dye makes the team.the way everyone around one buc palace has sticky fingers he should catch on pretty quick.unless they brought him in for say kick returner.

  13. Cobraboy Says:

Was not Dye solid on special teams? Could be the coaches are not impressed with the current crop of WR’s covering and blocking on ST’s.

  14. Dan McLaughlin Says:

He’s there to play Thurs. That’s all

  15. Dave Says:

Yet another camp is almost over and I went undrafted and didn’t get a call to join a practice squad.
Maybe next year, although hitting 50 slowed me down slightly.

  16. Kobe Faker Says:

“Lol! What a joke this has come to! The scrub couldnt make a CFL roster but we pick him up?”

The Cleveland Browns laughs at us”

Was not Dye solid on special teams?

    Eeeeehhhhh…

Certainly not enough to keep a job with the Bucs the past year.

  18. Mike Johnson Says:

2 0r 3 grand to play on Thurs. Not a bad payday. He’s got nice vacation money for a couple weeks stay here in Fl.

  19. Buchead5588 Says:

I like Watson an Bobo I like bobo connection with Jameis An his speed injuries happen I think he should at the least be on PS

  20. rrsrq Says:

You know Hump, ME, D-Jax and Godwin not gonna play, Justin Watson, likely only the first half. They also cut Lamphey (I could be spelling his name wrong)

  21. JonBuc Says:

Chris Berman might refer to him as “Live and Let”
Dye. The Bucs lost 2 receivers for the year on Friday ( Bailey and someone I’ve never heard of )…

  22. stpetebucsfan Says:

They’re getting Dye ready to work with JW during his three weeks away from OBP. Dye is not going to make this team but he could pick up some more loose change helping JW stay in shape during his downtime.

“Somebody” could pay Dye for those three weeks and he’s on the cusp of being an NFL level WR which would be a luxury for JW to toss with during the three week banishment.

  23. Owlykat Says:

I like that suggestion, Stpetebucsfan, but I believe that a former NFL Star WR works out with Jameis and likely will do so while Jameis is suspended to keep him sharp.

  24. Brandon Says:

He knows the offense, he can play a little. This is win-win. He gets to try to show the NFL and any other pro league that he can play and the Bucs get a guy to fill a roster spot for the game on Thursday. Pretty simple stuff really.
