Receivers Making Davis A Man

June 2nd, 2018

Praises Bucs WRs.

You have to have a pair to play corner in the NFL. And it seems Carlton Davis, if he didn’t already have a pair, is growing a set.

After underwear football practice Thursday, Davis was asked how he is holding up against one of the deepest, most talented wide receiving units in the NFL.

In so many words, the Auburn product said it is challenging.

“In the SEC, there’s a lot of great players, but nothing compares to the NFL,” Davis said. “We have some great receivers, not even on the first team, but also on the second team. I really enjoy competing against those guys every day and I look forward to competing against those guys to get better with every rep I take.”

As the old saying goes, iron sharpens iron.

Joe remembers talking to Vernon Hargreaves at this time last year and asked him about DeSean Jackson. Hargreaves said pretty much what Davis said, that the SEC has fantastic receivers but he never saw any wheels like Jackson possesses.

That’s what baffles Joe so much about the Bucs’ young corners (not the current crop of rookies). These guys were going up the best of the best every day in practice, yet those same corners got worse!

How?

It will soon get better …with guys that don’t need instructions from worthless coaches!

  2. Netwalker Says:

How? A week D line that left them exposed so long so often that they lost confidence.

  3. Spartin Says:

How, you ask? Is it possible that the corners are not cut from iron but plastic instead or maybe a wet paper bag?

  4. Casual Observer Says:

It does seem to me that the weakest part of this team now is the DB coaching. Last year it seemed, time after time, the opp QB said, “OK – you’re giving me 6 yards every time – I’ll take it.” And the TB response seemed to be, “Six yards, OK – but you didn’t get a TD.” And they didn’t change this strategy (when it obviously wasn’t working) during a game, or during the season. I submit that these DB coaches just aren’t too smart. Wouldn’t somebody above them in the hierarchy please take notice?

Stop with this short sighted “it’s the coaching sheet” !!!!….it has been the talent on the roster…gessshhhh…

Ultimately this is going to be just one advantage…an edge. Going up everyday against our receivers is going to be great training for the rookies and other young players.

Other than VHG I’m not sure I understand this meme about Buc coaches not being able to coach up CB’s. Who else could have been coached up? Counting on coaches to make 4th rounders and UDFA’s into solid players is a bit foolish.

If the failure rate of draft picks is 50% and higher for the later picks why should we be surprised that several young players have yet to blossom.

BTW…Aren’t those young guys still on the team?

  7. BucEmUp Says:

I watched that clip, and the press with the secondary and corners coaches. My excitement from hoping to see some man coverage has fizzled out quickly as expected. You can tell Davis is just saying the right things, that guy doesn’t want to.play off, he wants to play physical. If they continue to force these guys into playing every snap off with a basic zone defense I hope Smith is fired before everyone else gets wiped out with him

  8. Owlykat Says:

I think long term we have the CBs we need even when Brent Grimes retires or moves on. Davis is a keeper and the answer to keeping up to and challenging the tall receivers in our Division. Recently Smith had to cover VJax in practice and with his great speed Smith was able to cover him. He looked poor last year but all that experience has helped him mature. I believe even much maligned Vernon Hargreaves III will be much improved this year since Koetter has announced our young CBs will be able to do press coverages this year and that is the type of CB Hargreaves is. He should get his confidence back and show why all the experts evaluated he was the top CB in the draft in 2016. Stewart has also shown he is a good playmaker too. We have plenty of CB depth now to cover injuries and play dime coverages.

  9. BucfanBF Says:

I also am not impressed with our DB coaches or Smith in General. I agree with BucEmUp above. If they play off coverage consistently again this year I want all of our D coaches fired except for Buckner.

  10. Pat Says:

Dirk did say in yesterday’s interview that the OTA rules do not permit a lot of press coverage.

  11. Capt. Tim Says:

You can keep preaching it, but its not true.
    Hagreaves sucked, true.
But Ryan Smith- a rookie forced to start, took Hargreaves job and kept it.

It was difficult to see, because we had no Des or Pass rush- but Smiths technique was difinately better by years end. He got force fed a lot of experience. Should help this year. He made some dumb rookie mistakes- they all do.

But I think he will make a big leap this year, with a year starting under his belt

Hargreaves sucked last year- but you cant say he regressed, because he sucked the year before, too!

We’ ll see how Carlton Davis progresses on the outside. I am so glad we drafted Davis! He is a perfect fit for this team. Cant wait to see him play!
Think he will start by years end.

Think Stewart will get lots ofvtime in the slot. And Smith will keep preparing to replace Grimes- IF he decides to retire someday

  12. First Down Tampa Bay Says:

    Capt. Tim,

I agree, Ryan Smith was thrown to the wolves before he was even close to being game ready. But I definitely saw improvement as the year went on, even to the point of playing like an average corner.

  13. Lamarcus Says:

Maybe our receivers aren’t as good as we think.

  14. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ Owl

What happened to you occasionally happens to me…..I’ll submit a post and it simply isn’t accepted….then is shows up a few minutes (5 or so) later.
One day I reposted several times and was scolded…..but I thought the originals didn’t go through…..they ultimately did.

As for the narrative of the Buc coaches not developing young CBs…..Joe’s constant pounding of this theory is starting to win over some fans….but don’t be influenced by it….use your common sense…..
We have Hargreaves…..may simply be a bust….or may develop….perhaps not cut out for the outside in the NFL
We have Smith….started at S…..4th round pick…..by all measures is improving after being thrown into the fire.
We have Javien Elliott….and UDFA….they have perhaps done miracles with him.

And, how about Evans….not bad development from him….could it simply be the talent we have on the field?

Now, I will agree that the scheme may not have fit the players….we drafted presss corners…now let them press.

We also had the worst Dline in the history of the Bucs last year…..proof of that are the wholesale changes….that had to affect the Dbacks substantially…..

So….let’s see instead of declaring DB coaches incompetent…

He’s beating it to death sweetie – look the other way….

Ryan Smith wasn’t starting as a rookie. He was a rookie the year before as a safety and they moved him to corner his second season

But mommy, that horse was already dead, and the corpse had started to rot…

Ummmm. Well honey, the man with the stick obviously has some issues to work out.

You prefer Joe to lie and rail how Mike Smith’s staff is misjudged and Smith and Maxie and Hoke got robbed of not being head coaching candidates?

Of course, Buccaneers.com likely had multiple stories on why Ryan Smith, Javuan Elliott and Vernon Hargreaves have been molded into Pro Bowl candidates.

  20. Joe Says:

Ryan Smith wasn’t starting as a rookie. He was a rookie the year before as a safety and they moved him to corner his second season

And who came up with bright idea?

    Hint: It wasn’t George Warhop.

  21. Tampabaybucfan Says:

And who came up with bright idea? (Smith at Safety)

Actually, Joe….that is a very good question……I was always under the assumption that he was drafted with Safety in mind……so, I was likely Licht with help from some of the Scouts…

For all we know the Dback coaches were saying “WTF”?

  22. Not there yet Says:

Joe I could easily see how you would be baffled by the fact that you have to have talent to be a good corner in the NFL and the Ryan Smith’s Just aren’t starting caliber corners. Maybe the off ball system doesn’t fit vh3 skill set but he’s more talented the Smith for sure

But seriously thanks for the news flash…..imagine professionals who can devote as many hours to their craft as they want actually being better than college receivers who spend more time in class. Wow who knew that!!!!!!

As a bama fan I am sooo glad we got this kid.

As pointed out in the story, apparently three corners on Bucs roster haven’t. They have regressed.

Agreed. A good big, lengthy CB is what we’ve needed for a long time. And I also am excited to see him further down the road in his second and third years. Reminds me of Justin Evans situation who is going no where but up.

  26. Anonymous Says:

    Capt Tim

Agreed. Exact type of CB we’ve needed for a long time. This rook looks like the real deal. Very excited to see what he’s looking like in the next 2-4 years. Very high ceiling and like Justin Evans, this guy will probably go no where but up farther down the road.

  27. SOEbuc Says:

    Capt Tim

AGreed. Guy looks like he could be the real deal for us. Also excited to see him farther down the road in the next 3-4 years. If this guy can play well his rookie season, gonna pull a Justin Evans who is going no where but up.

Horses know what’s going on when they see their brethren being beaten. Rode my horse over to my neighbor buddy’s house one spring when they were breaking horses that had pretty much been left feral over the winter into riding shape. Lots of cussing, whipping, beating. When I got on him (a gelding named Danny) to ride home, he took off like a shot and ran like a thoroughbred for several miles until we got to the gate that led from my buddy’s farm to ours. Normally I had to be beg and cajole Danny just to get him to a trot. Seeing the other horses beaten scared him straight

  30. Capt.Tim Says:

Getaclue- Smith never saw the field in his rookie season
    0 plays= still a rookie

Damn Joe!!! How many Cbs have been “molded in to all pros” in their rookie season??

IT TAKES ROOKIE CB A COUPLE YEARS TO FIGURE IT OUT!!

And the move to safety, back to CB- would only be a promotion!
Ryan Smith is a big Guy for CB. They drafted him- thinking he would need to move to safety.
After working with him, they began to realize that Smith had the skill to play CB in the big leagues. So the moved him back.

For a rookie 4th rounder, drafted as a safety- take the job away from your 1st round pick with a years more experience,
Is one hell of a success story.

Ryan Smith may very well be one of our starting CBs, for years to come.
Paired with Carleton Davis, thats a big strong set oF Cbs

Trying giving a damn rookie at least ONE YEAR to develop, huh?

  31. BucEmUp Says:

Pat that’s just annaxcuse by Koetter. Smith s staff, the secondary coach actually was ignorant enough to say that playing press man was the equivenalnt to playing tag football and it was far easier than playing off coverage.

Even if there were rules that make it harder to jam the wrs at the line there is no excuse to have these guys playing far enough back to where they have to scream at the top of their lungs just to jaw the competition

10 to 12 yards back is playing scared and unacceptable. Mike Smith and his staff suck…plain and simple.

Who wants to bet AGAINST Drew Breed winning the game with 30% more time of possession because our defense cannot get off the field. Who wants to bet AGAINST the Bucs getting tore up with slant routes more than any other team . IT’S GOING TO HAPPEN!!!! SMITH WILL HAVE A JOKE OF A SECODNARY AGAIN!!!!! DUDE CAN’T COACH!!!!!

  32. mark2001 Says:

Joe…in defense of our situation, we aren’t the only team that seems to be unable to find and develop good corners. It has been the Packers Achilles heel for year. They keep drafting them in early rounds, and they keep failing. Don’t ask me why, because I’m not that knowledgeable. Maybe you could ask Ronde…or Grimes. I’m curious why so many fail to transition well from the college to the pro game. It seems almost as uncertain as the QB position.

  33. Capt.Tim Says:

Jason Pierre Paul and Vinnie curry will be our best Defensive secondary coaches.
“ cover your man for 3 seconds, and we’ll get to the QB!”
I know Grimes can do that. I know Ryan Smith can do that.
I believe Carleton Davis will learn to do it. I hope MJ Stewart will learn to do it.

  34. Anonymous Says:

Yes Dline was miserable last year which definitely can effect the secondary..

But isn’t the inverse true as well? Corners play 8-10 yds off the receiver and a slant is completed before the dline can get out of his stance

    It takes a village…..
