“At What Point Does He Accept What Dirk Koetter And Todd Monken Say?”

June 28th, 2018

“I was trying — that’s what messed me up — I was trying to throw the ball to Mike Evans the whole game and that kind of threw me off my game. I wanted him to get that record. Luckily, he got it by one yard so, shoot, I accomplished what I wanted to do. I didn’t go out there. I didn’t want to throw three interceptions but I also didn’t think we were going to have a 95-yard drive, either. So like I said. God is good. That’s all that matters. We got the win, right?”– Jameis Winston, Dec. 31, 2017.

The quote above really slapped Joe in the face when Jameis uttered it following the season-ending victory against the Saints.

Did he really just say was forcing the ball to one guy just to rack up stats when Jameis, personally, was riding a nine-game losing streak as a starting quarterback?

Jiminy Christmas! That’s absolutely not what playcaller/head coach Dirk Koetter wanted Jameis to do and, per Jameis own words, it cost him interceptions.

As Bucs fans now sit wondering about the future of Jameis, fantastic Sirius XM NFL Radio host Alex Marvez, a man who attends Bucs games and has a relationship with Dirk Koetter, has chimed in on Jameis’ future. The full audio from Orlando sports radio is below and Joe highly recommends it. Marvez’s reasoned take on the Jameis investigation decision is the most succinct Joe has heard to date.

As for the football end of things, Marvez sees a nothing-special QB who may be clashing with coaches.

“Reality is that he’s been a pretty mediocre/average quarterback for his first three seasons there. A guy who has some upside and he can make plays; don’t get me wrong. But he also throws a lot of interceptions, makes a lot of bad decisions,” Marvez said.

“And the question is at what point does he listen to his coaching. At what point does he accept what Dirk Koetter and Todd Monken say and get rid of the football rather than try to make a throw that isn’t there? ‘Don’t take chances. Don’t put your defense in a bad spot.’ They keep stressing this to him every season. Every season he doesn’t seem to listen. Well, maybe he’ll listen now because the Bucs have a decision to make in 2019. If he is healthy and on the roster at the end of the year, do you bring him back in 2019 for $20.5 million next season, or do you move on to another quarterback? And I think the Bucs may be more likely to do the latter than the former.”

Joe agrees with Marvez except for the final note about the Bucs being more likely to move on from Jameis than keep him in 2019.

Simply stated, Team Glazer is rooting for Jameis and will base its decision on what Jameis does on the field in 2018. If he plays well and stays out of trouble, he’s back. If not, well, Team Glazer will have a lot to assess. And if Jameis gets hurt for a second consecutive season, then that creates an entirely different situation.

Yet another example of JW’s mental shortcomings.
He was the same way in college. Remember the thing with Jimbo Fischer on the sideline?

  4. NPR SageBoy Says:

Poor decision making was the primary rap on Winston coming out of FSU. Three years later, not much has changed. Not happy that he’s “average at best” in the eyes of a trainer observer.

  5. Defense Rules Says:

Great source Joe; I like Marvis’ take about Jameis not listening well enough to his coaches. And your opening quote & comment is spot on IMO … I can’t even imagine true franchise QBs like Tom Brady, Peyton Manning or Drew Brees saying anything like that. Dumb dumb dumb.

  6. Belligerentbuc Says:

Uh-oh…preparing the fan base for a separation of franchise and qb. 🙁

  7. Dooshlarue Says:

“Like I said, God is good”
    WTF?

  8. Cs2 Says:

Chris Simms said the glazers are done with Jameis. I believe a former player over someone just guessing the glazers are fine with it

  9. miken Says:

i Would think the only way they move on from him is he is the same or worse this year and shows no progress and or off the feild stuff is bad.

  10. Buccernutter Says:

Meh the season was over and he was looking out for Mike. He can be portrayed as a good teammate as well.

    It’s all about perspective.

I swear, the public outrage from casual fans that know nothing about our squad really starting to influence our “die hard” fan base’s “educated” opinion of Jameis and the bucs.

Jameis, koetter, and the glazers are not what’s wrong with our team.

    It’s the fans.

  11. m0j0 Says:

Winston isn’t going anywhere, period. All this talk, speculation, etc. is just that.

  12. oar Says:

But…but… but the coaching staff….Wah wah

  13. Onetrickpony Says:

” if he stays out of trouble”..
    What?
Do you really think he is going to come and say he messed up again, if he does ?
My grandmother use to say, once a liar, always a liar.
Too much past history, time to,move on

  14. Bucsmarley Says:

Time to cut our losses. He’s not worth the risk of keeping on the roster this year to only end up getting injured and then we are on the hook for his salary. He is not worth 20 million per year no growth. Guess we will see if our organization has any common sense or if they prefer to set the organization back another 10 years. We have a lot of good pieces but need a leader that leads by example. There’s a reason your top tier qbs are leaders by example. I’m not sold on the Nick Foles or Bridgewater idea but wish we could trade for Lamar Jackson and allow or New couching staff in 2019 to build around his talent. It’s a Bucs life

  15. Bucko40 Says:

The Fans don’t play on the field. Sorry Buccernutter.

  16. Alphabucfan Says:

Must be average to break dan Marino’s record smh guys jm3 is still very young an immature he has a lot of growing up to do on the field an off it. We all make mistakes some of us more than others it’s life an what did everyone think was going to happen wen you hand a young an immature man millions of dollars. Let’s also not look at all the positive things he’s doing in the community just look at the few negative things that have happen. Everyone is so quick to judge others that’s not our jobs but seems like we make it our job Winston will have to answer for the crimes he’s done just like the rest of us no one is perfect we all make bone head decisions even ceos an franchise QBS. Once JW3 quits making so many bone head mistakes an learn a little bit more he will be great

  17. Dewey Selmon Says:

I agree with Bucnuuter on the fact that Winston was looking out for #13, remember Glennon making sure Evans and Vincent Jackson both got 1000 yards.

  18. mark2001 Says:

Bo40…good point…the 12th man can add a little juice and encouragement. But it will never be the 11th man, or any of the others on the field.

  19. Tampabaybucfan Says:

At this point….I don’t care if Winston listens to Koetter or Monken…but I do care that he listens to his Mother.

  20. SC Bucs Fan Says:

I love how we have had 6 days of articles, posts and speculation on reports and suspensions not released.

God love the internet. We want justice NOW!

  21. gambelero Says:

In one thread Joe asked. “Will anyone at One Buc Place stick up for Jameis?” In another he (they) suggested that Jameis’ shenanigans will cost him tens of millions in his first post-rookie contract and suggested that the Glazers will be able to extend him for much less. I’m thinking 75%-80% of Matty Ice instead of 125% of Matty Ice.

Why not kill two birds with one stone? Extend Winston at a discount within a few weeks of the suspension. If you’re worried about the optics, why not take my suggestion and give him an extra suspension. Say, suspend him for half the first three preseason games and the entire fourth preseason game.

The longer the Glazers wait, the more it’ll cost them. I think America’s quarterback will get pissed off and focus all his energy on getting better. If he joins the elite quarterbacks of the league post-suspension, which is very likely, it’ll cost the Glazers tens of millions. I’m going to go on record and say that he’ll never be worth less than he is right now.

And Jameis would see an extension offer from One Buc as “having his back” and “believing in him.” He would be much less likely to jump ship and play the HOF portion of his career somewhere else.

Some of you are going to be irritated at me for saying this out loud. I’m convinced, though, that Licht, the scouts and the Glazers read everything on this board and regularly follow our advice. The players and coaches (except for Mike Smith) not so much.

On our next OS upgrade, a sarcasm font too much to ask for Joe?

  22. Walter Seidel Says:

Team Glazer…the longer you hold onto this jerk, the fewer fans you’ll have. Period.

  23. Roy T. Buford Says:

As I’ve said before….JW is a BS artist. He’s that way in everything. He knows the right answers. He says all the right stuff but then does what he wants when it comes down to it. On and off the field. I still remember that random wild toss up throw in pre-season last year.

If he blows off what his HC says, he’s not going to listen to anyone.

  24. Buc believer Says:

I wonder how many of these “fans” calling for the demise of the BEST QB this franchise has ever had actually are season tickets holders (not just saying that they are) or for that matter even watch games. You front running tards can all go kiss some arse and stay away from Ray Jay when we start winning again…. with Winston. That goes double for you Tom Jones!

  25. Pete I Says:

“Reality is that he’s been a pretty mediocre/average quarterback for his first three seasons there.”

Once again someone has again summed it all up.

  26. Frank Pillow Says:

Let’s please put the Saints game into proper context-for all the INTs and forcing the ball, Jameis’ throw to Godwin at the end of the game was $. That being said, it’s equally fair to skewer him for willfully disregarding his HC’s direction on that play–with Dirk wanting him to check the ball down.

In one game, we have both sides of the Jameis coin. The QB who forces throws for all the wrong reasons and the player than absolutely has the ability to execute with the very best of them in clutch situations.

In both cases, he went off script- but if the on-field narrative about Jameis is really predicated on Wins vs Losses, the ultimate outcome has to count for something too, right? They didn’t win that game in spite of him, they won because of him.

I’m not attempting to excuse his underlying behavior- Hard Knocks nailed this too in the now-classic sideline exchange with Dirk- Yes, he has to get better, smarter and more situationally-aware. He also has to execute within the game plan. BUT we also need him to be a playmaker- a spark- when that game plan stinks (and there have been plenty of scheme stinkers from Dirk).

It’s too bad the national narrative about his play (I’m not talking about his person) largely implies that he’s a bust. He’s far, far from it. With all of his flaws, right now, he still might be the best/most complete QB this team has ever had.

That’s not to say he’s as good as we need him to be…he’s not. It’s a process. The D should be better (can’t get statistically worse), he should have a running game and better line play- that’s what makes the Uber situation so crappy- that runs the risk of derailing his progress and development and drives a deep wedge into his relationship with the organization.

  27. AlteredEgo Says:

BucBeliever…. as if this makes any difference in a fans ability to have an opinion…so how many Buc season ticket games have you paid for….if that is any measure I’m pretty sure no one here has paid for more tickets than me…. so does that make my opinion greater than anyone else’s? 🙂

  28. Frank Pillow Says:

    Joe,

If Jameis, the QB, is ultimately judged on wins vs losses, then the full picture of the N.O. game should be painted, right? Bad Jameis forced throws to Evans. Good Jameis throws a gutsy, beautiful ball to Godwin (over his HCs objections) to win the game. Taking the draft implications out of this, which Jameis is the right Jameis that night?

Team Glazer…the longer you hold onto this jerk, the fewer fans you’ll have. Period.

Bye Walter. We won’t miss you fair weather fans. Or the fans that refused to support Jameis since day one he became one of OUR BUCCANEERS. You think one accusation over the last 4 years is somehow vindication that you were right about his character concerns?
People have lost their minds, must be that Florida sun baking your brain something stupid.

  30. Joe Blahak Says:

No time like the present…Move on ASAP! …why delay a QB transition? Get clear of this mess and everyone knows where they stand before the season starts. You go into the season with this thing hanging on the team and QB switches after the season starts with a few games? More turmoil if Fitz wins and then a “who should play” thing starts. If there is actually someone that would take him for a 1st rounder, Goodbye!

  31. Jolly Bucs Fan Says:

Suspension official, jameis has put out a statement

  32. Joe Blahak Says:

OK, he just pleaded guilty. GOODBYE MR. POOR DECISIONS!

  33. zzbucs Says:

all this situation is very hypocritical!!!! Makes me sick!!

  34. Jolly Bucs Fan Says:

Jameis isnt going anywhere, he will serve his suspension and if he has a decent 2018 year he will be resigned.

Its a 1st time offense, and not that big of deal considering he never pushed this girl any further and stopped his advance the second she said something. Still bad. but not the end of the world.

Noone talks about Rothlisberger and others who committed way worse but are still playing through successful careers.

  35. Im tired and 87 is right Says:

Imagine if good boy Peyton Manning had to deal with this jury of a society when he sat on some girls face…never would he have become the hall of fame QB we all saw. In the end we have all made mistakes I do believe Jameis will have learned from this situation and will also become a great QB for this team. Go Bucs!

  38. jmarkbuc Says:

The NFL suspended Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Jameis Winston for the first three games of the season for violating the league’s personal conduct policy, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported, per sources informed of the situation.

The Bucs open the season at New Orleans and then home for Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. Winston will be eligible to make his debut on Sept. 30 at Chicago.

    Winston offered this statement:

“The NFL informed me today that I will be suspended for the first three games of the season. First and foremost, I would like to say I’m sorry to the Uber driver for the position I put you in. It is uncharacteristic of me and I genuinely apologize. In the past 2 1/2 years my life has been filled with experiences, opportunities and events that have helped me grow, mature and learn, including the fact that I have eliminated alcohol from my life.

“I know I have to hold myself to a higher standard on and off the field and that I have a responsibility to my family, community, and teammates to live above the platform with which God has blessed me. I apologize to my teammates, the Buccaneers organization and fans for letting them down and for not being able to be out there for the first three games of the season. Although I am disappointed in the NFL’s decision, I understand the NFL’s process, and I embrace this as an opportunity to take advantage of the resources available to help me achieve the goals that I have for myself. “I now look forward to putting this behind me and I will continue to work hard every day to be a positive influence in my community and be the best person, teammate and leader I can be.

    Bucko

You completely missed the point of that. Fans absolutely have an influence on the players on the field.

You guys never let me down with your ignorance.

  45. Ghastly Bucs Says:

It’s funny, because these are all the reasons fans didn’t want him. FSU homers wanted him and got him. Everyone else saw they writing on the wall. He is average to above average, but nothing special. You all got what you deserved when you drafted him (Josh Freeman 2.0). A QB with high potential, but will probably never achieve it. That is unfortunate, because as a Bucs fan you want your QB to be good and you wish success on the whole team. Yet, here he is and not performing to the standards he should be.

Also, to those who promised a Super Bowl with Jameis in 2-3 years…LMAO
