Kwon Seeing Dollar Signs

June 15th, 2018

Checks loaded with zeros coming.

Bucs Pro Bowl middle linebacker Kwon Alexander will be an unrestricted free agent after the 2018 season. And he should be a very wealthy young man some time next year.

Why? Well, consider the Texans yesterday gave their middle linebacker Benardrick McKinney a five-year, $50 million contract extension, highlighted by $21 million guaranteed. One could argue Alexander is a better than McKinney. Both were drafted in 2015.

Joe doesn’t think it is a matter of if, but of when the Bucs re-up Alexander. A franchise tag wouldn’t be out of the question. But either option for Alexander would require someone’s salary getting tossed overboard. Whose will it be?

keeping kwon is a no brainer…..hope he comes into camp in shape and has worked on his tackling technique and shedding blocks……continue to mater your craft kwon…..

Bucs get no respect. Can’t believe NFL.com listed the NFL’s all under 25 team n not 1 Buccaneer made the list.
    No Kwon
    No MEvans
    No Winston
    However,
    Yes Falcons linebacker Dion Jones
    Yes Rams Jarred Goff
    Yes Vikings Stephon Diggs
They even listed players from the following teams:
    49’s.Colts, Bears,Browns, Giants
We must conquer n overcome this upcoming season, anything less is unacceptable. We must regain our RESPECT!!!

  4. teacherman777 Says:

I am very sorry to say this but….

It might be prudent to let Kwon walk next year and then slide Beckwith inside and let our other linebackers compete for the SLB job. Cichy, Glanton, Bond, Joe Dirt. Also, why couldn’t Noah Spence play SLB?

Beckwith will be very cheap for the next 3 years.

We would be smart to invest in our O-line and Jameis before we worry about Kwon.

Moreover, the decision about D-Jax will need to come after this year. if D-Jax is scoring touchdowns and helping us win, then we must keep him.

  5. The Buc Realist Says:

This is one of the reasons that you trade the older players for draft picks instead of trying to build a line in free-agency to finally make gmc better!!!!! We should have had mulitple extra picks for the 2019 offseason!!!!!!!!

To have cap decisions without playoff appearances just shows how bad the roster has been mismanaged!!!!!

Keep fixing the “real” problem, the roster!!!!!!!!!

    GO Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  6. The Buc Realist Says:

To add to Teacherman777, you know the roster is heading in the right direction when other teams over pay for the Bucs players and they start getting 3rd round compensatory picks!!!!!!!!!

Keep fixing the “real” problem, the roster!!!!!!!!!

    GO Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  7. Tampabaybucfan Says:

We have several players that need to be paid….I do think some possible trades are in order…..

    Djax (this year if possible)
    Brate….yes, I know…he’s great & we just signed him but he’s tradeable
    GMC
    LVD
    Kwon

We need to take care of Winston, Smith & Marpet,,,,,

Why let players walk when we can trade

I think it is going to be very difficult to sign everyone…..

The obvious money lies with Djax, Sweezy & Gholston…..that’s around $20 mil.

  8. SOEbuc Says:

    Buc Realist

We could get a lot in a trade for LVD. I love him and he’s still a great player but he’s getting older and is owed $20 million in his next two years before he’s UFA in 2020. We could get picks, players, and save some serious cash. Bring in a nice new SLB in the first round next year.

  9. 813bucboi Says:

wait a minute…..last year the “real problem” was the trenches…..now in 2018, the “real problem” is the entire roster……give me a f’ing break!!!!

the real problem is when your picking in the top10 every year….if the coaches can get us to stop picking in the top10 every year, then we’ll be able to build thru the draft and resign our own players….players that produce and become leaders like kwon….

teacher777, im all for having beckwith as our MLB but im not in favor of letting talent walk out the door….gotta find a way to keep kwon if he continues to produce and be the heart and soul of the defense…..

  11. Lord Cornelius Says:

Who knows what we could have gotten for McCoy.

that’s the only real trade asset we’ve had in terms of an older player that would have maybe netted a 2nd round pick or something

And if we make that move then there would be excuses about re-building the D-line.

This roster isn’t a bunch of scrubs. They have enough horses to win some f*cking games. Go f*cking do it.

  12. unbelievable Says:

I thought rhealist was an actual fan, but apparently he just works for team Glazer. Or team Koetter.

Cuz this dude has been making excuses for the team since January, and it’s still not even preseason! Unreal.

Maybe you’re spending too much time outside talking to your heard of sheep.

“The obvious money lies with Djax, Sweezy & Gholston…..that’s around $20 mil.

TBBF…certainly agree that would be the first place I’d look. I think our LB corps is deep enough to perhaps try a gamble with one of our top two in a trade for draft picks next year. Need to stock some cheap young draft picks to hold down salaries as well. I love LVD and Kwon but if the deal was right I like our backups as well.

  14. Tampabaybucfan Says:

The Realist and I do agree on one thing….Mark Dominick drafts and personnel moves (Bennett) were a complete and utter disaster for our Bucs for which Joe continues to give him a pass.

We are just now recovering but the window for winning is closing. Coaches need to take this team now full of talent to the playoffs.

And, I’ll add this for the Realist…..!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  15. Defense Rules Says:

@813bucboi … “keeping kwon is a no brainer…..hope he comes into camp in shape and has worked on his tackling technique and shedding blocks.” IF you hadn’t caveated it bucboi might’ve bought it, BUT … your comment speaks for itself. You’re not sure he’ll come to camp in shape? His tackling needs work? He has trouble shedding blocks? So WHY is it a ‘no-brainer’ to keep him at a cost of say $10 mil a year?

Joe asked a very thought-provoking question: Who gets tossed overboard IF we re-sign Kwon? Go a little deeper & next year we’ll have to pay big $$$ (IF we keep them) to Jameis, Donovan, Ali, Hump, Grimes, Fitz, Conte & several others. Bucs won’t have the money IF we keep the current roster in tact. Personally convinced that GMC & DJAX are goners after this year, and MAYBE LVD. On the fence as to whether or not we try to re-sign Kwon (admittedly much prefer to see Beckwith play MLB & have a hunch Kwon would do much better outside, maybe even replacing LVD). Or not.

  16. ManzielMadness Says:

    @dmatt

    Gotta win to earn respect….

And I agree with LC and 813 we have enough talent on this roster to win NOW. I like DK and JL but we have enough pieces in place to win some damn games. As to Kwon…. he’ll get paid, don’t see us keeping DJax or Dotson another year.

  17. 813bucboi Says:

    DR

kwon is a no brainer based on talent and intangibles alone….

Winston is a no brainer even tho he has holes in his game…..

kwon is the most talent LB we’ve had since the golden years….ruud and foster
were never as talent and gifted as kwon….

Im not suggesting kwon wont come into TC in shape and over weight….I just want him to come in better shape than he did last year to avoid hammy issues….

imo, he’s playing out of position and that’s why he has trouble shedding blocks….if he played his natural position I doubt we see those problems….he tackling issues were due to him missing time with his hammy….

but he still has to perfect his craft…..much like bobby wagner….each offseason he focuses on the basics….tackling, shedding blocks and dropping into coverage….and he gets better and better each year….

like Winston kwon is still young and far from a finished product…..you don’t let talent go because of a few coachable issues…..kwons problems are easily fixable…..

no way you let the heart and soul of your defense walk out the door….especially when you have no one else on that side of the ball to replace his talent or leadership…..

  18. 813bucboi Says:

I don’t see why folks are trying to cross a bridge before they even arrive to it….

imo, if we’re still depending on fitz, grimes, hump, conte, sweezy, gholston, Dotson, tandy for production in 2019, then that means we failed miserably in 2018…..by the end of the 2018 season, those players shouldn’t even be on the field….we have their replacement on the roster now….hell, i’ll even put GMC in that category due to his age….

813bucboi … “I don’t see why folks are trying to cross a bridge before they even arrive to it.” I agree bucboi. You do agree that Joe was the one who opened up Pandora’s Box with “someone getting tossed overboard” don’t you?

Agree with you about Kwon that “he’s playing out of position and that’s why he has trouble shedding blocks….if he played his natural position I doubt we see those problems.” And that’s why I said that he MIGHT end up replacing LVD (seriously doubt we can afford TWO $10 mil LBs … probably more than that with inflation … given the other high-rollers we’ve got to sign).

  21. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ St. Pete

For me, the key barometer for trading players is…..would you need to use a high draft pick the next year to replace them?

    Djax…..No
    Brate….No
    LVD……Not likely
    Kwon….Not likely
    GMC…..Maybe

You trade a player like Donovan Smith for example….you would likely have to draft a LT. Same with Marpet.

So….we should definitely resign Smith, Marpet, Winston….but not necessarily Kwon. I’d love to keep everyone but that may not be realistic.

As far as the Contes, Tandys, Beckwiths & even Humphries….you have to have some of those lower paid mediocre players performing in the mix to make things work financially.

    1Gr8Buc Says
“Say adios to djax and/or gmac.”

More like DJax, Sweezy, Dotson, Beau Allen, Grimes, Fitzpatrick, & Gholston (next year). That will clear up a bunch right there.

I think McCoy might have a record year this year, so I doubt he goes anywhere next year.

Well, Brate is going nowhere. He only just got his contract…and Koetter needs two good TEs, not one.

Kwon is going nowhere because he was the start of turning around the defense. He brought the new attitude, and if you trade LVD, Beckwith will have to replace LVD.

I believe LVD will be gone after this year.

DJax would be a great trade option this year, but I don’t see it happening. More likely he will be cut next year. Unless Jon Gruden is dumb enough to give some picks (what did he trade for Keyshawn? Two firsts? I’d take a second at this point, or even a third just before the deadline).

To this day, I believe the presence of DJax has done more harm than good.

  24. 813bucboi Says:

    DR

yeah I realize joe popped it off….not harping on you…..sorry if it came across that way…..

and I think your right about LVD but he doesn’t strike me as the type that will “chase the money”…..he seems like he prefers comfort over cash and he’s comfortable here in tampa…..he seems like the type that will restructure imo….or at least I hope so….lol…

if he does have a great year, that would be the perfect time to trade him….his value would be higher…..better to get rid of a player a year too early vs a year too late…..unfortunately, I think we’re in that territory right now….

of course everything changes if we start losing……lol….everyone is on the hook

  27. Trench War Says:

Let’s decide all this at the end of the season. This year is important too many of these players and getting paid all hinges on their “prove it” season. We don’t know how Kwon will play the season. Will he be average or lights out? If he plays lights out then we have an important decision to make, but then again if he has just an average season we still have an important decision to make, but it could be a lot cheaper.

  28. Buccon Says:

I don’t think Bucs resign qwon when you can draft the same type of player for less money who brings everything qwon brings!! My opinion!! It will be smarter to just let him walk if thats an option!! This is a team sport and a Business!! No way Bucs go over 50 million for Kwon they gave David and David not going nowhere him in McCoy gone retire Bucs that’s a god given fact
