GMC’s Strange OTA Days

June 11th, 2018

What is going on?

Joe isn’t sure if this is coordinated or just happenstance, but it sure smells like someone has a plan to light a fire under Bucs stud defensive tackle Gerald McCoy.

There just are too many weird things happening.

The first was that new Bucs center Ryan Jensen, who has an established reputation as a scrapper, said he was told by someone or some people with the Bucs to get in the grill of teammates and if need be, throw down. Get nasty. In OTAs (underwear football) no less!

And who just happens to be on the other side of Jensen? GMC.

Then, America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, told former Bucs rock star general manager Mark Dominik on SiriusXM NFL Radio that Jensen and GMC were getting into it.

Then last week, we all saw the video captured by Jeff Tewksbury of WTVT-TV, Channel 13, of new Bucs defensive line coach Brentson Buckner absolutely tearing GMC a new one.

Maybe Joe is a bit too cynical, but Joe is beginning to wonder if this is an organized pattern of some sort? And maybe Joe has watched “The Godfather” way, way too many times but this almost seems like someone with the Bucs put out a hit on GMC.

The thing with Buckner, he is an intelligent man. He had to know the cameras were rolling during the 30-minute period that OTA practices are allowed to be recorded by media.

What makes Buckner’s explosion on GMC so rare is that most coaches would pull guys aside or erupt in their position meetings, away from prying eyes, especially in dealing with a seasoned veteran who is a regular Pro Bowl participant. Certainly they’re not freaking out while the cameras were rolling.

Yeah, it could have been as simple as Buckner is just being real and he doesn’t give two spits about cameras.

But it sure comes across like someone in the organization is trying to send a message to GMC to raise his already top shelf game to a new level.

Joe needs to change his moniker for the soft one from from stud Dt to dud Dt. Even the Bucs hierarchy are seeing what a wus the dude is.

  2. BringBucsBack Says:

Joe’s, if your suspicions are true then, it just means that they expect more because, Gerald has more!

  3. AlteredEgo Says:

    McCoy is what he is….

  4. The Buc Realist Says:

Its not an organized hit, but just a “reality” of GMC declining play the last 3 years!!!!!!!!!!

    GO Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!

  5. Steve in Mad Beach Says:

They’re paying him an exorbitant amount of money, I’m sure they’re not happy that he was the leader of the worst defense in the league.

Warren Sapp, playing the same position, would never have let that happen!

  6. Steve in Mad Beach Says:

They can’t be happy that they’re paying him an exorbitant amount of money to be the leader of the worst defense in the league.

Warren Sapp, playing the same position, would never have let that happen!

  7. Bucsfanman Says:

It’s been noted that several defensive players fared very well when Schiano was coaching. Soft coaching=soft play, perhaps.
Maybe GMC has another level. Either way, I like the toughness the coaching staff is trying to instill in this team. Now, it’s only June. If this translates to games played in December and beyond then I’m all for it.

  8. martinni Says:

Yell at the best and the rest will pay attention. Mc Coy gets hit and double teamed 17 games per year. It’s just another day at the office for him. Several players including Vita wii line up accross from Jenkins.

  9. GrafikDetail Says:

GMC is not the problem & never has been… just sad the Bucs front offices waited almost 10 years to get him some REAL help on the line

  10. Wausa Says:

I used to be a defender of GMC, but not anymore.
He has incredible quickness to penetrate the backfield. The problem is he typically doesn’t finish plays.

What makes Aaron Donald so good is he also has elite quickness to get into the backfield, but he almost always finishes the play.

  11. buccan8 Says:

Simple stuff–Coach Buck is doing what Jay Hayes and Gerald have been unsuccessful to do: make those around them better; starting with the Stud himself.

  12. Capt.Tim Says:

    Sad clickbait
If anyone believes that a one year starter, career benchwarmer, can have any impact on our 6 time probowl DT,

Then you are as loco as Jensen is overpaid.

McCoy has spent his career, throwing around the best centers and Guards in the league. 2 at a time.

Jensen is an upgrade- but he sure isnt as good as the players McCoy has faced.
Otherwise, Jensen wouldnt have spent years warming a bench.

If they are” going at it”, its because Jensen is getting thrown around like a first year starter. And its pissing him off.

  13. Not there yet Says:

Yes Joe you are cynical but if you were right wouldn’t that be admitting gmc is softif they are deliberately doing all this to light a fire under him it because says he doesn’t have one. Passion and fire don’t apply to gmc were heard him mic’d up on the field, he’s the same laid back guy all the time but he happens to be a good player. He more than anyone needs to be yelled at because he’s the entitled one which makes him a weak link mentally and his mindset is the only thing he needs to change because his horrible run blocking skills

  14. Tampabaybucfan Says:

And there was a second gunman on the grassy knoll.

  15. Reality-is-a-Beotch Says:

Gmc is an embarrassment to masculinity and pro football. Nothing more than a selfish me first camera hound. With coaches trying to hold players accountability it wont be long before glazers run the big mean coach out of town or the pathetic soft one runs home to his safespace and doll collection with another soft injury. Stop wasting time trade the bum for a 6th and replace with a player with heart.

  16. Bucnjim Says:

What good coaches like to do is work on a players weakness! They also set up plays like the hard count that pissed him off. I’m positive he told Winston give them a hard count on this play and let’s see what idiot jumps. Oh it’s the player looking directly at the ball and a nine year veteran. All the while saying to himself I’m going to break my foot off in his a$$.

  17. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Come on, Joe. These sheep will buy into anything they read, but the writing on the wall is obvious…Buckner was brought in to fix the worst defensive line in football. Gerald McCoy is only one part of that.

It is far more likely that there is a coordinated effort to let the entire defensive line unit know that mediocre is no longer tolerated.

Gerald McCoy is a great one to focus on, because by riding his case, the rest of the line knows they can be targeted too.

Is a fire being lit? I sure hope so! For the entire defense! Every single player, and that includes McCoy.

  18. Bucnjim Says:

Also as a coach that makes Buckner look BAD an I’m sure he won’t tolerate that from anyone.

  19. Reality-is-a-Beotch Says:

All the talent in the world or the great firsr step to nowhere means nothing when tinkerbell is tougher and has more heart. Gmc is hands down the biggest fraud in bucs history. Results prove it.

  20. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Last year, Baker cost the team big by jumping off sides, which was the whole reason for Buckner raising a fuss in that instance. Winston drew McCoy off sides. Most times, McCoy does not get tricked like that.

Buckner is just pounding it into everyone that it cannot happen again.

  21. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Reality-is-a-Beotch (TMax)Says:
“All the talent in the world or the great firsr step to nowhere means nothing when tinkerbell is tougher and has more heart. Gmc is hands down the biggest fraud in bucs history.”

Seriously, can you be any more obvious?

  22. Reality-is-a-Beotch Says:

    Bonzi

Can you be more ignorant and delusional is the real question. Just another loser gmc apologists with a conspiracy theory.

Gmc is and has been the MAIN issue and the captain of the basement years his entire career. Watch this team flourish when that soft pathetic loser is gone.

  23. German Buc Says:

I don’t think so, Bucnjim. Do you really think the old guy up in Boston tries to make his 40+ years old QB a better runner? Great coaches refer to a players strength! Strengthen a strength means weaken a weakness.

  24. Lamarcus Says:

Good and it’s about time. GMC has had no expectations or no accountability over the years turned him into a baby Huey.

GMC was one of the biggest divas of last year and he shouldnt been cut

  25. Lamarcus Says:

I mean SHOULD be cut immediately.

  26. Defense Rules Says:

@Joe … “Yeah, it could have been as simple as Buckner is just being real and he doesn’t give two spits about cameras.” I vote for that one Joe. If Buckner has any marching orders from above, they almost surely relate to making this Bucs’ DLine the meanest, toughest DLine in the NFL. And that goes for every member of the DLine … no favorites in Buckner’s world I have a feeling. As Baron von Richthofen was quoted as saying after he instructed his squadron that their mission was solely to “shoot down any enemy fighters who dared to show up in their area … “Anything else is rubbish”.

BTW, in your case of being too cynical Joe, just because you’re paranoid doesn’t mean that you’re not being followed.

  27. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    It’s quite simple….nobody gets a pass from Buckner…he’s sending a great message….

  28. Reality-is-a-Beotch Says:

When your team captain states publicly his least favorite season was his 10 win season that is all you need to know about this pos career loser. Let me be so kind as to translate the meaning “I’d rather lose than win”

  29. m0j0 Says:

This is basically Rocky III. GMC is being trained by Apollo Creed’s corner now. He’s got to get the eye of the tiger.

  30. The Buc Realist Says:

Maybe to truly motivate GMC to make the deep playoff run, that they should show and tell him how many camera’s and interviews there are during media week before the superbowl!!!!!!!!!!!!! Bet we see him in the 4th quarters then!!!!!!!!!!

    GO Bucs!!!!!!!!!!

  31. 99.97.92.55.47.40.28.20.7 Says:

GMC is a HOF Talent and has played through legitimate injuries virtually every season. Played-through, as in been on the field, not taking weeks off, so that we didn’t get blown out every week. The guy is a trooper. Reminds me a bit of LeBron trying to take on the Warriors single-handedly, GMC playing in the NFC South with an oft-injured group of under the radar guys around him. I don’t have any issues with coaches getting on their players, but to claim the guy is soft or not good is just preposterous. The guy is a top 2 DL in Buc’s History, edging out a HOF’er in my opinion. I think this is the year we see the defense really click.
    GO BUCS!!!

  32. Joe Says:

As Baron von Richthofen was quoted as saying

Damn, a Red Baron quote. Joe is impressed! Well done.

  33. Reality-is-a-Beotch Says:

    99.97.92.55.47.40.28.20.7

Results prove he is nothing more than a career loser

You must be his or bonzis mother. Clearly not a man.

  34. 813bucboi Says:

it would be more impactful if dirk and smitty were doing some of the yelling…..that would set the tone……

but nice guys come in last……dirk and smitty are as nice as they come…..

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!….#PRESSURESONTHECOACHES!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!!

  35. webster Says:

    @ bonzai

Gmc has committed many offside penalties in his career.

  36. 99.97.92.55.47.40.28.20.7 Says:

Haha I appreciate the Monday morning chuckle. I will give you this, the guy is not a Suh type of aggressor. But, in Joe’s words, he is a stud. Also like Buckner, a little hot coaching can never hurt. Hope he and the rest of the D plays healthy this year. I think we can win a playoff game if so.

  37. Bucnjim Says:

Comparing McCoy to Labron? One of the all time best ever vs. an above average one dimensional player? McCoy=Rodman at best.

  38. Blind Melon Says:

    Conspiracy theory more appropriately.

    Entertaining read though.

GMC playing mad makes sense though, it will add another positive (and may be that cherry on the top) to his play and participation.

    Ugh. I hate the offseason.

  39. Lamarcus Says:

    GMC = Dwight Howard

  40. Dooshlarue Says:

    Somewhere, Hawaiian Buc is crying.
    His hero is a fraud.

  41. Bucsfan951 Says:

    Tmaxi reincarnated as reality… fml

  42. SCBucsFan Says:

BF951 how sad must your life be to make up a new name to continue to troll.

  43. Reality-is-a-Beotch Says:

    Bucnjim

Rodman was a tough gritty grinder the furthest from the heartless gmc. Tinker Bell or Richard Simmins are the closest comparison to gmc.

  44. Reality-is-a-Beotch Says:

    Sc

It is not trolling when it’s reality. Wake up and except reality your soft super hero is a heartless fraud which is getting exposed.

  45. Capt.Tim Says:

The NFL coaches and players keep voting McCoy to probowls, and top 100
I’ll trust their opinions more than some stupid F**ks posting here.

  46. SCBucsFan Says:

Joe it was so much better without TMax

  47. johnnybuc Says:

defiently reading waaayyy too much into normal things that happen at a football practice … coaches yelling happens all the time , oline and dline get into it all the time. jensen is scrabby in general so he was bound to get into it with mccoy at some point regardless if a coach told him to get into it with the dline or not (i’m sure they did, and i’m sure they didn’t specifically say mccoy) for some reason you like to read way to deep into things that go on at practice that happens at literally every single nfl teams practices .

  48. Reality-is-a-Beotch Says:

    Capt.Tim

Selfish personal achievements that have never helped the team win a single meaningful game in his career. Top 100 and pro bowls are meaningless in a team sport.

Would you not rather have powerful in game plays or dominate performances to defend the loser rather than having to play the subjective politically correct his peers like him so he his great bs. On field results are all that matter. His peers love him because they know how easy it is to beat the bum.

  52. Dapostman Says:

Aaron Donald’s Rams went 6-10, 7-9, & 4-12 his first 3 years before last years 11-5 Rams record. If you think Aaron Donald was responsible for that 11-5 record well I’ve got some Arizona ocean front property to sell you. McCoy is an asset not a liability.

  53. Tnew Says:

Maybe Buckner has figured out that GMC cares very most about his public persona as GMC knows this is the easiest way to the Pro Bowl. Good chance Buck has gotten on GMC already.

My feeling is that Buckner has watched the film and realized a few things

For the Bucs to play their very best the D-Line has to play well and for the D-Line to play well, GMC has to play more disciplined and consistently.

Unlike much of the local and national media, Buckner doesn’t care about how interesting his collection of Marvel comics or his likesble personality. Buck only needs GMC to perform.

  54. Bucsfanman Says:

It’s a TEAM game. EVERYBODY has to contribute, not just the DT.

Dapostman- People will have you believe that a DT is the sole reason for a 5-11 season. Don’t try to bring levity to this conversation!

  55. Destinjohnny Says:

I only played from 4th grade through high school
But every coach I hated we seem to have won
Every coach I liked… we lost
U have to stir it up and create emotion

  56. Mike Johnson Says:

I would not read to much into this. GMC is what and who he is. You don’t just get named to the pro bowl by coaches and players because..they like you. He’s not going to change and he does not need to do so.Just because a player has a mean smirk on his face does not improve his play. If it did, Our Bucs would be Champs! (chuckle). All GMC needs to do is stay on top of his game and be ready to play. He has brought in every Sunday despite not having a supporting cast. Hopefully he has a better one this season.

I disagree, Richard Simmons was a pretty tough lilttle guy

  58. Steven007 Says:

Too busy to comment appreciably on this epic, but it’s nice to see Trollmax (Reality) engaged once again since his favorite superhero is the OP. You get ’em, tiger lily.

  59. RustyRhinos Says:

Hey Reality is a beoitoch, you should try a few of your “weak” guy Richard Simmons workout videos, yes I know most are on VHS tapes but I am sure there is a VCR in the vastness of moms basement. Just please ask Mommy for some and your spice girls towel. Because the reality is a beoitoch, it will wear you out after the first ten minutes. And do not forget the big women in the video, who will be doing what you can not. Such a tough guy you are. Beoitoch.

Good for our new Dline coach a man who regularly kicked our a$$ very game he played against us. And who was a great DT who had to be game planned against or he would wreck your game plans. If Coach Buckner can get our pro bowl DT to play with a bit more aggressive nature this will help our Pro bowl DT and the rest of our Dline produce many more positive results. A good a$$ chewing has always improved morale when it starts from the TOP down. So GMC is our Top Dlineman so he gets this first public dressing down. GMC is a grown man and a professional, he will use it as a motivational tool , for him and his linemates to improve their stock. If not bye bye Falisha….
    Go Bucs!

  60. louis Says:

it has got to be killing tmax to be unable to comment on a gmc posting!

  61. Buc believer Says:

Louis if you believe that Tmax has not posted since being “banned” you must also be o e of the diminishing fans who still has faith in the biggest flop and money stealer in all of Bucdom GMC

  62. Couch Fan Says:

If his game was truely “top shelf” there would be no reason for the Bucs to want him to raise his play. Deny it all you want to but we’ve seen and heard about it all off season from your own articles. Soft, no passion, Inconsistant defense. All things said about the face of the defense for years. The sheep continue to point fingers in every other direction but its crystal clear that the ones at 1 Buc are starting to figure it out. FINALLY!

  63. ManzielMadness Says:

He has a quick first step, problem is he just gets redirected way too easy

  64. Reach87 Says:

I think (hope) Buckner realizes that he has a Defensive line, not just one player. It makes sense to raise the level of everyone in that unit, because it underperformed as a whole. It doesn’t make sense to keep calling arguably our best Defensive player (I didn’t say HOF’er) soft, not a man, or out of his name. Some of you sound like 2nd grade babies, the way you cry about McCoy and make things up about him. Its funny and sad. BL: We got phase 1 mostly done (get better players); now we need to coach them better (that’s what Buckner is doing, I think), which is phase 2; then we need to play better and make better real-time decisions and adjustments on game week, which is phase 3. We are on track. Go Bucs!

  65. stpetebucsfan Says:

It’s funny what a little spin does. Here when it comes to GMC the spin is all negative as in softie mcicecream.

There is another way for folks with an open mind to view this. At minimum another possibility.

Jensen said he picked out the biggest baddest Raven and started a fight early on to earn his spurs. Perhaps the fact that he picked out GMC means he and the OL consider GMC the barn rooster on the DL? Hard for some here to consider.

And of course Marpet picked the same opponent for his fights. Could it be that GMC is viewed as the tough guy on our DL by our OL?

  66. feelthepewterpower Says:

How is Gerald soft when the guy virtually played with one arm ala Noah Spence. Spence gets credit for being a tough guy, but Gerald taking on double teams with one arm is expected.

  67. webster Says:

    @ st pete

Marpet did not pick a fight with mccoy when he 1st got here. It was reported that the division 3 player was holding his own against gmc in practice in one on one drills which is much different than picking a fight. Now that did not stop the gmc bashers from attacking because gmc could not dominate a division 3 player.

  68. stpetebucsfan Says:

Correction accepted Webster. Still it’s clear despite his rep here GMC is considered the measuring bar for our OL. Perhaps it’s the Pro-Bowls.

  69. BigMacAttack Says:

Film doesn’t lie and GMC has tons of bad film combined with a few great plays. The staff knows this I’m sure Coach Buck has seen all of it. Swaggy made GMC worse by providing him a clown buddy. Gerald is not a great player but he has the ability to be great. I was really hoping Licht would have traded him because it would have netted more good young players. Gerald, If you want to know what greatness looks like, look at Alex Ovechkin. He willed that team to a cup and lead by example. It was amazing how his whole team rose up and took it. And I’m no Capitals fan but I appreciate great players. Gerald Baby Huey has a long way to go.

  70. BoJim Says:

I think they want an ‘angry’ GMC. Me too.

  71. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I don’t understand to point of banning TMax when he can just create a new username and instantly return. To me, TMax is mocking Joe’s authority. It’s as if he is treating Joe like he treats GMC. TMax is even reverting to form. As usual, he insults people who disagree with him.

On topic, if the defensive line had been built properly around him, McCoy would be considered the top DT in the league long before now. But he had no one to work with.

And so far as making players better? How do you know he didn’t? Maybe they were just so bad that what we saw was their best????

This year, he finally had a good line around him, and the haters are freaking out. They know he’s about to prove them wrong and have a 10+ sack season.

  72. SOEbuc Says:

    Bonzai

“This year, he finally had a good line around him, and the haters are freaking out. They know he’s about to prove them wrong and have a 10+ sack season.”

He’s been double covered pretty much his entire multi pro bowl career with no one else on the line except Michael Bennett. Now he’s in between a multi pro bowl DE and 350 lb. DT. I’m thinking he very well could get double digit sacks and I think he wants em with a passion getting older every year but still capable. Excited to see him.

I don’t think Buckner was showing off for the cameras. Every player that’s talked to the media about him has said he doesn’t have any favorites. People think a coach chewing out a top player in front of the rest of the team means they’re acting, but he was busting GMC because he was the one that f#cked up, not cus he’s the top, and was doing it front of the rest because he’s not gonna have that from anyone.

  73. Bobby M. Says:

Its interesting that we are reporting for maybe the first time in McCoy’s NFL career that a position coach has yelled at him. I dont care who you are, anyone can be pushed to be better, to shoot for a higher level of play. Frankly, i think Winston needs this…..Jimbo Fisher rode Winston constantly….Winston responded well. The objective is ZERO mistakes by EVERY player……that’s the difference in the playoff teams vs the rest. The really good teams dont give easy yds. The old Bucs didn’t want to give you a single inch. That’s the mindset. McCoy…Winston…they seem to think because they make enough really good plays, then they get a pass on a bonehead play every once in a while.
