Fun With Quinn Vs. JPP

June 7th, 2018

Remember that collective March freakout Bucs fans had when beastly 27-year-old defensive end Robert Quinn was traded from the Rams to the Dolphins for a fourth-round pick and a swap of sixth-rounders?

Oh, the rage was flowing from Lakeland to Largo. Bucs fans were screaming at general manager Jason Licht for letting such an opportunity slip by for the worst pass rushing team in the NFL.

It turned out Licht had a plan. He was focused on a deal for 29-year-old Jason Pierre-Paul, and Licht made that deal weeks later, giving up a third-round pick.

No move of any kind this offseason soothed Bucs fans more than acquiring JPP. Not only is JPP a great player, he made the Quinn pass feel just right.

That written, it’s still going to be fun this season to see how Quinn fares vs JPP. GMs, like it or not, are also partly judged by the players they didn’t/could have acquired or drafted, not just the ones the secured.

So far, JPP has been passing on spring practices for the Bucs. It’s unclear way. Quinn, however, has been dazzling in South Florida, per a Miami Herald report yesterday.

Joe found that especially interesting because there’s a high standard for edge rushers in Miami, where Cameron Wake has been a double-digit sack man in three of the past four seasons.

“He’s a unique athlete. He bends probably as good as anybody I’ve ever been around It’s weird to watch sometimes, to be honest with you,” Dolphins defensive coordinator Matt Burke said of Quinn. “He comes off the corner and sometimes you think he’s actually rushing too high and gets past the quarterback, then he just turns his foot and plants it and bends it. His knee is about two feet off the ground and he can really hug it. It’s pretty fun.”

Joe just wants to see JPP play well, which should improve Gerald McCoy’s production and make the entire defense better. But it will be interesting to see which Florida team scored the better deal, especially considering how rare it was to have very productive defensive ends hit the trade market for a relatively low price.

Passing on Quinn was a mistake. Quinn’s younger, cheaper and wouldn’t have cost a pick. Then again, maybe they tried but Miami swooped in and wooed him with a sweeter offer. But anyway – Joe loves embellishing fan feelings, lol.

  2. LouisFriend Says:

Whoops, forgot that he was traded and not an FA. Still, the Bucs may have tried but Miami offered more.

  3. Lord Cornelius Says:

Difference in JPP vs Quinn is JPP will play on all types of downs whereas Quinn will be limited to more obvious pass rush situations only.

Quinn’s younger but has an injury history already and the Rams were limiting his snaps a lot last year

we’ll see….I just hope JPP comes to camp in shape and ready to work….gives this locker room a sense of urgency and toughness that we’ve been lacking for so long…..

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!…#PRESSURESONTHECOACHES!!!….GO BUCS!!!!

I am in Giants country… My two cents is I like JPP more. He is a every down player. Folks up here weren’t all that bummed to see him go as they called more of a “run stuffer”(I disagree with this)… Me personally? Any “run stuffer” regularly getting 8+ sacks yearly is a great addition in my book. He and McCoy will rarely if ever come off the field and I am pumped to see that lineup.

Joe Says: “He is the best quarterback this team has ever had but that does not mean he is John Elway.”
    ______________
Elway is one of the most Overrated QBs of All Time. Let’s hope JW is better than Elway who only had a completion % above 60 twice in his entire career.

  7. Greg Says:

It wouldn’t be the first time Light traded for a player totally not interested in being here. Your number one free agent doesnt want to be here learning a new defense with new team mates? Absolutely embarrassing. Michael Johnson, TJ Ward, Chris Baker all over again. Big difference between a younger free agent still wanting their next contract and a 30 year old who has already been paid and has rings being discarded from a successful program to here. Think Light, think! Quinn is at practice, wants a ring, and young enough to target that big contract.

  8. Greg Says:

Of course I also forgot Deshaun Jackson as another already been paid disinterested free agent signing by Light.

  9. Cover Deuce Says:

JPP is the better all around player. Quinn will be a force on 3rd down, but JPP is the type of guy who can wreck an offense on all 3 downs.

  10. Buccernutter Says:

    Meh

JPP is well known for his work ethic and motor. There are so many players skipping camp now it’s not really a concern. Let’s reserve judgement until he’s AT CAMP next week.

  11. IsrBuc Says:

@Greg i’m with you. Hope we are wrong.

  12. Darin Says:

I was one of the people freaking out when Licht didnt get Quinn. The fact he got JPP did ease that a bit. And yes Joe it will be interesting to track both players seasons. I still think Quinn would have been the better pick up, but no more freaking out. Quinn is not as good a run defender but we have plenty of run stuffing DEs. Quinn as a pass rushing DE would have been sweet. The guy had 19,5 sacks one year. Just started healing toward end of last year and got 6 sacks in last 5 games. Ive always been a big quinn fan, so guess I’m biased. But I hope JPP is better than him moving forward. The guy is making a ton of money so he better play dam good. And this team needs all of its players at every practice. Jpp being selfish missing practice isnt helping anyone out.

Lol, J0e are you trying to act like you weren’t leading the freak out???

You’re darn right Joe was freaking out. Nothing in today’s post would lead anyone to think otherwise. –Joe

Joe you were partially leading the freakout in March!

There’s at least 15 articles from March about needing a defensive end and at least 5 or 6 lamenting specifically about not getting Robert Quinn.
The archives are hear for all to read. You’re darn right Joe was freaking out! –Joe

  15. Pickgrin Says:

JPP is a much more complete player than Robert Quinn.

Quinn is a rush specialist. Has never played against the run well as evidenced by his lack of total tackles every year of his career except for the one magical season he had in 2013 when he got 19 sacks and 57 tackles.

Pierre Paul averages as many or more tackles per year over his entire career (including 2 seasons washed out by injury) than Quinn had in his one career best year.

JPP had a magical year as well. 16.5 sacks and 93 tackles

Also noteworthy is that JPP has more than 3 TIMES as many batted down passes in his career than Quinn.

Licht was absolutely correct not to pay too much in trade for Quinn and concentrate on bringing JPP into the fold.

JPP is only 1 year older and his salary is just 9% higher than Quinn – but he’s a much more productive all around DE who excels at every aspect of the position.

Also Miami only gets 2 years of Quinn’s services for what they gave the Rams – the Bucs have JPP under contract for the next 3 years.

Anyone openly wishing we had gotten Quinn instead of JPP is either not very familiar with these players – or more likely just being intentionally contrary.

  16. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

I am not expecting much at this point. Was very excited when we signed him, but when you get all that money and don’t show up to learn the new system and lead by example, that tells me all i need to know. Apparently he was just looking for another paycheck.

  17. Pickgrin Says:

“Apparently he was just looking for another paycheck.”

JPP was already under contract for the next 3 years – SMH…

  18. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

Yes, and he is just playing out his contract to keep the paychecks coming. Not sure what you didn’t understand there.

  19. Pickgrin Says:

JPP is a 29 year old veteran player coming into his 9th year in the NFL. Dude played more snaps last year than any other defensive lineman in the league.

He’s been in NY for the last 8 years. His family, house, everything is up there. He just found out (out of the blue with no chance for mental adjustment) a little over 2 months ago that he now has to uproot and move 1100 miles away. Tons of unexpected details to attend to involving that obviously.

Why would anyone complain that he’s not here every day for VOLUNTARY workouts considering all that??

If he’s not here next week when he is expected and required to be here – then the naysayers can whine… Geez

  20. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

It doesn’t show me the hunger that we all want this team and players to have. He may come and ball out but I think its defintely a red flag when a guy making that much money doesn’t show up for voluntary work outs. Yes it is voluntary, but if I read it correctly he was the only member of the team that took advantage of that fact. I hope it turns out to be nothing but it is definitely worth keeping an eye on IMO.

  21. Evolvingbucsfan Says:

Pikgrin, I think he has a good reason or at least i hope so. I have posted about him not being hear but from what i hear and his reputation is he is a stand up guy and hard worker. But he’s not the only one that has to uproot and move down and all that, Unrein, Allen, Curry, and Jensen to name a few that have had to do the same thing. I know he had a little less time to do that but not much of a difference to not be in practice

From what i guess is that his kid is hear, he might be evaluating the parenting agreement with lawers and scheduling hearings and such to get more custody or parenting time as well now that he will be closer to his kid, discussing financials when spliting custody or changing visitation percentages and all that jazz, my brother goes through that alot with his crazy ex.

  22. BucEmUp Says:

I’m telling you, our dline will never sack the qb the way Smith plays our corners off so often it’s predictable on almost every play. No changes, no adjustments just the same thing every play..Run, run, pass between the corner and safety or a slant route.

That’s why jpp isn’t here, he already knows Mike Smith is a gonner if he doesn’t learn how to coach defense very quickly

  23. Jeff Says:

Have a feeling JPP’s disfigured hand is acting up. If we see him with the club on, then this was a terrible trade. Can’t play the game one handed.
