Bucs No. 14

May 10th, 2018

Leads QB room.

Depth is critical for good teams.

And it seems the Bucs have key depth at maybe the most important position on the team. And it is not out of the question that depth will be tested this season.

Vinnie Iyer of Sporting News decided to look at every quarterback depth chart and decided with the Bucs, they have the No. 14 team in terms of quarterbacks.

14. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
QB depth chart: Jameis Winston, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Ryan Griffin, Austin Allen

Winston fought pain to produce through a season in which Fitzpatrick proved why the Bucs have one of the league’s best seasoned backups. Griffin also keeps them deep through No. 3. It will be tough for Allen, undrafted from Arkansas, to make the roster.

Fitz did just fine after the Bucs finally decided to sit America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, due to his bum shoulder.

When Jameis was healthy enough to resume duties, he played like a different quarterback — as in a top shelf quarterback, albeit with a few fumbles.

It is good to know Fitz is a decent backup. Joe fears he will get a few involuntary starts this year thanks to NFL warden Roger Goodell.

Joe hopes that is not the case.

I’m in the same boat about fitz getting some starts. I ch ope everything is good with winston, but something really seems out of the ordinary. I’m not seeing the usual winston practices or anything. Could be that I’m on the west coast and don’t have enough insight. I hope. But if everything goes wrong with him, I truly hope that the defense steps up and fitz can have a 2000 trent dilfer type of season. Please be good to go winston.

  2. Blackmagic00 Says:

@joe. Have you seen winston practicing? I saw a video on Instagram and winston was in a floppy hat motivating the guys but I only saw fitz throwing the ball. Is it because I only see what gets posted? Or is this something to worry about?

Fitz is like buying a high yield junk bond….Bring in Josh Freeman….talk about a low mileage cheap vet….not saying sign him but gezzo pezzo….let’s have a look see….

@Joe … “When Jameis was healthy enough to resume duties, he played like a different quarterback โ€” as in a top shelf quarterback, albeit with a few fumbles.”

A FEW fumbles Joe? Aah yes, Joe, the master of understatement. In those last 5 games, Jameis fumbled 6 times & lost 5 of them. (To his credit, he only threw 2 INTs). We won 1 of those 5 games … the 1 game that he didn’t fumble in BTW. In Jameis’ defense, he was sacked a whopping 17 times in those 5 games. But hey, I’ve read many times that our OLine played great, so those sacks must’ve been the defense’s fault.
Hey, Jameis had five picks in his last five games, too. Not good. Gives the ball away like it’s Halloween candy. Joe has written that many times. Still played very well over that final stretch.–Joe

  5. Joe Says:

    Have you seen winston practicing?

Nope. Technically, Bucs are not practicing (yet). All team activities thus far have been closed. That will change tomorrow when the rookies have their first minicamp practice.

Ah, underwear football is in the air.

  6. Blackmagic00 Says:

@ Joe thank you for that. Now I can’t wait for tomorrow. And I really hope everything is cool with winston. I really can’t wait for tomorrow though. This might be my most hopeful draft since…….. I can’t remember.

  7. Stanglassman Says:

Jameis was sacked 21 times in the last 5 games. Had 5 interceptions, 3 in the saints win. Week 15 & 16 Panther and Falcons he played a near perfect games. 130+ Qbr with almost 80% completion. Those are the games we got to win. They will with improvements in red zone efficiency, kicking and overall defense.

  8. Tval Says:

seems the bucs could demand the lions coach be suspended as well. he was actually indicted. doesnt mean he was guilty, but if we’re talking about the league looking bad? ZERO comparison

  9. DB55 Says:

In Jameisโ€™ defense, he was sacked a whopping 17 times in those 5 games.
    —————
    1. how many times did he get hit?
    2. How many pressures?
    3. How many drop backs with NO pressures or hits?

I think you see what I’m getting at. Worse yet I don’t see it getting any better bc NEWSFLASH Jameis is missing the entire right-side of an oline.

If we’re counting on Sweezy and Dotson OR the Div II guy I have only one thing to say:

RUN JAMEIS RUN – I hear the giants will need a new QB next yr and they have a GM that cares about protecting their QB. He drafted not only the best RB available but also Will Hernandez and signed the best tackle available too.

That’s how winners are made an QBs are protected.

    Nice!

I’m still a bit puzzled by Ryan Griffin….we’ve kept him around for 3, now going on 4 years…..even through the Glennon era…..we use a roster spot for him but yet through all of that Fitz is our primary backup.
So, what does that say about Ryan Griffin….still not ready for prime time.
I would like to see them go with 2 QBs and have one on the PS…..I don’t think Griffin is PS eligible….so, we’d have to go with another.

  12. AlteredEgo Says:

“Iโ€™m still a bit puzzled by Ryan Griffin”…analytics…last man standing….the single thing the NFL could do to insure/improve the game would be to….not count 3 QB’s against the 53….said another way 56 man roster….and owners if you are reading…keep the trajectory of QB contracts under control….hence allowing $$$$ to the other positions…

You’ve got to love the offseason. Ranking QB depth?! Let’s not stop there. What about ranking the music tastes of GMs? Best dressed players? Hottest girlfriends/wives? Ability to cook BBQ? Best floppy hat?

  14. DB55 Says:

Jameis will either make or break us this year. We’re running out of excuses.

  16. Trench War Says:

    Tbbf

You’re right Griffin is ineligible for the ps. If they don’t go with 3 QB’s then Griffin could be traded or enter free agency. What a waste of time served with no shot. Maybe another team will swipe him up if they lose a QB during TC and preseason.

  17. Pickgrin Says:

14 is obviously too low if they are saying that Fitz is one of the best back ups and Griffin is one of the better #3s….
