Stamp Of Approval

April 27th, 2018

Thumbs up.

One famous ex-Bucs player is geeked.

Former Bucs guard and current Tampa Bay radio voice Ian Beckles is one fired up dude. While many Bucs fans are bemoaning the pick of defensive tackle Vita Vea at No. 12 last night, Beckles is ready to start pouring shots of Hennessy.

In fact, Beckles believes the Bucs, overnight, became watchable again.

@ian_beckles: Big Ups to @jasonrlicht for making our @Buccaneers bigger and meaner on day one of the @NFL draft by drafting @VitaVea !!!!This Kid can play. Our Defense is gonna have a completely different look this year.I’m starting to get excited again.#Dignitarylife

Now the Bucs need to go get a running back, a defensive end and a guard. Plenty of those players still on the board.

With three picks in the second round, tonight’s Day 2 coverage of the draft should be fun.

    CB,CB,CB and maybe S

  2. Turn Off the Licht Says:

Defensive End? I hope you mean defensive back.

  3. MadMax Says:

Nice stamp of approval! Now to get:

    Big Will/Connor Williams
    Chubb/Guice/Jones II
    Turay/Bates/Griffin

  4. Joe Says:

Defensive End? I hope you mean defensive back.

Joe meant exactly what he typed: defensive end.

  5. Bird Says:

Give it up joe. Please. It’s not funny.

The other joe needs to knock some sense into you.

Yah. When grimes goes down , and Hargreaves and Ryan smith are on opposite sides then everyone will get blamed except Jameis.

Please let the other joe do articles for a while.

  6. Trevor in Orlando Says:

I don’t think we see a DE drafted tonight, and probably not at all this draft, unless the team sees massive value; like having a 2nd round grade on someone still available in round 6.

  7. teacherman777 Says:

    BPA

    Don’t reach.

Arden Key in the late 2nd and a SS.

    First pick?

    I’m hoping for Harold Landry.

I say get another true pass rusher!!

  8. Bird Says:

    Negative Nancy joe

It’s just not necessary. Fans are excited about 3 2nd rounders and you say that hot garbage. Shame shame shame.

  9. Dewey Selmon Says:

Famous? Ian Beckles is not famous. lol

  10. Pa Privateer Says:

Lots of good value DEs left in the draft

Lots of big quality CBs left in the draft

Lots of Productive RBs left in the draft

Lots of contributing OL left in the draft

Lots of FS/SS left in the draft

It is going to be a very rewarding second day of the 2018 draft.

Litch is going to stick with his board with OG, RB, CB, and FS and see what falls.

  11. MadMax Says:

Question? If Big Will AND Connor Williams are both there, who should we take?

We have Dotsons recent news of an injury, but it sure would be nice to see Marpet back at RG and release Sweezy due to bloated pay and injuries….We signed our C already…jit i dont know man.

Its almost coin flip! But big Will probably goes early.

  12. Pickgrin Says:

Yea – because we don’t need a CB at all… SMH

I’m not opposed to a DE if the right player falls to the right spot (on Jason’s board) – but its a weak DE class this year and a strong class for CB and RB. Both of which are bigger needs than DE – with more “good” prospects to choose from.

Next year’s crop of DEs will be much better than this year’s. We’ve already bolstered our line with Vea – and should hold off on DE (unless one Licht loves falls to the right spot) early in the draft here and concentrate on other more pressing needs from positions of greater strength in this draft.

    CB, RB, SS, OG

  13. Greg Says:

Let’s not get overdramatic about defense of backs. Not a lot of great ones left in this draft and I think ours are a lot better if we have a pass rush which we have not had in over 10 years. I still believe in Vernon Hargraves I watched him in college the guy was a ball hog if the quarterback has to get rid of the ball with in five seconds like a normal defense would make happen. Just an evidence was a rookie last year who has a lot of upside as well. I’m hoping for Nick Chubb or Hernandez the offense of guard

  14. Joe Says:

Give it up joe. Please. It’s not funny.

    Not joking. Whatsoever.

  15. Joe Says:

It’s just not necessary. Fans are excited about 3 2nd rounders and you say that hot garbage.

    wwwhhhaaa???

Joe’s geeked about three second round picks. Guess you haven’t been reading the articles last night and this mornining or monitored Joe’s Twitter feed.

  16. Greg Says:

I would not mind a young defensive end but as soon as we draft one Joe will turn around and complain about not having a running back or corner

  17. Buchead407 Says:

CB RB OR Gaurd Gotta have a complete team Only 4 on the dline at once and we are pretty deep now as it is. Hopefully Noah Spence can step up behind curry and jpp

  18. The Graham Tram Says:

    CB, RB, OT/S/DE

Just because we wanted Nelson, doesn’t mean we need a Guard. I think Joe was planning on playing corner this year

  19. Crazed Bucs Fan Says:

Vea will move mountains. Strong like crazed bull.

  20. Eric Says:

Beckles knows line play, so good to hear that from him. Also not prone to sugar coat anything.

Its funny but folks always say “take BPA”, then they cry “but we needed x”.

This kid we drafted is easy to pull for, given where he came from – family living in hotel room and all. A great story really.

Give it three years and we will know if it was a good pick.

  21. Buc50 Says:

If Guice or Chubb can be had, we better not pass on them. I know we need CB but we need RB just as bad.

  22. Bradentonbuc Says:

So stoked to get Vita Vea where we got him AND pick up 2 extra 2nd rounders, I would take it all day. You cannot have enough depth at the d-line and frankly, McCoy will probably get hurt at some point in the season. So not a bad pick at all

  23. Tony from Los Angeles Says:

    Agree 100%, Joe.

    Keep. Building. The. Trenches.
Control the lines and you control the game.

DB’s look a hell of a lot better when they have a relentless pass rush in front of them.
    Love the pick of Vita.

But – as I’ve said for MONTHS – they still need another interior offensive lineman and another young DE to throw into the rotation.

    One more time…

FIX THE TRENCHES, FIX THE BUCS!!!

  24. BuccaneEric75 Says:

As much as I want Guice/Hernandez/Jackson, I wouldn’t be mad with Landry at 38. This offseason has finally been about the inept DL. Wouldn’t be mad if they kept it going in round 2, Even if it means they have to cut Gholston.

  25. Lamarcus Says:

    No Joe is right guys

We need that DE before anything…….. Like before Vita

  26. Tony from Los Angeles Says:

I wish a lot of you above would stop the RB whining. It’s ridiculous.
Build the damn offensive line for the long haul and then snag any of the 8 good RBs still on the free agent street after the draft.

Build an open lane highway and you can make any car drive fast.
Put a sports car on a congested interstate – it gets stuck in traffic just like everyone else.

Grab another interior offensive lineman in round 2 and a swing tackle late for depth
Grab a young DE to throw into the rotation.
Finish the most important position groups rebuild.

FIX THE TRENCHES, FIX THE BUCS!!

  27. Tony from Los Angeles Says:

What people do not seem to be realizing is that the #1 way to improve your defensive backs is with a pass rush.

The Bucs had the worse pass rush in the league last year. QBs had clean pockets, could set their feet and take the time necessary to wait for a man to break open.

The Bucs KNOW this. They know if they can cut 1/2 a second off the amount of time their current DB’s have to hold coverage, they will see dramatic improvement with the same players.

Sticking rookie DBs in the secondary and asking them to hold coverage for 4-5 seconds would produce similarly disastrous results as last year. BUT -go all out in the assault of the QB with a pass rush – and you make the secondary infinitely better by proxy.

It’s the exact same argument with RBs. Build the O-line first and then ANY RB can get results.

This is the smart way to build. Get on board, folks. Doing business as usual (drafting for need) as it had been done for the past decade is insanity

FIX THE TRENCHES, FIX THE BUCS!!!!!

  28. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Joe…..do you like this plan?……pick up Hernandez, cut Sweezy….us his money to bring in a 30 year old CB that is fully developed?

  29. Pryda ...sec147 Says:

VH3 is coming back a pass rush is gonna get his swagger back believe that

  30. Bucnjim Says:

Fans tend to forget why our D was so good back in the day. It was our ability to stop the run and make other teams one dimensional. Way easier to get pressure when you know the other team is passing.

  31. mark2001 Says:

I have to wonder if Jason might trade back on the first second round pick a half dozen spaces, especially if Hernandez is gone, pick up a third in addition to the slightly lower first second? Then we could meet all our needs with our draft through round four this year. And all those picks, or the lions share, should develop into very good players.

  32. BlogTalkFootball Says:

Some VERY GOOD Defensive Backs are on the market right now that would not need coaching up, and the starting salary is dropping with every corner and safety drafted in the 2nd and 3rd rounds. Look at Tre Boston, Eric Reid, DMC, Pacman Jones and a whole host of DBs that we could make a 1 year offer to after the draft or even during the draft.

And Seattle is looking for a 2nd rounder for Earl Thomas, too. If they don’t get any takers, maybe Licht could offer them some day 3 picks for him.

  33. Bucnjim Says:

There is no defensive back that can cover long enough while the opposing QB can drink a cup of coffee before having to get rid of the ball.

  34. BucswinBucswin Says:

DE ?? Proves what everyone knows ., Joes don’t know hack about football . We need a CB, RB , and OL depth., that’s it. No DE’s needed . We have plenty including depth…

  35. mark2001 Says:

So BW….why are we to believe you know hack about football? I prefer the RB, OL , and CB…but that doesn’t mean it is the best course of action…depends on a number of things.

  36. StPeteBucsFan Says:

Someone said package some later round 5-6-7 choices to move up for the players we want in the second.

Simply stated…we need three starting players from the 2nd round.

RB- Guice or Chubb..whomever is higher on lichts board.

CB – A guy who can line up opposite Grimes from day one.

OG – Hernandez or another guy capable of starting from day one.

  37. MadMax Says:

@Pryda, i know…he better be putting in the work tho, and doing the right things off field, keeping his mind and body right.

  38. 813bucboi Says:

    joe

    I agree……OL/DE/RB

    guice
    conner Williams
arden key…kwon, winston and beckwith will keep him str8…….

folks don’t understand…..the front 7 will make the entire secondary better!!!!!….continue to build up front!!!!!!

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!!

  39. John meeks Says:

Bucswinbucswin, agree with you on our needs but you can never have enough pass rushers.i do feel we need to fix the back end of our defense now.two defensive backs would be nice.also some good safetys out there to!can’t wait for tonight!

  40. Waterboy Says:

I almost agree Joe but I’d grab Harold Landry/ RB/ CB. Guard can wait until the 4th.

  41. passthebuc Says:

@joe. yes another DE. However first need an OG. Its the trenches that count first and foremost. You added to the D line now complete the deal and get Hernandez.

  42. hoover923 Says:

Naturally, CB was left off Joe’s list of needs. This one must’ve been written by THAT Joe, the one who blows a fuse at the thought of a rookie corner being coached by Jon Hoke and Brett Maxie. Sorry Joe, we need CB desperately. We also need SS. DE would be nice… but today’s haul has to include CB and RB.

  43. SOEbuc Says:

DE over CB or S Joe? Riiiiiiiiiight (Dr. Evil). Put down the bottle of Hennessy (gross), Joe.
