Bills GM Spells Out Trade Shuffle With Bucs

April 27th, 2018

Luck and a lack of greed set up Bucs GM Jason Licht

Brandon Beane was talking this afternoon on the channel in Joe’s ear 18 hours a day: SiriusXM NFL Radio.

The Bills’ general manager was spelling out last night’s angling to trade with Tampa Bay.

Here are the need-to-know nuggets:

*Beane said he pretty much had a done deal in place with Denver until DE Bradley Chubb fell in their lap and they backed up.

*Beane said the Colts had zero interest in trading through the pre-draft process. Quenton Nelson was there man all the way, he said.

*Beane had other trade opportunities to move up for a QB — Buffalo drafted Josh Allen — but a lot of teams were looking to raid Buffalo and there was a lot of chatter for a first-round pick next year. Beane said the Bills were never going to deal a 2019 pick. He added Buffalo gave up a lot to Tampa Bay, two second-rounders and No. 12 overall, but it was within their plan.

Like the majority of fans, Joe loved the dealing for extra picks. It will pay off today big time.

For those who know the Bucs need a cornerback in the worst way, NFL Radio host Pat Kirwan said today there are 10 corners with second- or third-round grades still on the board.

    Licht isn’t perfect but he’s done some things that are impressive! Now let’s hit it out of the park.

  2. Bird Says:

    May be hard to pass on will Hernandez if available. I still think Giants take him before us. Gentleman knows how to draft and wants to protect Eli and saquon.

    If he is gone. Go running back and corner with next 2. In either order.

  3. Papa578 Says:

    We’re are in excellent shape for tonight. Good job Mr. Licht. Now, go get our running back, secondary and o-line shored up. Winners come thru when the pressure is on.

  4. Lord Cornelius Says:

    Per the trade value chart we destroyed this deal. Difference in our pick values was like 300 points and we got 710 points via the 2 2nds.

    Meanwhile Gruden got 225 points in value for the 3rd / 5th round picks they aquired to move back 5 spots; and the difference in value was 250 points.

  5. MadMax Says:

    It was beautiful…..worked out like I wanted. Somewhere in the search feature many times, “trade back to 11 or 12 and get Big V”

    Now we need Big Will for LG or Connor Williams for RT, then Guice (he’ll be there)

  6. SOEbuc Says:

    And Josh Jackson is still on the board. If we wanted a CB with the first second round pick, that’d be sweet if he fell to us.

  7. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    I’m sort of thinking we go G if Hernandez is there…..he will make the RB we choose later…better. Then RB then CB or S.

    This will be an interesting evening….Licht may trade up to get his players….we have a 4th 5th and 2 6ths……

  8. OneBucPerson Says:

    Josh Jackson, Derrius Guice/Nick Chubb, and Braden Smith. Let’s get it!

  9. USFBUC Says:

    Licht also has enough late round draft capital to move from the fourth round back into the bottom of the third round too, we could wind up with 5 picks in the first three rounds. That late round value could be used to move up in the second to get the guys we want there too.

  10. BlogTalkFootball Says:

    Kirwin also said there are some pretty decent corners in free agency that are seeing their paycheck get smaller by the pick… so Licht could already be negotiating for one or two veteran CB’s (or even a safety) at a very reduced price, so we can continue drafting players that make us nasty in the trenches.

  11. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

    Top class trade by Licht. Hopefully Josh Jackson is there at pick 6 and then get a RB and OL/S with the other 2 picks.

    I also wouldn’t mind trading back in the 2nd if we could get a 3rd out of it. 3 2nds and a 3rd would go a long way to right this ship.

  12. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

    Lord, they got such good value because they were trying to move up to take a “franchise” QB. Typically there is a premium but they did get outstanding value. I couldn’t quite believe it when I saw it on TV and immediately pulled out my phone to confirm it. They need to get Chubb, best available CB, and then best available G with the third pick. I also think it might be worth giving up the 5th, 6th and 7th picks to move up early in the round tonight if they really want Will Hernandez or one of the RBs. Sorry, but I don’t think those late round picks are very valuable if you can move up and get 1st round talent in a position of need tonight.

  13. passthebuc Says:

    do not trade both of the 2nd round picks to move up

  14. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    We’ll never know but what would Licht have done if Nelson was there at 7 and Buffalo still wanted to do the trade?

    I’m torn but I think I like the extra picks….you can go buy a good player but you can’t buy draft picks…..

  15. 813bucboi Says:

    guice
    conner Williams
    arden key

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!!

  16. Jason Mclaurin Says:

    I seen that trade coming the whole way because the big three teams were unwilling to make a move and the Bills, imo, didn’t want to give them assets either especially Denver and Cleveland. We we’re the perfect team for that deal the whole time I just wish we could have gotten their other first. I’m confident they tried to get it too btw. I don’t like the censorship going on the media sites but I like that the articles have described how a majority of our fan base feels right now though. I was wondering the whole time though we’re they actually going into the season believing in Beau Allen and Unrein as a rotation. Vea stamps and I honestly think we as fans may regret not wanting this guy too myself included. To be on the level of Philly though we need to be looking for another DE in the draft tonight as well as RB. My night would be great if we take J. Bates, K. Johnson, and another edge rusher tonight.

  17. Rod Munch Says:

    Chris Conte.
    Ryan Smith.

    THE worst two starters at their position in the NFL, and in the case of Smith THE worst player at his position, period. Conte isn’t the worst player at his position, I don’t think anyways, I mean there has to be someone worse sitting deep on a depth chart somewhere, but he is by far the worst starting safety in the NFL.

    Anywho those two guys still have jobs, and until that changes this offseason has been a complete and total failure.

    Hopefully Licht hits some homeruns in the 2nd because he’s put the team in a position of having to get starters at corner and safety in the 2nd round. While Evans had an OK rookie year it’s pretty rare for rookie safeties to come in and play early and to play well. At corner it’s a bit easier to find a starting corner in the 2nd round, but again rookie corners, in particular those not taken in the 1st round, rarely come in and start 16 games and are productive.

    FA could come into play post draft but the Bucs would have to create some money to get anything done – which isn’t out of the question, but also isn’t a given.

  18. John Says:

    Licht is the best GM this team has had since Rich McCay.. He is the first one since to STOCK the shelf.. Get some depth in here.

  19. mark2001 Says:

    Rod…don’t know how bad those guys really are…without a pass rush worth squat, and the talent of the average NFL QB especially when given time, it is hard to tell how badly they really are.

  20. Stanglassman Says:

    CB, RB and S are big needs going into tonight but G and DE are positions that could not only be improved but could allow the Bucs to free up cap space to fill out the roster. Gholston and Sweezy’s contracts are bloated for their production or lack there of it. Bucs could bring in Breeland and CJ if they had the cap space. I’m not suggesting to pass on Josh Johnson and Guice if they fall to them the 1st, 2nd but if Hernandez is there too it’s something to consider.

  21. Batman Wood Says:

    For all the deserved criticism, the way he played the Vinny Curry situation, pulled off the JPP trade and now this piece of impressive GM’ing supported by the opposing GM, Licht has pretty much made up for his mistakes and learned from them.

  22. thunderchunkyPA Says:

    Could he trade down again and gain a 3rd? Possible, there are some desperate teams. You have some good talent where they sit at pick 6 in round 2. Browns and Colts run the 2nd round, they could trade down and teams could jump up for Chubb, Guice, or any others at this point.

  23. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

    3 – 2nd round picks can easily get us 3 new starters, at positions of need, as long as Licht does not give them up, to move up.
    Buffalo gave all us Buc Fans a big gift, all because of their obsession with getting a franchise QB. But, they are happy, we are happy, looks like it was a great deal for all involved.

  24. Batman Wood Says:

    We can thank Cleveland for not taking Chubb.

  25. BigBucFan11 Says:

    The more I think about it, the more I want Ronnie Harrison with one of our picks tonight. I wish we had a third rounder too still, but I’ll take JPP for that for sure. There’s just so much talent sitting there in these two rounds tonight. Probably the most I’ve ever seen for rounds 2-3.

  26. Anthony Says:

    But in another thread Joe said grab in no specific order go running back, defensive end and guard…… NO WAY. Grab defensive end late and get a Corner!!!!!! No way we can go into the season with Vernon and Ryan Smith as our 2 and 3.

  27. BigBucFan11 Says:

    Bleacher report mocked a tight end to us at 56?????? WTH? They say “the Bucs get their tight end of the future to develop”…… Howard???

  28. DaveinFortMyers Says:

    Love the Trade and Absolutely love The Pick! Welcome to Tampa Mr. Vea! Now get some beef for the O-line too with Hernandez! I wanted this to happen all along, Awesome Job!

  29. Kobe Faker Says:

    Getting 4 starters = A+ draft

    Going to be difficult. Starting quality players going to run out before middle of the draft

    **hate to lay it on the sheep and their idol worship to forrest gump but

    John elway probably had a better deal than what licht got us. Elway would not have given #5 without buffalo 2 1st round picks and their best 2nd rounder…MINIMUM

    Bean is happy as hell because he paid less to tampa bay than denver….thats why buffalo jumped up for their 2nd pick because it was free rolling

    Kobe the Parrot

  30. Kobe Faker Says:

    *run out middle of the 3rd round

  31. Batman Wood Says:

    @Kobe Faker
    Why would the Bucs get the same deal at 7 that the Broncos would get at 5? Obviously Buffalo had mutliple trade offers to move up. Licht won. Give him some credit.

  32. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    We may be safe at 6 in the second…..Just heard Rappaport saying rumors of teams wanting to trade up for DEs, C, OT…..no rumors of RB interest early in the round….but that could be smoke.

    I don’t want to trade down again for more picks….I’d rather give up 6ths for higher picks…..we need a few really good players, not a bunch of projects.

  33. Jarhead Says:

    BigBucFan11,

    I saw that too. Shows how much they know about our Bucs huh!!! Lol

  34. Kobe Faker Says:

    Last year gump had a great draft

    This year, he has a opportunity to do even better with the 2 xtra 2s. We shall see….

    Kobe believes in grading the whole draft. The 3rd round can be better than the 2nd round just like what occurred ast year.

    *licht is not the problem… Kluless koetters coaching and scheme is holding this team/JW back

  35. Jarhead Says:

    Licht has done so well this offseason. He has possibly given this team an identity, one we are familiar with. Strong defense!! But what’s crazy is the offense could be even better. This has potential to be a very strong team and a very exciting season.

    One more thing, looks like Jason Licht is Building some good relationships with other GMs around the league. This is critical to continued success at being able to wheel and deal. Go Bucs

  36. MadMax Says:

    STFU already mayock!!! Hating on Guice so much on nfl network at 6:34pm!!! FU!

    Kids been through enough already….makes me want him more.

  37. mark2001 Says:

    Kobe…. agree…Koetter doesn’t seem to have the nature to both discipline and inspire.

  38. passthebuc Says:

    There is nothing wrong with trading down as long as it will not alter your draft board. If someone is willing to give you a 4th to move up a few spots and the teams that are jumped have no interest in your player pick, its ok. What is not ok is trade down and not know who will be picked off the board before you get therre. Remember that 4th becomes trade bait if you need to move up a few spots later in this round.

  39. Dave Pear Says:

    licht is not the problem
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Kobe,
    Then why do you continue to call him Forest Gump?
    I liked it better when your fake son and fake girlfriend posted.
  40. Tampabaybucfan Says:
    @MAX
    I heard that…..glad he’s doing it….maybe he will drop to us….I don’t think we will fall for the BS….too much talent.
  41. Kobe Faker Says:
    Agreed.
    Koetter is insecure and overwhelmed
    We need john defilippo as HC. Hungry young and innovative
    **More tha ever, i see age difference effecting these millenial players of now to old school coaches
  42. Tampabaybucfan Says:
    I wouldn’t mind trading down if we have multiple players on our board that are likely to fall to us….depends on how far the trade down is and if we are drafting for BPA or need…..
    There are many RBs & CBs available….but only a couple of Gs……& Safeties…….
    We will see……
    Licht loves to trade so buckle up…
  43. Dave Pear Says:
    Kobe,
    You really should not even be here.
    You Promised to leave if we beat Kansas City.
    Don’t make the realist do a famous re-post.
  44. Rod Munch Says:
    Is this our live thread for tonight?
  45. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:
    Starts in 2 minutes. Where’s our thread???
  46. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:
    We need a day 2 thread…..
    Speaking for Pablo
    “Pablo desperately wants Will Hernandez…..but Pablo is fearful the Giants will pick him and crush Pablo’s dreams.”
  48. Rod Munch Says:
    What happened to Arden Key’s stock? The guy was being talked about as the best pure edge rusher in the draft back in December? I’m not a big college guy so I don’t know why he fell off the face of the earth.
  49. Rod Munch Says:
    Joe just opened a draft thread for tonight if you didn’t notice.
  50. Oneilbucs Says:
    Let’s go baby go Bucs!!!!!!!!!!
  51. Oneilbucs Says:
    We need to move up for a running back.
  52. Oneilbucs Says:
    Guice
  53. Mord Says:
    Apparently not so Guice
  54. Mike Johnson Says:
    Chubb went at 5. Where we should have been, Had we only dropped our pride and tanked against the saints. The season was already a wash. Chubbs gonna be better than Aaron Donald. Mark my words. And he could have been ours. Straight up BEAST!! But..its a BucLife and we did get a good DT named Vea.
