Licht Plan: Hit The Needs, Then Load Up

April 27th, 2018

“Now you see the plan, Glazer. You like that?”

Joe wrote yesterday that now was the time for general manager Jason Licht to attack the Buccaneers’ deepest needs after securing half-man, half-beast Vita Vea in Round 1 after trading down with the Bills.

Licht did just that with his trade-down booty.

He pounced on Southern Cal running back Ronald Jones, II. He jumped on interception-challenged North Carolina cornerback M.J. Stewart.

And then Licht played the game. He traded down his final second-round pick in Round 2 and picked up a fourth-rounder from the Belicheats and the Patriots’ second-rounder.

Now the Bucs have two fourth-rounders and all the ammo they need to get back into Round 3, where they previously had no pick thanks to the March trade for stud defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul.

Licht looks like a seasoned pro with the way he’s handled this offseason. Patient and precise.

Of course, that assumes these guys can play and don’t succumb to the classic bust percentages of first- and second-rounders.

Regardless, Licht has made a lot of Bucs fans proud — even if it is just April.

“interception-challenged North Carolina cornerback M.J. Stewart.”

is this your way of protesting the pick Joe?

  3. Buc50 Says:

I hope everyone is satisfied that we DIDN’T select Guice because I sure am. If the rumors are true, he’s a dummy

  4. Dewey Selmon Says:

Why trade up when you drafting the wrong players. This will go down as the worst draft under our GM.

  5. Ndog Says:

Well Dewey we havent traded up yet so it is clear you have no idea what you are talking about.

  6. JimmyJack Says:

We have gotten ourselves a nice little haul so far. Our defense now has so many better chances then they did last year.

Looks like Jones has the moves to break off a few big ones for us too.

We are looking nic3 on paper right now.

  7. Baker Mayfield Says:

if its worse than 2016, We’ll hang em from the yardarm !

  8. Clw JB Says:

Kind of reached for Both CB but we need bodies – need a G and I am a happy camper – top two picks are rock solid starters

  9. Jason Mclaurin Says:

I’m loving the Jones and Davis picks tonight. They were exactly what we needed. They took a chance on Stewart but he’s playing safety and nickel not on the outside. I hate we missed out on Hill from Sam Houston St but maybe we get two offensive lineman in the fourth. That would fill all the needs and allow us to find some gems later on Saturday unless we go ahead and get in the third twice and lose all those parrot picks. Great bounce back night and we got a DB from our home state Carlton Davis as well.

Hey Ndog, i was going on what what posted in the article. read much?

Dewey is right wrong players getting drafted those 2 corners there was better players this then you trade away a 2nd thats even worse than draftin the kicker outwide-o this is why we dont win dirtnap after dirtnap and losing games and etc.

  12. Dewey Selmon Says:

Reid as a SS and Oliver/ Donte Jackson as CB. I think Licht out smarted himself.

  13. DB55 Says:

Just a quick question why not pick Jesse Bates and Isiah Oliver with the 2 late round 2nd round picks? Or Guice? What am I missing?

  14. Dave Says:

    Bucs picking again right now!!

    Agreed!

I love what Jason Licht has done this draft. We started the draft with only TWO picks in the first three rounds and ended up with FIVE players. Six if you count JPP. Not only that, but picks that addresses need positions in some cases and BPA in others (Vea).
Now all the couch GMs need to calm down and give these need BUCS a chance. I read lots of comments last year after the Justin Evans pick and how he was just a hitter, bad tackler, etc. Little of that showed up last year and he turned out to be one the bright spots in our otherwise poor secondary. The draft is a crapshoot but let’s hope for the best. A little optimism people. We sound almost like Philly fans who booed the Donovan McNabb pick because couch GMs wanted Akili Smith.
