The Joys Of Picking At No. 7

April 11th, 2018

Happy with current perch.

One would think if the Bucs stay at No. 7, Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht should be able to find a game-changing player.

Bucs coach Dirk Koetter always talks about “game-wreckers” and with all the quarterbacks expected to be selected ahead of the Bucs later this month, one would think the Bucs should find a game-wrecker.

“Well, yeah, it means a positional player or two or three will, that you like, will potentially, could be sitting there for you,” Licht said. “We are not ruling out moving up. We are not ruling out moving back. I feel confident that if we are picking where we are that we will pick a good football player.”

But who could that player be? Joe trusts it’s not a cornerback at No. 7. Joe hopes it’s not a safety — really, a safety at No. 7?

A running back? Yes, please. A defensive end? Sure, of course. A guard? Joe wouldn’t but also wouldn’t lose sleep over it — though through the hundreds (thousands?) of football games Joe has watched, he’s yet to see a guard change a game.

Watching this current defensive staff ruin yet another rookie corner, especially one drafted with an incredibly valuable No. 7 pick, just might send Joe into a deep, dark depression.

No to a stud safety but yes please to a running back in the first when its an extremely deep class? Makes no sense

  2. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Stop with the “can’t develop a young CB”…….I guess we will hear this until it’s absolutely proven differently….and if we don’t draft a CB….we may never escape this theory.

How about a poll on that?

Do you believe that Buc coaching is responsible for poor CB play/development?

Obviously, Jason doesn’t agree…..or he would have a FA CB on board now. I think he realizes that there likely be the best CB & best Safety available to him at #7.

  3. Anthony Liga Says:

    Joe,
Stop already with can’t develop a corner or safety, and yes those 2 positions ARE game changing spots. Let’s just see what happens and then let Licht’s wisdom and experience take over. I’m happy with that.

  4. Buccaneer scotty Says:

I have seen bad guards change plenty of games I’ve seen good guards make holes for running backs to make big plays without a good o-line the quarterbacks not good the running backs aren’t good in the wide receivers don’t have time to run the route so I don’t know what you’re talking about a guard can change a game

  5. Casual Observer Says:

Joe- There have been hundreds of opinions expressed on your site about draft strategy. Most of these opinions are well thought out – and even changed my mind. It seems clear that the needs, in order, are CB, RB, S, G. My 2 cents worth now:

    1. Agree with you to trade down a few spots – to recoup the no. 3.
    2. I would drat that G, Hernandez with no.1.
    3. A very good RB will be there in the 2nd. round. I like Chubb, but others fine.
    4. The best CB available in round 3.
    5. Possibly RB Hines in round 4. To replace Sims. Plus handle some KOs.
The rest of the draft – BPA. To try to fill the other holes. If the DB(s) drafted have a poor camp, consider trades and/or watch for salary dumps.
    6. One player which has not (I believe) been mentioned here is Jordan Mailata, the 20 year-old Samoan Rugby player in Australia. He is 6′ 8″, 346 lbs. and runs a 5.2 40. At least five teams have worked him out. But not the Bucs. I suggest that he would be a project, worth a late round pick. I know that most projects fail, but so do most late round picks. He would be intriguing.

    MUSIC…to THIS Bucs fan’s ears!!!!

    Licht says:

“We are not ruling out moving up.” Buc faithful, Buc faithful, oh how sweet those words are! Just like THIS Bucs fan has adamantly been strongly suggesting almost every day here on JBF for a while now (in spite of several of the pointless noisy punks on here)….all the 2018-2020 BARKLEY-grabbing fruit is still intact (except 3rd rounder for 2018)!!

Jason, Jason, Jason….please bring the BARKLEY BAD-A$$ home to Tampa Bay, and we (including THIS Bucs fan) will celebrate you in the streets!!!

Go Bucs! Go Bold! Go Barkley! Go Primetime!

  7. Rick Says:

“Haven’t seen a guard change a game” Oline play even when stellar can be not as noticable as a QB, WR, RB making SPLASH plays. But I’ll put the last cent that I have now or will ever have that a guard who consistently opens up holes for the RB and anchors the middle of the interior to protect his QB IS CHANGING THE OUTCOME OF THE GAME!!

  8. Reality_43 Says:

I feel like we just read this exact same post a couple days ago. Some of the language was definitely copy and pasted. Denzel Ward WILL NOT need to be developed. The Titans just hired the CBs coach from Ohio St because of the ridiculous amount of 1st and 2nd rounders they have dished out over the past 3 years.

This guy is already developed and if they pick him at 7, I will not be worried in the least.

Now I would rather have Barkley if he falls and then take Wynn from Georgia in the 2nd round or Nelson then Michele.

But if Nelson is gone, I bet there is a 70% chance we pull the trigger on Ward.

  9. DoSomething Says:

If one of the big 3 non-qbs aren’t available, please please please trade down

  10. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

All the Mocks I have seen recently, have us going either Safety or Defensive Back in the draft with our first pick.

  11. Zach Says:

I don’t get the young corner back take you have. This staff has 3 young corners that Joe constantly points to: a first rounder, a fourth rounder, and an undrafted player. I get that VH3 didn’t develop like we expect but 4th-UDFA are thought of a backup role players which those guys are. If they were great the would have went high. By your logic I don’t see any RB or DE that this staff has developed so why should we bother drafting those positions either?

  12. R.O. Says:

Not sure why you consistently keep listing positions to pick at #7 when we know for a fact it’s unlikely the top 3 Players will be there at 7. After Chubb what DE are we taking at 7. After Barkley what RB are we taking at 7. If the Highest rated player left is Vea, James or Ward you choose and take one if a trade down opportunity is not presented.

  13. Fire the Glazers Says:

No point in guessing. Licht will probably trade back into the first to get a LB.
based on what most people say on here, ‘just get the best player available.’
Yeah, right. Because the Bucs have been stock piling the diamonds in the rough in past drafts, now that we have a draft class full of RBs and Defensive Line, and LBs, we have pigeon holed ourselves.
We took care of DLine in Free agency, and have had solid LB draft picks, now that we have glaring holes, we might as well be playing black jack with the only pair of transparent cards in the deck.
We need RBs and CBs. No secret. With our 7 picks we may as well just invest 4 of those picks in both spots, two on each, and bring in a ton of undrafted competition to weed out the pretenders.

  14. Pickgrin Says:

If we stay at #7 – of course we will get a good football player. The beauty of it is that no matter which “good” football player falls to us at #7 – it will be at a position of relative if not serious “need”.

RB (Barkley), OG (Nelson), DE (Chubb), Safety (James)

Bet you that is the exact order of the 1st 4 players sitting atop the Buccaneers Big Board. 1 of those 4 players WILL be a Buccaneer in 15 days unless Licht gets an attractive trade down offer which seems more likely than usual this year and may well be the best thing to do for this team which still has multiple “needs”. (Thanks Dom!)

Some may not like the idea of drafting a Guard or Safety with a top 10 pick – but when you look at the level of talent and quality of player (also quality of character) that both Nelson and James represent – you have to feel good about adding either of those guys to our team.

Who here would raise their hand and say – “No I don’t want the next Zach Martin” – or “No I don’t want the next Eric Berry”?

That’s the level of talent that Nelson and James represent. Probably the 2 “safest” picks in the entire draft right there IMO (and Jason’s as well I betcha).

  15. Destinjohnny Says:

We still need a couple more drafts to be any good.
If the saints beat us and we had the 5 pick and could trade out
    That was our story.

  16. The Buc Realist Says:

Its funny to see Joe be patient with the offense going into its 4th year while wanting another round of multiple high picks to help develop, But Joe goes into a deep dark depression with the thought of giving the lack luster talent of the defense help in the draft!!!!!!!!!!

The favoritism for certain players if beyond obvious!!!!!! Continue on with the agenda joe!!!!!!!

    Go Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!

  17. RustyRhinos Says:

DestinJohnney, why don’t we just lose to the Saints and Falcons, and Panthers every game? We will be much higher on the draft board.
It takes Pride and a will of not going into the offseason with another loss within our Division. I am very glad we won that game. Would you rather have a team that rolls over and gets rolled over without any fight? I for one do not, will not ever accept losing to improve my draft slot.

  18. martinni Says:

I disagree in your critique of Guard. A guy that will add size, attitude, and consistency for 7 to 10 years to the middle of your O-Line while paving the way for any mediocre RB and protects the most valuable asset on your offense, QB, is well worth a 7th RD pick. More often than not those specialty players that we all worship achieve their awards on the backs of the horses up front. If Nelson there at 7 take him and consider your draft a huge success.

  19. Broy34 Says:

Omg can we stop with the corner thing. It’s putting me off when it comes to the site. I’ve already gone out of my way to ignore cornerback posts but can you put a warning on this. Ira doesn’t even wanna hear it anymore. Love the site but that take good lord is bad

  20. pelbuc Says:

It’s been what 9 years and I have yet to see GMC change a game. Bucs need another Hardy Nickerson personality on this team. At least some nastiness on the field which Nelson or Hernandez can bring. Sweezy is a bust!

  21. Jolly Bucs Fan Says:

No CB worth the 7th pick. However I am fine with a late 1st or a 2nd rd pick on CB. and yes, I disagree with Joe about developing a CB.

  22. Lord Cornelius Says:

” it means a positional player or two or three will, that you like, will potentially, could be sitting there for you,”

Interesting he said 1/2 or 3 will potentially be there – and there’s a consensus elite 3 in terms of blue chip prospects.

Definitely a great spot to sit in with the QB demand this year. If the big 3 are gone then Rosen/Mayfield or Allen are sitting there at 7 for a trade back

  23. William Rose Says:

Bad teams overdraft players at positions of need (e. g. Davenport @ #7) rather than stockpiling the best talent available regardless of position like good teams do. Fitz, James & Nelson are considered to be top 5 talents in this draft who can’t miss. They even play positions of need, which is another plus. You won’t get top notch talent like that by trading down. In fact, most analysts say there are only around fifteen players who even have a 1st round grade. I’d rather have an Eric Berry type player than a player graded in the bottom half of the first round or a second round grade. That’s how you get better, not by settling for leftovers. It’s too bad that Joe doesn’t like that, but then again, Joe had the hots to draft “Johnny Football.”

  25. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    Doctor Berto

Let’s see if I can help make sense. Barkley is the best RB prospect in years! Yeah there are other serviceable backs, some will have nice pro careers and would suffice but deep average to above average simply doesn’t compare to getting the best prospect in a long…long…long time. If Barkley is there we MUST take him.

At the NFL Scouting Combine, Barkley was out of this world with a 40 time that was amazing at his size. Barkley’s 40 was better than other recent running backs like Ezekiel Elliott, Leonard Fournette, Christian McCaffrey and Alvin Kamara. Barkley also turned in great jumps that demonstrated his explosiveness and was superb in the running back drills. His combine performance locks him into the top-four picks of the 2018 NFL Draft and bolsters his chances of going No. 1 overall.

So experts see him as a possible #1 and a sure top 4. But if the QB’s mess up the top 4….just WOW. If you’re picking at 7 you simply cannot look past him if he’s available unless a trade just blows our socks off.

  26. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    This is a 230 lb man with incredible athletic skills…and a blazing 4.4 40.

  27. Ludicrous Speed Says:

Barkley, now there’s the top rated talent in this draft. Chubb should definitely be gone, but Rotoworld has the Bucs taking Bark.

  28. doctor_berto Says:

    St pete,

He also averaged a little over 5 yards a carry in COLLEGE and has shown that he struggles to run up the gut. Trent Richardson was a can’t miss running back prospect also but didn’t have the vision to do it in the NFL. Saquon is high risk high reward. I would much rather see us sure up the secondary with a talent like Derwin.

  29. Lord Cornelius Says:

If we landed Barkley then I think my preference would be:

    R1-Barkley – RB
    R2-Hughes/Jackson/Alexander – CB
R4-OG (I’ve seen a few decent OGs here in mocks – Virginia Tech kid or something)
R5-R7 DT/DE/S – there should be decent developmental DT/DEs in that range but likely will need to address youth on the D-line in 2019 if this played out this way

We could also entertain a trade back in R2 if there’s a decent pool of CBs still sitting there; although I’d pounce on Joshua Jackson at 38 if he’s made it there. Fits exactly what we want in terms of excelling in off-coverage and is a bigger dude that should be able to hang with big WRs on the outside

  30. Lord Cornelius Says:

The Penn State O-line was pretty terrible from everything I’ve read. He may dance a bit too much at times but so did Barry Sanders.

  31. JimmyJack Says:

Joe in your quests around the NFL maybe you could ask some ex-players or coaches if Guards can be game changers. Nelson will be going in the first round(as high as #2). He will be going that high for a reason so I think the answer could surprise you.

A quick comparison at our guard play last year to our guard play in 2016 is night and day. We don’t win 9 games in 2016 without exceptional(at times) Guard play. Soft football teams generally struggle. That’s what we are right now.

Unsure what constitutes game changing but guards can dictate physicality and be a big factor in winning games.

  32. Mike Johnson Says:

I don’t think safety or DB is the way to go with our 1st pick. We got so many other important needs. If we just gotta go DB, I’d go with Fitzpatrick. The guy has that versatility to be used all over the field. My guess is we will go with a DB though. In my heart..I hope not.

  33. LUVMYBUCS Says:

A guard? Joe wouldn’t but also wouldn’t lose sleep over it — though through the hundreds (thousands?) of football games Joe has watched, he’s yet to see a guard change a game.

Hall of Famer Running Back Jerome Bettis
    Concerning: Left Guard Alan Faneca

“Alan was critical to my career because whenever we went into a situation where we had an offensive lineman move, Alan was always the guy to trap,” said Bettis. “He would run the counters or the powers or the traps. He had such versatility as a guard that we could move him. With his athleticism and agility, we were able to move in and create the holes on the opposite side of the line.

    Cont..

“His ability to play that position, dominate at that position, but be athletic enough to move around and travel from the standpoint of pulling as an offensive lineman, that is rare. Usually when you do it, it doesn’t end in success. When Alan pulled we had a tremendous amount of success with our ability to pull.”

  34. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Moderation? lol

  35. JimmyJack Says:

Mike…..If we are just talking defense then what is a more important need then secondary?

  36. SteelStudBuc Says:

Trade down get more picks please. Lots of good players available

  37. LUVMYBUCS Says:

PerChris Hoke: “Alan Faneca was an old school type guard who played hard nosed and physical, the way that position was meant to be played. His ability to dominate the opponent at the point of attack and also to get out on the edge and blow open the hole to spring the RB to the next level is what makes him one of the best to ever do it. “

PerMatt Cushing: “Alan was one of the most dominating lineman I had the opportunity to watch. Whether it was pulling, blocking one on one, coming off a double team to block a linebacker that should have had a speed advantage, or handling the most stout of pass rushers, Alan got it done and got it done with an attitude befitting a Steelers lineman . Not only was he dominant but he was consistently dominant, game in, game out, year in , year out. It was fun to be able to call him a teammate. And on top of all that, he was a better person and friend.”

  38. LUVMYBUCS Says:

I wonder why Shady McCoy is BEGGING for Richie Incognito not to retire.
Even willing to fork over his $300,000 bonus.

  39. JimmyJack Says:

The thing that’s most important is what Licht is thinking. The fact that he signed no free agent secondary players sounds like he is targeting those positions high in the draft.

Looking at who they have interviewed so far supports this. D.James, M.Huges, J.Jackson ect come to mind.

Licht has also interviewed Nelson and Hernandez. Sure sounds like Guard is on his radar

  40. LUVMYBUCS Says:

LG Gene Upshaw – The G.O.A.T

So are you saying, (LG) Gene Upshaw wasn’t a critical part in the Raiders neutralizing the Purple People Eaters.

Big Gene & Art Shell mowed over Alan Page & Carl Eller for what? 200 + yds off the left side.

C’mon Lee, from the Late 70’s till now.
There’s way too many examples of dominate/or terrible guard play changing the outcome of games.

that did certainly change the game……

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!!

  43. Lord Cornelius Says:

    Good points LUV & 813.

All I know is a lot of teams with elite OGs; have either had elite interior pockets for their QBs to pass from and/or elite running lanes.

I remember watching tape breakdown for fantasy purposes (god that’s sad lol); and so much of Jay Ajay’s good games were when their interior with Pouncey was healthy; vs having no running lanes in the games the interior was rattled with injury.

Jordan Howard has had an excellent trio of interior lineman; and this was also pointed out in a lot of his film.

Like 80% of the top 10 scoring teams in 2017 had top 10 rushing games.

I think a run game + play calling would have been HUGE for 2017. So many FGs that should have been TDs.

Watching that Carolina game yesterday – we easily left 11 points on the board either because the O-line got blown up in the red zone; or because Koetter went pu5sy on the play calling. That was a theme throughout the year.

And even the one TD pass Jameis had – was a deep drop high difficulty long developing play from the f*cking 15 yard line. Why are you running a play like that there? Super low % of success and super risky.

He ran the same type of play on a red zone possession that resulted in a big sack taking us out of scoring range. Deep drop and then boom hit by Julius Peppers because there was no quick pass option in the play and not even time to realize he was about to get hit because of how many steps he took in his drop.

In the red zone it needs to be 3 step drops quick passing or play action roll out. Not deep play action drops. Not deep drops in general. And if we have a run game we can hopefully pound a lot of TDs in vs running Martin for -2 yards and then trying to run another deep drop passing play from the 12 yard line.

  44. Lord Cornelius Says:

top 10 rushing teams* in terms of average rushing yards per game

—Yes you have, Joe, it’s just that you haven’t recognized it.

Here’s my comparison: If you are ever lucky enough to see a glacier fall into the sea, just remember the long number of years that it took for that glacier to get to that point. That’s what interior linemen are; they are the foundation of any formidable offense, and consistent production and big plays (and a healthy QB!) are the result.

  46. SOEbuc Says:

Guard might not be able to change a game, but Quenton Nelson could possibly change this Oline for the next decade.

Running in the teeth of defense – Howard had some good games, against a few quality run defenses.

  50. JimmyJack Says:

Lord Corn….In both Carolina games our offensive line was completely manhandled by their Dline. Especially in pass pro. Star Lotuleilei, Kwon Shorts and Luke Keuchly all made big key plays against our interior line. If we get better guard play and can limit what those players can do against us then maybe we win that second game…..A game in which we had the ball with a chance to win…..Of course when we had a chance to win our Oline got blown up and gave up a big play the other way.

If Nelson can help us win games I’ll take him, game changer or not. Wins>stats

  51. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Sidenote: Low-Key

  52. SOEbuc Says:

I’ve hated the “can’t develop a good CB” BS for a long time. Who the hell are you talking about Joe? VH3 and Ryan Smith were the only CBs taken with the early rounds of this coaching staff. You expected them to teach CB Ryan Smith to turn to NFL safety his rookie year? He also looked to some what develop a bit more last year. VH3 has not spent enough time on the field for you to know how he will turn out. He might be badass at nickel. If I’m leaving another amazing CB that we drafted with this coaching staff that was suppose to come in and shut down Julio, M.Thomas, and Funchess/Benjamin, let me know cus I can’t remember.

All for Denzel Ward if we moved down to the 12 spot.

  53. JimmyJack Says:

Don’t sweat it SOE. The Bucs are very likely taking a CB this year. R.Smith and VHIII are still going to be on the team.

That’s 3 developing CBs the Bucs will be working with next year. 4 if Elliot makes the team.

Joes take that we can’t develop Corners will be put to the test for our viewing pleasure.

  54. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Bucsfanman

    Exactly my brotha.

We need that Ottis Anders,Chunk Muncie, or Jerome Bettis type brusier; to put his stamp on this offense. Too much finese IMO

  55. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    Berto

Sorry I just do not see any DB in this class who is a true difference maker of the type Barkley could be….I do not see any real ‘SHUTDOWN” corners…the kind of guy you put on Julio and he gets the job done…then again there are not many of those currently playing. That’s the ONLY kind of DB I would sign off on at 7. I simply don’t think the names being bandied about are that great and all of them have weaknesses.

And with all due respect Berto NOBODY in the NFL front offices, scouts etc would agree with your observations about Barkley at PSU. He has been the star for two straight ELEVEN win seasons for the Nittany Lions. Can you name their QB? Is he projected to even go to the NFL? I honestly do not know but it’s hard to see how Franklin wins 22 games over the past two years without Barkley.

  56. StPeteBucsFan Says:

I’m still with the big three or trade down. I’ve always assumed Chubb will be gone…but with the QB rush we might get Nelson or Barkley.

It’s becoming an increasingly difficult call for me between those two.
Somebody made the point…draft Barkley and have a good running game for five years…draft Nelson and have one for ten years. I take their point.

But I’ve become really greedy. I’ve been brainwashed by 813 …”no excuses”
I want to win in 2018 and if we get Barkley…I think we have the best chance to win now. I concede long term perhaps not as good a pick as an OG or DL….

But honestly guys…for 2018…it’s Barkley…he’s a plug and play genuine difference maker. Can you even imagine after the years of the “Muscle Turtle” getting behind the defense only to get pulled down from behind well short of the goal line (man how many times I cursed the TV) what it would be like to have a freaking 4.4 guy shifting gears and simply running away from defenders?

  57. Bucsfanman Says:

LUV- Bring me the “bruisers” ALL day E’ry day!
Wow, you went Ottis on me!

  58. StPeteBucsFan Says:

Question for more informed guys here. Barkley clearly possesses a freakish physical set of skills. Does anybody know what his offfield rep is like? Smart?
Good guy? Great teammate? I haven’t read much about that.

You all already know my views. Top 3 only or move down! Yes a great Guard can change a game including Hernandez even if we don’t get the top Guard.

I haven’t read them. Then again I pretty much just see Walter Football and CBS Sports.

Be on Guard. We will not pick a safety, corner, RB, DE, QB, WR, LB, TE, K, P or anyone at number 7. My hunch is that we trade down to get extra picks. We need a lot of players. No one in secondary is worth a dam, our pass ruch with me mostly JPP and Big Mac (GM the rest of you). Our Linebacking is the defense right now.

Offensively, we need a stud running back. This is a deep draft. Trade down, pick a DE and a RB and and maybe get a solid corner if we can get an additional pick to trade down.

We need bodies and the cemetery is running out.
