Giants Trade Or Draft Barkley; Bucs Off The National Radar

April 21st, 2018

Mike Mayock speaks

Joe learned a few things after hearing NFL Network super draft guru Mike Mayock get peppered by reporter questions for an hour yesterday.

First, it’s worth noting that Mayock only made one reference to the Bucs and Tampa — and it had to do with Jon Gruden and the Raiders.

The Bucs are barely visible on the national radar; there are many examples. Back at the head coaches breakfast at the NFL Owners Meetings last month in Orlando, Joe experienced a first at the annual event. No national media guy popped in at Dirk Koetter’s table to ask even one Bucs question and move on.

Outside the Bucs-friendly crew on Good Morning Football, it’s hard to find much national interest in Tampa Bay.

Second, Mayock made it very clear he believes beastly running back Saquon Barkley will be selected by the Giants if they don’t trade down out of the No. 2 overall pick. But Mayock doesn’t think the Giants would consider going below No. 6 overall.

Your Bucs are at No. 7.

No Barkley but your thinking of LSU star Derrius Guice running the ball for the Bucs with a second-round pick? It seems Mayock believes Guice could be there in Round 2 due to questions about his commitment to the game.

  1. AlteredEgo Says:

Yep…the 7 hole has little leverage for trading down as EVERYBODY know the Bucs will not take a QB and a QB is what all the interest that early is in. So a QB eager team will work a deal with 6 or 8….no worries….the Bucs “should” be able to draft a excellent starter @ 7

  2. BetterBuccinBelieveIt Says:

Jason Licht will be GOING UP to get Barkley. Mark it down. You may hold THIS Bucs fan accountable! And be guaran-damn-teed certain that with all the constant dissenters out here on JBF, that THIS Bucs fan will absolutely be letting all those know FO-SHO when you keep getting that Saquon S (tuff) told to ya by THIS guy. 🙂

Go Bucs! Go Bold! Go Barkley! Go Primetime!

  3. feelthepewterpower Says:

“Commitment to the game rumors” likely means smokescreen. I don’t think Gettleman takes barkley, not his MO to value rb that higj, nor has he traded back…not that he wont dont do so but its likey the Giants
Dont drop lower than sixth. I think the nfl would love to see barkley in new york, however…

  4. Trevor in Orlando Says:

@AlteredEgo, the fact the Bucs are not a QB needy wouldn’t prevent another team from trading up, because the team looking to trade up wouldn’t be trying to get ahead of the Bucs, but rather the other QB needy teams. I’m not saying it’s a slam dunk the Bucs will trade down, just that the logic used to figure that other teams wouldnt trade up with them is flawed.

  5. StPeteBucsFan Says:

I hadn’t heard that about Guice before. Too bad if true because he has the best skill set and potential after Barkley…Fournette 2.0

My fantasy draft would have us somehow getting Barkley…but I’d also be happy with a Nelson/Guice (or whichever RB we like) combo. We’d still have a good running game.

  6. Gobucs Says:

I’m so glad they won that last game against the saints.

Such a moral victory and man what a difference it made.

    Idiots.

  7. Joeypoppems Says:

I wonder if Barkley ends up on the board at #6 if the Colts would take him. Similar to what the Cowboys did when drafting Zeke. Cowboys had Romo, who was very injury prone so they shifted to a run first approach.

Since Andrew Luck has earned the injury prone label, I wonder if the Colts will take the same approach.

This doesnt have anything to do with the Bucs. Just a general draft thought I guess.

  8. YO BUC Says:

NUMBER 7 IS A VERY GOOD SPOT , JUST WATCH AND SEE !!!

  9. Joeypoppems Says:

As far as Guice’s “commitment to the game concerns” go, this is the first I heard of it. Im curious what is leading to this concern.

Only thing I could think of off the top of my head is I’ve seen a take kind of like this because he plays a lot of Fortnite like millions of other people in the world these days lol.

But its weird that he wouldnt be committed to the game that basically saved his life….

  10. Mike Johnson Says:

If you watched Licht’s Draft press conf over on Bucs.com, he gave the impression we would be staying put at 7. He says there are players the Bucs like at 7. So I see us going Nelson or a DB. Barkley and Chubb will be..long gone. The only way we trade down is its an unimaginable offer we cannot refuse. And I just don’t see that at 7. Had we tanked though……

  11. Waterboy Says:

Cleveland would be smart to trade down and take several picks from Buffalo if Barkley is gone by #4. That’ll take 3 QB’s off the board by pick #5 so in that scenario Denver would either take Nelson, Chubb, a QB or potentially trade down. Best bet for the Bucs in that scenario would be for Denver to also trade down. But if they stay put and take Chubb and Indy takes Nelson Licht may be able to trade down to 11 with Miami or 15 with AZ.

  12. pelbuc Says:

Couldn’t agree more with “GoBucs”. That stupid, meaningless win over the Saints cost us picking at #5 which would have generated much more trade down possibilities. This teams has lots of holes to fill and depth issues. Bucs could have garnered several draft picks at 5 but GM Licht would have probably picked some bust anyway i.e Aguayo, ASJ, VH3, Sims or that 5th round RB last year that walked away from the Bucs. DJack should also be trade bait on draft day.

  13. Guzzie Says:

Sorry everyone but it’s going to be defense the first 2 rounds and that’s a good thing, sure we will draft an RB, but it’ll be in the 4th, probably between Hines, John Kelly, Walton, Kerryon Johnson, or Freeman, don’t get me wrong, I’d love a trade down, but Denver and Indy have both said they are trying to trade down already, and our defense needs some impact players in the secondary, ignoring the defense early will lead to 6-10, buckle up Bucs

  14. AlteredEgo Says:

Guzzie…agree….CB/Saf either order 1 &2…RB well come later or vet FA post draft….must close the back door…

  15. Erik w/ Clean Athletics Says:

All I know is that we got freakin OJ HOWARD at #19 last year.

Who in their right mind would’ve ever thought that an elite talent like him would’ve been available all the way into the 1st round like that???

We will definitely be getting an elite-caliber player at #7, we just have to wait and see how it all plays out as far as who we can get and when.

  16. unbelievable Says:

@Guzzie I would prefer John Kelly the most out of those guys you mentioned.

  17. SOEbuc Says:

    Joe

Not one national media person stopped to talk to Dirk Koetter, Joe? You must be out of your mind. National media always knows SOO much about Bucs players and the team. Can’t f*cking stand when national tries to talk about the Bucs. Got Joe for the true knowlegde.

  18. Broy34@me.com Says:

Perfect. Just where we wanna be

  19. I Bleed Pewter and Red Says:

This is why I brought up the ideal if we can’t find a trade partner then we manufacture one. Instead of settling and wasting clout on a player who’s value is lesser than the #7 pick, we should consider taking a small gamble and draft the best QB left on the board. It may seem risky but if successful it could force a trade. There are teams sitting at #11 on needing a QB but unfortunately they would probably sit pat and let one come to them knowing we don’t need a QB, and picks #8,9, 10 don’t need a QB. This strategy would work, and if for some reason it doesn’t at the draft, someone will talk turkey after the draft.

  20. gambelero Says:

So, Buscaglia’s POD Mock with trades has us getting Nelson, with Indy beating us to the punch on the fleecing tradedown for QB4. It was interesting because they played GMs and you could listen to them bargaining for spots and players.

Other players of Bucs interest, Chubb at 4, Barkley at 5, McGlinchy at 10, Vea at 11, James at 14, Wynn at 21, Guice at 31 (close enough for a tradeback), Hernandez at 32.

  21. Alstott up the gut Says:

If all 3 top non QB’s are off the board at 7, then one QB is still available for a QB hungry team to trade up. If not, hopefully the pick is Derwin James!

  22. DanBucsFan Says:

Hallelujah!!!!!Our Bucs are not the darlings of NFL media this year, nore are they the sexy pick to be a team to go from worst to first. That is a blessing in my eyes, Our team needs to prove it on the field not on paper and certainly not in the off-season. If we start the year under radar and get off and running to say a 3-1 start before our bye week. Then, maybe then the league will take notice and our Bucs can EARN some respect on the field, instead of getting praise for high profile acquisitions ( D Jax – OJ ) etc. I am all in on our team this year and BELIEVE they will be a force to reckon with once our roster is complete after the draft. GO BUCS !!!! FIRE THE CANNONS !!

  23. Gambelero Says:

Maybe we should explore a three way trade with Buffalo and NYG. Buffalo goes to 2, Giants go to 7 where they’ll get their win now guy, Barkley + 22, Bills’ lower second, lower third, and next year’s one, kick back a six. We get 12, Bills higher 2, higher 3 and next year’s 2, kick back our comp 7. If Darnold’s on the board, it would work.

  24. SOEbuc Says:

    Guzzie

Been saying this to every fan that wants a RB in second round since they started saying it.

    Mark Walton in the fourth.

Defense in the first but unless we land Nelson. If we don’t we need to get Hernandez or Wynn in the second. We still have broke back mountain of Glazer cash J.R. Sweezy that is still injured as a starting OG.

  25. lambchop Says:

Is this the same Mayock that said Trent Richardson was the best RB to come out since Adrian Peterson?

Jim Brown was right from the beginning.

  26. ATrain Says:

Since when do the Bucs get any respect from Media

They are all about Belacheat. Dallas Cowboys and the 80 year old EGO and the SF kneeling Bumms

We could win 10 and get two lines in all of media

It’s all about Joe Bucs Fan. No other crap media

  27. SOEbuc Says:

    @gambelero

You notice how they did that with have the Bucs session on the phone with the wrong number. They did that on purpose because like I said before, the national media knows jack sh#t about the Bucs and don’t want to.

  28. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    @Gobucs

Am I reading your post correctly? You call anybody who doesn’t agree with you an idiot. WOW. LMAO

You realize you’re not even talking about a fact but an opinion? IE neither side of this debate can really prove it…although if the Bucs beat NO and get off to a good start against a bruising schedule an argument might be made that it is you who is an idiot. Just sayin’

  29. mark2001 Says:

Yeah…big win last game of the year.

Not wanting to tell you “I told you so”… we will likely draft a guy overpriced and under talented… because of that win.

Mark my words…and if you like…yes…I told you so. How does that big win taste now?

  30. martinni Says:

3 kinds of teams dominate the national spotlight. The winners (Patriots,) the perpetual losers (Browns,) and the teams that usually win but have a rare bad season (Giants/Denver.) I have been watching the NFL channels “Path to the Draft,” (or whatever it’s called) every night at 6:00 PM and I can count on 2 fingers the times they mentioned the Buc’s last week and I don’t think ESPN know’s there is a team in Tampa.I realize the Buc’s have been on a bad stretch, but they are still my team and I will follow them until the day I die and I am sure there are many fans in the same boat. We get no respect which if you factor it in may be part of the reason we don’t win.

  31. Alanbucsfan Says:

If big 3 are gone and Bucs don’t trade down, the pick will be Ward, Fitzpatrick or James – all 3 will help secondary tremendously- then OL , DL and rb will be addressed later

  32. Buxfan Says:

Please let me say this now. Screenshot it right now. Put some money on it.

BUCS WILL NOT WASTE DRAFT PICKS TO MOVE UP TO DRAFT A RB IN A RB DEEP DRAFT.
And if you believe the Bucs that dumb to do this. You are a typical Bucs fan dummy.

  33. Destinjohnny Says:

    Beating the Saints killed us

  34. BucEmUp Says:

It’s very simple this team is a joke they are the only team to have the worst defensive coordinator in the league over the last 2 years and be stupid enough to keep that same coordinator for a 3rd year. Everybody knows they’re going to start off I win three everybody knows they’re going to have the League worst defense again and everybody knows that the coaching staff and certain players will not even be here next year. You’ve already got what, two defensive backs that have refused to come and pay us a visit while accepting invites from other teams? It’s a joke a sad pathetic joke. Fans will be saying jpp is old and washed-up Jason light got ripped off and needs to be fired and we have no talent and our secondary when really all we need is a damn defensive coordinator who doesn’t run the most predictable scheme out of 32 teams. This is the first year as a Bucs Fan that I literally have zero excitement for the upcoming season because I already know what’s going to happen. I bought into the lies that Smith was going to change up his style in the defense last offseason and it never happened not for one single game and it’s not going to happen this season either. Hopefully the glazers keep Jason light around I like dirt but he’s as good as gone with his BFF Smith

  35. LostinPA Says:

If the big 3 are gone it will be because the Gaints, Browns and Colts stayed pat and took them. I think the Broncos will take a QB so the Bills will have to come to us for a trade. The Dolphins also need a QB and every pick the passes makes it easier for Miami to trade up too. If the Bills try to be cute and wait for a QB to come to them they will cut there own throat. Hell, I might call Miami and offer a lesser deal for extra picks just out of spite. Bills fans will riot if they don’t get one the top four QB after all they have given up to get in range.

  36. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    Mark

The win tastes GREAT now. Heading into New Orleans with our last game a win over our opponent.

Meanwhile you have such a losing attitude that you have already written off the draft before it even takes place. That is the EPITOME of a negative attitude.

If we get one of the big three or a solid trade down it is going to be all the LOSERS angry with us because some of us hate LOSING especially to move up for a draft pick that represents a 40% chance of failure anyway.

  37. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

Between now and the draft, the wild rumors and deliberate misinformation will get even more wild.
I will be glad when all this speculation is over

  38. Defense Rules Says:

Lucky #7. Even IF one of the Big-3 is off the board AND Bucs stay pat at #7, we still can’t lose. WHOEVER we pick helps us. There’s a TON of talent still there at #7 … we can’t lose. Well, UNLESS Licht starts drinking that home-made craft beer again & some kicker or long-snapper becomes the twinkle in his eye.

  39. Alstott up the gut Says:

After big 3….. Ward is too short…. Fitzpatrick lives and dies by his versatility. Just has Mark Barron written all over it to me. Take James. Could you imagine adding a Ramsey or Adams to our secondary?? Other than a trade back, I hope that’s the pick!

  40. Tony from L.A. Says:

Only bad teams would trade up to draft a Rb in the top 5.
Look at all the super bowl teams that have done this…
Don’t hold your breath while you look for one.

    Grab Nelson if he falls.
Get a young DE in round 2.

Keep fortifying the most important position groups in football!

FIX THE TRENCHES, FIX THE BUCS!!

  41. Hectorbucs Says:

For all those fans that hate the win over the Saints last year: I have a very dangerous cancer (didn’t think I would last until the draft this year). I was at that game and I will be forever consoled by the memory of that beautiful pass to Godwin and the thrill of that miraculous ending.

And if you believe the Bucs that dumb to do this. You are a typical Bucs fan dummy.

    🙂 🙂

First of all, I’m not sure who this hack is….”Buxfan”, but hey, let’s say he/she is new. Which is allowed, or “fine”. I assume, which is fine by me, that this …person (hack) has directed this comment toward MUA…based on my comment above earlier, about Jason moving up for SAQUON. 🙂

Apparently this person, who refers to SAQUON as “a RB”, which I suppose in technicality that describes his “position”, but dude or chick, to call this guy “a dummy” on this site, when who the hell are you…..you have got to come much stronger that that blunt instrument, fool.

Next, with all your CAPITAL LETTERS used, you certainly must have a hotline to Licht, to know what he will will do, since your double-wide crew there in the park has informed you that he will indeed “pick” from a “deep draft” at things you call running backs, after SAQUON.

Next….and perhaps most importantly, work on your grammar (which kind of supports the double-wide, maybe (single-wide) proposition I mentioned. Copied and pasted…..
“And if you believe the Bucs that dumb to do this.” Wow, just wow.

So, there lies the result. “Buxfan” is whomever…..but apprarently in incredibly poor grammatical form, I’m…the dummy. Certainly not that “person”. AND…..SAQUON is just a “running back”, and Buxfan, knows what Licht is doing, more than this “dummy”.

We shall see, in all your IQ and prescience “Buxfan”.

    Yes, we shall.

Go Bucs! Go Bold! Go Barkley! Go Primetime!

  43. NFLNut Says:

Saquon, Chubb, Nelson or TRADE DOWN … and if there isn’t a trade down available, Minkah, Derwin or Ward … it’s not that hard people

  44. FortMyersDave Says:

That win over the Saints was a two edged sword. In “89” the Bucs beat Detroit 21-10 and essentially gave the Lions Barry Sanders with the 3rd overal pick and then watched KC and the ATL nab Derrick Thomas and Neon Deion before they got Broderick Thomas……. That could happen again and the trolls would have a field day but the WIN over the Saints I feel still has huge value as StPete pointed out. 1.The Bucs nailed an enemy who was playing t win, recall the Saints were playing for the division title and did not know until after their game went final if the ATL or the Panthers won their game. 2. AND this is HUGE IMHO; Winston exposed a huge flaw in Koetter’s game planning by mailing that 39 yard winning TD to Godwin by refusing to go with the “dump off 5 yard pass and let the kicker win the game mentality” that is (hopefully was) the Koetter gameplan mentality. Play conservative when it counts to avoid the fumble or turnover, get vanilla in the red zone, etc, etc… He exemplified how dense and obtuse Koetter is for trusting a FG kicker to win or tie a game instead of going for the jugular. I think Koetter is now forced to shelve this mentality as if he does it early next season and the kangaroo kicker jakes a kick it could result in the Bucs firing a coach mid season for the first time since Ray Perkins got axed by Hugh C.

Tony from LA: okay I get your point but where do the Bucs get a RB? Will there be one left by day 3 when the Bucs pick with the Giants 4th round pick???

  45. Mike Johnson Says:

What complete Idiots we were not tanking that last game last season. We could be sittin at 5 in..High Cotton right now. Not a smart play by this organization. But this franchise has historically been cursed by not doing what was right..at the right time. Yes, GO BUCS. But you as usual, Bit your own selves in the A..!

  46. NFLNut Says:

    **************

^ I have no problem with the win against the Saints … but I feel we should have tanked the Jets and Dolphins games … had we done that we would have had the #3 pick and could have traded with the Jets for the (3) additional 2nd rounders and then completed the rumored 3-team trade with the Giants and Bills whereby we would have dropped to #12 and picked up another 2nd and 4th.

So, we could have moved down from #3 to #12 and added FOUR additional 2nd rounders and an additional 4th rounder. THAT would have been great!

As for whether or not we can get a quality RB in the 4th round … sure, but not one of the top RB’s as Saquon, Guice, Michel, Jones II, Chubb and probably Penny will all be gone by the end of the 2nd round and Kerryon and maybe even Royce Freeman will likely be gone by the end of the 3rd round … if we wait till round 4 or later we’re probably drafting a back like Marc Walton, Nyheim Hines, Bo Scarborough, Kalen Ballage, etc … okay but nothing to get excited about imho.

    *************

  47. JimmyJack Says:

There is a very realistic chance that Licht is planning on drafting a Secondary player in the first 2 rounds. When you look at secondary as a unit, Safety’s & Corners, it is the weakest part of this team. Most fans seem to think we are weaker at RB which is debatable at best.

  48. JimmyJack Says:

The Giants have the best spot in the draft.

If we had their pick the speculation would be insane. The entire fanbase would be divided into Barkley fans, Chubb fans, trade down fans and a few Nelson fans.

That would be a lot of fun debating and arguing.

  49. NFLNut Says:

If we had #2 I’d be calling for us to TRADE DOWN

  54. uckinator Says:

NFL Nut: Saquon, Nelson, or Chubb, if not, trade down. No trading partner? pick either Minkah, Derwin, or Ward. Enough said ! Everyone else – Go home.

  55. NorCal Buc Says:

All of you thinking Nelson I just can’t see it, it takes us off schedule. We need a starting DB and starting RB in rounds 1 & 2 whether that is Derwin, Ward or Fitzpatrick then Guice ,Jones or Penny or Barkley then Isiah Oliver, Mike Hughes or Ronnie Harrison it has to be some combo of DB RB or vice versa if not we are looking for a starting RB in the 4th . If for some reason they go Nelson then I would expect a RB to be signed in FA immediately after draft.
