Trading In The NFL

March 11th, 2018

Used?

There is something odd going on in the NFL.

A little over a week ago, we learned the Bucs missed out on grabbing Robert Quinn for a fourth-round pick. Instead, the Rams shipped the veteran sackmeister to the Dolphins for a fourth-round pick.

The Bucs’ pick was sweeter than the Dolphins’.

Now, yeah, the Dolphins and Rams swapped sixth-round picks as well. You cannot tell Joe that Licht — his team in the worst need of an edge rusher — would let Quinn slip away by quibbling over a virtually worthless sixth-round pick slot. If that is truly the case, folks at One Buc Palace truly need to reassess their priorities.

Last week ,when the Seahawks traded another sackmeister, Michael Bennett to the Super Bowl champion Eagles, it was learned that the Belicheats offered a sweeter ransom.

Now Joe had been told by someone who has experience dealing with NFL transactions that NFL protocol is to go with the best offer, not jerk around a prospective bidding partner.

Is there a changing landscape within the NFL inner-circles? Do teams now have agendas when they put players on the trading block?

If so, Joe has to wonder what other potential trades Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht has been involved with and, for whatever reason, had the rug pulled out from under him?

  1. Baker Mayfield Says:

Your a loyal friend Joe. Licht took us into 2016 with 1 receiver. In 2017 he led us into battle 1/2 of a pass rusher. Why would think this year would be any different. Jason Licht is clown and should be fired today. I won’t even mention the 2016 draft. SMH

  2. Jeffbuc Says:

Sounds like a excuse. I see why a team wouldn’t want to trade a player t to the patriots. But the perennially power bucs that’s another story no one would turn down better picks from us. We are the cute bunny or turtle at the zoo. I would trade Odell and Laveon to us and have fun laughing thab e still have to kick field goals in the red zone. Nice try though

  3. Jeffbuc Says:

I come to this website because you are a fan when you start talking like this it’s makes you and your website sound crazy no one is going to Take less less from another team to stick it to the bucs Just be real and say we never made a good offer. This sounds like a glazers gave you some hush money to have our back article. The exact reason. I come to this website is for articles not about this. Don’t you dare do this and start making excuses for a couple extra bucks.

  4. Jeffbuc Says:

We are tanking even a toddler can seee that if we are last again in sacks this will be the excuse. We tried to get better the other teams agreed with Licht and koetter and thought we were so clos that trading is Quinn or bennnett would have set us over the top and made us immediately the favorites to win the super bowl

  5. Not there yet Says:

I could see not wanting to give Patriots a pass rusher but the bucs no one fears them. I get it you gotta create news but why would a playoff team care that bucs pick was better by three spots in the 4th round? You get that guy out of your division, we play them next year he knows their scheme and won’t love to stick to the team that traded him and uprooted his family

  6. Joeypoppems Says:

I’m sure there are some teams with agendas out there. I remember when Jimmy G got dealt there were rumors that Belichick refused to trade him to the Browns because of their history.

I just don’t think any agendas are in play here. That report that the Pats made a better offer for Bennett also says that the Pats made that offer as the Seahawks and Eagles were finalizing their deal.

As far as the Quinn trade goes, what if Licht never got a chance to sweeten his deal after Miami’s offer? Isn’t it possible that the Rams could’ve just accepted the Miami offer without giving Licht that chance?

  7. Joeypoppems Says:

LOL. FA didn’t even start yet and the word “tanking” is already being brought up because a couple trades weren’t made…..

  8. Chris in WA Says:

And Richard Sherman is now signing with the 49ers. Yeah he turned 30 and had an injury but everyone wants Brent Grimes back who is in his mid 30’s and had an injury last training camp causing him to miss multiple games.

I remember when this team needed a new coach after Raheem was fired after 2011 other GM’s wouldn’t let the Bucs interview their coaching assistants as payback for the Bucs not extending them the same professional courtesy in years past. Is something similar happening now that we don’t know about? Why does nobody want to seem to trade to the Bucs?

(And yes, I know Richard Sherman was cut and therefore free to sign wherever he wants)

  9. Joe Says:

Licht took us into 2016 with 1 receiver

Two actually but the No. 2 receiver — surprise! — got hurt ending his career.

  10. Joe Says:

I could see not wanting to give Patriots a pass rusher but the bucs no one fears them.

It would not shock Joe one bit if it was true Rams didn’t want to trade Quinn within NFC.

  11. Ed Kerber Says:

Jason Licht should be judged by the team he fields, not the team that could have been. Compared to where he was when he started, the Bucsa are better. It is his responsibility to make sure the Bucs are at least good. Right now they are several pieces from being good. There are several periods to make the team better. First is the pre-free agency period. Licht made the team better by subtraction. I expect he is going to be active getting 26-28 year olds on the roster. He has no interest in over 30. Which is not a bad plan. The Chucky way was to get pieces every year that would need to be replaced the next year. It really made the Bucs terrible for a long time. The team needs to win this year. No doubt about it. Remember that Sapp was drafted after a trade down. We ne d to do that more. I still have faith.

  12. Marc Says:

    JOE,

I did t realize you were on the Glazers payroll.

    -Infuriated Bucs fan

  13. Costa Rica John Says:

The Bucs appear to want to build through the draft. It makes sense because you can keep the players longer at a lower salary. They still have a few of their own players they will need to fit into the salary cap. Winston is going to take a large portion of that cash. Even had the Bucs signed Quinn and Bennett there are no guarantees the pass rush would improve. The Bucs are a couple years of good drafts away from competing for a Championship. They can’t afford to make mistakes. I can’t wait for the draft to get here and see what happens. Go Bucs!!!

  14. Bird Says:

He’s right. Trades are different. These days, Teams seem to care where their former player wants to go. Teams trade who they want to trade too Yes people will not trade to team in division and /or patriots.

And bucs never had chance with Richard Sherman. He is a Californian guy And wanted to play in State with contender so he signed with the first team he met with who wanted to get deal done. 49ers will be a contender. Trust me.

  15. Defense Rules Says:

Jason Licht potentially “had the rug pulled out from under him?” That MAY have been the case in some of these Joe, but I’m starting to think more & more that Jason’s hands have been tied by the Glazer Boyz. If the Bucs REALLY wanted Quinn, they could’ve made the deal irresistible to the Rams. We’ve perennially been under the CAP, often by quite a bit (like this year). GMs & HCs who want to field competitive teams don’t do that willingly I’m sure. Big believer in an old saying … ‘If you can’t run with the big dogs, get back on the porch’. Glazer Boyz strike me as toy poodles trying to run with Rottweilers.

  16. Bnomo Says:

How do we really know what was offered? Any proof other than team management day on what the buc s offered?

If someone offers you $100 for something you are selling and someone else offers you $150, which would you take? But, then many other factors can also come into play.

  17. Bnomo Says:

But, then many other factors can also come into play.

  18. Bird Says:

Keep blaming licht if you want too …but appears bucs have been offering same deals for guys like Quinn , Bennett etc etc. that team doesn’t have to respond to us.

By the way, free agency will be tough too. We play in tough division and have been at bottom of NFC for too long. So you can put some of that on glazers for sure But to say they are cheap…I am pretty sure they just gave the largest deal to a receiver in NFL history.

This website has turned into a winery for sure. Who isnt frustrated but every
Article is now a cryfest. Bunch of babies. Give free agency and draft a chance.

  19. Bucballbaby84 Says:

Did y’all know that there is chatter that the Bucs are going to sign EJ Gaines signing day for about 8-9 million a year? Heck yes! I live in western ny and I watched him with the bills all year last year cause they are my second favorite team(buc ball #1, 4 life!). He’s a stud defender and can lock mofo’s down! Trumain Johnson had better be on their list as well. Team has plenty of wiggle room to get both. We honestly can’t produce quality cornerbacks for NFL level with our coaches so we have to get good ones in free agency.

  20. Off the Cuff Says:

It’s obvious by the transactions so far that Licht has only been kicking the tires on trades , and prioritizing re-signing their own.

Not bad, but Dungy’s Bucs were made better by timely quality free agent additions.

All of our home grown defenders have one thing in common- they are soft. Fix that and 50% of problem solved.

  21. Bucballbaby84 Says:

This team is badly coached in all phases, Plain and simple. Also the decision making has been horribly off at times. It is said the game is fought between the trenches but it makes ya wonder… wouldn’t it start with coaching?

  22. Bucballbaby84 Says:

So many times guys were lost on the field. Countless amount of times.

  23. Lucious Selmon Says:

EJ Gaines and Miko’s husband would be a fine duo. Sign a free agent running back, the BUILD THE WALLS.

EVERYTHING starts up front. We’ve got one of the best linebacker corps in the NFL, and they are being wasted playing behind our d-line.

The have a real camp! Toughness and discipline! If our DE can’t make the tackle move his feet, then he should at least be able to maintain his containment. Often they did neither last season!

No more ice cream and palm trees!

  24. BucEmUp Says:

Go get e.j gaines, go get Truman Johnson, bring back Grimes, draft that stud safety, get Julius peppers, hope Noah Spence balls out and the new dline coach is good.

If all of that happens, Mike Smith will make them all look like clowns.

Nobody wants to play for this staff. Dirk had embarrassed himself by keeping Smitty around and all.of the players know what’s coming. I’m not buying into hype this year.

The Bucs appear to want to build through the draft.
    ———–
True story! Jason says it all the time, the way you build a team is through the draft. If he manages to keep his draft picks together these guys might be great 2 years into their 2nd contracts. Wishful thinking, I know, but the record books point to yes. Mike, Jameis and Kwon are putting together record breaking careers.

If we don’t draft Q. Nelson hopefully we can get Will Hernandez (for Pablo)
As for this year, we’ll see after draft week.

  26. BFFL Says:

These are pretty high profile players….most likely they have it stated in contract to have a say where they get traded.

  27. MadMax Says:

Yeah its starting to stink pretty bad around here (with the Bucs). Last ranked D and the only thing so far, off season, is the D line coaching change (which is welcomed by me, at least its something). And Im pretty sure that was after many complaints from the fans including this site.

I dont know wth is going on but it looks like the brains in charge have said the heck with it and checked out. Are we really this deep in tank mode this early for GMC’s replacement Ed Oliver who will go top 3 in the 2019 draft? Are we being sold to someone else who will move the Bucs? Something just isnt adding up.

Yes I know its still early but this is how the last 5 years have started in the off season other than major coaching changes….no coaching change this year but still seeing the same ole stuff in early off season non moves that usually equals out to a “meh”. Then followed by another basement dwelling in the loser rankings at the end of the season.

  28. Bucballbaby84 Says:

Getting the family back together would be smart! EJ Gaines and Trumain Johnson! Wednesday March 14th!

  29. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @DB55

    Speaking for Pablo

“Pablo appreciates DB55 for suggesting Will Hernandez in the draft. Pablo thinks he would be a great pick in the 2nd round or even late 1st round if Pablo’s Bucs trade down for extra picks.
Pablo has been somewhat silent and embarrassed since Pablo’s homeboy Roberto Aguayo kicked like mierda. Pablo realizes that there aren’t many Hispanic choices for the NFL and is crushed that El Asesino….was more like El A$$.” Pablo is also embarrassed that Hason moved up to get him making the failure even worse. If Hason ever comes in to see Pablo table dance, Pablo will make sure Pablo slaps Hason up side the head with Pablo’s elongated arc.”

  30. K_Bassuka Says:

I’m sorry Joe but I’m not buying it. I’m sure you are getting this info from very reliable sources, but the logic doesn’t make any sense.

First off if one it’s to believe to believe that a GM it’s choosing where he trades the players instead of the best offer it’s to believe that the GM doesn’t have to answer to a team president or/and owner. I’m sure those over the GM would be happy to hear he turned down a better value for the team just because he doesn’t like a specific team, or to trade within the division and such, it’s not like they have to compete against the other 31 teams to win a SB you know.

No one expected the Rams to be as good as they were last year, I mean why would the Rams GM expect the Dolphins to be any good and possibly beat them in the SB right…

And I call BS on the Belicheat not trading Garappolo to the Browns, he didn’t wanted to trade him in the first place, but guess who stepped in and made him do it?

In other words, if the call not to trade the player to a specific team didn’t come from the owner, I don’t buy it.

  31. WutdaBucisthis Says:

For those who want E.J signed have to know He plays off man like Grimes. Imo our defense will not improve if we continuously line up 10yds off the line. No to re-signing Grimes. No to E.J.. This team needs another press man corner to line up opp VH3/Smith sign a top flight SS in FA. Now between our LBs and secondary the field would shrink for op. QBs
    1st Vea
    2nd DE
    3rd Penny
    #bringhomeDPoe
    #TRENCHWARFARE

  32. Bird Says:

    He can play man also.

He just played zone in bills system.

Like Veta pick though. Cornerback Ward from Ohio state is 2nd choice.

  33. Radman Says:

Wait till the 14th. If Licht does not bring home the bacon, fans have every right to berate him.

  34. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

I wonder what the trade market is for McCoy?

  35. Hodad Says:

I think in some cases when the trade is nearly the same it’s the players that have some say as to where they go. Example Bennett, I can see Pete saying Mike we have these offers, you’ve been a good soldier, any preference where you go? Then Bennett would say something like, hell no anywhere but the Bucs! What player for the same money wouldn’t rather ball in Philly, then lose in Tampa?

  36. AlteredEgo Says:

Licth has not been privy to the new NFL trading manual….LOL…

  37. IsrBuc Says:

Do teams consider what the traded player wants to some extent? Iwon’t be surprised if these vets simply don’t want to come to this circus

  38. Pit Says:

Free agency or trades don’t usually work for us so why should he bring free agents ?
Remember how excited we all were last year ?
How did it go for us?
    Exactly

Licht is doing the right thing.

  39. AlteredEgo Says:

The trend may be release the higher salaried “iffy” player to a sucker team…and go with a young cheaper fresh leg draft pick

  40. John meeks Says:

Whatdabucisthis, go watch the Penn state game when vita vea was getting his ass handed to him!He was getting handled one on one at that!then look at his career stats, after that,go look for any pass rushing moves this guy has.he doesn’t have any!his game is all power and he won’t overpower anyone in the nfl.furthermore, the dude will only be good for 30 plays per game in the Tampa heat.we have a one dimensional player in William gholston,we sure as hell don’t need another one!

  41. SteveK Says:

No way in hell the Rams turn down our third round pick for Quinn. I wish licht was savvy enough to have offered our 3 for Quinn.

The offer of our 4 was the same on Jimmy Johnson’s point scale to Miami’s offer of their fourth plus a swap of 6’s.

5 years in and no pass rush. C’mon GM fix it already.

If our 3rd round pick busts, this will make the swing and miss on Quinn that much worse.

There were deals to be had, and we did nothing. Now we need to clean up in the draft. I am hopeful this is the year the Bucs get back on track, but recent history suggests otherwise.

  42. Crockett69 Says:

Good Call Out Bird. Let’s have just an inkling of optimism here.

  43. Mike Johson Says:

Just more excuses for our Bucs. If Licht/Kpetter/Smitty cannot field a winning season this yr..I say Dump the trio right into the Bay!! NEXT!

  44. darin Says:

I didnt read all comments it may have been stated already but the Pats offer came in late, after the seahwaks had agreed to the trade with the eagles. So the seahawks wanted to stand by their word and did. Theres no way the rams were worried about quinn being a buc. Licht didnt beat their offer. No idea if they told licht what more he had to give up, i.e. swapping of 6ths. With these DEs and his throwing away 3rd and 4th round picks every year I have no idea how he didnt give up a 3rd for quinn. The same quinn who had 6 sacks in the last 5 games. Over 25 percent of the bucs whole teams sacks in 5 games. Same guy who had 19 sacks one year. Man I still dont get it. I’m guessing it wont go away this year when quinn is terrorizing qbs. Very curious to see who licht takes this year after all this striking out on great DEs in this suddenly booming trade market.

  45. MadMax Says:

@Johnmeeks, you pick one game where Vita had a bad one, lol. And of course you know how he will transition to the tampa heat in the future since you know so much…smh. We’ll see though, whether or not we draft him, we’ll see.

If we dont land Poe, why not draft Vita?

But I have a feeling we’re gonna try and trade up for Chubb.

  46. MadMax Says:

GMC and next years 1st for Indy’s 3rd and get Chubb!

  47. MadMax Says:

    Indy’s number 3 that is….

  48. Dan Says:

No surprise. Incompetence at each level and position. Look for a lot of talk and no results. Please don’t kid yourselves we don’t have any dynamic playmakers we have a mishmash of past it’s prime players and supposed to be stars. But when they line up against anyone they get exposed.

  49. John meeks Says:

Madmax, check out the Penn state game.let me explain this guy to you vita vea lovers.he is a nose tackle in a 34 defense.he is good at keeping your linebackers clean in a 34 defense.unless Tampa is going to play a 34 defense,he don’t fit!Tampa plays a 43 and they want quick tackles that can get after a qb (booger, wyms, darby).vita is very quick for his size but the problem is he isn’t a pass rusher.he is all power.tampa has to have pressure from all four defensive linemen to have a great defense.mike Smith had huge tackles as dc for Jacksonville but both could rush the passer.vita vea is a run stopping nose tackle that needs to be in a 34 defense.bucs will not pick vita vea!bet that up!!

  50. John meeks Says:

Vita vea had 3 sacks in 2017.yes you heard me correctly!3sacks.

  51. Capt.Tim Says:

Teams trade for the best offer.
    Period.
To believe anything else is ludicrous.
No team thinks that, Trading a DE to the pathetic Bucs, will somehow shift the power structure in the NFC.

The Bucs are horrible, have always been horrible( minus 6 years), and will always be horrible- judging by current decision making and lack of activity.

We are just wasting time this year. Next year will bring a New GM, Head coach, and coordinators.
And yet another 4-5 yeat rebuild.

That about sums up the Bucs.
