CB About To Hit Open Market?

March 10th, 2018

Potential target?

This is something to keep an eye on.

Now Joe isn’t sure if Giants cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie is over the hill or not. He certainly had a bad season in 2017, probably the worst of his career as he was benched by booted Giants had coach Ben McAdoo.

How bad was Cromartie? It was only the second time in his 10-year career the two-time Pro Bolwer didn’t record a pick.

It was such a rough year for Cromartie, the Giants have basically told him if he wants back with the team, he’s going to have to take a significant pay cut, documents Mike Garofolo of NFL Network.

When a team tells a veteran to take a pay cut or else, it’s basically a precursor to the team telling the player, “Make sure to pick up your parting gifts and thank you for participating.”

Again, Joe doesn’t know if Cromartie is toast or not, or has anything left in tank, though he has missed just seven games in his career. But keep this guy’s name in mind in the coming days when the free agency bell rings; it sure seems as if Cromartie’s days in New York are about up.

Well, he’s been mostly healthy and he is 3 years younger than Brent Grimes. No picks last year but 6 the year before.

But his Passes Defended last year were horrible. Excellent hte year before. Could it be the defense in NY just broke down?

  2. NFLNut Says:

I’d rather have Prince Amukamara who will also likely be cheap …

  3. horst Says:

Sherman to the 49ers, what about Prince Amukamara?

  4. Mike Evans GOAT Says:

    Sherman to the 9ers

  5. JimmyJack Says:

Feels like the year to get younger at CB. Cromartie I bet winds up on a contending team.

  6. AlteredEgo Says:

Pretty sure I read in a Sarasota paper ***he*** has said he is retiring….mentioned the number of years in his life he has played the game he loved…

  7. Dirks Great Granpappy Says:

    SF signed Sherman 3/$39m

  8. dmatt Says:

Seems to me like no one wants to come to the Bucs. If this year fails then we need to go big on a coach that will recruit top draft picks, bring n top notch FA, build moral, knows how to coach,n not afraid to go for it on 4th n short. We need to build a reputation where players would sacrifice n leave their team for Buc land.

Seeing reports that’s the Bucs could be really considering trading DJax

    What are your thoughts?

  10. BucEmUp Says:

Bucs need new owners. Players don’t want to here without being over paid at the end of their careers

  11. ATrain Says:

    Bucs Fans Please Heat This:

We will pick up 2nd hand FA to “Show “
Draft as good as we can

    Same Old Same Old

There is no change in the Bucs
    Just like the Rays

    I say it again
    MOVING TO London

  12. Lamarcus Says:

I like DRC. I heard he was being a cancer by example for Apple which lead to his benching

  13. Not there yet Says:

We played him last year and he was irreverent so no thanks.

  14. The Buc Realist Says:

    @bucEmUp

Its been that way since Coach Gruden was fired, why is it an issue for you now????? The Bucs have to over spend 25-30% for free agents since 2009!!!!! I have said that for years, and you are just figuring it out know????? But late than never I guess!!!!!!!

    GO Bucs!!!!!!!!!

  15. DBS Says:

Just watch Total Access and they will tell you the night before where the players will go or should go. And they have been right every time. Non of them mention the Bucs.

  16. Defense Rules Says:

Right now the Bucs have VHIII, Ryan Smith, Elliott & Robinson as CBs. Not exactly a group of CBs to strike fear into the hearts of our opponents. As for our own FAs, we have Grimes, McClain & Jude, any and/or all of whom we might end up re-signing. Several CBs have already gone to other teams (Talib & Sherman) and several others (Trumaine Johnson & Malcolm Butler for instance) are due to hit the FA market shortly. Good assortment of CBs in the draft also. Fortunately we’ve been assured (right Joe) that Licht has a plan, so no need to panic. Yet.

You did not really believe glazers were going to trry and field a respectable team did y ou.

  18. bucfan999 Says:

Joe needs to stop wanting all these aging veterans. The Bucs need to build a new defense for the long haul like we did in the late 90’s, one that will be around at the top of the league for a decade. All the players Joe wants are 10+ year veterans, those are the players a established defense brings in to get them over the hump not the players a rebuilding defense brings in to build around. Come on Joe start fawning over some younger up and coming players not these has beens that have lost a step and are about to go over the cliff.

  19. Rod Munch Says:

I wrote this in the Sherman thread since people are “thankful” he signed with SF, but currently the top corner with a contract on this team is Ryan Smith, who is literally the worst corner in the NFL – Football Outsiders had him ranked as second to last, but I refuse to believe anyone is worse than he was. Anyways the Bucs need 3 corners, assuming VH3 comes back healthy and with his head in tact and can be #4. Ryan Smith should not be on the field, he’s terrible, so basically any corner that isn’t terrible should be under consideration.

  20. Bobby M. Says:

He’s an upgrade for the Bucs and a pop for the local economy when all 22 of his kids and baby mommas move to the area…..

  21. NFLNut Says:

Sherman’s agent FLEECED the 49’ers … I am THRILLED we didn’t give him $13mil per year, especially if the report about us signing the 26 year old EJ Gaines for just $8-9mil per year are true.

  22. The Anomaly Says:

    Pass

  23. Joe Says:

    Sherman’s agent FLEECED the 49’ers

    Sherman negotiated the contract himself.

  24. nick2 Says:

Are we talking about the guy who walked out on the team during the season really? Is it that bad at one buc place? Wow

  25. Piratic Says:

Lol@Bobby M.: That is hilarious, yet sad.

That’s the best laugh so far this morning!

  27. Radman Says:

Makes sense, Florida is the retirement state.

  28. Duke Says:

    Nfl Nut,

Look at the details (ESPN) Not the overall dollar figure. (Which in my opinion is what 99% of fans do along with believing that contracts are all the same.)

He gets up front bonus money along with a 2mil a year salary and It’s incentive laden. Roster bonus, % of downs played, etc etc.
The 13mil is guaranteed if and when He makes the pro bowl.

Basically, Sherman’s contract is extremely favorable for the team in terms of risk v reward. The only way He gets the full reported value is to return to pro bowl form and the pro bowl and play out his contract. This isn’t a big surprise either except for Buc fans who have zero knowledge of contracts or how to negotiate them. Not being able to negotiate is why I think so many but fans opposed signing him. They think total dollars and that number scares them off a player.

  29. Hodad Says:

    I thought he’s contemplating retiring.

  30. mark2001 Says:

    Hope springs eternal.

  31. Easy Says:

He just got released by the Giants. Call the man!!

  32. SOEbuc Says:

Sherman to the 49’ers. Can someone say Carlos Hyde??? No, not likely. We don’t trade or pick up good, needed FA players.

  33. SOEbuc Says:

Give him a one year deal for just a bit over backup average. Grimes is gone and we’re gonna need good CBs along with good CB depth.
