Fitz Is Back

March 8th, 2018

Returning.

Well, Joe guesses Mike Glennon may not be wearing Bucs gear this fall.

Per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the Bucs are bringing back backup quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick.

This is just a smart move all around. With the Uber hassle hanging over the head of America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, who knows how many games he may miss? The Bucs needed a solid backup who could be trusted.

Besides, Fitz showed Joe in three starts filling in for Jameis more than Glennon ever did.

See, the offseason isn’t totally lost.

    Good move

    Good move.

I think Jameis learned a lot watching Fitz play last year.

  3. Marc Says:

The Bucs beat the two worst teams on the schedule in 2017 and it wasn’t BECAUSE of Fitz…. That was some god awful football. We are done if Jamie’s goes down.

    Can Fitz play defense?

Rick Stroud has already confirmed to PFT…

Fitzy is back for more!!! Wise Choice! Like Fitz1

    JBF didn’t have it though….

    Go Bucs!

Check out the time stamp, boys and girls. Long before this article.

    Hmm.

Unless of course Joe continues to edit/filter the posters…comments. Hooray free journalism. Either you break it or you don’t. And when you don’t, you own it.

    Go Bucs!

  6. K_Bassuka Says:

And the bad news keep on coming!

  7. Mike Johnson Says:

Bucs make their 1st good Move!!

  8. DB55 Says:

Lmao, SB here we come. Smh.

I’d sign Case Kenuum at the very least it would stop him from beating us every year. Plus he could compete for the starter job. But we’re just idiot trolls we don’t know nuttin let the experts tell it.

Last yr he signed a 1 year deal for 2 mil and took them to the nfc championship.

Fitz signed a 1 year deal for 3-4 mil and won 2 games.

  9. BuccaneEric75 Says:

Joe, you are correct that Fitz showed more than Glennon. At least Fitz has the balls to throw downfield.

  10. SB Says:

Lol DB…………Foles wants to be a starter and some QB needy team will make him one.

  11. ZK Says:

Fitz, will be the starter by the end of the season!

  12. BuccaneEric75 Says:

DB55, Keemun also played more games and had a really good defense. I do agree that I would take him over Fitz, though.

  13. DB55 Says:

    Sb

There you go another much more worthy player. It’s almost like the Bucs target the worst FAs possible but wtf dik?

  14. JimmyJack Says:

Nice job Bucs…..Now work on Sims and McClain and Evan Smith.

I like Phampile too but he will likely get overpaid somewhere.

  15. JimmyJack Says:

Uuummmmm dude. Just to let you know the Bucs are not on Case Keenum list of teams his agent would even consider for him. Not unless they text him a 100 million number. Or were you joking?

  16. JonBuc Says:

Whew! If for no other reason than to not have to see the giraffe on the sideline. Or worse on the field…one of the original Schiano men so he’s got that going for him….which is nice.

  17. Franka813 Says:

That’s the best offseason move so far

  18. DB55 Says:

Man I’d sign kapernick before bumass fitz. Bucs fans truly do love mediocrity.

    Kenuum
    Kapernick
    Moore
    Bridgewater

All of them are better than Fitz

  19. DB55 Says:

    Jimmy

You need to tell that to Webster and Pickgrin bc they’re under the impression that the Bucs sign all the best FAs. Lmao.

Man I love jbf you guys make me laugh so hard and I’m not always laughing WITH you.

  20. tmaxcon Says:

at least that means the heartless failed dork 8 won’t be back. i guess you have to take you victories when you can as a buc fan.

  21. JimmyJack Says:

DB55…..I read Webster’s points. I do agree with him. We targeted a WR last year. Would you disagree that DJax was the best WR available? I would say he was.

Webster’s point about Vincent Jackson being the best WR years ago……Would you disagree?

I did like the Verner signing when we got him. I like the Gholston signing at the time……I don’t know if those guys were the best options at the time but I believe Webster. I’m sure he did his homework. Of course, I was disappointed by all of those guys.

The other names he mentioned I was never really big on, including Grimes who was a present surprise for me.

I would add J.R. Sweezy to that list. I thought it was a great signing at the time. No Indidnt do my homework, but my guess was that he was considered a top tier free agent lineman at the time. I’m one of the few fans that wants to see him return next year.

But when it comes to Fitz I would easily consider him a top tier backup QB in the league……Without looking I betcha he’s the best backup in our division.

  22. Defense Rules Says:

Awesome news! Jameis needs a mentor like Fitz to help him become a more mature QB going forward.

And JimmyJack, I’m with ya on re-signing Sims, McClain & yes, Evan Smith. But as much as anything, I sure do hope we re-sign McDonald … DLine needs his leadership (plus 5 sacks in 14 games wasn’t that shabby for a rotational DT). Clarke & Glanton also showed some upside at various times last year & given our lack of depth at CB might not be a bad idea to re-sign Jude too (at least to bring those guys to camp & see if they can make the team).

  23. big serious Says:

i think it is just because Fitz knows the Offense

  24. WutdaBucisthis Says:

Just happy MG8 won’t be coming back

  25. El_Buc941 Says:

Love this move.continuity!he showed he can win games and help if Jameis is suspended.atleast he knows the players and playbook.now let’s go get SAQUOAN!!!

  26. martinii Says:

Great, I like Fitz, now go draft JT Barrett at 255 (Compensatory 7th) and watch one of the biggest sleepers in the draft mature into an all-purpose back-up. (Dude could be a hell of a Wildcat.)

  27. Jim Says:

    I like Fitz.

  28. Dooshlarue Says:

    Good move Mr.Licht!
2–1 translates to 66% win percentage and he looked pretty darn comfortable in those 3 games last year.
    Nice deep ball.
Now if he could just stop fumbling the ball for no good reason……
Oh wait…… that’s our franchise QB that does that.

    Hopefully, it’s a 16 game suspension!

Not a JW hater….. I just have eyes.

  29. JimmyJack Says:

Defense Rules…..Good call on McDonald. I didn’t think about him or I would have mentioned.

I also liked the resigning of Conte, Dotson, and Robinson.

Conte takes so much hate and it’s really insane to hate on a depth player who has to be used because our starter(Ward) constantly was caught missing assignments.

Conte comes in and does his job. Yeah, he’s awful in goalline sets and you don’t want him starting 14 games but some fans just seemingly have no idea not realizing that the plan is not to have Conte on the field that much. Conte is a serviceable player with good awareness and nice hands. I only wish we had serviceable players with a bit of playmaking ability at every position.

  30. BucFanFromOh Says:

    Now go get DeMarco Murray!

  31. ScottyinFatAntonio Says:

Not a loss only if he can also play DE.

  32. DB55 Says:

    Jimmy

I’d would have leaned towards Alston Jeffrey or Ted Ginn Jr. heck I would have signed Terrell Pryor prior to paying Djax 13 mil per year.

As for Sweezy better moves were available thru the draft and FA. Ron Leary for example.

  33. DB55 Says:

    Jimmy and Def

Respectfully disagree with everything you just said. In fact you made me throw up in my mouth. Fitz, JUDE? You gotta be kidding, Dotson, Robinson, Evan smith seriously? McClain? 🤢🤮

    Garbage the whole lot!!!

  34. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

Fitz was a safe, pretty inexpensive signing.
Keenum will be a big bucks signing, more for a team w/o a Jameis Winston.
I rather have Fitz than Glennon

  36. LakeLand Says:

    Welcome back to Sucksville..Johnny Unitas

  37. DB55 Says:

Kapernick a much better QBs than Fitz and he’s played in a SB.

  38. JimmyJack Says:

DB55……I agree with you on the DJax signing. I was never behind the whole “Weapons for Winston” parade. Based on results, blowing you free agent money on DJax was a failure…..But it’s hard to make any argument that Jackson was not the best WR in free agency.

I don’t know why your against Fitz. Whose any better? You can’t say Case Keenum. That’s just unrealistic. Don’t know why you don’t like Dotson either. We need a RT and now is not a good season to upgrade that position IMO.

It also seems like you don’t like, what I consider, quality depth players and special teams players. I’m not big on Jude but I’m very comfortable having Evan Smith and McClian on the bench. Both are very capable of doing a good job if needed.

  39. Lamarcus Says:

It’ll be awesome to have Sherman. He doesn’t like mediocrity at all.

  40. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

What you wrote was written as fact when in reality it’s only your opinion. Joe is responsible for what’s written on these pages. -Joe

  41. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    @JimmyJack

I agree about Jackson, especially since we got Godwin…but this year his cap number would be almost completely dead caps space if they cut him, so we have him at least one more year.

I just hope Jameis tells him if he wants to be targeted, he’s gotta earn it by running good routes and getting fewer drops.

  42. John meeks Says:

Well maybe this means that our GM has sobered up and about to get the off season underway!better late than never,I sure hope he has a plan cause a lot of talented defensive lineman have been there for the taking and we came up empty. Glad you are finally sober jason!

  43. DB55 Says:

Film tells a different story jimmy. Evans and Dotson are as done as Hawley. And I’d take Hawley over those two everyday and twice on Sunday.

And as for it’s not the season to upgrade?! That’s the problem it’s ALWAYS the season to upgrade.

Both Ginn and Jeffrey outplayed Djax (probably for the past 2-3 years) and many posters were begging for Jeffrey. I won’t even mention he won a SB.

I’m not sure where you guys get the info for your opinions but it certainly isn’t from watching nfl games that is for sure.

  44. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    BucThis Says
“…check this out!!!!!! Could it be???”

    Sherman…sigh…lol…

Ah, pooperscooper. I called that guy a total punk when they won the superbowl…karma is an itch you can’t scratch.

  45. JimmyJack Says:

DB55…..I can hear you on Kapernick. He is an option. But there are a lot of unknowns there. He hasn’t played in a few years and that’s a concern. He also could be seen as a distraction which many teams don’t like. Then there’s the argument that he’s not a good fit for this offense, they may not consider him for that reason alone.

But if you let Fitz walk in hopes of getting Kapernick then your taking a risk. If Kapernick signs elsewhere then you’re screwed…..We got Fitz now and he’s a known commodity and a good backup. One hole is filled in house with a player who you know can run the offense and will have two years of preparation coming in.

  46. BucEmUp Says:

I love this. Fitz is crucial in my opinion to the development for Jameis. When he filled in for three weeks, you could see how calm and cool he was every single snap, much unlike Winston. But when Jameis came back you could see how much he had calmed down and learned from Fitz. I think this was a really important signing.

Now if they would just fire Mike Smith. Maybe they will sign Sherman, he not afraid to speak his mind and call out this crap soft cover two playing 15 yards deep every single defensive snap!

  47. DB55 Says:

Normally I’d be excited for Sherman but he’s coming of Achilles surgery and he’s getting long in the tooth.

Reminds me too much of Revis paying him 10mil per int. Smh.

  48. ARGH_M8E Says:

    Talib to Rams, lol

  49. BobbyBucs Says:

Talib to the Rams – Noooooooo

  50. DB55 Says:

What’s fitz going to teach jameis? How to suck his whole career? Jeezus sounds like when people were excited about signing Josh McClown. They’re the same player for crying out loud.

  51. DB55 Says:

I bet you grimes goes out to Cali too. I was thinking LA but I’m sure San Fran or Chargers will do just as well.

  52. BigHogHaynes Says:

Kapernick?……They don’t got the balls plus I don’t think he would come to this back wood town!!

  53. horst Says:

    Nice fit for the Rams.

  54. ZK Says:

Talib for a 5th round pick.

  55. JimmyJack Says:

But I firmly disagree with you on Evan Smith. Would I bring the guy back to be my starting Guard? Absolutely not. But give me a guy like him any day for a depth player. The guy played very well for us last year. Yeah, he got exposed at times but you shouldn’t have that guy taking so many snaps.

And when the guy got the chance to take every snap when Phampile went down he played his best football. He can also play multiple positions on the line. Who would you rather have as a depth player on the line?

  56. DB55 Says:

First you needed to sign Alex Mack then Leary. You’d have Ramcyzk Marpet Mack Leary and smith.

  57. JimmyJack Says:

And also DB…..I never argued yo7 the DJax outplayed anybody. The only point that started this argument was that DJax was considered the better talent during the offseason.

It just feels like you are missing the whole point. Jackson got more money for a reason and that reason was that he was considered better the Jeffery at the time. I’ll follow this post with their stats coming into that offseason. Maybe then you will understand

  58. DB55 Says:

Evans was done the second he got stomped on by Suh. Evan’s film is putrid.

  59. 1Gr8Buc Says:

    Talib traded to Rams….. SMDH

  60. DB55 Says:

By whom the Bucs? That’s the point. Lol.

Who said Djax is/was better than Jeffrey’s. I need to know the source please.

  61. 1Gr8Buc Says:

Is there anyone else this team is going to pass on? Is there anyone else this team CAN pass on??? Glazers need to sell the team.

  62. JimmyJack Says:

Coming into that offseason DJax had more yard,TDS, catches, and ypc

    1005/4/56/17.9

    Jeffery

    821/2/52/15.6

There’s also the fact that Jeffery had a long string of seasons with injury’s. That’s a huge factor.

  63. LifeOfABucFan Says:

Give me Tyrann Mathieu…and I will never say a bad word against the Bucs ever again…

  64. JimmyJack Says:

I can agree with yo7 on some of the film on Evan Smith. But the film he put out when Phampile went out was very good work IMO.

Go back and look at those last few games and I don’t think you can call that putrid.

But I keep asking and you won’t answer if you don’t like Evan Smith as a backup then who would you want? I don’t know who is avialable for that role but maybe there’s somebody that will be avialable. I might try to keep Phampile if I’m the Bucs but that may come down to dollars if he can find starters money out there.

  65. ARGH_M8E Says:

Talib for a 5th… We suck

  66. Mike Says:

Would rather have draft pics then washed up players – reason they are going for late round pics. What I don’t understand is why we can’t ever get picks before just cutting players.

  67. DanBucsFan Says:

Fitz is solid backup. Im not even surprised or mad about Talib to Rams, not bcuz I didnt want Talib, but I knew we wouldn’t trade for him. Not gonna get excited for anyone to come here anymore, clearly Licht is not trying to add players that will help win in 2018. I also believe Grimes will go elsewhere as well, thanks to Miko for keeping it real at least with the fanbas.

  68. Bucballbaby84 Says:

Talib For a fifth round pick! Yo I have had Jason Lichts back since day 1 but I’m done! Bucs have plenty of money to take on his salary. I wish there was a Jason Licht jersey cause I’d burn that in a second!

  69. JimmyJack Says:

Ok DB55, i looked up past articles and you were right that they had Jeffery labeled as a higher FA then DJax. He was a few spots higher on nfl.com.

I may have taken Webster’s point to the wrong direction but I’ll still agree with him that DJax was a top tier FA. So no not the best

  70. JimmyJack Says:

And I’ll agree with you that it was the Bucs who wanted DJax above, probably, most free agents that offseason. I think it’s pretty obvisous in the fan base that
They wanted a WR who could run a 4.3 forty or whatever him actual time is.

  71. DB55 Says:

    Jimmy

I like Tmax am never wrong. Lololol. Jk but not really.

I answered the Evans depth question. It’s complicated:
First you needed to sign Alex Mack then Leary. You’d have Ramcyzk Marpet Mack Leary and smith.

But to keep it simple I liked Josh Allen at center and guard over Evans.

  72. DB55 Says:

They wanted a WR who could run a 4.3 forty or whatever him actual time is.
    ———–
In that case you sign Ginn Jr for 3y 11million. Not Djax for 3xs that amount. And of course Ginn outperformed Djax too.

  73. BetterBuccinBelieveIt Says:

[If this site is so horrible, why visit? No one is forcing you to read Joe. — Joe.]

  74. JimmyJack Says:

Well personally I would not want Ginn. The guy got into a SuperBowl and had an absolutely awful game. He choked in his biggest game.

But like I said I was never behind the whole weapons for Winston crap. My opinion on the matter was the team got way to cocky off a 9-7 season. If they knew what they were doing they would have realized when we got a chance to play for the playoffs we were physically dominated against the Cowboys. Both lines got manhandled in that game.

Physicality is what wins in this league and was what we were lacking. Instead of beefing up they went for flash with DJax. Was a horrible team assetment……By Licht first, Dirk second. Then this effing coach comes out saying he wants a badass football team. He can blow that mantra right out his a-hole.

  75. BrianBucs Says:

Good call to bring Fitz back since last year he was the only Buc QB with a winning record

  76. DB55 Says:

    Jimmy

Agreed! But again it was the TB media (so called experts) that started the whole weapons for Winston. He had a 1000 wr and his TE led the league in TDs.

But again the media thinks GMC is a hof DT so no need to improve the dline I guess.

I blame the FL public school system.

  77. JimmyJack Says:

DB55…..Of course I don’t know and it’s my conspiracy theory but it really seems like the media has too much of an influence over this team. You’re right, the media(mostly AM radio for me) was calling out weapons for Winston.

They were also behind getting rid of the last coach. And I know everybody hates that guy but I feel quite certain this defense would have more pieces right now then GMC LVD and Kwon. And there’s no way we waste our free agent money on Djax either.

Now the media has been backing Dirk all season and here he is. I have no idea what they like about this unprepared undisciplined soft effortless team that has no identity but I hope their right about this guy but I don’t see it.

BTW, hanging a billboard to fire an entire staff of coaches was one of the most lowbrow moves I never saw. Losing sucks and is embarassing but, to me, that almost makes me more embarrassed to be a Buc fan……..Yeah, yeah it worked and they got all the coach’s fired. We’ve been just as bad since then and the guy likely would have been fired without the billboard. Classy should not apply on the football field…..but well done with making a poor coach who was a good dude look like a toolbar.

    ***END RANT***

  78. DayOnePaul Says:

How bout working on some free agents that will make us better, instead of the way we were last year? And the year before? And the year before?

  79. BuccLuck Says:

FITZMAGIC IS BACK BABY!!!! BBB! Bring Back the Beard!

  80. NFLNut Says:

Fine by me … but what’s the contract details?

  81. denjoe Says:

    WGAF?

  82. Bucsfanman Says:

DB55- Your point is valid. There ARE better options out there. The only catch might be that they are afraid of tinkering with Jameis confidence. Those other guys MIGHT actually be better QBs overall. And before you start mounting your defense for Jameis everybody, tell me what he has done outside of breaking a couple of useless, trivial records? If your head is not in the sand, you might want to give it a pause.

  83. Mike Johnson Says:

This just outstanding! But to change the subject…Can Fitz pass Rush? Can he stop a team on 3rd and 20 from making 22 yards on 3rd down? Let Fitz wear the Binoculars up in the pressbox and get Smitty’s sorry A.. on the field with his troops!!
