Bucs Drop Starter Money On Their Run Stuffer

March 14th, 2018

Time to lose the Ndamukong Suh fantasy

It’s big money, Chris Baker money, for new Buccaneers defensive tackle Beau Allen, who played a lot but wasn’t a starter last season in Philly.

The details were served up by the Twitter feed of noted Eagles insider and ESPN analyst Adam Caplan. (See below)

That’s a lot of jack for a young run stuffer, a guy with two career sacks. But hey, Allen is new blood, young blood and winning blood from the NFL’s No. 1–ranked run defense.

Time to lose those Ndamukong Suh fantasies.

The Bucs are now much better against the run. Upgrade in the bank. And run defense was a problem last season.

Could have had Carlos Hyde for that kind of money.

    -Pissed off Bucs fan

  2. Nybucsfan Says:

    Dumb

  3. JJ Says:

    🤦‍♀️

  4. GhostofSchiano Says:

I can be okay with this as long as SUH does not sign with another NFC south team.

  5. Todd Says:

Another Costco shopping move by our gm hoping he is great

  6. Todd Says:

Watch suh sign with the falcons

  7. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

He will fit right into Jim Schwartz defense next year

  8. JJgoodtimes Says:

    Carlos Hyde is a bum

  9. Blake_Bucsfan Says:

We passed on Sheldon Richardson, Dontari Poe, Bennie Logan, and Suh… To give a back up 5 million a season……………………..

  10. AlteredEgo Says:

I am OK with the young DT….now on to Jensen the center

  11. Bucsfan951 Says:

Another career back up that’ll be forced into a starting role. Licht and his dumpster diving ways! You can’t make this ish up.

  12. Jeffbuc Says:

Wtf I am just hating football more and more with every passing day. Last two days just refreshing my phone waiting for something. Then finally happens and this is it. Overpay for a backup dt. He couldn’t start for the eagles in 4 years. But we think he is magically going to get better in year 5 with us. We would have been better to draft a dr in the 6th and 7th then pay this kind of money. We have no chance of getting anybody if we have to pay 5million a year to a backup. I want to go burn all my bucs clothes and that would be a big bonfire. Go rip the bucs tag off my vehicles and get a rainbow tag. Cause believing this team will ever win is a fairy tale. I was ok with the signing when I thought it would be a 3 year 7.5 million contract 15 that’s insane.

  13. LakeLand Says:

Jason Licht signed him to be their starting NT.

  14. Todd Says:

I agree a good fit for Jim Schwartz next year here

  15. Todd Says:

Another baker bust to be cut next year

  16. 813bucboi Says:

    @todd @dusthty

    bingo!!!!!

SUH will sign with the falcons or panthers……Schwartz could be coaching a familiar face next year……

    no urgency…..no excuse

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!

  17. Cover Deuce Says:

It’s hard to take you calling it “Big money,” seriously before we even know how the guarantees are structured. If he’s got $10 mil guaranteed, then yeah, that’s pretty big money for a pretty small fish. But if the guarantees total out to between $5-8 mil, that’s about on par with decent run stuffers who you expect to start, and not exactly what I’d call huge money in an NFL where the salary cap is just south of $180 million.

  18. Jeffbuc Says:

Fire Licht right now please. Before his press conference tomorrow patting his back on the Tandy resigning and talking up this defense tackle as the next all pro.

  19. LouisFriend Says:

Suh is a much more talented version of Chris Baker, with his ‘it don’t matter’ personality, except he doesn’t smile or play a different position than McCoy does. Break the bank for him? Nope.

  20. Todd Says:

Wait till you guys see Jensen the contract we will have to pay him this will look like chump change

  21. Todd Says:

Omg we signed another jets kicker

  22. rrsrq Says:

this is so freaking strange that this teams thinks they were that close last year, that has to be the only illogical way they are thinking and sitting waiting on players to fall to them while the other teams not only in the division but the conference get better.

  23. Defense Rules Says:

Big money? Chris Baker money? Not impressed Joe. Clinton McDonald had FIVE sacks in 14 games last year, while Beau Allen, our ‘run-stuffing’ replacement for Baker, has a grand total of TWO sacks in FOUR years (McDonald has 13.5 sacks in those same 4 yrs). And wow, it only cost us $5 mil a year to land Allen, while McDonald remains unsigned. What’d Big Mac get last year? $3 mil or something like that. Nope, not impressed.

  24. Rod Munch Says:

    Licht’s gonna Licht…

  25. Jeffbuc Says:

You have to search to even find out about this signing. It’s such a great signing for us it isn’t on any of the big nfl websites. But I’m sure pro football will have one shortly when they see the contract price wondering what Licht was thinking.

  26. firethecannons Says:

bucs are absolutely destined to continue being less than mediocre–done

  27. LakeLand Says:

He’s good against the run, but I have one question

Why would a team run the ball against the 32nd ranked pass defense
The 32nd ranked defense in sacks

    What good is a $15 million run-stuffer
When teams will be throwing for 400 yards a game against this defense

  28. Rod Munch Says:

Licht signs another backup player to backup money yet will expect starter results… We’ve seen this story before.

  29. 813bucboi Says:

I thought we already have an back up DT/NT on the roster….stevie t……guess they don’t want to spend time developing the young man……

    no urgency…..no excuse

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!!

  30. Eric Says:

    Zero excitement over this move.

  31. Pa Privateer Says:

We were in need of a NT/run stuffing DT, hopefully it works out.

I never thought I would say it, but I want to see Richardson or Suh since all the DEs are gone.

Seriously, throw 15 mil at Suh and let’s just attempt to fix the pass rush

  32. THECHADxxx Says:

Yes, lets keep working for depth on day one of free agency (face down to desk)

  33. El_Buc941 Says:

Joe I’m still waiting for those big splash moves Licht promised

  34. Bird Says:

    don’t understand this one.

1st year probably only guaranteed but never heard of this dude. Apparently he is hard working guy and teammates love him (so he is not Chris baker)

    But damn.

  35. c-spann Says:

It’s gettin harder and harder trying to support this team. As a fan it is not rocket science! We should have been loading up on pass rushers. Also need 2 CBs and a saftey. You cant always count on the draft to hit. At least FAs are a proven commodity. I see other teams getting better and seeing this FO standing pat. I about to pull my eye brows out!

  36. 813bucboi Says:

    LAKELAND

    BINGO!!!!!….LMAO…..

why run the ball when you play a team with no pass rush and CB’s playing 15yards off the WR…..lol…..

    no urgency…..no excuse

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!

  37. Skeeter Johnson Says:

How about signing a more versatile DT, one who can play more than two downs: S. Richardson, D. Poe, N. Suh, etc. At least one of these guys would require a double team w the ability to beat it or open up for other players.

  38. Rod Munch Says:

    Rotoworld says this….
“A 2014 seventh-round pick, Allen has been a solid rotational option the last two seasons, but he is likely looking for more playing time and money than the Eagles can offer. Allen could end up being one of the better bargain signings this free agency period.”

But then again Rotoworld said this last year…
“Baker was a defensive end with Washington, but he will likely start at defensive tackle next to Gerald McCoy in Tampa Bay. It is a good signing for an improving defensive line.” …and…. “Baker would play next to Gerald McCoy and give the Bucs one of the NFL’s most intimidating interior fronts.”

  39. Eric Says:

You could get a guy like this after the final roster cuts.

  40. Richbucsfan Says:

When you have the chance to get better and don’t either you’re a fool or are convinced or deluded that you’re better than you are. Next December the Bucs will beaten and worn down just as they were this season. Licht and Koetter are deluded believing this team is close. Actually L&K are the ones close…close to the unemployment line…and, it’s on them.

The fan base needed a splash signing to inject hope. These signings only added to the angst.

  41. Buccaneer scotty Says:

10 million dollars plus a yr. Is starter money not 5 it’s not 1985 lmao

  42. Blake_Bucsfan Says:

3 years 15 million is the EXACT same contract the BROWNS got Carlos Hyde for.

What in the actual F is Jason Licht free basing on street corners and back alleys to make these monumentally moronic decisions?

  43. Kalind Says:

I agree, all this did was depress me. I don’t see a plan. I see resignation. Jensen will be nice, but unless they sign two of these CBS and make a trade for a DE (Fowler?) this defense is going to hold down the entire team…again. I’m still pissed Smith is the DC. I mean,..we were 5-11, did the FO forget that? They think we went 9-7 still??

  44. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I would not call $5m for a DT to be starter money.

  45. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Per year I mean.

  46. Blake_Bucsfan Says:

Bonzai. We gave Chris Baker 6 million a season to be a starter last year. Licht is going to try and pass this guy off like he’s something special.

  47. NbJoker Says:

Stupid move. SUH IS 5 times better than allen. Each day, im getting pissed off when there’s nothing done to improve defense. But, it’s more likely Bucs will draft He’s, if sign C Ryan Jensen and move Marpet back to guard. If that happens, then I’m ok as long as SUH signs out at west coast.

  48. AlteredEgo Says:

But then again Rotoworld said this last year…
“Baker was a defensive end with Washington, but he will likely start at defensive tackle next to Gerald McCoy in Tampa Bay. It is a good signing for an improving defensive line.” …and…. “Baker would play next to Gerald McCoy and give the Bucs one of the NFL’s most …imitating… interior fronts.”

  49. Issic haggins Says:

This has Mike Smith written all over it he had success at Jacksonville but continually tried without success in Atlanta and is doing the same here. He had to Mammoth super talented 6 foot seven defensive tackles in Jacksonville and has constantly ever since been trying to find Run stoppers , the guys in Jacksonville were not only run Stuffers they were both all pro talents. Why would you not pay Sheldon Richardson 10 to 15,000,000 instead, he has double or triple the tackles and four or five times the sa cks I just don’t get Mike Smith 1974 logic. And this is Atlanta Falcons nepotism at its finest And Licht is now part of the family.

Please glazers step in and fire Mike Smith, Your GM and coach are both his puppets

  50. Joeypoppems Says:

I dont hate the deal. They needed NT depth. They now need a starting NT.

  51. Rod Munch Says:

I said the same thing last year about Baker when people called him a huge bust – I pointed out he was making backup money at $5m/year – yet Licht and the team expected starter results. You can’t be a huge bust if you’re making backup money and can be cut for no cap hit the following year. It was a Licht trying to get a starter on the cheap, which he does year after year after year and I don’t think it’s ever worked out.

  52. NbJoker Says:

Stupid move. SUH IS 5 times better than allen. Each day, im getting pissed off when there’s nothing done to improve defense. But, it’s more likely Bucs will draft Vea only if sign C Ryan Jensen and move Marpet back to guard. If that happens, then I’m ok as long as SUH signs out at west coast.

  53. Waterboy Says:

Another backup for the 32nd defense in the league. Smh

  54. Waterboy Says:

Wilkerson is better and made the same amount per year.

  55. Rod Munch Says:

The Cowboys are talking to Suh?

How is that possible, they are right at the limit of the cap – aren’t they worried about being in salary cap hell and not being able to sign guys 4 years from now? Makes no sense.

  56. Rod Munch Says:

Waterboy – Wilkerson signed for much less than I thought, I can’t believe he only got a deal for that little. The Bucs should have absolutely tried to get him and pay him more than that – they’re paying Gholston $7m.

  57. richbucsfan Says:

stupid move…they’ve distanced themselves from the fan base and I really don’t think they even know it.

  58. tmaxcon Says:

    Rod Munch

what have been telling everyone for weeks… FEAR LOSING NOT THE SALARY CAP!!!!

managing the cap is just another phase of the game. worry about talent first then money. the cap is like the national debt it’s easily manipulated

  59. Buc4life Says:

I give up. Just flustered! Bucs won’t get my $4000 for 5 season ticket seats. They are not trying to build a winning team. Seem like the Rays of football.

  60. Gman Says:

    Much better? Whatever…

  61. ClwJB Says:

The new DL coach wanted the heart and motor of this younger guy…you MUST rotate DT in this league, we need 2 more starter-level DT anyway,

probably not resigning CMac- while I like him, too much time on the trainers table year after year and he is on the wrong side of 30..

look for another backup/rotational at DT signed later in FA, and a rookie somewhere in the draft…

  62. Skeeter Johnson Says:

Soooooo we sign Philly’s backup DT but what did the reigning SB champs do? Did they just roll with their dominate D-line? Hell no, they went out and traded for a player w a chip on his shoulder, who will most certainly ring up double digits sacks next year playing amongst that line. Take notes TB FO. There are big names out there that can really help us get after three pro bowl and former super bowl qbs, twice a year. Stop signing back ups and kickers. I get it, Johnson was a bad signing a few years ago but damn. We need TALENT in the trenches. Sign talent, then draft depth. We can’t keep hoping to draft 3 or 4 starters every year.

  63. TvD head ball coach Says:

This is why Licht sucks at free agency. No one was going to pay this guy that kind of money. Dumb dumb dumb!

  64. K_Bassuka Says:

Holy crap, this bum shouldn’t command anything over a million. Licht it’s messing up things, time for him to go. 🤦‍♂️

  65. webster Says:

5 mil a year is not starter money for dlineman. Its rotational money.

  66. Lord Cornelius Says:

hm. This smells of the Sweezy deal when I thought “really?” about the price

Would have thought he’d have gone for $1.5-3 mill per not $5…

So much for a “value” signing. Robert Quinn for a 4th rounder and $12 mill is a steal compared to this.

I’m ok with not spending it on the RBs.. Hyde is not a game changer imo – more like another Peyton Barber. Has injury history/wear n tear already too. McKinnon is a 3rd down back. No thanks for anything over $3mill for that.

But still I’m not liking this deal at all. Would rather have Trumaine Johnson at $15 mill than 3 guys the equivalent of this. You can draft NTs in the mid rounds and this draft has quite a few good ones

  67. JonBuc Says:

I think I’d have preferred Brad Culpepper at 50 years old and weighing in around 205. Especially if he re-grew the dreads.

  68. Rod Munch Says:

Spotrac seems to have updated cap info, but some of these numbers don’t match up with what I’ve read elsewhere…

First, they say Grimes only got $7m, not $10m, if true the Bucs got a deal there considering what corners are going for.

They also say Fitz only got $3.3m, which is basically what he got last year. When McCown gets $10m, that seems like a huge bargain.

Assuming their numbers are correct the Bucs have $47m in cap space before this signing. So figure $5m for him and lets just say $10m for rookies (giving slack for possible trades) the Bucs still have $32m to spend.

The Bucs are currently 8th in cap space.

Meanwhile the Cowboys are talking to Suh and are at $-1.7m…

  69. JimmyJack Says:

Beau Allen….I don’t know enough about the man. Don’t get me wrong, I am not happy about this team making no big move in free agency but don’t be blinded with hate about why they made this move.

If you can remember back to this line last year they were constantly gassed and sucking wind late in games. Now you look at Philly and their line was ferocious. A part of that was more talent but a part was keeping their guys fresh with a lot of rotating. Hopefully this will be a piece we plan on using to copy that mold.

Look, our line needed to be addressed and there wasnt one guy who was going to come in here and turn it into a powerhouse overnight. If this guy is a solid player and you can get, say, three more guys who can come in and play solid football in a rotation it could be the best solution for now.

I’ll be intrested to see who else they bring in on the line. It may be wisest to make a significant upgrade elsewhere on the team. Where the talent is deeper and younger. That’s why they ar3 bringing in Jensen.

  70. Eric Says:

    Hot garbage

  71. SteveK Says:

    We need a splash signing!

    Jenson, Suh, or Richardson!

  72. JimmyJack Says:

Bassuka…..Sounds like you’ve seen Beau Allen quite a bit since you’re calling him a bum. Mind sharing what you know?

  73. JimmyJack Says:

    Eric….Tell me why?

  74. SteveK Says:

I like the Allen signing. Dude seems to be huge and nasty. We need that.

Now give me a pass rusher and a big ugly on the OLine.

  75. JimmyJack Says:

I’ll never understand why everybody gets worried about how much a guy makes. It just makes no sense.

I could understand if we had no cap room and money affected the teams decisions but that is not the case. We have plenty of money.

Can somebody explain to me why it bothers you?

  76. AKick'nTheBucNuts Says:

This signing is like being Charlie Brown when Lucy pulls the ball away.

  77. SteveK Says:

    JimmyJack,

I hear ya! I’m bothered we still have zeronpass rush and a ton of cap space. There were players to be had, but Licht balked.

  78. Issic haggins Says:

Brentson Buckners Wife : Im glad you’re home honey how was your day at work !!!

Buckner : terrible I’ve made a big mistake , quick pack your bags there’s a delusional cult at 1 Buck Place I resigned . Mike Smith is speaking in tongue’s and he’s teaching dirk and Jason how. I informed them free agency had started and they asked me if I knew pig Latin .Quick let’s get packed !!!

  79. Mike Johnson Says:

They are giving this backup 5 mil a year?? Donte Poe is much better. But then again..Its a BucLife baby!! I can’t wait for the 3 Loseateers to be fired in 2019.

  80. LifeOfABucFan Says:

So now Suh is meeting with the Saints? Just saw it..it’ll come back and bite us in the be—hind…

  81. PistolPete Says:

I was excited by last years FA signings, they stunk.
Feels like Jason is over-correcting and afraid to sign anyone.
Need to be in the middle of the road.
We need a starting defensive and offensive lineman in free agency.
    Pistol

  82. SteveK Says:

Calais Campbell, Robert Quinn, Michael Bennett, Muhammad Wilkerson. Two of those beasts should be Bucs, but no, we are allergic to a pass rush!

  83. LakeLand Says:

The Colts signed DE Denico Autry, 3 years $ 17.8 million

  84. BucEmUp Says:

I hope they get Jensen and why not kick the fires on Frank Gore

  85. Atrain4047 Says:

So we paid a good amount of money for another run stuffer who doesn’t get to the quarterback. Money well spent

  86. Not there yet Says:

5 mil a year is a lot of money? You’ve been saying for weeks go get the guy you need that you don’t care what it costs. That price wouldn’t stop them from getting Suh. If it makes your team better why would it? We need a healthy rotation as much as this defense saw the field last year. If they think one vet will shore up the run defense then they didn’t learn from last year, Baker and McDonald are done there are still upgrades to make

  87. SteveK Says:

I would love old man frank gore. What a beast! Why the hell not. What a competitor!

  88. I'm tired and 87 is right Says:

Is tomorrow our last day to cancel our tickets for the season?

  89. NFLNut Says:

So, I take it, STEVIE T is a lost cause as we just signed TWO run-stuffing DTs in Beau and Mitch Unrein, yes?

  90. Kansas95Buc Says:

In the words of Troy Aikman who covered one of our games “I just don’t understand” (fun fact, those were his exacts words to describe the Bucs)

  91. Richbucsfan Says:

What a wasted opportunity. Smh in total disgust

  92. NFLNut Says:

    **********************

Okay, so Unrein is a run-stopping DE … like Gholston

So, as it stands we have:

    DE: Ayers/Spence/Russell
    DT: GMC/ROOKIE?
    DT: Beau/StevieT
    DE: Gholston/Unrein/ROOKIE?

If we get Bradley Chubb in the 1st and Taven Bryant/Maurice Hurst in the 2nd or Derrick Nnandi/Harrison Phillips in the 3rd we will have a pretty good rotation … but that’s a big if as we could end up with rookies like Josh Sweat in the 4th and Kendrick Norton in the 5th and be towards the bottom of the league in regards to a defensive line rotation again …

    *******************

  93. horst Says:

Thought we would have purchased a decent running back, there are a few tight ends available.

  94. Bobby M. Says:

Everyone is debating whether Suh can play beside my McCoy….I would let Suh have McCoy’s position and let McCoy play as a defensive end similar to Reggie White or Peppers. Let him float along the line on early downs….Spence isnt a run stopper by any means and i have more faith in McCoy producing in 1 on 1 match ups then any defensive end we currently have.

I’ve literally never seen a team afraid to have too much talent on the d-line like i have with the Bucs. All we hear about is how McCoy is getting double teamed….put him 1 on 1 on the outside and let him loose. He cant be worse then Gholston or Ayers and i would bet he puts up better numbers then Spence AND McCoy can actually stop the run.

  95. NFLNut Says:

    Horst,

The one position we do NOT need help at is TE … with OJ/Brate/Auclair we’re all set.

  96. FireJasonLicht Says:

Typical Jason Licht move. I love it, he is pretty much insuring his firing at the end of the season. 1 Happy Bucs Fan!!!

  97. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Blake_Bucsfan Says
“Bonzai. We gave Chris Baker 6 million a season to be a starter last year. Licht is going to try and pass this guy off like he’s something special.”

And clearly he didn’t last as a starter. This, on top of the Unrean signing…obvious depth.

The pass rush will be addressed in the draft.

  98. Kansas95Buc Says:

    @BobbyM

McCoy isn’t playing DE, said it himself

  99. bucs_365 Says:

5 million is not a lot to pay for a decent part time starter / rotational defensive lineman in free agency. So, now you have people complaining about overpaying the guy… But everybody is happy to overpay if it’s the guy they want or a big name… Free agency brings out the whiniest of whiny crybaby Bucs fans.

  100. Trubucfan22 Says:

Every eagles fan loved this guy. And Eagles fans are hard to please. If they think he is good, I’m ok with giving him a shot. Young guy that is known as a grinder and has great character to go with his nastiness. What is there not to like? Because you never heard his name before? You people are so desperate for big names. You care nothing about talent. Just names. Pathetic.

  101. TOM Says:

McDonald should have been signed by now. This Bucs organization really sucks. Fans should boycot the games.

  102. Reach87 Says:

Bucs_365…agree. The FA season just started as well…Go Bucs!

  103. Capt.Tim Says:

    Yay.
We signed a 3rd string DT
    And another Jets kicker.

    Way to dominate, Licht

  104. ATrain Says:

McCoy won’t play next to Suh

    Bucs won’t pay for him

We only take bench players in FA

Last year same thing in FA

So JOE do you know WHY the Bucs are choosing this route????

  105. denjoe Says:

WTF weren’t we 5-11? Is everybody on crazy pills overthere?

  106. THETRUTH Says:

We are no better than last year on the run defense, till this guy performs “C” class FA give you “C” class football.. go get impact player and enough with these HOPEFULLY players

  107. destinjohnny Says:

when you make an okay not great scout the gm….
these are the moves u get

  108. Mo_Downs Says:

    OK, now I get it.

    Bucs move to London

    Chargers move to TB

Little fish in a big pond..?

    Problem solved..!!

  109. Jonzey17 Says:

We need to sign Ryan Jensen for center, DE Wilkerson, got in the draft 1st rd. (S) James, 2nd RB Sony or Penny, 3rd CB
