Bucs Kicker Circus Has A New Act

March 14th, 2018

Competition on the way

It seems the guy who replaced Nick Foles last year on the Jets roster, is now the guy who will replace Nick Foles on the Bucs roster.

You can’t make this stuff up.

Yes, the Bucs have kicker Patrick Murray, who was among the worst in the NFL last season at kickoffs and field goals of 50+ yards. Murray did a great job stabilizing the position after the Roberto Aguayo-Folk disaster. But the Bucs certainly can do better.

Per the Twittering of Tampa Bay Times reporter Greg Auman, the Bucs are poised to sign kicker Chandler Catanzaro. He was perfect on extra points last year, but was perfect from 50+ (2-for-2), though he was a shaky 12-for-17 from 40 to 49 yards.

Catanzaro had strong 2014 and 2015 seasons with the Cardinals before tanking in 2016.

Joe suspects he’ll be competition for Murray, not gifted a job.

Let the kicking games begin.

    Nick Folk. šŸ˜‰

  2. Joeypoppems Says:

Competition is needed. He was a mess in Arizona tho.

  3. Chris Says:

    Ha ha ha ha.

  4. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

what a clown show this team is

  5. Blake_Bucsfan Says:

Stick with Pat Murray. Jason Licht is about worse at evaluating kickers than he is at signing free agents.

If it’s his instinct to bring this guy in to replace Murray, don’t.

  6. Hunter Says:

He was 29-29 kicking extra points last year . Where did you get 5 missed from?

  7. Todd Says:

Just give the job to Murray Jason what the heck are you doing you know what you have in Murray

  8. Nybucsfan Says:

I think our GM is being paid by the three other NFC south teams to blow it.

  9. William Says:

29/29 on XPs last year Joe

  10. AlteredEgo Says:

Yawn…..wake me up when the Bucs sign Jensen….

  11. El_Buc941 Says:

Your kidding me right?!what’s the point of addressing the kicking position if WE CANT SCORE AT ALL!!!!

  12. JayBucBoi Says:

Missed 5 field goal attempts, not extra points.

  13. Dewey Selmon Says:

    Day drinking Joe? lol

  14. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Last year, this guy was only 1% better than Murray in field goals made.

Not really a step up. At least Murray was consistent. Ah well, close to the same age. We’ll see.

Personally, I would rather have kept it just Murray and then try out a couple drafted guys for the practice squad.

  15. 813bucboi Says:

LOL…..this just keeps getting better and better…..lol…..so we sign our players who most believe are back ups…..sign a back up DT to be a starter and now we’re going to sign a kicker……

I guess licht hasn’t learned from signing George Johnson…..

    no urgency…..no excuse

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!

  16. Eric Says:

    Please stop.

  17. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Error in the article, Joe. He made all his extra points and missed 5 FGs. In comparison, Murray only missed 4 FGs…but played in fewer games.

  18. Rod Munch Says:

All I know about Catanzaro is that Cardinal fans hated him – despite his stats they viewed him as a choke artist. Also 5 missed XP’s? Wow, Roberto missed 2 and people wanted him lynched.

Not sure about this signing, but if it’s truly just an open competition then bring in as many guys that you can.

  19. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    813bucboi Says:
“..sign a back up DT to be a starter…”

    Big assumption.

  20. Rod Munch Says:

Bonzai – I think Joe was looking at prior years, he did in fact miss 5 XP’s in Arizona one year, then missed 4 XP’s the next year, but did get them all last year. Looking at the stat sheet I can see why the Cardinal fans hated him, 9 XP’s missed in 2 years… that’s really terrible.

  21. AlteredEgo Says:

tmax says…. Murray was brought in to line up behind McCoy and kick him in the azz at the snap….

  22. SKBucsFan Says:

There is always the draft. Should still be a kicker on the board at 7

    Would anyone really be surprised?

  23. Lamarcus Says:

Didn’t this guy blow a game vs Seattle when he was with the Cards??

    Cancelling Sunday ticket for sure

  24. DB55 Says:

    Surely you can’t be serious.

I am serious and don’t call me surely.

  25. El_Buc941 Says:

Apparently the Bucs have interest in Adrian Clayborne Joe

  26. LakeLand Says:

When will Jason Licht sign a long snapper?

  27. Walter Says:

If they sign Clayborn…………. there isnā€™t even words to fully describe how embarrassing that is……

  28. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Speaking for Pablo

“For a brief moment, Pablo became excited thinking the Bucs had finally brought in an Hispanc player…(Catanzaro)……could be….or maybe Italian…but the dude is an Episcopalian.. NO WAY JOSE!!!. Pablo thinks the Bucs are done with Hispanic kickers.”

  29. JimmyJack Says:

Iā€™m too tired to rage today. After not making any significant moves yesterday I went on hunger strike that wonā€™t end until they make a significant signing. Signing a camp kicker and a rotational DT donā€™t count.

Iā€™m so darn hungry right now. Havenā€™t eaten in 28 hours. If Jensen leaves without a contract Iā€™m going to cry. PHUCK you Bucs!! I guess a glimmer of hope is too much to ask for.

  30. OneBucPerson Says:

We should’ve signed him last year when we was first available, but oh well. At least we can correct that mistake now.

  31. SB Says:

Hey Pablo………Episcopalian has noting to do with Ethnicity. It is a denomination of Religion.

  32. GhostofSchiano Says:

    alteredego

    that was funny

  33. Gman Says:

    He stinks…try again

  34. Rod Munch Says:

JimmyJack – Drink some cranberry juice and take a warm bath, it should help you.

  35. ClwJB Says:

84% career on FG, 94.4% career on XP over 4 full seasons, long of 60 yds and another at 57 yds – strong leg, but erratic…dont we already have one of those?

  36. Das yhard Says:

Life of the Bucs. WE DO IT TWICE FOR A BIGGER PRICE!!

  37. TrollSlayer Says:

jenna laine just reported on twitter that ryan jensen is in tampa visiting this very moment

  38. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @SB

    Speaking for Pablo

“TBBF told Pablo that he’s been an Episcopalian for over 60 years and has never seen anyone looking even close to Pablo…..The last time Pablo checked most of Pablo’s type are Catholic…….But where SB lives, perhaps there are a bunch of Episcopal Hombres…..”

  39. JonBuc Says:

Kicking excellence continues with the signing of ā€œChrisā€ Chandler Cantanzaro. Heā€™s shakey, unclutch and has bounced around a lot. Heā€™s perfect!

  40. JJV Says:

OK so far we got a new kicker and Barry Allen’s brother. Won’t sell tickets. But I still say sign the Sumo Wrestler Figure Skater. Instant fan favorite would fill the stadium.

  41. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Let’s just bring back Brenza for long FGs & kickoffs…..we could carry 2 kickers like some other teams……..Brenza is also a punter so he could be an emergency punter. I suspect we could get him really cheap.
We could free up a roster spot by getting rid of the ridiculous third QB….a roster spot waste for two years now.

  42. Blake_Bucsfan Says:

    @Tbbf

Did you just… you didn’t… you couldn’t have… Could you have? No, I’m sure of it. There’s no way you just suggested that the Bucs bring back Ol’ clubfoot Kyle Brindza.

  43. miken Says:

Wait, so you can get a good kicker without using multiple draft pick? Damn, who knew?

  44. AKick'nTheBucNuts Says:

    Wow! I’m excited.

  45. Eric Says:

Dirk already said kickers need to make kicks.

    Pure genius.

  46. Mike Johnson Says:

I thought my wife’s musical selection for our evening glass of Cabernet was appropriate….. Ole Frank Sinatra singin……SEND IN THE CLOWNS.

  47. Eric Says:

    #BOYCOTTtheBucs

  48. cmurda Says:

Ooooh kickers are coming to town. This is exciting. I mean not as exciting as the frenzy of huge splash signings we’ve made, but exciting nonetheless.

  49. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Bucs sign Suh for 3 years, $42m…

  50. First Down Tampa Bay Says:

There are three certains in life:

Death, Taxes, and the inability of the Bucs to find a Kicker.

  51. JimmyJack Says:

Rod that does not sound like very masculine advice.

  52. ScottyinFatAntonio Says:

    LOL….yea right

  53. John meeks Says:

This guy was solid until last year, they say it was his technique. Has a strong leg, kicked a 60 harder last year.should be a good battle for murray.

  54. Blake_Bucsfan Says:

Bonzai whats the source on that?

  55. Rrsrq Says:

The Bucs are like the White House, you canā€™t make this stuff up, expect the unexpected.

  56. Joeypoppems Says:

Mitch Unrein is a Buc. They signed a DE

  57. @Broy3434 Says:

    Mitch Unrein. A 3-4 d end. Itā€™s like official. 3-4

  58. Joeypoppems Says:

nvm. Apparently another run stopping DT

  59. StAugBuc Says:

    They are officially the Rays

  60. tmaxcon Says:

    Buccaneer Bonzai

suh is talking with cowboys and seahawks bucs are not even in the same universe as those franchise. first class everything while the bucs are low budget trailer trash…. the small market mickey mouse bucs stand zero chance of landing Suh…

  61. Blake_Bucsfan Says:

Who in the world is Mitch Unrein? He’s been in the league for 8 years and I’ve literally never heard of him once.

Meanwhile Kony Ealy, Alex Okafor, Aaron Lynch etc.. are still unsigned.

    W T F?

  62. Rod Munch Says:

    Rotoworld on Mitch Unrein…

“Going on 31, Unrein is a career part-timer. He was effective on 389 snaps for the Bears last season, tallying 2.5 sacks, though he did miss four games with injury. Unrein will be a rotational player in Tampa.”

  63. Joeypoppems Says:

Nah its worse Tmax. Cowboys arent interested but apparently the Saints are

  64. Batman Wood Says:

Bucs signing new DE from Chicago

  65. tmaxcon Says:

    Joeypoppems

i just read a blurb on the cowboys… maybe old i guess

  66. Mike Johnson Says:

This new DE Mike Urine? 3 sacks in 2 yrs? or something like that. MAN!!! Send in the clowns. Add some Parliment and Funkadelics with diapers to the party also!! Getting deep up in here……

  67. LakeLand Says:

    Bucs signed DL Mitch Unrein

4.5 sacks in 7 seasons with 3 different teams

    More dumpster diving

    lol

  68. Rod Munch Says:

I have no idea how the Cowboys could even talk to Suh, they’re literally over the cap as it is and they still have to draft guys and fill out the rest of their team. The Saints reportedly only have about $10m in cap room and again they have to still make space for the draft, etc. I don’t get how these teams can think about signing a guy like Suh, what if they get into cap hell, what happens years from now when that catches up to them, what then?! Cap hell is worse than losing, much much worse.

  69. DB55 Says:

You know mike urine is trumps favorite player.

  70. Lamarcus Says:

Man oh boy. It’s looking like more 3-4 dline

  71. JonBuc Says:

LOL! The next Mark Gaustineau & Joe Klecko! Letā€™s hear about the ā€œgood depthā€. As in depths of despair….

  72. LakeLand Says:

K Chandler Catanzaro deal with the Bucs: three years, $9.75 million, $3.75 million guaranteed, source says,

Mitch Unrein signs for 3 years on a deal worth $10.5M, source said, with $4M guaranteed. Underrated, versatile player.

  73. Rod Munch Says:

Just a thought… maybe Derrick Brooks does in fact have a job with the team and is helping Licht build a roster, for the Tampa Bay Storm that is.

  74. ZK Says:

Who the F#CK is Mitch Unrein?

  75. tmaxcon Says:

    Rod Munch

get off the cap kick. cap is irrelevant… restructure here restructure there and you manage. the cap is no different than offense or defense you have to play the system and you have MASTER THE SYSTEM… FEAR LOSING NOT THE SALARY CAP!!!

  76. Blake_Bucsfan Says:

    Mitch Urien. 2017: 2.5 sacks.

Jason Licht sure is swinging for the fences…

  77. NFLNut Says:

YUCK … what are we going to do, have Murray kick all the FGs under 50 yards and trot Catanzaro out to attempt the whopping TWO fg’s he attempted and made from 50 last year?

This is an irrelevant signing …

  78. Joeypoppems Says:

PFF had both Beau Allen and Mitch Ulrein as the top 2 players in run stop percentage in the league last season. I guess rush defense is more important than pass rush atm

  79. Rod Munch Says:

Catanzaro got almost $4m in guaranteed money? Ugh… that means he’s the kicker, there is no competition.

Unrein at $3.5m/year as a rotational player who doesn’t contribute much of anything other than depth… wow. Let me guess, Unrein is a high character guy, right?

I had very low expectations for FA, but this effort so far is much worse than even my lowest expectations.

  80. Joeypoppems Says:

Patrick Murray is also a FA, people dont seem to realize that

  81. DB55 Says:

Wow so the Bucs said fck Tier 1,2 and 3. Let’s sign players that are unknowns even in their own houses. #Tier4FreeAgentsOnly

Wow this is beyond pathetic even for the Bucs.

  82. NFLNut Says:

3 years and almost $10mil … well, it doesn’t look like he’s mere “competition” for Murray, it looks like he’s the #1 guy all the way … I’m not impressed … at all.

  83. JonBuc Says:

Good teams manipulate the cap to their liking…lousy ones blame things on the cap and/or declare victory when they have cap space. So far so good…a twitchy kicker and ā€œthe other white meat(s)ā€manning the D-Line. Keeps. Getting. Better.

  84. Rod Munch Says:

tmaxcon – That was the point I was making, cap hell was a fake news narrative put out to cover for Gruden gutting the SB team after he got McKay fired. Gruden signed 21 free agents that year including big money deals to lots of guys like Garner, every 35+ year old injured offensive lineman in the league, heck Ian Gold got $6m at a time when Sapp would have made $6m. But that fake news cap hell nonsense carries over to today because people actually believed it back and still do now. Other teams that are at the cap every year seem to do just fine at not blowing up their team and thus I was mocking those people who worry about the cap.

  85. NFLNut Says:

Mitch Unrein? Really? A 30 year old DT that finished last season on injured reserve?

So, we gave the Beau Allen/Mitch Unrein run-stuffing DT combo $8.5mil per year … okay … we could have got Dontari Poe for that most likely but maybe the team feels it’s better to have these two players than just Poe.

I’m certainly not inspired but NAMES don’t win games, TEAMS do … both Beau and Mitch have been in the SuperBowl and both may be good locker-room guys, but man, talk about no-names …

  86. JimmyJack Says:

Iā€™m thinking we will see this team change itā€™s philosophy on the Dline. Lot more guys rotating in and out. They can even afford to get McCoy off the field some more as he doesnā€™t hold his weight in the running game.

Need more option at passrushers then Ayers and Spence however.

Still on hunger strike. Havenā€™t eaten in 29 hours now. None of these moves come close to ending it.

  87. tmaxcon Says:

    Rod Munch

right on sir… i am just blown away by people more worried about the cap than talent and losing… makes no sense…

  88. NFLNut Says:

Wasn’t it reported that Ryan Fitzpatrick only got around $3.3mil per on his new deal? So, we’re paying an average kicker more than our backup QB? Um, okay … I’d rather have went into camp with an UDRFA and some old head like Sea Bass or any other FA veteran kicker still unsigned and given them like $750k for a year and used that extra $2.6mil to take on to the $3.5mil we gave MITCH UNREIN and sign a better DT for $6.1mil per year … but hey, whatever …

  89. Lord Cornelius Says:

lol this is not looking good guys. I was waiting to panic but we just literally spent $10-12 million in cap space on 2 guys I’ve never heard of in my life and a K.

hmm Robert Quinn at $12 mill or

Beau Allen / Mitch Unrein / bad kicker

    WTF

  90. Joeypoppems Says:

    RIP JimmyJack

  91. tmaxcon Says:

this urine guy makes no sense at all… glazers sticking to the left overs, has beens and injury prone gamble business model in hopes to keep the basement streak in tact.

  92. MarineBucsFan Says:

Sooo, since I never heard of these guys I went to YouTube to try and see highlights of our new Defensive Linemen Beau Allen and Mitch Unrein hoping to get somewhat excited about these two……nothing Lol no highlights to capture any success they have had on the field.

  93. GhostofSchiano Says:

    Who ordered the Unrein?

    With a sprig of Allen?

No,no I ordered the SUH….never eating here again

  94. Lord Cornelius Says:

Unrein was the #2 overall run stopping guy at his position last year per PFF. I will always find some weird F8cking sad hope in all this I guess

  95. First Down Tampa Bay Says:

    Tmax

Wasn’t the basement streak broke last year?

  96. Joeypoppems Says:

    ^^^^

And Beau Allen was #1. At least they are addressing a team weakness I guess

  97. JimmyJack Says:

Licht has whiffed on at least five kickers in his four years here. I have no faith that this guy will be the answer.

However if he is NFLNUT he is well worth the money. At least he is for us Buc fans who havenā€™t seen good kicking in….I lost track. Has to be at least 7 years now.

  98. Jman Says:

    Oh no we suck again!

  99. bucsfan1988 Says:

Why the hell didn’t we go after the kicker from the Eagles, Caleb Sturgis?? They obviously wouldn’t keep Jake Elliot and him?? Sturgis has a huge leg and was doing well last year before he got injured??

  100. SteveK Says:

I like the run stopping efforts!

How about a pass rush for the love of god!

  101. Jeffbuc Says:

Joe we signed another dt Mitch unrein. And you got scooped by pro football talk. Come on this is suppose to be the bucs fan news central.

  102. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    tmaxcon Says
    “Buccaneer Bonzai

suh is talking with cowboys and seahawks bucs are not even in the same universe as those franchise.”

I was just messing around…but you are mistaken. The report that the Cowboys ere interested was false. The Cowboys have since denied any interest.

  103. IndianaBuc Says:

WTF! Are they trying to get fired at the end of the year!!!!

  104. horst Says:

Hopefully, they move up in the second to draft Roberto’s brother to compete with the new kicker. Very exciting times for the bucs. Best unies in the league! WTF!!!!!!!!

  105. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

The DE makes no sense to me. Except maybe they are focusing on run stoppers in free agency and pass rushers in the draft?

It does prove one thing though…as I said with the DT…$5m per year is not starting money.

  106. JJV Says:

Can’t wait until the press conference when they parade our stellar group of free agents while congratulating each other on a job well done. Then telling us stupid fans how much closer the team is now.

  107. JimmyJack Says:

Well we couldnā€™t stop the run last year so if these guys can come in and do that it will make our defense stronger. Iā€™ll believe it when I see it though because Gholston was paid to do that and made no impact in the run D.

Still have to fix the pass D and running game.

  108. Mike Johnson Says:

Way back in the day during my military service in the Philippines..they use to have a place called Sh.t river right out of Clark AFB. It was where the military emptied its waste, The Kids use to dive in the river for coins the GI’s would flip into the river..complete with scuba gear. Well, our Bucs are scuba diving in Sh.t river! 4.5 sacks in..seven..7..seasons? with a plethera of different teams?. what an aquisition. Welcome to the Den of Depression, Mr urine. may you flow…freely.
When they flush you out..Please take Lict, Koetter and pressbox Smitty with you!!

  109. MarineBucsFan Says:

It seems like they are making these low budget ā€œvalueā€ signings because they plan on making at least one splash signing. Iā€™m wondering who it could be, only a few players left that fit the bill.

  110. JJV Says:

We are just going to have to accept the fact that any big name or high tier player are not on the Bucs radar. Any rumors of interest or talks from the Bucs is just a huge smoke screen. The message has been sent loud and clear to the fans.

  111. NFLNut Says:

Calm down people … lots of “names” left: Mathieu, Ealy, Okafor, Boston, Reid, Vaccaro, Claiborne, Gaines, etc … but names don’t win games, teams do …

I’m still hoping to see Ryan Jensen signed, along with a starting quality SS (Tre Boston?) and a #2 corner (Gaines?) … a DE like Ealy would be nice too but I doubt it happens … as for RB, it seems the team will draft one … plus a guy like Adrian Peterson will probably just be sitting around unsigned after the draft and we could pick him up cheap for depth.

  112. LakeLand Says:

I have been saying this for months

Jason Licht won’t commit to expensive long term deals

He will save cap space to re-sign 6 players

Cam Brate, Mike Evans, Kwon, Donovan, Ali Marpet, Jameis Winston

    That’s the plan

  113. JJV Says:

Hoping and dreaming isn’t the same as actually happening. This is the NFL not Fantasyland.

  114. NFLNut Says:

^ If true, what is he waiting for with Ali, Donovan and Kwon? Why not extend them with Mike and Brate?

  115. NFLNut Says:

Licht probably should have extended Donovan BEFORE Solder broke the bank and should extend Marpet BEFORE he signs Ryan Jensen as he could lock Marpet in at C dollars rather than G dollars, no?

  116. LakeLand Says:

    NFLNut,

Jason Licht is doing what I thought he would do.

  117. darengibo Says:

The Bucs GM and scout team need to do a Costanza when it comes to evaluating Kickers and do the OPPOSITE!

  118. GhostofSchiano Says:

Licht: We were so close last year, we will be even closer this year.

Closer to what Jason, fan revolt, new jobs for you, Dirk and Smitty? Closer to joining lovie in his basement? Just what in the HELL are we closer to?

  119. NJBucsFan Says:

Muarry is a free agent so this is not a competition signing. Plus itā€™s a 3 year deal for $9.5 mil

  120. BringBucsBack Says:

Jimmy Jack my father and I have done many water-only fasts. Humans can go a long time without food but, only a few days without water. We would regularly go 28 to 30 days on the water only fasts. Be sure you drink a lot of water and sleep often. Your hunger pangs will go away completely, at the end of day three and it wonā€™t return for weeks; thatā€™s when you should begin eating again, if you wish to optimize your cleansing fast. Itā€™s also a healthy way to lose weight. Hang in there bud, it might take that long for the Bucs to do anything relevant.

  121. Duke Says:

    Lakeland,

FYI, at the end of the season the Bucs wasted no time and signed a long snapper.
The prized acquisition of the 2018 free agent market…..The guy who was so important that they signed him in January…..is a long snapper. His name…no clue but that’s because He’s known as “El’ snapper de longo”.
