Not Far Away

February 8th, 2018

Bucs are close, says GMC.

The Bucs are right there, said their stud defensive tackle Gerald McCoy.

Last week when GMC was making his rounds through the Mall of America food court radio row at the Super Bowl LII media center, he had a long sitdown with popular sports radio and television personality Adam Schein on SiriusXM “Mad Dog Radio.” There, GMC made a point that based on how the Bucs played their NFC South foes in December, the team is close to being a playoff contender and the team only needs a few “tweaks.”

This prompted an interesting question from Schein and response from GMC.

Adam Schein: What do you need to tweak?

Gerald McCoy: Our execution, man. These teams that are winning these games, especially the two that are in the Super Bowl, they know how to finish. And at the end of the game, they make all the plays necessary and they execute for all four quarters. Regardless of what happens, they never get down. They always keep fighting. The fight is not our issue. We have had numerous games where we were down and out and we fought back. Like the Arizona game, we were down and came back and lost by four points. The fight is there. We just to execute better and get a couple of more guys to help us out up front and get some guys in the back end and get some guys on offense and we are going to be rolling.

Joe doesn’t disagree with what GMC said but the Bucs need more than a “tweak.” The defense is at least a few productive players from being remotely respectable.

And on offense, the Bucs sorely need a running back.

But in how the team took on Atlanta, Carolina and New Orleans in December, with all three fighting for playoff positions, it showed that even with an under-performing defense, the Bucs should be able to beat those teams.

Lol Gerald just named half a starting roster in needs before we’re “rolling”.

Sign butler and grimes. Ziggy Ansah and a RB. Draft Derwin James then trench help. That would be a start.

“Joe doesn’t disagree with what GMC said but the Bucs need more than a “tweak.” The defense is at least a few productive players from being remotely respectable.”

But that’s not something he controls. He;s speaking for the players on the field.

Two DEs, a CB and a RB. That’s all we need. Heck, we might even only need one DE if Spence can stay healthy and produce, but we can’t count on that.

The offensive line just needs time. All great Olines take time to gel, and ours is no different.

  3. Ndog Says:

I love it he says we JUST need to get guys up front, in the back end and on offense. So basically we need a whole new team. Wow that is close.

  4. tmaxcon Says:

every year the crying clown proclaims the same BS then proceeds to captain his team to multiple flat performances and a long list of tired excuses while residing in the nfc south basement. the bottom line is 8 years for this fool not a single meaningful win proving he has no clue what winning is or how to win therefore his proclamations are less than meaningless. get rid of this POS bum. give the young kids a chance. cancer93 makes the boy who cried wolf look reliable.

  5. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    @Andrew

I’m not so sure about Butler.

I know Bill Bellicheat said it was not discipline-related, but word leaked about a confrontation between Butler and one of the coaches, and that Butler had been late to several meetings and was out partying the night before the game, missing curfew.

I think Bill said it wasn’t discipline when it actually was. As a result, he’s taking all the heat for it.

But that doesn’t sound like a player we need in Tampa.

Patriot fans need an excuse, and they’ve made Butler that…but the truth is Butler is not a god player…he’s just better than the guy who played in his place. Butler actually had a bad year.

  6. tmaxcon Says:

    Bonzi

butler is head and shoulders better than any buc CB not named Grimes and it’s not even close.

  7. AlteredEgo Says:

Close….hand grenades and horseshoes…I just watched all the play off games and the Super Bowl….Bucs are no where near that caliber of football

  8. Joe Blahak Says:

    Soft Ice Cream!…

  9. BucTrooper Says:

If only there was a RB on the board when the Bucs picked their 13th TE.

  10. WutdaBucisthis Says:

Done wit the GMC n building sound him…trade him PLEASE. While he is a good player, the Bucs should trade him…I know they won’t with jobs on the line but Damn. So freaking tired of him drivel on. So tired…
I’m not hating. Just stating the obvious. We’ve been in the basement WITH him. Like Semi-Pro…trade him for a dryer lol

  11. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

Way to be a terible leader again…….tell the glazers you are not close and you need, DL, DE, CB help,

  12. Joeypoppems Says:

Trading down from #7 and getting extra picks can go a long way for this team. If we can come out of the first 3 rounds with a DT, LG, DE, and RB that could be huge…. If the picks are hits of course.

Then use FA to sure up the secondary.

As far as what GMC is saying here I agree with him.

  13. Not there yet Says:

This is exactly what’s wrong with this team you have idiot players, coaches and front office basically everyone thinking that they are close because of the close games they lost. These idiots look at the final score instead of the entire games…. They got destroyed by Arizona like 3 years in a row a team that can’t make the playoffs but they think they are close. Teams let up on the bucs because they are so weak and soft then they think they are close because they play catch up against soft defense. Pathetic I hate when McCoy goes on national media to every off-season showing his gums. I want to hear what Winston had to say this guy needs to shut up

  14. Jarod lauderdale Says:

Gmc needs to go to Japan again & not come back this time ! Maybe his first burst to no where might help him sumo wrestler but I dought it.

  15. Mike Johnson Says:

Shut up GMC..You are..turning me against you!! I’m sick and tired of hearing how close we are..Every GD year!! I’,m one of your supporters but enough is enough!
Execution and finishing? Don’t tel lus what you need to do..DO IT! I’m sick of losing and hearing these readers say how great we are and how close we are and how great our coaches and players are. Next thing..You’ll be tellin us we are going to the superbowl next year IF………

  16. LakeLand Says:

The Bucs won’t win the NFC South anytime soon. Not with an offense scoring 19.2 PPG.

  17. Jarod lauderdale Says:

And not with the chit show of a defense that was fielded & for Christ sake can someone please get jameis a running back that can……you know …RUN

  18. Jarod lauderdale Says:

Oh , and your fooling yourselves if you are one of the one’s who think barber is that guy ! I would look Worthy if drug Martin was the other option ! Barber is a career backup who fumbles at the wrong times …period !

  19. Capt.Tim Says:

    What else could he say?
“ Our Coaches suck, Ive got no help on the Dline, and our GM drafts a kicker, when weve needed a DE for 8 years!!”

Yeah, right. Pretty sure the NFL would fine him blind for that one.

  20. tmaxcon Says:

i have been saying it for years and nothing has changed… this team will never be successful with the POS cancer93 wearing the C… he is complete and total locker room cancer with a smile and nothing more than the face of the basement years.

cancer93 is just another religious hypocrite with a smile who has fooled a congregation of buc fans with his smiles and BS…. Jerry Falwell and tammy faye would be proud of the crying clown and his bs fraud job.

  21. sj_bucsfan Says:

I agree, the only things the Bucs need to improve on is Coaching, Execution, Defense, Offense & Special Teams and they’ll be rolling…

  22. 813bucboi Says:

    BONZAI

that’s all BS regarding butler….opce those comments were made about his character he threw cold water on them….said he didn’t miss any curfew…wasn’t late for meetings and didn’t have any drugs on him…..

    think about it….

when Jamie Collins complained about his contract and wanted more money, they promptly traded him and explained to the media why they made the move….

when chandler jones was found naked at the police station and high on whatever he was on, they promptly traded him and everyone knew why…..

no one knows exactly why butler was benched…..

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!

  23. Lord Cornelius Says:

GMC is starting to really annoy me. Same with Licht with this “we were close” bullsh1t. What about the f*cking blowout losses to the

    Vikings (17-34)
    Saints (10-30)
    Falcons (20-34)

That’s 3 games we got destroyed on defense and gave up 32.6 PPG. Were you real close on those games?

Winston sh1t the bed hard in the Carolina loss early – that’s on him not the defense. But those 3 games- you were not close at all Gerald. Your unit sucked.

Oh and the Arizona game? Are you f*cking kidding me?

Arizona was not some close 4 point loss that we had a chance to win. We were down 2 scores with 3 minutes left in that game. That’s game-over in the NFL. Yeah they played well while Arzizona was nursing an insane lead because your sh1t defense sh1t the bed and gave up 31 points in the blink of an eye. You want to really pat yourself on the back for that?

Stop with this moral victory bullsh1t. Stop glorifying losses. You f*cking sucked own it. Obviously this positive spin on losses never has translated to more wins – so just freaking stop dude.

  24. 813bucboi Says:

add “tweak” to the long list of excuses…..

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!!

  25. Tackleblockwin Says:

This is the funniest comment I’ve read from a Buc player or coach in a long time. Reminds me something of ole Coach McKay might say.

“We just to execute better and get a couple of more guys to help us out up front and get some guys in the back end and get some guys on offense and we are going to be rolling.”

  26. Tackleblockwin Says:

Some of McKay’s quotes about the Bucs back when he was coaching still ring true today.

    https://www.sportsfeelgoodstories.com/john-mckay-quotes/

    Enjoy!

  27. Bobby M. Says:

His reference point for success is what exactly? I like McCoy but the dude has been on two winning teams in a decade, he doesn’t have a clue of what being close looks like.

  28. Greg Says:

We are just 4 players away from relevancy…Antonio Brown, Aaron Donald, LeVeon Bell and Jalen Ramsey

  29. Bob in Valrico Says:

@lord C I agree with McCoy execution statement, but it extends to both offense and defense. Jameis had 3 int’s in the Viking game. Don’t forget all the good plays called back because of penalties or giving up critical yards due to penalties or missed assignments.

  30. DB55 Says:

The fight is not our issue.
    ——————-
    Oh I beg to differ.

  31. 813bucboi Says:

I guess no one ever told GMC, “almost doesn’t count”

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!…GO BUCS!!!!

  32. StPeteBucsFan Says:

Yeah I’m pretty disgusted our players believe they have a chance to win next year.

What kind of idiots do we have playing for the Bucs…trying to be positive and build for the future when we all know the little train got to the top of the hill by saying…I think I can’t I think I can’t.

Why don’t these players shape up and simply say..we suck..we have no future so don’t even bother to pay attention to us next year.

Yeah that’s the ticket. Besides if these guy ever start winning what would all the miserable haters have to complain about? Oh yeah their lives!

  33. StPeteBucsFan Says:

BTW….since last year’s 5-11 bath was so horrible I feel certain we should just throw the baby out with the bathwater.

  34. DB55 Says:

    Spbf

Your panties riding a bit high today?

  35. LakeLand Says:

The so-call Buc fans are pleading for all fans to be optimistic
Where were these fans in 2015?

  36. Lord Cornelius Says:

    “Bob in Valrico Says”

At least Jameis isn’t going on a PR tour to glorify losses. At least he seems to realize this is unacceptable bullsh1t.

He threw 3 picks but in context 1 was on djax getting pushed down on his route which should have been PI – otherwise he catches the ball; and another hit ME in the hands before it was picked.

Either way that game was basically over 1.5 quarters in due to the defense giving up 21 points in the blink of an eye. They forced 2 punts all game and didn’t create any turnovers. Good luck to any offense over-coming that..

  37. Jarod lauderdale Says:

I’m almost 40 years old & have watched bucks & bandits games in Tampa since I was six…last seasons defence was the worst I have ever seen ! Period..and this arse clown 100 effin million dollar man is at the center of it all ! Mr.gummy bear does not win and I’d just much rather get him the f outta here !

  38. Jarod lauderdale Says:

    Bucs*

  39. Rod Munch Says:

Fix the offensive line and the terrible first down play calling which telegraphs what the Bucs are going to do, and tah dah, you suddenly have a running game.

Dirk wasn’t the ultra predictable run it up the first on every first down in the first half guy in the last few games of the season that he was all of 2016 and most of 2017, he suddenly remembered this thing called the play action pass and it worked fantastic – probably because teams were stunned the Bucs had broke their nearly 2 year old first half script. If Dirk simply mixes it up, like he did down the strech, then that will help tremendously.

The Bucs however still need to move Marpet back to G and get a real full-time center, that helps things a lot. Marpet is a special player at G, but I don’t think anyone can say his move to center was anything other than mediocre at best.

  40. StPeteBucsFan Says:

Let’s review the logic here. ONE player has been accused of making our defense horrible and soft….ONE player is the reason our defense is bad…for some ONE player is the reason the Bucs haven’t visited the playoffs.

IF you believe that load wouldn’t it make perfect sense then to say we’re simply ONE player away from becoming winners?

You can’t have it both ways. Either football is a team sport…requiring 11 pieces on defense..11 on offense or it’s a ONE man sport. Which is it? Are we really just one player away..somebody who doesn’t like ice cream from winning?

  41. GhostofTedford Says:

and get a couple of more guys to help us out up front and get some guys in the back end and get some guys on offense and we are going to be rolling.

How many are we talking about Geraldine? In other words we need more draft picks, I could not agree more, let’s trade your soft @$$ for at least one draft pick. Sick of this softy, while your at Geraldine please learn the King’s English you sound illiterate when you speak. Maybe that is saying something about Oklahoma’s standards.

  42. Bob in Valrico Says:

    @ lord C
Don’t see it as a PR stunt. There really isn’t any argument that his statement all the way through execution through the fourth quarter was accurate . McCoy put into words what the players need to do to compete. Also up to Jason Licht to add the proper players to form a cohesive unit on both defense and offense.

  43. GhostofTedford Says:

StPeteBucsFan Says IF you believe that load wouldn’t it make perfect sense then to say we’re simply ONE player away from becoming winners?

It is his approach and attitude to the game, his mentality that frustrates so many. He has all the tools to be a great football player. His soft mental approach is the problem. It influences players around him. He does not challenge his team mates, he encourages weakness. I hate the guy.

  44. SOEbuc Says:

    1. Fitzpatrick/ Vea
    2. DE (CB Mike Hughes if we get Vea)
    3. DE
    4. SS
    5. RB
    6. DE
    6. OG/ K (If we get Nelson)

Sign Trumaine Johnson and a decent/good DE.

  45. Buc believer Says:

Da Da Da Da Da…. Batman… Batman Batman… he is such a joke!!!

  46. Reach87 Says:

Hilarious. How exactly do mccoy’s quotes illustrate he is not a leader? He offers an assessment without calling out any individual and is somehow wrong…funny. Added to that, his point is arguable…we were close in at least 5 games (got the three blowouts). Win those and the narrative is different. My point…his comments probably demonstrate that he has leadership MORE than that he doesn’t, AND people will criticize every thing he says regardless of merit because he’s not the personality you want him to be. The reaction of a large group of posers on this site is funny. Sad. Go Bucs.

  47. Gman Says:

Getting rid of McCoy would hopefully send a message that we need to get rid of the loser mentality and get some onions. Two constants here since 2010 …#93 and the Glazers…can’t get rid of the Glazers.

  48. BigHogHaynes Says:

Getting rid of McCoy is assinine, complete foolishness, this is a team sport, some here act as if week in and week out GMC was the main cause for our loses. Y hope is if the get rid of him that he goes on to win not one but two Championship Rings…it’s happened … With one of those RINGS coming against the Bucs sticking them right up the a$$! TAKE A KNEE …KEEP AMERICA FREE…let’s not MAKE AMERICA WHITE AGAIN…TRUMPMAXCON STAY ON THE BLACK…GIVE ME LIBERTY OR GIVE ME A PARADE!!
