“I Think They Made The Right Move”

December 29th, 2017

Two thumbs up to Team Glazer.

Jason Whitlock is on board with Team Glazer.

The outspoken host of “Speak for Yourself,” seen weekdays on FS1, wasted no time in his show defending Team Glazer for retaining Dirk Koetter for another season.

Whitlock is of the mind that Chucky is nothing more than “glitz and glamour.”

Doug Gottlieb agreed, if for no other reason than for America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston.

“I kind of think this is the smart thing,” Gottlieb said.

Bucky Brooks implied that Chucky likely would have been “disastrous” with Jameis as he doesn’t work well with younger players.

Jimmy Jackson, one of the most underrated basketball players of all time, and currently a basketball TV analyst, said announcers for whatever reason sound smarter than they actually are, referring to Chucky’s TV gig.

So the youngest Sb winning coach is not smart? Hmmm ok!

  2. Joe Says:

So the youngest Sb winning coach is not smart? Hmmm ok!

Outside of possibly Chris Russo, never heard anyone say that about Mike Tomlin.

  3. JonBuc Says:

Whitlock…much like his contemporary George Costanza…has a knack for being right…only in reverse/exact opposite. I feel better already!

  4. Tampa Bay Tailgater Says:

Interesting take. All you hear about is Gruden won with Dungys team but I never thought about Gruden former team making it to the Superbowl the very next year he left! I love it!

  5. mark2001 Says:

No “glitz and glamor” in your life apparently , Whitlock.

  6. Nate Says:

chucky got chicken salad out of simms though to reach the playoffs …..

koetter gets his chance and this fan is good with it

but I swear if chucky pulls a mcvay and drafts a qb and gains instant success ……this fan base is DOOMED

the glazers better hope he doesn’t come back to not even be a chance of that …..Joe you too….

    sunday church pre game LOL

  7. Lamarcus Says:

It shouldn’t be ” I think” it was a right move. It was the right move.

Didn’t want no broadcaster coaching the Bucs and to be taken serious

  8. DB55 Says:

I stand corrected. Learn something new every day.

  9. Nate Says:

Grudens team make it the year he got traded NOT LEFT….because he left the raiders with the #1 offense he built

I swear ALL THE GRUDEN HATERS THINK BACKWARDS WITHOUT THINKING

sometimes I ALMOST wish we never won a superbowl for the dungys team people

funny thing like he never had to go to a team with an offense in place…..only the best qb possibly in history

the bucs D was MOST CONSISTENT and top 5 but not the best in history

    backwards thinking lol

  10. Rod Munch Says:

    Who?

  11. Nate Says:

    Grudens team made it*

  12. Nate Says:

    Lamarcus no broadcaster……just curious

were you even a fan of this team during the superbowl??????

  13. Buccaneer Bill Says:

Interesting the broadcast ended with a comment that Dallas and Green Bay are jobs you take. That says plenty about the Buc organization, probably related to the coaching carousel we’ve been seeing.

  14. JonBuc Says:

Bros. Glazer: “ Why should we retain you, The Dirk?”

The Dirk: “ Well…we barely beat the pathetic New York teams at home, beat our former pet Giraffe Glennon and held on for dear life vs Matt “Less is Moore.”

Bros. Glazer:” Sounds reasonable. Plus…100% of elf erotica writers think it was a deft move…so there’s that.”

    The Dirk: “I’m grateful.”

  15. Nate Says:

cause Dungy had to go to a team w/D and bring defense just like gruden went to a team with O and bring offense

only dfference …..dungy beat the suspect bears and their even more suspect joke of a qb

we had to still score enuff to avoid a comeback from the #1 offense

  16. Stevbobucsfan Says:

Here we go with the race crap they didn’t say that about Tomlin. 31 more coaches in the league and Tomlin had to be brought up or Dungy in some matter. Let’s talk bucs football 018 Koetter and Jameis

  17. Quattrolou Says:

    #notmyheadcoach

  18. Nate Says:

Dirk” don’t forget my 3 yr scoring offense of average of under 20 points”

if kwon never got us that pick we might not of scored last game……”SOOO grateful”

  19. SB Says:

OUCH!!! is all I can say after watching that clip.

  20. Dom is gone Says:

This is not a smart thing it’s s financial thing.. Believe Glazer boys are tired of paying coaches just sit at home in cash their paychecks. They made a huge financial obligation to Dirk and Smith. If they watch his team play and truly believe that this coaching staff and GM know what they’re doing ….. well it’s Hugh Culverhouse all over again. you young bucs fans that of been joyed eight years of the early 2000’s get live to the hell that is old guys did from the early 80s to mid 90s …. it used to absolutely suck to be a buccaneer fan starting to feel that way again

  21. Nate Says:

you never hear about grudens team making the superbowl the year he left it

CAUSE ITS A DUMB @SS POINT LOL

one he got traded not left…..and it took a bag full of cash and picks to do it …..which hurt the team but got us a ring

#2 he built the #1 offense and if it wasn’t for tuck rule he might have won THAT YEAR

I bet you love it tampa tailgater…..really for that comment he must be getting his weed from Seattle smh lol

  22. nole4JabooANDdBucs Says:

I think this fiasco is really gonna help Dirk relationship with Jameis…all and all keep Monk the ‘receiver whisperer’!

  23. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

These videos will never play for me 🙁

  24. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

In my mind, once the retained Licht, I knew this was next.
Gruden never really left Tampa, he has a beautiful home here. I should know, my Company recently cleaned his roof, and no, I do not know Jon Gruden.
This is what I wanted, us to keep Koetter for one more year, and draft Mike Smith some pass rushers!
    Go Bucs !

  25. Todd Says:

Nothing but the glazers being cheap and not wAnting to pay a coach to sit at home. Koetter is not a nfl head coach he is a nfl OC. Give up play calling duties ? The reason we fired Lovie Smith was because we didn’t want to lose koetter as our OC

  26. mark2001 Says:

That is OK Bonzai…as long as the SB DVD plays for you, that is all you need to watch….the rest isn’t worth your while.

  27. JonBuc Says:

    Buccaneer Browneye sez:

“These videos will never play for me ( sad face ).”

    @ BrownEye:

Perhaps all that elf erotica ( and God only knows what else ) is jamming up
    your hard drive? Yikes.

  28. Perimeter Blocker Says:

This guy is a nobody… I keep thinking how the Rams changed in one year and how Buc Fans have to be “patient”… Really???!!!!

  29. Defense Rules Says:

Chris, I hope you’re right that Bucs also keep Mike Smith. And the rest of this defensive coaching staff. The ball is clearly in Jason Licht’s end of the court … this defense needs a major rebuild, and quickly or next season will be more of the same.

Folks can say what they want, but Smitty saved Koetter’s bacon in 2016. That 9-7 record would’ve been 5-11 or so if the Bucs’ D hadn’t kicked arse in the 2nd half of the season. We did draft a couple of rookies who’ve played fairly well on defense this year (Beckwith & Evans), but the reality is that BOTH of them had issues when drafted, so I wouldn’t throw too many kudos at Licht for his drafting prowess there. We desperately needed safety help, so we first got JJ Wilcox then he gets traded when washed up TJ Ward hops on the train. How’d that work out for us? And depending on Ayers (33 yrs old), and Jack Smith (ALWAYS injured), and Noah Spence (smallish DE with an injury history) was a prescription for disaster. Of course that was easily outdone by bringing in Fatty Baker to solve our rush defense problems (ya right) and rewarding the defense with yet another 7th round pick to grab a DT, who then winds up on IR at start of season.

What Smitty & the defensive coaching staff have done with this rag-tag group is actually quite impressive. If Licht (or hopefully his successor) does his job and beefs up the defense like it should be (2 DEs, 2 DTs, 1 Safety, 2 CBs) … with QUALITY players for a change … Smitty & company can get this defense up into the Top 10-15 range IMO. And if Licht (or his successor) does his job and beefs up our OLine (preferably a Center & Tackle) … with QUALITY players … and hopefully adds a running back, this offense can also end up in the Top 10-15 range IMO. That should be good enough to go anywhere from 9-7 to 11-5 most likely, with the possibility of a playoff spot depending upon how well the Falcons, Saints & Panthers do. At least now there’s some hope for next season … IF Licht (or his successor) does his job.

  30. Jarod Lauderdale Says:

Ah , F it ! Now that this has been settled let’s get a top back like yesterday through the draft & some hogs on the line ! Defensive overhaul must need done !

  31. Lamarcus Says:

    Nate

Of course I was. I even was a fan before any of the Superbowl players were even on the team. I do THINK Gruden is and was overrated. Come on man. He wants old players to help his azz in coaching deficiencies and still that didn’t work.

Gruden pissed me off w that Cadillac draft not taking a young Qb Gruden drafted was way below average.

The only Gruden love I have for him is a Superbowl outside of that. Nothing

  32. BuccaneEric75 Says:

Stevobucsfan, YOU are the one bringing up the “race crap”! Read the first 2 comments on this article. DB55 incorrectly thought that Gruden was the youngest coach to win the SB. Joe corrected him. Tomlin is the youngest coach to win the SB; and Joe is correct; only Russo would say that Tomlin isn’t smart.

  33. mark2001 Says:

Lamarcus… we should have drafted Steven Jackson…that is the guy I was cheering for… instead of Michael Clayton. Then we shouldn’t have needed a RB…and we could have drafted a QB.

  34. mark2001 Says:

Lemarcus… That is exactly what happens when you draft for position of need and not the BPA.

  35. ben Says:

Paying $2300 year plus for season tkts and keeping Light and Koetter does not make it worth the hard earned cash ,again!

  36. Lamarcus Says:

    Mark001

I remember that Steven Jackson botch I didn’t even think of that one. Now I really don’t want Gruden

  37. Lakeland Says:

I will give credit to Jon Gruden for taking 2 teams to the Super Bowl. It’s sad that the Raiders was robbed of a win that would have put them in the 2002 Super Bowl. In my opinion the Raiders were the TRUE 2001 AFC Champions.

  38. Lakeland Says:

I believe that “Tuck Rule” call will keep Jon Gruden out of the Hall of Fame. It’s the WORST call ever in NFL history.

  39. Ndog Says:

Think about this, our wins this year were against the Bears (might fire their coach) Giants (already fired their coach) Dolphins (lost their backup QB during the game and were playing their 3rd stringer, though he did better than the backup) and the Jets (just reupped their coach but before today the thinking was he would get fired.) Combine that with the usage of Doug Martin, Chris Baker, Desaun Jackson, rotating left guards, rotating safties, horrible red zone play calling, and using a offense that does not fit his players skill set I am going to have a hard time getting excited about next year. Well the positive news is we wont have to worry about high expectations next year. My goodness what is this team doing and I love that complete idiots like the ones on this video get paid for spewing the crap they do. SMH why do I keep caring about this crap?

  40. Doctor Stroud Says:

Notice that the segment is sponsored by Southern Comfort! I think that we need some of that after this season.

  41. tmaxcon Says:

since whyce built dungy’s team the gruden won with dungy’s team is hilarious and totally inaccurate… the more accurate statement is gruden cleaned up mckays and dungy’s mess. dungy and mckay could not field and offense and his 4 best defensive stars at the time of hire were already in house sapp, lynch, brooks and nickerson… NO way dungy would have signed off on any of those 4 players. people forget free pass brooks was suspended in college no way dungy would have drafted him and he certainly would not have drafted sapp with his baggage. Nickerson was too aggressive for dungy… dungy screwed the bucs he did not turn it around. they were never contenders just one dimensional pretenders. you guys can’t rewrite mr peanuts history based on popularity. bottom line he failed.

the legend of dungy far exceeds his actually accomplishments. he did not turn the bucs around 2 playoff wins in 6 years is a failure nothing to celebrate. in reality dungy set the bucs back and wasted a great defense because he was too ignorant and stubborn to field an offense.

gruden will fail when he comes back. These mentally weak snowflake players will cry to high heaven the first time he yells at them or backstabs them in the media. not to mention the wussified practice schedule will not be adequate for grudens offense. It’s a different league now with soft arse pansies like mccoy.. bucs dodged a bullet with not hiring gruden.

  42. First Down Tampa Bay Says:

The revolving door of head coaches has finally stopped! It’s a post-christmas miracle!

  43. Lakeland Says:

It wasn’t Sam Wyche team. It wasn’t Tony Dungy team. It wasn’t Jon Gruden team. Rich McKay drafted or signed EVERY single player on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 2002 Super Bowl Roster. Geeeeez

  44. Lakeland Says:

He either drafted them, signed them as free agents or traded for them.

  45. Pierce Says:

Heck yeah it’s the right move. Continuity is King! If the players haven’t given up on Koetter why should the owners? He had one good season and one bad season. I really think the players like playing for him too so hopefully that transfers into the field next year. My biggest conundrum right now is against the Saints. Chubb sounds like a solid pick and I’d hate to give him up for a moral victory, but it’s hard not to want to win. Glad I’m not making those decisions. Go Bucs!!!

  46. QBKilla Says:

Good move by the Glazers, Dirk deserves another year. Let’s hope we can draft Chubb and maybe a stud DT. My guess is that Gruden will probably wait another year.

  47. Matts17 Says:

This time next year the Bucs will be on the search for a new GM and coach. Glazers flushing 2018 at the end of 2017. Happy new year.

  48. tmaxcon Says:

Lakeland you are dead wrong and know it…. you can not rewrite history to justify your man crush on a ignorant failed coach… mckay was horrible talent guy look how fast atl stripped him of those duties…. those failed glory years are like a fish tail they grow each year…. the legend of dungy far exceeds the clowns accomplishments…

  49. grafikdetail Says:

politics or sports, Whitlock is the biggest clueless idiot in the media… why would i feel better because he of all people said the Glazers made the right decision

  50. Blake_Bucsfan Says:

    “mckay was horrible talent guy”

Lol, the guy drafted 5 hall of famers, and built a complete team that won the Super Bowl.

It could easily be argued that If Jon Gruden had never had Rich McKay run, we’d still be at the very least a respectable, competitive franchise year in and year out.

  51. Joe Says:

    “mckay was horrible talent guy”

McKay’s Achilles was not being able to draft skill position players on offense unless they were running backs. Not sure how much influence Father Dungy had though.

  52. Joe Says:

In my mind, once the retained Licht,

Licht has not been retained (yet). Team Glazer picked up his option for 2018 last summer but that hardly means he is safe from being let go in a few days or weeks.

  53. Mike Johnson Says:

This Buc team is going nowheres unless they change DC’s and start building a Kick A.. Defense. Keep Smitty and I’m gonna be laughing next season sayin, Told Y’all so!!

  54. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

@Defense Rules, I agree, Smitty did an awesome job with the rag tag 3rd and 4th string !

  55. mark2001 Says:

Mike…honestly…what talent young, or vet coordinator is going to come in and replace Smith? Would you if it were you? A one year job and setting back your career years? Let go next year and out in the wind if Koetter and Licht founder again another year, which they likely will? Certainly you wouldn’t do it. Just accept the fact that it will be Smith, an older vet collecting a last paycheck, or some unknown crap shoot. It can’t go any other way.

  56. Oxycondoms Says:

I wonder who licht gets a boner for this offseason . Djax, aguyao, Baker . Can’t really credit him for getting Grimes that was probably all mike smith
