NFL Fixes Record On McCoy, Who Talks Pro Bowl Vote

November 15th, 2017

Gerald McCoy speaks

Right after Sunday’s game, Joe shared that the official NFL scorekeeper screwed up and gave Robert Ayers a sack that Gerald McCoy deserved.

Today the NFL corrected the record — an hour or so after Joe asked McCoy about the lost sack.

No. 93 was pumped for an official fix, in part to help bolster his Pro Bowl credentials.

“Everybody works extremely hard to get to the quarterback. I think everybody deserves what they work for,” McCoy said.

“It would be great to have a two-piece (aka two sacks) and then keep building off that. There’s this thing that people are voting for that just opened up. So I need all I can get, you know.

“I’m chasing somebody. I don’t know if you guys know who I’m chasing, and he has a pretty good resumé, so I gotta keep it going.”

A couple of things here: That vote “thing” that just opened is the Pro Bowl. And you can vote on NFL.com (but you can’t vote for Doug Martin, since PED-suspended players don’t get on the ballot.

As for who McCoy is “chasing,” is it Warren Sapp? Sapp made seven consecutive Pro Bowls with the Bucs (1997-2003). McCoy is now on a five-year run (2012-2016) and looking for six.

Among NFC defensive tackles, David Irving of the Cowboys leads with six sacks. Fletcher Cox of the Eagles has 4.5. McCoy now has four.

  2. Rob Says:

Their is no “I” in team Gerald. Do your job and the sacks and Pro Bowls will come. Great players shouldn’t worry about stats, they are for losers. Oh yeah, our Bucs are some of the biggest losers in 2017 and Gerald, you are captain of the defensive losers. Arguing about getting your fourth sack nine games into this abortion of a season is almost comical. Go watch some tape of former Buc, DE pass rushing specialist Adrian Clayborn, if you want to see a stud go after the quarterback. I can’t believe Gerald is thinking of the Pro Bowl when all he should be thinking of is trying to win football games. I never thought of Gerald as weak minded before this but OMG! That is a selfish player if I ever heard of one. Go Bucs.

  3. Buc believer Says:

This truly confirms that he is a selfish in it for me not team kind of player. Loser!!

  4. Espo Says:

I’ve defended him against many but this is one selfish answer. Says a lot.

  5. USFBUC Says:

Guys stop the Adrian Clayborn talk the guy had a good game against a backup LT.

GMC does sound lame searching for pro bowl votes with the teams record currently.

  6. Hawaiian Buc Says:

Every player wants stats. If any of you ever played sports, don’t even try to pretend like you didn’t check the stat column to see how you did. I was as big of a team guy as anyone when I played basketball, but you better believe I knew my stats after every game. Walter Payton famously was furious for not getting a TD in the Super Bowl. Gerald isn’t even upset, but of course he wanted the sack. Why wouldn’t he?

You don’t think Mike Evans wants to get 1000 yards and 10 TD’s every season? You don’t think Lavonte knows how many forced fumbles he has? They all know their numbers, and that’s not a bad thing. In order to help the team, you have to want to be good individually. It’s funny because the same people that hate McCoy like to talk about how many sacks and tackles he has are the same ones complaining when he wants credit for those numbers?!?! Makes no sense, but I’m sure I’m going to get a bunch of guys saying how all they care about was winning when they played pop Warner.

  7. Hawaiian Buc Says:

If you were in his shoes, wouldn’t you want to get to 10 sacks? He’s been on the doorstep several times, but never quite got there. Would you rather him just not care? I truly don’t get that mentality. You don’t want your DT to want to get to double digit sacks? Really?

  8. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

All is needed are a few morons to post up here to prove beyond shadow of doubt that Buccaner fans are simply the biggest pure tee simpletons in football. Just need maxipad stpete and a few other GMC haters. You fools don’t you know players play for themselvesalso? Like you clowns do anything for everybody else.

  9. SB Says:

It has been almost 42 years since I first donned my Leroy Selmon Jersey as a kid. This team has been Bad for most of it’s existence but Today it’s ‘fanbase’ is more sad than I could imagine.

  10. Lamarcus Says:

Ur comment are ridiculous. There is a ME in team and gmc is as ME as it gets. Gmc has not been a pro bowl player for this team and shows up on the field. GMc needs individual sacks to stay relevant but mcdonald don’t need sacks to be relevant? Wins make u relevant in nfl not probowls

Jw would never say anything this selfish

  11. Hawaiian Buc Says:

You cannot name an athlete that doesn’t care about stats. Sure they may all say they don’t care, but if you believe that you probably also believe it when a team gets rid of a guy and says “I wish him nothing but success”. In no way does that mean they don’t care about the team or they wouldn’t trade their good stats for a win. So many fans who have never played sports beyond junior high want to believe that these guys don’t care about individual accomplishments, but the reason they are so successful is because they do care. They set individual goals for themselves, and they should. I want Jameis to want to throw for 5000 yards. I want Doug to want to rush for 1500 yards. I want GMC to want 10 sacks. I want all of them to want to go to the Pro Bowl every year. The moment they stop caring about that is the moment they should quit.

  12. Hawaiian Buc Says:

First of all, it wasn’t McDonald, it was Ayers. Second, why shouldn’t the man who sacked him get the credit? How would you like it if at your job your co-worker got the credit for something you did? Third, why do you think McCoy was upset? He didn’t bring it up, it was asked to him. He didn’t petition the league. Those guys have friendly competitions within their rooms to get sacks. That’s a good thing. I get it you don’t like him, and that’s your right. But to think that everyone else isn’t the same way is just play wrong.

  13. Bob in Valrico Says:

    Have to agree SB
The angry mob wants to hang it on somebody for all the losses . Plenty of blame to go around on the losses.

  14. Clw JB Says:

He will NEVER be Sapp or anything even remotely close

Soft as cotton, one trick pony

He’s good, but NEVER been great like 99

Sapp got Culpepper sorry arse 10’sacks man….who has ever excelled next to GmAC…..NO ONE

  15. Lamarcus Says:

    I’ll be reasonable

If this team was 5 and 4 or better I wouldn’t care less about gmc wanting extra credit sacks to make a pro bowl. I do care if lvd makes pro bowl. He is been are only all pro defender out there. No not grimes

  16. Rob Says:

My point is stop whining like a little …. and DO YOUR JOB! Lee Roy Selmon never whined about anything. He was a quiet, lethal force that everyone respected on and off the field. A first ballot Hall of Famer. Gerald always seems to have the aw shucks, I’m sure not appreciated enough around here attitude. He is an incredible talent. Just shut up and dominate and show us how good you are. Stop whining about not getting credit for a sack or whatever. I care about wins. Don’t you? The problem with the Buc fan base if any, is accepting mediocrity. Screw that. This whole team needs to be held accountable for this sorry as hell season we are tortured to endure. Are you really excited about beating the JETS? Come on man. This team has nothing but excuses. Go win 5 in a row and then start beating your chest. Go Bucs!

  17. unbelievable Says:

    Agreed SB.

Though I’ll admit, hearing him talk about the probowl and chasing Sapp right now is pretty damn lame considering the way the season is going. More fodder for the haters though…

  18. Blake_Bucsfan Says:

Yeah, ok Gerald. If there was ever a year where you absolutely did not deserve to go to the probowl. It’s this one.

  19. cmurda Says:

I take exception to Culpepper and sorry arse in the same sentence. Brad gave it 100% on the field all game, every game. I don’t see that type of effort from that many men on the roster anymore. Culpepper wasn’t all world but he was a hard-nosed tough player.

  20. DoNUTS Says:

    HB
Its futile, you cant talk common sense with some of these “fans” who don’t want their own players to try hard on Sunday and improve their “stats”. In there sad minds, there is no relationship between winning football and great individual stats.

If GMC ever leaves, his replacement will not be as good. Fact.

    Go Bucs!

  21. Buc1987 Says:

Lot’s of revealing stuff about this dude is coming out. I’m glad he’s finally letting it all out how he really cares and feels.

I never defended McCoy. I never really bashed him either.

I’m starting to understand why he needs to go though. No matter how much Tmax pounded it into my head for the last year.

It’s not just what is said here, but what was said earlier about changing up practice all of a sudden to improve things.

I think this dude HAS to go!

  22. Buc1987 Says:

Level headed former defenders of McCoy are now bashing him…..

HB will defend to the end….

  23. Gerald McRuud Says:

4 sacks in 13 games now, good job #93. That’s only $2.5 million per sack. The youngest QB he’s sacked in the last 13 games is Carson Palmer, who is a spry 37.

Also 4 offsides penalties in that time. 4 offsides cost us 20 yards, but the 4 sacks totaled 22 yards lost. So, net +2 yards for that $10 million over 13 games. But he makes everyone around him so much better.

Except Adrian Clayborn got better when he left.
And Michael Bennett got better when he left.
And Michael Johnson was good before he got here and is still decent to this day, but was terrible here.
And Robert Ayers had 10 sacks in 12 games before he got here and now has 8 in a year and a half next to #93.

But he makes everyone around him better. And he’s such a great leader, just ask him, he’ll rave about how hard he practices a week after getting outhustled by a 62 year old ref with a stint in his heart. Such a leader.

    Hawaiian I missed you

  25. Gerald McRuud Says:

Of course, Dirk Koetter, he of the 3-9 record vs winners as a pro and 2-19 record vs ranked teams in college, was at a podium after sunday’s win and said something like

“we had 6 guys get sacks sunday, so I know we had 6 happy guys”

Great mindset. Wonder why this teams priorities have been allowed to get so out of whack.

  26. Not there yet Says:

I’m tired of saying that he cares more about stats than actually wins. Easy to take shots at him for this but technically he’s just answering the question he was asked…. We all knew missing out on that sack kept you up late at night though Mr McCoy. Cancer disguised as a probowl DT. The impact on this team if he left would affect us as much as Detroit losing Suh which was minimal affect if any at all.

  27. Not there yet Says:

Then again I take that back considering how meaningless a probowl birth is. Certain guys don’t care about that because they are to concerned with the playoffs lol so sad GMC

Wise one? How many games did Sapp trail to get all of those sacks? Our 3 and out QB’s including Winston will confirm not many. We always down, always. How was the pass rush against the Jets this pass Sunday? DB55 and so many of these inaccurate statements are like a Winston deep pass..

  29. '79Defense Says:

I love football but it can be such a stupid soap opera with comments that develop from stories like this. McCoy isn’t an evil guy.

It seems everything players say is magnified 100 times more now than it was 20 or 30 years ago. This never would have showed up as a newspaper article in ’97. And certainly there wouldn’t have been an open forum for faceless people to get their thrills over bashing some guy they don’t personally know.

  30. Joe Says:

It seems everything players say is magnified 100 times more now than it was 20 or 30 years ago.

    Welcome to 2017. 🙂

  31. Clw JB Says:

Pep was a try hard and he had a game changer next to him – ask him how he got 10 sacks – he played next to John Randle, then Sapp, enough said

One game against a very bad offense does not a career make

GMC will never hold a candle to Sapp, period

  32. Reach87 Says:

Davidbucsfan, agree 1000#. Hatefull morons. Any mention of McCoy is like a dinner bell for some of these Buc Fans. Spring loaded to spit hate.

  33. Hodad Says:

Yeah we’ll miss Gerry when he’s gone. For me that can’t be soon enough. People talk about a Buc curse. Funny we haven’t been to the playoffs since he’s been here, hmmm. You might catch some former Bucs for sack records, but you’ll never catch them for playoff appearances, or leadership.

  35. Bobby Says:

My God, people post the stupidest things. GMC is asked about getting credit for a sack and he responds he’s for getting it and you morons think that’s selfish? He’s the best player on the D-line and the only player opposing teams have to game plan for. If we had anybody else on the D-line remotely close to him our Defense would be so much better. But yeah….lets trade him. Defensive tackles that are perennial pro bowler are a dime a dozen. You people have the IQ of a coconut.

  36. unbelievable Says:

Adrian Clayborn has not been better since leaving. He had 1 great game last weekend, that’s it.

Michael Johnson is still a ghost.

Michael Bennet is equally as good since leaving.

I know you all like living in a post-truth, fact free world, but ya just sound uniformed.

  37. ATrain Says:

Bobby I would like to test and see what could the Bucs get for GMC…

I willing to bet nothing more than a 4th round pick..

Saying GMC is the BEST D Lineman we have is not enough.. He gets paid to be a SUPERSTAR… HE got SUPERSTAR money…..

GMC should make everyone better around him.. HE DOESNT>.

    CANCER 93 AKA: COLLECT-A-CHECK

  38. Reach87 Says:

Cmurda, I agree with your exception to the Culpepper characterization. Just indicative of posers on here who call anybody anything they want without thinking and without a clue. Whatever it takes to feel a little bit better about themselves or attempt to pile on to their point. Sad.

  39. Buc1987 Says:

Not there yet ….Correct GMC could leave Tampa and no one would notice a difference.

  40. DavidBigBucsfan99 Says:

GMC out of the lineup for a whole game see what happens see what a difference that makes. Not one of the other linemen make themselves look better let alone GMC making them better. The comments and the utter stupidity about this man makes this site joebucsbuffoons.com.

  41. Jigga#6 Says:

Some of you “so called” fans make me laugh. U have no clue on what it takes to be a football player or what goes behind closed doors. McCoy has been a productive citizen and per his peers, other coaches, and others around the league, is …..”a player that must be accounted for”. You guys want him to kiss azzzzz. Please…do you do that at your jobthis got has not been arrested, not hit a woman, got suspended….and u hate him for being a nice Christian. For all you “fake” fans…find another team. U all will try to come back next year…and I won’t welcome you back. sheesh. I’ve played semi pro for the last 20 years and this is my last year. So I’m ready for any debates….#SadFans
