Pass Rush Comes Alive

Joe had to perform periodic pulse checks throughout today’s win against the Jets.

It wasn’t because the Bucs were leading through much of the game, but because Tampa Bay was actually hitting quarterbacks.

The Bucs won’t have a double-digit sack man this season, but they did register 14 QB hits against Josh McCown. Fourteen!

And there were six sacks. SACKS! Will Clarke and Kendell Beckwith dropped McCown in the first half. It was Darryl Tapp, Gerald McCoy, Clinton McDonald and Robert Ayers in the second half, though McCoy likely will get credit for Ayers’ when the NFL reviews the film on Monday. McCoy drove his man back and McCown got tangled in their legs.

The Bucs were blitzing quite often and enough got through today, at least many, many more than usual. Robert Ayers, Gerald McCoy and Kwon Alexander each had two hits.

Joe sure hopes Mike Smith keeps blitzing. It automatically brings a more aggressive mentality to the defense, and the Bucs simply are not going to get a consistent rush with just four.

Tampa Bay now has 14 sacks on the season. Double digits!

I predicted we’d get 4+ sacks. In your face, naysayers!

  2. Lakeland Says:

Yes, Yes they came alive against Josh McCown

  3. EA Says:

They’re just teasing us, it’s not fair at all.

  4. Lakeland Says:

They beat up a 36 year old Eli Manning and a 38 year old Josh McCown. Great Job Yucs!

  5. Season Is Over Says:

Just in time to save the season.

  6. JonBuc Says:

Buccaneer BrownEye throws out her shoulder patting herself on her back. Way to go! You did it!

  7. The Buc Realist Says:

I thought I was told the players quit and checked!!!!!!!! LOL!!!!!!! So if the Bucs have the lead, they are more likely to get sacks!!!! Hmmmmm, interesting!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Bucs have had effort and the last 3 games that KA58 has been in the defense looks better!!!!!!!!! Good to see how much the play book opens when KA58 is in !!!!!!!!!! Amazing that the sheep could not see that it was scaled back when the rookies where in!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    GO Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  8. Bucs fan #7423 Says:

    We need 7 more wins!

  9. Lakeland Says:

3-6 isn’t bad for the Yucs. They averages a little over 6 wins a season. They are right on pace for a 6-10 season.

  10. Season Is Over Says:

Yes, McCoy is right at 4-6 million per sack. Difference maker.

  11. JimmyJack Says:

If our pass rush was any good it would not look so easy to complete 3rd and 10+ on us. There is no answer to our pass rush on this roster.

  12. JimmyJack Says:

Realist get with it. 58 looked liked his head was in the clouds the last few games. He had no business playing every snap and our coaches should have seen or known it.

Whatever the deal was at least he played better today.

  13. George Says:

    1. What were Kwon and Ayers fighting about as time ran out?

    2. After team meeting, there seemed to be steady effort by the whole defense. I didn’t see any DL’s leaning on their blockers today, which was a constant for several weeks.

    3. The offensive linemen should have gone to the defensive team meeting. Run blocking was still horrid until the Jets D finally got worn out.

    4. Quarterback using pump fakes and checkdowns–YAY!!

    5. Fitzpatrick has a very bad habit of stepping stepping out to his left on his throws instead of toward the target, which I think was responsible for one interception and several other incompletions. Habits are hard to break, but doing so would have made a possible huge effect on the offensive production and final score.

    6. Excellent play call by Koetter in the 4th for a first down, where the entire OL showed zone block left (taking all LBs in that direction), and then throwing to Simms in the right flat.

  14. George Says:

Wonderful to finally see LBs getting involved in the pass rush. Smitty must have finally turned to Joe’s forums for some advice.
    😋

  15. Lakeland Says:

The Falcons will probably go down today.

  16. mIKE JOHNSON Says:

We are 3-6. We still Suck to holy hell and beyond! HOWEVER OUR BUCS? WILL TAKE IT ANYWAY THEY CAN GET IT! NOW IF ONLY THE TEAM CAN PLAY LIKE THIS AGAINST QUALITY..OPPONENTS! FITZ JUST KEPT PLAYIN UNDER CONTROL. HE MIGHT JUST WIN MORE GAMES THAN JAMEIS?

  17. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

Finally, they moved McCoy all around!
One of his sacks came when he was at defensive end, imagine that 🙂

  18. Broy34WantsGruden Says:

Lakeland and seasonisover I pity you two. Hope you find some joy in your life one day. At 2-1 Lakeland was changing his name from lakelandbucs to Lakeland. Clearly the two of you after a win have nothing better to do than hate. So sad. Let’s go Bucs. Jets whooped some teams this year. When we beat them losers say they suck

  19. Bob in Valrico Says:

Get real realist LVD should be the the defensive player of the month.Like Kan but he missed a lot of tackles the lbefore this game.He played better and was a force,
But LVD gets the Gold !!!!!!

  20. SOEbuc Says:

For real Bob. LVD has been all over the place these past few weeks.

  21. LifeOfABucFan Says:

Something was up with Ayers…Baker went to give him a happy, huge hug and no reaction from Ayers..he just got up and walked off…

  22. SOEbuc Says:

Kendell Beckwith had a nice looking game.

  23. Lakeland Says:

I get my joy 10 times a year

    When the Yucs sucks

  24. Lakeland Says:

The Yucs are so good at sucking

They even sucks in a win

  25. The Buc Realist Says:

    @Bob in Valrico

LVD54 is the team MVP this season for sure!!!!! But with Kwon easing back in to the defense it opens the plays up to be more aggressive!!!!!! each week we have seen more blitz and complex defense then when the rookie was the middle linebacker!!!!!!

    GO Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!

  26. JimmyJack Says:

Yeah well guess what, we don’t need Ayers.

The guy is a stiff and he is basically incapable of holding his edge. He’s a big ole loudmouth which is all fine and dandy until you are a no-show on 90% of snaps.

We could have got this guy a ticket on the Jets flight and back to NY for all I care.

  27. Bob in Valrico Says:

    @ Life
don’t really know what happened ,but i do think Ayers has been competing hard in both rushing and run defense. He has the ability to play with power and I
have seen him break up runs with his bullrush.

  28. Bob in Valrico Says:

    @realist
Agree that Kwan and LVd are a good combination capable of inspiring the team.
Tha addition of Beckwith gives us some three of the best linebackers in the game.

  29. FortMyersDave Says:

Take the W, while the Jets are a bad team the D did show up today. I am with Broy34 on his take on the negative posters, too bad Joe does not have a mute feature….. I guess a lot of people lost serious coin betting on the Jets today.

  30. James Walker Says:

Poison, troll, non-fans, welcome to JoeBucs!

  31. Capt. Blighe Says:

Pass rush didn’t come alive McClown held the ball all day.

  32. Defense Rules Says:

@Realist … “each week we have seen more blitz and complex defense then when the rookie was the middle linebacker!!!!!!” Pretty much the same thing we saw in Kwon’s rookie year Realist (remember how LVD had to ‘help’ him, which hurt LVD’s play). Beckwith is very good it looks like coming off the edge on blitzes (not especially fast, but quick). Still, when it comes to pass rush, McCown had way too much time to survey the field on most dropbacks. His receivers didn’t do him any favors today for sure, and the Jets’ OLine doesn’t look to be any better than ours. Nevertheless, a win is a win, and it was good to see our defense playing with enthusiasm and tackling MUCH BETTER.

  33. unbelievable Says:

Adrian clayborn has 5 sacks himself against the cowboys today…

  34. Broy34WantsGruden Says:

Atleast you admit Lakeland you want them to lose. Which in turn makes you an absolute loser

  35. Bob in Valrico Says:

You gotta give it up for Beckwith. In half a season he has played Mike,OLB
and even some reps as a DE in the 3-4. Thats a testament to his ability to
pick up new position responsibilities pretty quickly. Wouldn’t surprise me to see him getting reps at Mike freeing Kwan to roam a little more. He’s got the big body for it. Now the deep dropback ala Kueckley or Shelton Quarles may give him trouble. But he is still a rookie and has plenty of potential.

  36. TheDailyCoroner Says:

Add two Bucs’ castoffs, Adrian Clayborn who had SIX sacks today against the Cowboys and Michael Bennett, you would have a pretty formable pass rush.
In fact you could have a pretty good team with the players they have cut or traded.
    GM, Personnel, Coaches?

  37. GrudenForPresident Says:

We could legit go on a run if the defense keeps playing like they did today AMD if they keep Winston on the bench. Go Bucs

  38. teacherman777 Says:

I loved it when we lined up in a 3-4 with Lavonte and Beckwith lined up on the line of scrimmage.

Why not line up LB’s on the line of scrimmage more often?

Why couldnt LVD develop into a Von Miller type pass rusher?

Why couldn’t Beckwith become a beast like Von Miller?

But I don’t want GMC at NT, I want him at DE in a 3-4 lineup.

Put William Gholston at NT. If he cant rush the passer at least get his hands up like JJ Watt,

Put, GMC and Ayers at DE in the 3-4 and rotate other DE’s in the second half.

I believe in bringing in fresh legs at DE in the second half.
