Fan Confidence In Koetter Fell Sharply

November 2nd, 2017

The data is in from Joe’s weekly, 24-hour Dirk Koetter Confidence Poll, and the head coach took a beating this week.

Only 48.77 percent of voters said they are either “confident,” “very confident” or “totally confident” in the head coach. That represents a massive drop for Koetter and his lowest confidence rating since he took over for Lovie Smith.

Here’s how the voting checked in, from 1,386 participants:

Totally Confident 4.11%
Very Confident 7.5%
Confident 37.16%
Little Confidence 39.25%
No Confidence 11.98%

Last week, 70.56 percent expressed “confident” or better in Koetter. That data can be seen here.

Joe can only assume that an embarrassing home loss, something the Bucs hadn’t had in seven home games, really shook a lot of fans to their core.

For those wondering, the final Lovie Smith Confidence Poll showed 32.7 percent of fans were confident or better in Lovie.

Coach K is in way over his head. His eventual demise will be a direct result in sticking to the turnover prone, mental midget James Winston. They unfortunately will be blasted this weekend and I made the FN mistake of booking flights, hotel, game tickets that will result in about a 2K spend and that does not even include the money I will probably lose at the Harrahs Casino…sulking.

  2. 813bucboi Says:

    no confidence….

after multiple blow outs, coming out “flat” and players frustrated who can have confidence in the product that’s on the field….now we’re headed to NO who looks to be on a mission….

the last 2 SB reps from the nfc have been from our division….looks like that trend will continue…really hoping it was us but I guess not…..

looks like 51.23 percent of the fans agree with me….GO BUCS!!!

  3. Lord Cornelius Says:

How could anyone be totally confident at this point?

I don’t feel confident about anything lol. If this team gets blown out multiple times again / can’t finish competitively then f*ck it he is not the guy.

If he can get us to 8-8 or maybe 7-9; depending on how it looks; then I could be on board for another year; but we need to see improvement across the board – defensively / offensively / coaching / execution / play calling / etc.

I don’t like to say “X wins or you’re fired”. That seems like a way too dumb”d down and simplistic way of thinking about things.

It depends on how we got those wins / who we played. I.e. 2010’s 10 win season was the equivalent of like 6-7 wins last year based on the strength of schedule difference. Those things do matter in terms of trying to form a more balanced and nuanced opinion I’d think.

Losing is a funny thing but it’s not totally your fault Cisco because I do believe you inherited a few players we could consider coach killers. I bet Glennon is much happier sitting the bench in Chicago

  8. JJV Says:

Likeable nice person but we need a legit NFL head coach. He just does not have the “it” factor. Sometimes his decisions and coaching reminds me of Lovie which is extremely scary. His first year you could have given him a break. This year is no excuses. I think he’s going bye bye when the season mercifully ends.

  9. D-Rome Says:

Interesting to see that more than half of the JBF readers have little to no confidence.

Anyone who is totally confident is trolling and skewing the numbers. I’d love to hear from the totally confident mouth-breathers as to why they feel that way.

    I voted little confidence.

    2 years… no playoff debut…. NEXT.
I really like Keotter in the beginning but I feel we should move on. We have the talent to be great but other elements are holding us back. I believe that element is coaching. It feel like another coach my scheme except on offense. Put your players in the best position to WIN, EXCUTE, DOMINATE. Not run on first, throw to Evans on 2nd, then throw an INT on 3rd trying to hit Brate. Sh!t is to predictable. It’s time to move on…..again.

What do you all think of Harbaugh?

  12. derrickbrooksforGM Says:

It’s obvious he’s a players coach which is great for college HC or an assistance coach position NOT an HC. Look at what Gase is doing in Miami… that’s how you have to treat pro players. They won’t like you but they sure will respect you.

  13. 813bucboi Says:

    wewant…..

    it aint Winston…..

I said it at the time dirk was hired…Winston made dirk look better than he actually is…..that’s coming to light now….the offense and jameis has regressed….screw all the stats…how does he look on the field….do we look/play like a team with the #1or#2 passing offense in the league….h3ll nawl….Winston looks like a rookie out there right now….and it aint because of the injury….he has weapons…oline is average…he looked a lot better in 2015…..we someone else was in charge of the game play and was forcing the OC to run the ball….

we need to get a coach in here that can take Winston to the next level because dirk aint that guy….GO BUCS

I am in the Confident category but I could lose confidence quickly if Koetter doesn’t make adjustments……his forte…..offense, playcalling game-planning are lacking.
I believe he needs to delegate playcalling to Monken who ran a dynamic offense at So Miss….

I would love to see a confidence poll on Licht……for me, Licht has been a mixed bag of hits & misses…..leaving the first rounders aside….he has hits with Marpet and a miss with Aguayo…..he has hits with Kwon & Beckwith & perhaps Godwin…
Really good hits with UDFA Brate & Hump……big hit with Bryan Anger (my pick for most valuable Buc)

  18. JJV Says:

And I forgot to mention that Licht may follow him out the door when this disaster finishes. There’s a reason his contract has not been extended. Too many bad decisions that out weighed some of the good ones. Licht a fire under his hot seat.

    Eagles: 28

Guys…guys….guys. Yeah throw the baby out with the baby water.

Here is the depth of how off some of these posts are. Some are slamming Koetter for “sticking” with #3. Are you guys brain dead? Koetter has NO choice short of planning for his firing if he can’t make it work with #3. You don’t spend the #1 pick in the entire draft…you don’t draft a ton of offensive players and begin to build the O line…and your franchise QB sets records as the ONLY NFL QB to pass for 4,000 yards his first two years….but that’s the ticket….FIRE Koetter because he’s not as smart as some of our posters here and refuses to dump #3.

Koetter knew when he took the job that he makes it work with #3 or he’s gone!
As his predecessor said it’s as simple as that.

STOP trying to look for scapegoats!!! Try and see the entire picture…again review the success rates for NFL draft picks and compare Licht.

I’m just glad many of the folks here are not actually involved in Buc decisions.
Decisions made in panic…looking for a couple of scapegoats…never produce success.

Licht/DK/Smitty inherited a hot mess. Normally it’s fine to see some improvement but when the Bucs had a hot streak last year we let our expectations get out of hand. We aren’t as bad as we appear right now…and we weren’t and we didn’t have as good of a D as we thought last year.

    It’s a work in progress.

  26. LakeLand Says:

I don’t have any confidence in the Bucs Organization.

  27. Lord Cornelius Says:

wewantguden – We could play that same damn game with the Bills – and show how the Bills shut down every team they were playing basically; before Winston shredded them for almost 400 yards without getting any easy breaks/plays; and should have had the game winning TD drive.

Same with the Giants – no one was passing for many yards on them before Winston put up 338; and won the game on a clutch drive late.

Then again you’re obviously some troll. Never saw a post from you until recently after the Bucs have struggled lol. Probably won’t be responding to any of your dumb sh1t after this one.

  28. wewantgruden Says:

Dear Lord; I will pray for you. No troll hear. You just don’t understand football. JW only racks up yards when the opposing team is playing prevent Defense. Reason why: he is not smart enough to read his progressions. Time to clean house at 1 Bucs Place. Gruden will do exactly that.

Keep Koetter in place. Live and die with it for once!

  35. Patrick in VA Says:

It’s really unfortunate. I wanted (and largely still want) him to be the guy. He’s got the temperament and the attitude that I want a coach that we keep for a long time to have. The problem is, it seems like he’s losing the team. I’m not sure what happened, but they’re just not responding to him anymore. I’m not sure why they need to respond to anyone. They’re professionals and there should never be a situation where we’re talking about going out there looking like they don’t want to be there. Not only do they have an incredible amount of off time, but they’re paid incredibly well to be on every single game and to bring it from the opening whistle to the final whistle. These guys don’t do that. It really is a shame.

REALLY!!!! You know the Aerosmith song ā€œSame Ole Song & Danceā€? Thatā€™s Koetters song as he plays the same players and does the same things every Sunday and gets the same results. Then goes into his Post Game Conferences and says we gotta do a better job Coaching and Tackling and converting on 3rd downs. Then Smith comes through and says we gotta do a better Friggin job Coaching and tackling. Those 2 need to change their tune. This song and season is becoming to routine. Iā€™m getting bored with this tune. If Sunday follows suit of last 5 losses I think I may jump off the Pirates ship and find me another band to follow!!! Maybe Ozzy….Think his Old Crazy Ass would do a better job Coaching than Koetter and Smith!!!! LOL

From what I see, we need a legit play-caller with some cojones and creativity. We were 2-14 a few short years ago and it’s mainly because we had no talent. It can take time to build a team.

@wewantgruden- I disagree! As many flaws as Jameis has, the biggest factor has been the play-calling and COMPLETE lack of balance. It’s been my contention that if Jameis throws over 35+ times, we lose. Why? No balance. If we’re to get back on the winning track we need to rush for 100+ yards as a team, play efficient and patient offense, control the clock, and play solid defense. This offense is pushing too hard, there’s no rhythm or chemistry. That’s NOT all on Jameis.

  45. Lord Cornelius Says:

“JW only racks up yards when the opposing team is playing prevent Defense.”

This statement is just making it more obvious you’re a troll.

Neither the Bills or Giants played prevent defense. Period.

It was a 13-17 game going into the 4th quarter vs the Bills; and 16-17 going into the 4th quarter vs the Giants. For one – they didn’t play prevent – it was visually obvious – if you want to make the stupid “eye test” argument that people make when they have nothing left (similar to the “you don’t know football” argument). Second – why the f*ck would anyone play prevent defense with only a 1-2 point lead and 15 minutes left? That’s like saying you should start taking knees with 8 minutes left still.

Do you have any argument of actual substance that is semi-intelligent or rooted in real logic or facts? Or are you just down to “eye test” and ” you don’t know football ” which are completely worthless arguments/statements.

    F*ck off troll.

  46. Lord Cornelius Says:

  48. The Buc Realist Says:

The Bucs had to get that bufoon of lovie smith out of the way so we could see what was actually on the roster!!!!! Now that we have “real” coaches, who already proved that their schemes can cover up deficiencies on the roster!!! Now we just need to keep adding the depth like they have been doing to be the consistent winner that gets to the playoffs!!!!!!!

The incompetent one had 2 of the easiest schedules in Buc history and ran this team into the ground as he refused to take any responsibility!!!!!!! And he is doing the same thing turn his team into a third rate joke!!!!!!!!!

We tried to tell you that the offense would struggle thru the first half and that the defense would have to carry this team!!! and that did not happen!!!! But there are wins in the rest of the schedule for the Bucs!!!!! And I have full confidence in Head Coach Koetter and Coach Smitty until I see bad coaching, which I have not!!!!!!!!!!

    GO Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  49. Lord Cornelius Says:

Bottom line is the team regressed under Lovie – especially defensively – which was the entire reason he was hired. Looking at JUST the defense; he had mostly all the same core players we have now:

    GMC / Lavonte / Kwon / CM98 / WG92 / CC23 / K37 / Darrel Revis

Everyone knew it was his decision to move Revis and get players that fit his scheme more.

The additions of Ayers / Grimes / Spence / VHIII helped last year but Kwon has been gone this year / Grimes has missed games / Ayers has fallen off a cliff in terms of play / and VHIII hasn’t been that great until recently. So all that “talent” we added that Lovie didn’t have hasn’t had much of an effect this year mostly due to injuries. Beckwith is solid but we’re talking about a 3rd round pick LB; and LB hasn’t been our problem really even with Lovie so it’s a moot point.

Lovie may have lasted if he just kept Leslie Frasier around to run the D; but once he took it over it completely fell apart; after showing some improvement to end 2013 under Frasier.

If he was such a great coach; why is he already on the hot seat at Illinois – it’s not like the expectations are even that great lol

  50. Lord Cornelius Says:

I meant Spence has been gone this year*

  51. Patrick in VA Says:

@Realist – I admire your optimism, but to say that you haven’t seen bad coaching yet means that you haven’t been watching the games. I’m not piling on just to do it, but these guys are:

    1) ill-prepared
    2) unmotivated
    3) out of position

Those things all fall on coaching, although I would love to say that #2 didn’t and they were able to motivate themselves as professionals

  52. uckinator Says:

Got to give the coaching staff at least 3 years. It takes at least that much time to get everyone on the same page and have the personnel to run it. Jury is still out on Licht. He’s done a poor job on the 2016 picks & free agent pick ups, but a good job on the middle round picks.

    Lord Cornelius Says
“How could anyone be totally confident at this point?”

    I am.

But that’s because I came into the season knowing it would be a rough first half. It was all well and good to have all the talent we have, but fans forget one important step…

…that talent needs time to develop and/or gel together.

Fans expect everything to happen instantly. It NEVER works out that way. For anyone. Even the teams that apparently go from worst to first in one year actually took years to get to that point. And the ones that are not built properly disappear the following year.

I honestly fail to understand how anyone can compare this team to 5 years ago…heck…to 3 years ago….and not see that it is moving in the right direction.

If you change things up now, you risk that direction switching.

I am TOTALLY CONFIDENT in both Licht and Koetter, because I see how things are coming together for the long term.

  55. NMBucsFan Says:

I think koetter is turning into coach my scheme. We saw how well Winston could do in buffalo with a better mix of short and long passes and good playcalling, uptempo and rollouts. Against the Panthers it seemed like we were right back to every pass being a from the pocket 10-20 yard pass. If the run game sucks, use short passes likes your runs like west coast offenses used to do. We’ve got too many great passing options to sit here crying about a running back

I think Lovie is a terrible coach however

lovie went 2 wins to 6 and lost last 4 games missing the top defensive player in kwon but

the main reason lovie was fired and dirk was hired is because Licht beer sold to the Glazers that they would lose Dirk to another team and koetter continued cohesion with jameis was the key to the holy grail superbowls

I think so that’s sad

  64. DallasBuc Says:

This is hilarious. Funny how fast attitudes change when we very predictably start losing football games. As long as mediocrity is what we are willing to accept then that is exactly what you will get and worse. Does anyone really think that when Jason Licht was working on the Patriots staff that he was somehow blessed with knowledge by association? This guy thinks he is so special because Belichek let him fetch coffee and takeout.
I admire the Glazers for constantly taking chances on fresh untested talent in hopes of improving along the lines of what was done with Dungy era but time to realize that the experiment has failed. Jason Licht has presided over and ushered in some of the most painful on-field product this miserable franchise has ever seen. Real positive change starts with the GM.

  67. Buccaneer scotty Says:

    Winston poll please

  68. Lord Cornelius Says:

    @ Bonzai

My confidence has been shaken primarily because of the terrible defensive play / lack of effort at times.

I didn’t expect a top 5 defense in PPG similar to the last 8 games of 2016; but I didn’t expect to see another bottom 5 defense through 7 games this season. That’s been the most shocking thing by far.

I thought at worst we should have fielded an average NFL defense. Not one that can’t hold a 7 point lead with a couple minutes left against a bad offense with no WRs (the Bills). Not one that gives up 21 points before you can blink an eye to teams like the Vikings & Cardinals.

I know we’ve had way more injuries this year (Kwon/Lavonte/Grimes/Spence missing most the games this year so far it seems) compared to that 8 game stretch but it’s still extremely disappointing.

I am going to the game this weekend. I hope we beat the Saints. I hope we can salvage at least ar espectable season / record; and keep this staff and see improvement / continuity especially.

I am confident in Jason Light regardless. He’s better than average at the draft and it’s a statistical fact. I’ve challenged DallasBuc to create a spreadsheet showing all moves by all teams since Light was hired; because it’ll be a good dose of reality that he’s been a decent GM. I’m not as down on LIght as some. Moreso the coaching and the current “leaders” beyond Kwon and Winston in that locker room.

Ding ding. These people aren’t consistent at all in how they evaluate the team and have random bias. cough 813 cough

  71. USFBUC Says:

Guys, Winston is not the problem. His yards per game are up, his INT % is down. His TD% is down too and to me that is a play calling issue. Who controls most of the playcalling? The coach.

The coaching staff needs to make adjustments and if they can’t then we need to move on but only if there is another viable option.

McDermott in Buffalo so far is showing that a good coach can get more out of his team.

  72. Bucsfanman Says:

@813- I was one of those who carried the torch for Lovie in that I felt, and STILL feel that 2 years is not enough to build a team or “right the ship” so to speak. Winning organizations have consistency in common. If not in coaching, at least in ownership.
If we fire Koetter a la Lovie, we 1st have to find a head coach, find our identity again, and then pour over the roster to find “their” guys. Development comes to a screeching halt and chemistry goes out the window.
I’m frustrated too but we need to stop making the same mistakes over and over.

  73. DallasBuc Says:

If your only reason for not making a change is because it is inconvenient then I’m pretty sure a change is necessary. Consistency for consistency sake is not good enough. Keep searching until you find competent talent evaluators and competent coaching. So far this team has lacked both for a long long time.

    Lovie Smith
    2014: 255.2 yards a game (28th)
    2015: 240.0 yards a game (16th)
    Mike Smith
    2016: 250.8 yards a game (22nd)
    2017: 301.6 yards a game (31st)
As you can see, Smithā€™s passing defense is now, overall, the worst of any Bucs defensive coordinator in the post-Chucky era. And Joe would wager Morris, Schiano/Sheridan and Lovie had worse linebackers and defensive backs than Smith.

SO I GUESS ME AND @JOE ARE LYING!!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!

    Bucs Defense Killing Jameis
    October 23rd, 2017
@gregauman: Bucs have already lost twice this year when scoring 27+ points. Theyā€™ve done that more than twice in a season just once ever, in 1985. ā€¦ Score 27+ points and lose? Bucs have done it four times in 22 games under Dirk Koetter, after doing so four times in 144 games from 2007-15.

BUT THE DEFENSE HASNT GOTTEN WORSE….GO BUCS!!!!

  78. D-Rome Says:

    Licht/DK/Smitty inherited a hot mess.

    Uh no.

Licht has been drafting for this team and signing free agents for this team since 2014. A more accurate statement would have been that DK/Smitty inherited a Jason Licht mess.

Dear Lord: Why are you so confrontational with folks on this blog? You seem to be an expert though probably live in your mothers basement banging out replies in your Edward Scissorhand costume. Hence all of your typos that you have to correct in a separate entry. I am beginning to think that this may actually be Jameisnot himself….with all the typos. You just need to include some “aints” and “gotstas” in your messaging. Dumb as a bag of hammers.

BTW: Halloween is over, so take of the costume.

  82. Bucsfanman Says:

@Dallas- Trust me, I get it. But, no one here is going to convince me that 2 years is plenty of time. If year 3 continues the trend then we can say that there’s something to it.
We all want immediate gratification. The problem is that this franchise is HISTORICALLY awful in almost every aspect. That’s NOT something you change overnight.
The priority should be for Koetter to give the play-calling to somebody else.

  83. wewantgruden Says:

A good idea to bring Tony Romo in to possibly show the young QB’s how to be a pro????

  84. DallasBuc Says:

Bucsfanman- listen no one wants to have to change coaches again but seriously there is no excuse for this crap. I personally think this is all largely due to the overrated gimmicky talent idiot Licht has assembled on this team but make no mistake coach K has disappointed. This crap is not going to improve over time because apparently this is a playoff team, or so we we were told. I would like to see the Glazers hook a proven coach and GM. We should keep Licht in a coffee/takeout/errand boy role that reports directly to Casey Philips.

  85. Joe Says:

We should keep Licht in a coffee/takeout/errand boy role that reports directly to Casey Philips.

Joe disagrees with you vehemently but that is a quality blast.

  86. Bucsfanman Says:

Dallas- I don’t disagree completely. This team/organization needs to start trending upward, whatever it takes.
I’d start by snatching the playbook from Koetter and giving it to someone with some creativity. Smitty would be on a choke-chain and I would be looking for a DC that would instill some DAWG into this unit if he cannot.
I mean, is it too much to ask to watch COMPETITIVE football?!

  87. LakeLand Says:

The Yucs sucks and if they fire Koetter, they will suck with the new coach. If they keep Koetter, they will continue to suck with him.

    Seasons: 42 (1976 to 2017)

    2017: 301.6 yards a game (31st)”

lmfao of course you’d pick total yards as a stat… of course… let’s get to what matters – points scored:

    2013 Before Lovie arrived – 24.3 PPG given up (ranked 21st) – that’s the “mess” Lovie inherited…..lol.

    Lovie Smith:
    2014 – 25.6 PPG given up (25th) = regression
    2015 – 26.1 PPG given up (26th) = further regression in year 2

    Mike Smith/Koetter:
2016 – 23.1 PPG given up (15th) = pretty solid improvement and best mark of Schiano/Lovie/Koetter comparisons.
2017 – 24 PPG given up (24th) = regressing; but still better than Lovie Smith’s best mark on any year; and there is still a season to be finished.

So the numbers that matter are there; and really don’t add up at all with the picture you want to paint.

Yards are a terrible metric. You can use yards to say a lot of dumb sh1t – like saying Mike Glennon shredded us week 1 because he ended up with 300 yards on 40+ attempts in garbage come-back mode. I think someone here even said that at one point lol. Bucs fans.

  89. LakeLand Says:

  95. DallasBuc Says:

87- what’s it going to take? Two full seasons and another top 2 pick? You were slow to come around on Incompetent Lovie Smith and you appear to be even slower on the other half of that embarrassing period defending Jason Licht.
Why is everyone so eager to be conned in this country fully prepared to suffer with a smile the consequences of their low expectations?
There is something very wrong with this football team and it feels an awful lot like year one of Incompetent Lovie Smith and his lapdog Licht. The common thread remains the one making all the football decisions. Wake up.

  96. SteveK Says:

The ā€œsheepā€ (as The Buc Realist would say) are reactive and want coaches gone. The football minded fans see th common denominator as the players.

Two years and rip a bandaid off for new coaches allows for an unsteady, short sighted mindset to take over.

If we decide to can the coach, we better get rid of of the players that have been here through all the losing. The only thing proven here is that these players are ok with losing, which should be the biggest insult to any competitor. I would like to congratulate the team on putting together some soft film. It must be fun to get your ass kicked for a living! Show up and show out, itā€™s not like your paid millions of dollars to play a game. Iā€™d trade any of you in a heartbeat to have he opportunity to go out and compete against the best of the best in the game of football.

Raheem got canned after two years because he was a coach to carry us to the lockout.

Schiano got canned after two years because he was considered an ā€œA-holeā€ by many who let emotions trump winning. Schiano also had Freemanā€™s meltdown and a MRSA crisis.

Both of the aforementioned coaches also had Mark Dominik, who may be slightly better than the Browns FO (of that really means anything).

Lastly, we hired a coach with absolute power, stubbornly putting a defense out there that went way of he dinosaurs. That was just not going to work. This same coach fell asleep at the combine.

  97. SteveK Says:

I hope Iā€™m not in moderation for bad behavior, Joe. If so my apologies. Please expect to hear from the Domain Law Group about this JBF.com injustice! šŸ˜œ

  98. SteveK Says:

  99. PRBucFan Says:

    lol settling for mediocrity

    Sounds about right

And I don’t want Koetter gone (yet) but I’m not going to act like he’s not doing a crap job this year either.

And 87* 1 more win will be a miracle with how this team has looked let alone come close to 7-9.

  100. Ptwalk Says:

As a coach whatever happens on your watch is your responsibility. Coach K seems to be losing this team. If he does then it’s time for a change. This team goes as the defense goes.
