Buccaneers 15, Jets 10

Joe is sucking his “W” fingers right now. It’s delicious.

How about that Buccaneers defense — stifling, stunning and flying to the football today in suffocating the Jets

They played hard and overcame an abysmal offensive performance. Your Bucs are 3-6.

It’s too easy to write this victory off as a very boring non-memorable against a bad Jets team, while the Bucs offense floundered despite a pile of receiving weapons. That would be highly unfair. The defense deserves your deep love today.

Keep in mind Jets QB Josh McCown was throwing at a 70 percent completion rate this season entering the game. He was right at 50 before the Bucs got in their prevent defense late.

What a change to see the defense come out angry and hard and overcoming injuries — before the game and through the game — to dominate. How bout that stud interception by Brent Grimes! Of course, the Ryan Fitzpatrick needed just one snap to squander it, but Joe didn’t forget that sweet play.

What is it about this Bucs defense? Why does it play so much better at home?

Before the game on the Buccaneers Radio Network, formerly winning head coach Dirk Koetter said Lavonte David is Tampa Bay’s “most consistent” player. It was a very strong statement (no Gerald McCoy?) and it foreshadowed what developed on the field. David had another monster effort, two tackles for loss, scooping up a fumble and key third-down stops.

Tip of the cap to Charles Sims and Ryan Fitzpatrick for coming up big in the fourth quarter.

The Bucs certainly look good enough to beat Miami next Sunday, which has to play Monday night in Charlotte.

Is 4-6 in the cards?

Stick with Joe through the day for plenty from the locker room and more, and Ira Kaufman’s famous 10 takeaways.

We all know Fitzpatrick is NOT the answer!

Meaningless win. Waste of draft position

  4. TonyC Says:

Two bad teams in a really bad game. Who cares? Just waiting for regime change to put someone with a bit of competence in charge.

  5. WeAreLost Says:

Some fans want the bucs to lose so they get a good draft pick lol.
You are not much of a fan if you want your team to lose.

    What?

  9. Mike Evans GOAT Says:

    Mad max.
It wasn’t Kwon and gmc. It was Kwon and ayers

  10. EA Says:

I’m not sure if this makes me happy or angry, Defense played great against the bears and after that has been very inconsistent, at times they showed lack of passion and drive, may just be a little too late if in fact they have turned this around.

  11. DB55 Says:

    Nice!

  12. Big Stinky Says:

Thanks for the forum Joe, to be able to speak your mind as a Bucs fan!

  13. StPeteBucsFan Says:

We all hear the mantra….”make a play!” Finally Charles Sims and Fitzpatrick actually MADE A PLAY. And that kept a most impressive clock sucking 4th quarter drive alive…all the way to the TD.

I thought that drive was Koetters best called drive of the season.

  14. Matts17 Says:

Joe, you should try sobering up before typing. This game was awful. Had the Bucs played anything other than a terrible Jet team they would’ve been smashed.

  15. Eric Says:

    ok, its a win.

Never look down on those around here.

  16. TeddyTB Says:

@Wearelost I’m a bigger fan than you and yes I wanted the Bucs to lose. Deal with it

  17. StPeteBucsFan Says:

Kwon just now seems to be rounding into form. Do we really know about his health the first six games…whenever he could get on the field. Even when he first returned to the starting lineup I felt he was not yet himself. Today he started looking like his old self.

  18. Dirty Bucs Says:

MadMax can’t see…it was Ayers, not GMC.

He’s holding his teammates accountable too. That’s what the word exchange was all about late in the game.

    Nice…no…GREAT…to see!

  21. Big Stinky Says:

Mike Smith’s peptalk this week must have worked. Ugly win!!!

  22. JimmyJack Says:

For once the defense didn’t let the offensive woes infect their game. Would be nice to see the offense feed off of the defense.

Still a ton of mistakes. Still not ready to compete but at least a sign of life.

    TeddyTB Says
“@Wearelost I’m a bigger fan than you and yes I wanted the Bucs to lose. ”

So…you would rather see them lose than win out and go 10-6? Or go 9-7?

No. You are not a bigger fan than anyone.

  24. DoNUTS Says:

    Winner winner chicken dinner.

  25. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I don’t care if wins are pretty or ugly, so long as we get them.

  26. Pierce Says:

I wish I could get excited about this win, but when our season is for all practical purposes over I’m having a hard time pounding my chest. I hate being jaded, but I’m so tired of being hopeful with a hapless team.

  27. lurker Says:

“to be able to speak your mind as a Bucs fan!”

a short conversation for most people on here!

  28. ChanEpic Says:

hoping for losses is the very definition of “loser mentality” isn’t it?

  29. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

Pierce right on, who cares about this crappy win perfume on poop is still poop

  30. Mike Evans GOAT Says:

    Bonzai
What are the chances we win out? Slim to none. We could win one or 2 more and put ourselves at like #11 or #12. Would that be any better than picking at 4 or 5? Still not going to the playoffs. So it doesn’t matter

  31. TeddyTB Says:

@buccaneer Bonzai what have you seen that makes you think they are going to win out. I live in reality, I don’t understand the point of getting mad at me for looking forward to next season. If we went 9-7 again and missed the playoffs why would I be happy about that. That’s a loser’s mentality in my book

  32. TeddyTB Says:

Matter of a fact I don’t even want to sneak into the playoffs with a weak team and bad coaches just to get bounced in the first round. I want to win another superbowl and that doesn’t look like it’s happening this year. Gosh the saints are already 7-2

  33. MadMax Says:

Oh, my bad, the jets feed said GMC.

  34. Architek Says:

Stop Joe – this team is bad. Please stop.

  35. MadMax Says:

Sorry for the late response…my girl just got home with groceries and i had to get off my a$$ lol

  36. Season Is Over Says:

Only five games behind Saints with 7 to go.

  37. DoNUTS Says:

I would encourage all Buc fans to enjoy this win and savor it. It might be the last for the year; you never know with this team.

Ayers-Kwon fighting as to whats wrong with the DEF (exhibit A).
Ayers also was nasty to DJAX when he tried to talk to him. (Ex. B)

Did I hear that right in broadcast that last week was first time DEF met together for film and not by position? If that is true, coach Smith has to go. How do you have accountability if you dont face it on film day amongst your peers? How do you communicate better if the 11 dont go over tape as a unit?

I am not on the tank for Barkley bus. I am also not on the draft a QB bus as JW needs to be given his opportunity to finish out his rookie contract. He has earned that much. There is nothing wrong with having a legit backup to push him harder.

  38. Defense Rules Says:

Amazing! So many Bucs ‘fans’ can’t even enjoy a win. This is how last year’s second half of the season started. Bucs & Bears were tied 10-10 at the half … today Bucs & Jets were tied 3-3 at the half. Bucs’ defense then shut down the Bears in the second half & we went on to win 36-10. Something similar happened today. Admittedly our offense didn’t put up a bunch of points, but we did score more than the Jets, we did win the turnover battle (2 to 1) & we did win the TOP battle (32 mins to 28 mins). Would much rather be 6-3 at this point, but at least our defense came alive. Still LOTS of holes, but at least they’re still breathing. A win beats a loss any day … BE HAPPY!

  39. SeffnerBuc Says:

Considering the Bucs were without their starting QB and best receiver, among other injuries and circumstances, shouldn’t we be a little happier that they won?

No, I’m not giving my hopes up for playoffs. The Jets looked pretty bad. But the Bucs showed at least some life today, and fought through adversity, right?

  40. Blake_Bucsfan Says:

    Stupid pointless win.

  41. MadMax Says:

We needed this one “Defense Rules”…..glad we got it too. Theres some fight still left in that locker room too.

  42. USFBUC Says:

What were Kwon and GMC/Ayers fighting about?

  43. USFBUC Says:

It’s not a loser mentality to tank wins for draft position in a draft class that is as shallow as people think it’s going to be. If we do some how win out we would still miss the playoffs and still not be able to address any of our needs in the next draft.

  44. Bob in Valrico Says:

also noticed a good effort from Evan Smith in the run game opening up
holes on the critical drive where Koetter used the run game effectively to eat up the clock and put the game away.

    1. What were Kwon and Ayers fighting about as time ran out?

    2. After team meeting, there seemed to be steady effort by the whole defense. I didn’t see any DL’s leaning on their blockers today, which was a constant for several weeks.

    3. The offensive linemen should have gone to the defensive team meeting. Run blocking was still horrid until the Jets D finally got worn out.

    4. Quarterback using pump fakes and checkdowns–YAY!!

    5. Fitzpatrick has a very bad habit of stepping stepping out to his left on his throws instead of toward the target, which I think was responsible for one interception and several other incompletions. Habits are hard to break, but doing so would have made a possible huge effect on the offensive production and final score.

    6. Excellent play call by Koetter in the 4th for a first down, where the entire OL showed zone block left (taking all LBs in that direction), and then throwing to Simms in the right flat.

  46. Defense Rules Says:

@USFBUC … “It’s not a loser mentality to tank wins for draft position in a draft class that is as shallow as people think it’s going to be.” Respectfully disagree. Losing begets more losing, that’s all. This team needs to learn how to W-I-N and you don’t learn that by consistently losing. I can’t imagine anything more damaging to a team than knowing that your coaches are sending you out there unprepared & intending to ‘tank’ it. That’s not what fans pay good money to go to the games for.

  47. USFBUC Says:

@defense rules – are you are okay with a team that never improves then? Because if we start winning games now we will not be able to improve the team next offseason. We will have the same quality DEs we have now, the same CBs, the same OL, and the same RBs. Nothing about the team changes without a higher pick in the draft.

I guess I am just a fan of playing smart instead of hard.

  48. Defense Rules Says:

USFBUC … “Nothing about the team changes without a higher pick in the draft.” Not sure that teams that win consistently (like the Pats) would agree with you. They pick in the bottom third year after year, and still they manage to win consistently. Can’t imagine someone like Belicheck tanking a season to get a higher draft pick. Bucs have wasted more 2nd round picks than probably any other NFL team.

Guess I’m a fan of playing hard AND smart. Winning teams do both. So can we.

  49. Pete Mitchell Says:

We may be out of the playoffs BUT the rest of this season is most certainly NOT about the draft, thinking that way is the definition of a loser mentality. The rest of this season is about this team developing, coming together, and learning how to WIN!!!!

Football is the ultimate team game and this core group being able to come together and play winning football as a team is more valuable than any draft pick.

I’m pretty sure no Bucs fan looks back at the second half of the ’96 season and thinks,”Boy, I wish that team had not won all those games down the stretch so that we could have secured a higher draft pick.”

    Go BUCS!!!

    Beat the fish.
