Season Over For Noah Spence

October 25th, 2017

Replacement signed

UPDATED: 11:24 p.m. Noah Spence’s sophomore season is over.

He’s headed to injured reserve.

Sad situation for the Bucs’ second-year defensive end, their initial second-round pick in the 2016 NFL Draft. (Roberto Aguayo was later in that second round.)

Spence opened this season with a sack-fumble versus the Bears. A week later, Spence told Joe he dislocated his surgically-repaired right shoulder on the opening snap versus the Vikings. A couple of weeks later, Dirk Koetter ominously said Spence would have to learn how to play more effectively with a shoulder brace, like he did last year.

It didn’t happen. And now his season is effectively finished.

Is surgery next for Spence? We should know today.

In a related move, the Bucs signed veteran defensive end Darryl Tapp off the streetThe 33-year-old’s best season was in 2007 with the Seahawks (seven sacks). He played every game with New Orleans last year, recording half a sack and 17 combined tackles.

Last years draft class is looking very suspect

    Hopefully not his career….

    Damn!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Welp….

Ugly, ugly draft class last year. Holy sh!t…

  7. mark2001 Says:

Tough break for a kid that has worked his backside off to make it. Hopefully this isn’t nearly the end of his career.

  8. DB55 Says:

I dislocated my shoulder and it took years to heal. Forget throwing a football bc it would pop out easily. Hurts like a beach too. I always felt like Mel Gibson in lethal weapon trying to pop it back in.

Anyone have Simeon’s phone number? Hahahaha

  9. briandorry55 Says:

    You can’t predict injuries, BradentonBucFan…

  10. DB55 Says:

I hear Molly has excellent healing qualities. Too soon?

  11. mike n Says:

never should have gone into the season that a 2nd year guy is going to provide double digit sacks. If it happens great but should have signed Campbell and let spense grow over time. Hope he recovers 100%!

  12. BradentonBucFan Says:

    Briandorry55,

No you cannot, but it was more on an indictment on the class as a whole. Other than Spence, you have Hargreaves getting demoted. Aguayo cut (waste of 2 picks). Smith, Benenoch and Bond all backups with no significant contribution (save for Smith on special teams) and Vitale was cut also. As of this moment we have one draft pick from the entire draft class that is a starter and he technically got pushed down the depth chart. Not exactly ideal.

  13. Pistol Pete Says:

Should have been move to OLB in a 3-4.
Appears to be a one trick pony as LDE.

  14. TheBucsAnthem Says:

I had major shoulder surgery and it took me 8 month before I push waits and about a year before it normal (somewhat)

…..and since then I can never bench the weight I used too and some days it’s just sore.

I feel bad for Noah spence, because his shoulder will probably never heal the same again. ….not with ball and sockets or joints naturally after surgery.

Hopefully he’ll be back next year with the bucs

  15. mike10 Says:

All of a sudden Licht’s job security is looking more and more grim.. Not a lot to work with if he’s looking for a contract this off season.

  16. Aaron Says:

Tapp will fit right in 🙂

  17. AJ Says:

I thought I saw where Dwight Freeney is still out there. Why isn’t he at One Buc Place now to see what he still has left. I bet he is still good for a sack a game.

  18. Tampa Bay Tailgater Says:

    Briandorry55

You can when you draft someone with an existing injury like Noah had before he was a Buc. We did the same thing with Beckwith and so far that hasn’t been an issue but 2016 draft class is now officially a disaster.

Not one of them is starting and the one playing nickel is hanging on by a thread.

  19. celly Says:

You know what. At first, I was kind of sad about hearing this… but given how this defense has looked, I think this is a good thing. I just feel as if he can now be able to fully heal for almost 10 months. Hopefully he’ll come back stronger and possibly, as some folks have requested, as a rush OLB, like Von Miller.

  20. LifeOfABucFan Says:

Freeney got signed up the Seahawks yesterday…I wonder if it was Jason that made that call to Ware..

  21. Pickgrin Says:

That sucks! Heal up Noah and give it your best again next year.

  22. Defense Rules Says:

Tough break for Noah, but hopefully surgery & a great rehab regimen can get him back on the field next year. Looking at our IR list, has anyone noticed that it really has 4 players on it: All DLinemen (Spence, Lambert, Trattou & Stevie T). And yes I know Nick Folk is still being shown on IR (why I still don’t know), as is Ryan Griffin (who’s now practicing). Our PS shows 3 DLinemen on it (Channing Ward, Marquavius Lewis & Patrick O’Connor). Not household names I know, but they’re all big boys (as in 6’4″ & 270-280 lbs each) so MAYBE one of them is might be this year’s ‘Jack Smith’. Or as an alternative, we could fill Noah’s spot with someone off the couch who had half a sack in 2007. Ya, that might work too.

  23. Mitch Says:

Wish him well and a strong third season!

  24. wewantgruden Says:

Did anyone see what a real GM does to make moves in order to play mental games with a division rival 4 days before they actually play them. Panthers picked up kicker Aguayo as an insurance policy since their kicker is ailing.

  25. D-Rome Says:

All of a sudden Licht’s job security is looking more and more grim.. Not a lot to work with if he’s looking for a contract this off season.

I agree. Of course a GM cannot predict injuries but there is the same kind of hubris in Licht’s decision to not pursue Calais Campbell (because he believed Spence was good enough) as there was with Dominick letting go of Michael Bennett believing Bowers was good enough.

    ””””””””””””””””””””

I swear. …….if Roberto Flamingo turns into another pro bowl caliber player after being released from the bucs again to another team

    …..then

    Then

I believe the bucs are cursed

  27. sorryitriggeredyou Says:

Heal up young man, you’re the future!

  28. Raptor63 Says:

I have dislocated one of my shoulders 4 times. It gets easier and easier every time. Has not happened in the last 8 years. Tapp? Why do we not have any backups on our DL? Licht? This defense needs some reel help and not some band aids. I cant believe a Tampa defense is doing as bad as they are. I could usually have some hope for our D. I hope Spence a speedy recovery. I do not think we have seen all of his potential as of now. Will we ever? Go BUCS

  29. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Injuries have disrupted his 1st two seasons.
But when the kid’s healthy – he’s definetly a force to be reckoned with.

  30. sorryitriggeredyou Says:

@wewantgruden hahahah totally saw that. What a mind game they are playing. Licht playing roulette with these FA signings, outworked, outclassed bucs are in the GM department.

  31. sorryitriggeredyou Says:

@Raptor63 do you play football on it? I’m sure you know once it goes out it’s a chronic thing right?

  32. Locked In Says:

Feel terrible for NS. Darryl Tapp? wow

  33. Mike Johnson Says:

Next man up. Every team does it and many still Win. No excuses. its either Win or..Bust. Carolina’s comin to town angry, hungry and pissed. You’d better be ready Bucs!

  34. TheBucsAnthem Says:

People shouldn’t pile on our GM…..

He’s not the only GM in the league that struggles with the unexpected……..you guys act like every player that comes through the door will not get hurt or turn into probowlers

  35. Raptor63 Says:

@sorry Hell no. Could not throw for 3 years. Yes it is still a slight problem. I hurt it on ATV. I can throw now just not the same. Never will be.

  36. Jeagan1999 Says:

Time to start raiding other teams practice squads for pass rushers! Either that, or we need to swing a trade with a team that needs draft picks to rebuild!

  37. Kobe Faker Says:

Tough break. Seems like a great kid

However he was hurting our run defense

I really liked Russel from last year. Is he still injured

Need kwonie to play much better.

I never seen so many times running backs run for touchdowns through our goal line defense STANDING UP!!

  38. Bucsfanman Says:

Get healthy Noah. We’ll need you.
Tough position to play with an injured shoulder, for sure!

  39. LUVMYBUCS Says:

The Raiders have failed to convert (3rd Pk) DE Shilique Calhoun to linebacker.

    Shilique Calhoun – LB/DE (25) 6-4 | 251

He’s currently on their practice squad —- pick’em up

Also note: They’ve also failed to groom DE/DT prospect Jihad Ward as well.

    Jihad Ward – DE/DT (23) 6-5 | 295

I’m pretty sure that he can be acquired for lower round compensation.

  40. Pistol Pete Says:

Living in Atlanta, listening to sports radio here, and no one is panicking like we are.
Players doing interviews, no finger pointing at coaches, reminding everyone about the record they had at this stage last year….it’s a night and day difference between the culture here and us Bucs fans, players and radio hosts….I am kinda jealous and bummed that being a Bucs fan means I am predisposed to look at the glass half full.

  41. 813bucboi Says:

@LUV…I agree….bring them in and tell them to get the QB….don’t worry about dropping into coverage or reading your keys….just line up, keep containment, and put pressure on the QB….GO BUCS!!!!

  42. 813bucboi Says:

Living in Atlanta, listening to sports radio here, and no one is panicking like we are.

that’s because it was to be expected….they made it to the SB last year….everyone ones how hard it is to repeat or even get back to the playoffs for that matter….plus they all knew their would be an adjustment period with a new OC and DC…

no one panicking because they’ve seen Quinn turn things around pretty quickly….their HC has earned the patience of the fans….the bucs…not so much….GO BUCS!!!!

  43. Brandon Says:

Going into his 3rd season, Spence will have a lot to prove. He hasn’t been able to stay healthy, and because of that, has never really produced. DE should be a big time area of focus for this team going forward… of course upgrading the pass rush SHOULD be an area of concern EVERY season but it seems like the Koetter/Licht and Schiano/Dominik regimes believe that a good defense is built from the secondary on up instead of the defensive line on back… how many great defenses were led by their DBs instead of their DL? NONE! Poor drafting and roster management… you can never have enough pass rushers… and we have none.

  44. Lord Cornelius Says:

Yeah let’s fire Light because of one bad draft in 4 drafts; and hire another Mark Dominic so we can have 4 bad drafts out of 4 draft classes

  45. Sydney Says:

    BUCS 2016 DRAFT

ROUND 1: CB VERNON HARGREAVES- CAN’T PLAY- BUST
ROUND 2: DE NOAH SPENCE- CAN’T STAY HEARTY- BUST
ROUND 2: K ROBERTO AGUAYO- CUT- BUST

THERE YOU HAVE IT. POOR COVERAGE, NO PASS RUSH, KICKING DISASTERS…..

2-4 on the way to 5-11

  46. LakeLand Says:

When they drafted Noah Spence, I said that they should have drafted WR Michael Thomas. But the Yucs are the YUCs for a reason.

I’m sitting at home watching the 2016 NFL draft, drinking Red Stripe, while sipping some E&J Brandy. Round 1, Laremy Tunsil is falling, we trade down with the Bears so they can get Leonard Floyd. We gain a 4th round pick in return, Roger Goodell comes to the podium for the Bucs pick and he announce Vernon Hargreaves from Florida. I’m sick to my stomach now, no Laremy Tunsil. Round 2 I know that we need a big receiver opposite of ME, i’m thinking WR Michael Thomas ( Keyshawn Johnson Nephew ) all the way. Here come Goodell, Tampa Bay draft Noah Spence from Eastern Kentucky. I’m trying to understand this pick, an under size Edge Rusher with off field baggage. A few picks later the Saints grab Thomas, then we trade our 3rd and 4th, i’m 100% it’s for S Vonn Bell from Ohio State. They announce Roberto Aguayo, Kicker from Florida State, i’m in a state of shock now. I’m asking myself ( what just happen ). Round 4 I’m thinking Miles Killebrew, we still need a safety, and it’s CB Ryan Smith from North Carolina Central. I’m done with the draft now, i’m cursing, i’m mad as hell now. Then i realize why we sucks year, after year.

    How is Noah a Bust?

Thats title is on reserved for prospects that can’t play.
When Noah’s healthy – he can play.

  49. Kobe Faker Says:

    @lake

    Nice player evaluations

Thomas and evens with jameis for the next 12 years…wow

  50. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

His career shouldn’t be over. He;s not nearly the first football player to have that injury, and plenty have come back from it. People here are comparing their own injuries to his, and it isn’t nearly the same thing.

Sports medicine operates on a different level. You see guys impossibly come back that none of us could hope to.

So he’ll be back, just like McCoy did after his first two years.

  51. 813bucboi Says:

    2014 draft:
    mike evans-keeper
    ASJ-gone
charles sims- here for now but may be gone after the year
    k.edwards-gone
    r.herron-gone

    2015 draft:
    Winston-the franchise
    d.smith-starter
    a.marpet-starter
    kwon-starter
    k.bell-gone
    k.clay-gone
    j.iosefa-gone

    2016 draft:
    VHG-still developing
    n.spence-IR/still developing
    Roberto-gone
ryan smith-development hampered…smitty experimented with him at safety
    c.benenoch-still developing(I guess)
    devonta bond-still developing(I guess)
    d.vitale-gone

    2017 draft
    OJ-starter/stud
    j.evans-starter
    c.godwin-good depth
    k.beckwith-starter
    j.mcnichlos-gone
    stevie tutu-IR

obviously, 2015 was his best draft producing 4 day1 starters but the others are mixed results….we only have 2 players from our 2014 draft…that aint good….3 of the 7 players drafted in 2015 are gone…the last 2 classes are still developing but players from those classes are already gone as well….

obviously you cant hit on every pick but damn….so as it stand(to me at least0, licht has had 1 great draft…1 horrible draft and 2 drafts with the verdict still out on them…I will say 2017 looks to be similar to 2014….GO BUCS!!!!

  52. Getaclue Says:

Wonder if we called Ware and he was turned off coming here from his former teammate Ward not being used

  53. NoFlyZone27 Says:

    And the Seahawks signed Freeney!

  54. LakeLand Says:

813bucboi. The 2016 NFL draft was Jason Licht 1st draft as Head of Football Operations for the Bucs.

Co-owner Joel Glazer said Licht has earned the right to wield more clout at One Buc Place following the dismissal of head coach Lovie Smith, who owned final say over Tampa Bay’s personnel the previous two seasons.

With last year’s 6-10 finish, the Bucs are the first NFC team since the 1970 merger to finish last in its division five consecutive seasons. Licht knows another influx of talent is required in the upcoming draft if Tampa Bay is serious about ending an eight-year playoff drought.

“I’m making the picks, but I don’t shut people out of the room and say go home,” Licht said. “We’ve got to all feel good about it and I need their input. But I’m embracing this opportunity. I’m embracing the empowerment.”

  55. unbelievable Says:

Shoulder injuries suck. Had surgery on my right shoulder 4 years ago and it still isn’t the same.

Maybe we’ll be in a 3-4 defense by time he comes back next season.

@813 you forgot Pamphile was drafted in 2014 late rounds, and is still on this team and a starter. Licht is still batting above average, but year 2016 is not looking so good. No way to predict injuries (Spence) or mental cases (Agauyo and VH3?) though…

  56. Chris Says:

People may laugh, but I bet my pay that Simeon could ger more than half a sack Trapp. We dumster dive for never been washed ups, at least try to sign Freeny, Williams, somebody who at least knows how to sack a qb. This front office has the defense it deserves. Can’t wait until beer swilling Licht is out.

  57. Bucs Sam Says:

Simeon Rice wants in, we should sign him.

  58. Skoorb43 Says:

Sign Simeon Rice. He’s as good as the rest with no sacks. How’s it get worse

  59. LakeLand Says:

How many sacks will Daryl Crapp get ?
