“Tricky Question”

August 22nd, 2017

Talks QBs

The Bucs haven’t rolled with two quarterbacks on the roster since 2014, when Mike Glennon and Josh McCown went winless at home and claimed victory in the Chase for Jameis.

Since then, Ryan Griffin has spent two seasons as the No. 3 quarterback, and Griffin was a guy Dirk Koetter specifically targeted when he was offensive coordinator and Griffin was on the Saints’ training camp roster.

But now Griffin is hurt and his future looks grim. He needed a strong 2017 training camp, but he injured his throwing shoulder on an ill-advised throw — and a ferocious hit — in the opening preseason game.

He hasn’t practiced since.

Joe asked Koetter today whether the decision has been made to keep two QBs this season.

“That’s a little bit of a tricky question because of the nature of Griffin’s injury, we’re not exactly sure when he’ll be back,” Koetter said. “So that kind of throws a wrench into everything. We’re sort of in a waiting game right now.”

That won’t make the Griffin family happy. But more important, the Bucs haven’t signed another quarterback and Griffin has been injured for 10 days. It sure appears to Joe the Bucs are content to roll with two quarterbacks on the final roster.

If that’s the case, look for the Bucs’ opening day opponent to magically sign Griffin regardless of his health.

That would be cutthroat if Miami signed him. They already signed Verner.

  2. Phil Says:

    Griffin goes on IR.

  3. stpetebucsfan Says:

I’m not sure this story changes anything. There is only ONE QB out there who has been to a SB and back to back NFC Championship games and he’s so unpopular here I dare not mention his name.

I guess Tony Romo fans would have an argument that he is also a player with success…and a fragile body! And he’s not about to leave a cush TV job to backup anybody.

All the rest are retreads like Fitz, McClown, Glennon etc. The ONLY time an NFL team can replace their starting QB is when they have a young undiscovered talent like Prescott on the roster. With Griffin gone…that’s not in the cards for the Bucs.

So we can all face the truth! If #3 goes down…depending how many games he misses…our season goes down with him. But again that’s the NFL…how did the Raiders do when Derek Carr went down…the Panthers without Cam.
It is what it is and we can whine all we want about backup QB’s but I do not know of very many teams that can lose a franchise QB and not have their season placed in jeopardy.

Thank you for pointing that out Captain Obvious……

  5. bucs_365 Says:

I think it’s more likely they roll with 3, keeping Griffin around until he’s healed, then working him in as the #2 and releasing Fitz.

  6. Zwak Says:

Hope we keep Griffin the kid has looked good in camp!

  7. tmaxcon Says:

Bit of a stretch calling glennon and McCown quarterbacks Joe. I guess technically thier tittle was quarterback

  8. stpetebucsfan Says:

    Anthem

So I take it you too are unconcerned about our backup QB.

  9. skipper Says:

Bucs have invested to much in Griffin to let him walk, from the little bit of pre-season action we saw of him, I was impressed. Either IR or carry three again. Griffin should be the Bucs back-up next year.

  10. Sunny Says:

St Pete nailed it , sign kap , IR Griffin , release fitz

  11. Parnell's Dickinson Says:

Fitzy threw for 3900 yards, 31 TDs and 15 INTs in 2015 for the Jets. The Jets were awful last year and so was he, but he’s a top 5 backup and it was a nice pickup for us.

That’s a great backup. We could hold serve with Fitz for a few games. Third string is meaningless.

  12. The Buc Realist Says:

    @Sunny

Why would the Bucs down grade the backup QB!!!!! If they want someone to just run around they can direct snap it to Charles Sims!!!!!!

  13. usf commutter Says:

I would just pick up who ever browns release

  14. Buc Fan in NC Says:

We should’ve signed Kap instead of Fitz from the beginning.

  15. shouldhavedraftedeifert Says:

Forget where I read it but Kap was looked at and it was determined he wasn’t a good sit… sorry fit.

  16. jjuice 32 Says:

Have you seen Fitz play-straight garbage

  17. martinii Says:

I thought you had to pass a physical before you signed with another team. I was hoping they would go with 2 QB’s and a PR player anyway.

  18. The Buc Realist Says:

Look, we want commie Kapernick in the league, Just not on “our” team!!!!!!! Its better for the league to have an Antagonist to root against!!! Its fun!!!!! The simple fact is that he is not that good of a QB, but should be considered the “Iron Sheik” of the NFL!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    GO Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!

  19. Bucsfanman Says:

Tmax won’t like this statement but, are we really worried about a QB who accomplished LESS than Glennon and McCown?! The guy still has ZERO starts in the NFL.

I feel bad for the kid but, the best ability is AVAIL-ability.

  20. Canadabucsfan Says:

Jameis jerseys sales since Hard Knocks started have doubled, and is now 31st in the league over andrew luck etc where three weeks ago he was sitting 66th. People finally seeing the truth.

Sorry Joe but the truth is the truth!!! Now its been said!!!!

  23. JAB83 Says:

Oh Realist said it first… My Bad

  24. K_bassuka Says:

Good, that means we have to sign a QB since we only have one “QB” on the roster.

  25. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

Is there an actual diagnosis on Griffin? AC Joint?

  26. KYBUCFAN Says:

    @JAB83:

Wow!!! You really can have that much hate for a guy you’ve never met just because he speaks out against the bs he sees happening in this so called ‘great country’??? So you must be one of these ppl that believes ‘we’ should go back to where we came from too huh!?! i have 2 serious questions for you…

1)What did we ever do to deserve to be hated so much??

2)If ya don’t want us here, then why the f*ck didn’t ya just leave us where were-In PEACE!!!

  27. Buc Fan in NC Says:

Jab83 I’m sorry, I don’t speak fluent hillbilly. Signing Kap is about having the best roster to win football games

  28. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Griffin can go on PUP. When he’s ready to return, the Bucs just might be ready to give up on Fitz.

  29. Defense Rules Says:

If Griffin doesn’t go on IR, gut feel says that we’ll roll with 3 QBs once again. And for those saying “The guy still has ZERO starts in the NFL” you might look at the Pats’ Jimmy Garoppolo. Has 3 yrs in the league but has only started 2 games (both in 2016 … and both of them wins). And yet, despite limited experience, a number of teams would give their right (whatever) to get him on their team. Griffin may have 0 starts, but he’s shown that he has some pretty decent potential.

  30. Pickgrin Says:

I imagine after the 2 year investment and looking good this last off-season – that the Bucs would like to hang on to Griffin. But odds were pretty long he would beat out Fitz for the #2 spot because of all of Fitzpatrick’s experience.

So although the injury was not good for Griffin’s career or possibilities to advance in the short term – it may be the best case scenario for the Buccaneers who can now put him on IR and thus protect Griffin’s rights for another year without having to use a valuable spot on the 53 man roster to do so.

  31. Fred E. Bucs Says:

Doesn’t really cost anything to put Griffin on IR; there are many ways that can be arranged. Griffin family smiles. Bucs smile. Ryan Smiles. Comes back. I don’t know if the Bucs have another IR designated for return, but that’s an option too.

I’d also not bet on a guy to give up his whole noggin on intelligence on his team’s offense when they (Bucs) are the best chance for him to come back. Kind of a crazy suggestion I’d say. Yeah, it happens for guys on rosters short term, but Griffen is much better off hanging loose and loyal. He knows the Dolphins or anyone else will cut him right after that game in question.

  32. pick6 Says:

i would not be surprised to see Griffin go to PUP to start the season. between that and the Doug Martin suspension, they have a chance to keep 2 more guys on the roster and can sort of keep the position battle at spots like WR, OL, or CB going into the regular season. they did not carry Griffin as a #3 through multiple seasons just to drop him now. Fitzpatrick is probably here for 1 more year and then the #2 spot is vacant again

  33. DB55 Says:

    RE: Kaep

16TDs and 4 INTs is not the worst play in the world.

  34. The Buc Realist Says:

    @DB55

A career 59% completion rate and 3 wins in the last 2 years!!!!!!

commie Kap cannot play in this league as a starter!!!!!!!

  35. gilhealy Says:

Fitz with the first team will be just fine. Name the other backups better. You’ve seen him with less than starting talent. He’ll manage a game if he needs to. You don’t stick around 13 years for nothing. Virtually injury free, as well. I got no problem with Fitz.

  36. K_bassuka Says:

Fitzpatrick isn’t good, with the 1st, 2d, 3d or 4th. He lost the starting gig to Geno Smith of all people. We need a back-up ASAP. Kap, RG III are way better than him

  37. Mo_Downs Says:

Kap would be a good back-up QB fit for the Bucs….40 years ago.

His politics are promoting human (BLM?) decency and national (ANTI-Racist?) unity.
I can see how some might take offense. After all, this is supposed to be strictly entertainment and this Kap “AH” is trying to raise my moral center…while I’m trying to eat some nachos and toss back a few beers and root for Da’ Bucs.

    “Hey Kap, GTFOH.”
    “You…. ain’t…..Spartacus or even..his All-World Greatness, Jim Brown.”

Next thing ya know some guy will want to start a NFL Players Union (in the “right-to-work South?) or promote something akin to financial enlightenment.

To be clear, Kap’s football ability is suspect based on what little I’ve seen of it lately. He had a good run early (1998..??..LOL) with SF and has been kinda on (really) bad teams since.

But, I would remind Bucs fans with visions of a playoff run that ANYONE with a pulse is better than “PICK-6” FITZPATRICK…except, of course, Jay “McPouty” Cutler.

Clearly, Bucs’ owners don’t want any “controversial” thoughts on the meaning of full citizenship for African-Americans going on in the QB room. And, they’ve hired enough Black coaches to pass the “some of my best friends are…” anti-racist” test.

So, that only leaves the NFL mantra: “Play Football, Get Paid”
Rinse and Repeat…and, of course, pass the nachos..!!

  38. Defense Rules Says:

Coach Koetter has worked with a pretty good variety of QBs over his yrs as OC & HC, and has shown that he can get the most out of each one IMO. Not saying that Fitz would be as good as Jameis, but don’t think that the season would be ‘lost’ either if Jameis missed some games & Fitz had to take over. ‘Course, I believe the same thing about Griffin.

  39. DB55 Says:

    Realist

We don’t need him as a starter just a back-up. And you know damn well kaep is better than Fitz all day everyday cuz you ain’t stupid unlike some around these here parts.

You really wanna roll with Griffin (1 NFL pass?) or Fitz who everyone knows is long overdue for retirement. Might as well bring mcclown back.

  40. Capt. Blighe Says:

That kid Brandon Allen looked pretty good for a project.
    KY your an Idiot.

  41. DB55 Says:

What are you gonna say when more players take a knee? What will you say when white players kneel? Inquiring minds want to know.

  42. Jim Says:

Anybody want to guess what the Rich White Man’s NFL Owners Club guys are doing during the National Anthem? If any of our sports reporters had some guts, we’d have the video…

  43. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

keep the cameras off the anti-anthem players its only news worthy to promote some questionable agendas in this nation, go sign blake bortles when he gets cut

  44. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    DB55 Says
“What are you gonna say when more players take a knee? What will you say when white players kneel?”

Personally, I will say the same thing I have been saying…go play in Canada. This isn’t about race, regardless of what the ‘protesters’ claim. This is about honoring those who have died for our freedoms, those who serve to maintain our freedoms, and about respecting our nation.

And, btw, those who serve or have died? Not just white.

I am thoroughly convinced that the first time Colin took a knee he was just being lazy, but after taking flak in the media, he decided to invent a justification. So everyone who joined supported a lie.

But, even if I am wrong, which certainly is possible, he was still wrong. If he wanted to bring attention to the issue, or any other issue, he should have done it off the field…not on the job. You know, like quality football player do.

  45. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I think Fitz sucks, but really, what choice do we have?

Put Griffin on PUP and have him replace Fitz when better. Or pick up someone after cuts. Or keep our #3, who looked better in a few minutes than Mike Glennon looked over years.

  46. Capt.Tim Says:

Kap sucks- and brought this on himself by behaving like a loser.
Signing him is the one thing that would make me skip this season.

Bucs have Fitz, and that unsigned rookie.
They will hold down the fort until Griffen makes it back.

  47. Capt.Tim Says:

Sefo Liufau will help hold down the fort til Griffen comes back
After all, He has a famous family member, who was a Buc QB!
Jack Thompson- the Throwing Samoan, and former Buc QB is Sefo’s Dad’s cousin

  48. JAB83 Says:

It is more hateful to accuse someone of something they never did based on the color of their skin then it is to hate someone for what they have done REGARDLESS of their skin.

Im sorry but its clear the race issues are a tool for people to use to get what they want vs earning it.

I don’t hate anything but that which seeks to destroy our amazing country and the God fearing Jesus Loving people of the world. Which Communism has done and will continue to try to do. The guy in question happens to be a full blown commie. Hate me for stating the facts.

Im BLACK too, so your races remarks are ill advised you dumb ass.
