Dirk Koetter Talks Receivers; Most Consistent & A Hidden Standout

June 1st, 2017

More stud reviews for the Bucs’ rookie set of hands.

Call them weapons or toys, whatever, Dirk Koetter has lots of them to play with and analyze this offseason.

And Koetter has had plenty to smile about, so he said after the no-contact, no-pads spring practice (OTA) today.

Koetter implied he’d love to see all weapons on the field together — DeSean Jackson skipped another OTA session today, but there’s plenty of good stuff from the guys sweating and grinding on the field.

“We haven’t had many days when we’ve had all of our receivers here on the same day,” Koetter said. “The most consistent guys since we’ve been out here have been [Chris] Godwin and Adam [Humphries]. Those two guys have been making plays every day. Real happy with what Chris is doing, but he can play in or [outside]. Either one.”

Joe asked for more standouts from Tuesday and Wednesday, days media wasn’t invited to practice, and Koetter re-mentioned Godwin and Humphries and added Donteea Dye, who had a heck of a day today. (See Joe’s full practice notes on the home page).

On defense, Koetter mentioned Vernon Hargreaves, Lavonte David, Keith Tandy and Chris Conte, and he noted the linemen and running backs can’t show much at all, “but Doug Martin continues to do well.”

He also called the tight ends “a good looking group” and said Jameis had his best day of the week today.

Dye does seem to be the forgotten WR. Lots of quality competition for the last 2 spots there.

Really love hearing about top notch work ethic from Hump and Goodwin. Hump is underrated as a key player here but his role is very important for success and he is pretty darn good at it. He should be even better this year not having to be nearly half our offense. The chem that Winston and Hump have is apparent on the field, no doubt it comes from all this hard work they both put in.

Seems like Goodwin is putting himself in the best possible position to succeed. Every day their is a story about him embracing the off season grind.

I don’t see Dye making it onto the roster. So long as Goodwin plays good enough to make the team our upgrade at WR this year will be a big one. Dye has been here for a while and shown very little when used on offense.

With last years emergence of Hump and off season upgrades I think the talent could make Dye the odd man out.

  4. First Down Tampa Bay Says:

Hopefully we won’t have to see the likes of Reedy, Dye, or Huff grace our huddle this season

  5. owlykat Says:

I disagree. Dontae Dye has 4.3 speed and if he has been helped by the Wide Receiver Coach to be reliable not dropping the ball (like he did for our best receiver) then Dye would be the most logical future replacement for Jackson once he decides to retire. Yes Godwin is also fast but he is a 4.4 sprinter and not as fast as Dye is. However, for now Dye has to also show he can race down the field and take down returners on Special Teams.

OTAs is underwear football, but a new WR need to be there to learn the new offense. Not a good sign for DeSean Jackson.

Nah … all they’re going to do is tell him to run to the end zone. Don’t need to practice that too much. DJax just needs to keep his legs fresh.

  8. duthsty rhothdes Says:

Id like to see djax there as well unless him and jameis been workin out elsewhere, only real excuse would be djax family being in school or something in virginia or maryland

  9. Tampabaybucfan Says:

We have turned a weakness into a strength……I simply can’t see how a defense can compete with a lineup that has Evans, DJax, Brate & Howard…..and how about sending Sims out of the backfield?

That lineup has speed….some size and good/great hands.
Even if our running game is average, our passing game should be stellar.

  10. WESLEY Says:

Dye is good depth, as we all know injuries happen every Sunday.

I agree. I think the smart thing to do in the NFL is identify one or two of your weakest areas of your team and attack it during the offseason.
Obviously we did that with the TE and WR positions.
I am still concerned about running back, depth at corner and offensive line, but overall if the Bucs stay relatively healthy I think we will do more than just make the playoffs.

The Bucs really need to concentrate at Corner and offense and defensive line next year in the draft.

  12. BucEmUp Says:

The only running back to be mentioned at all….Doug Martin. That must have hurt after reading between the lines with the rhythm at rb

Godwin seems like a star.in the making. His attitude and work ethic are outstanding

I think Godwin is the real deal. I almost broke my computer when the second round pick was made and Godwin’s name wasn’t called. I was really bitter about Evans, but Licht knows more than me. No way I saw him falling to the third. A 4.42 guy, with a nice catch radius, sharp routes, good size, pretty good explosiveness and he likes to block….

  14. Pickgrin Says:

apparently the “misplaced Stampeder” is not willing to have his NFL obituary published just yet….

If Dye can improve his route running and ability to hang onto catchable balls he has legit 4.35 speed and that’s the one thing that can’t be taught, developed or “improved upon” in this league.

If Donte could learn how to hang onto the ball and hang around this team another year – he would benefit greatly from DJax helping him learn how to use that speed more effectively.

Godwin has decent speed as his 4.42 combine 40 showed – but his best attributes are those which Dye needs to develop. The ability to hang onto a catchable ball and solid routes. Godwin will benefit from the skillsets and tutelage of both our starters. DJax can help teach Chris how to use his speed as an advantage – and Evans can help him get better at what Godwin is already good at and Mike is the Master of – going up and wrestling 50/50 balls away from the defender and being physical downfield both as a receiver and a blocker.

That would be asking a lot from the Stampeder.

Godwin’s best skill it seems is wrestling defenders for the ball. Dye is a little dude and will never, ever overpower a defensive back for a catch.

    Haha! 🙂
