More Kwon Dissing

May 15th, 2017

Fresh local slap endured

Kwon Alexander took it on the chin during the Pro Bowl selection process. Totally snubbed.

And many say he took it somewhere else from Charles Davis on NFL Network last year, too.

Even Kwon lashed out on that one.

But after leading the NFL in solo tackles in 2016, a feat not accomplished by a Buccaneer since Derrick Brooks in 2004, Kwon is surprisingly getting dissed locally.

This time, it came from the fingers of Tom Jones, the Tampa Bay Times columnist, the arbiter of righteousness who informed us that Jameis Winston was “irresponsible” while counseling elementary school students in February.

Last week, Jones typed a column explaining to fans why they would be unwise to consider the Bucs a playoff team in 2017. Many on Twitter considered it taking a deuce on the Bucs’ burgeoning bandwagon.

Ok. So Jones doesn’t think the Bucs are playoff material now. That’s fine. Fair enough. But his case against them had serious weaknesses, specifically the Kwon-dissing, misguided look at the Bucs defense.

Next: the defense. Gerald McCoy is an elite tackle. Lavonte David is an elite linebacker. Who else you got? Maybe corner Vernon Hargreaves will make a big jump in his second year. Linebacker Kwon Alexander can play a bit. After that, well, the Bucs drafted some guys and signed some guys, and we’ll just have to wait and see how it all pans out. But if you’re looking for the formula on how the Bucs will win games in 2017, it will be about scoring points, not stopping the other team from scoring points.

Hello! Through the final eight games of 2016, the Bucs allowed just 17 points per game. Seventeen!!

That was downright outstanding. What was Jones watching? And the defense should improve this season, Year 2 under Mike Smith, and especially if Chris Baker shows up.

Joe also must say Jones omitting Brent Grimes as a stud, star-caliber player was ugly. Grimes meant so much in so many areas big and small. The man led the NFL in passes defensed. Jiminy Christmas!

Back to Kwon. Poor guy. What more can he do to get noticed and appreciated? Hopefully, Kwon doesn’t realize how much he’d be celebrated locally and nationally if he played in a different market.

WHY do some of the SO–CALLED–SPORTS–WRITERS get to do a job they know nothing about… JONES can type because he took four years of typing in school (he was afraid of P.E.)

HE knows nothing about football ANNNDDD if a LB has the MOST SOLO TACKLES in the NFL and can play a bit HAHAHAH that shows how ignorant this guy is ….

JONES needs to cover the Chess Championship or the Comic Con

  2. JayBucBoi Says:

An insult to not just the Bucs, but the entire fan base. This has to be strategic on this kats part right? He’s just looking to put stuff out that will be guaranteed to keep this Bucs team motivated. Good luck getting any honest interviews from the players tho.
    Go get ’em Miko!

  3. K2 Says:

We got your back Kwon! Kwon will talk on the field this year…LOUD and CLEAR! It will be a war zone…burning rubble in his wake.

Does anyone actually read this PC snowflake jackwagon?

Tom Jones, the Tampa bay area’s answer to Skip Bayless.

  6. Casual Observer Says:

    Kwon is fine. No question.

  7. Stpetebucsfan Says:

I read that piece and thought of a significant number of JBF posters who like to point out what MIGHT keep us from reaching the playoffs.

Jones is just trying to prove his “objectivity” by taking both sides of the coin. In the piece he points out how the Bucs “could” be really good this year…and then reflects on what will probably hold them back. DUH. Yeah the Bucs are going to be good this year or they won’t. That is a pretty safe bet!!!

Jones pointed out that it’s too early to celebrate because our work hasn’t been done. Well…we’re not in Minny that’s for sure but how could we be the season hasn’t even kicked off!!!

I disagree with Jones about our work. Winning a SB is a year round quest not just the sixteen weeks and playoffs. Great NFL teams never stop working. There is always something to be done.

Judged on what needed to be done this off season…#WeaponsforWinston our work has been completed. Oh sure there will be some touch up additions for depth but this team is looking ready.

The work has been done and that’s why Buc fans are excited….seeing the fruits of all the off season work. Bring on August!

  8. Guzzie Says:

Non story, every team has players that are considered studs to there local fans, the Bucs start winning consistently, which they will, the prime time games will come, and Kwon will get his due!!!

  9. Anthony Liga Says:

I thought Tom Jones was a singer. Oh, he’s a writer? Must
have written just “a bit”, certainly not enough to judge good linebackers.
    Must specialize in FAKE NEWS!!!

Jones is just another reporter who likes to stir things up during the slow times. I wonder if after our Bucs play like we think they will, will he have the balls to say he was wrong. Seriously doubt it.

  14. Pistol Pete Says:

Maybe it’s me, but the excitement over watching Lavonte play is over.
I get so amped up watching Kwon.
Funny how fast the enthusiasm faded after 54 got that extension….

  15. stopthemadness Says:

Tom Jones is just a negative person. Disliked his radio show and am pretty much over his articles too. As Bucs fans we should be excited about the upcoming season.

  16. Birdman Says:

Whenever I feel like I have bad luck I think of poor Rick Stroud who had to staple his career to this fool for so many years.. Poor guy never had a chance..

  17. Jason Says:

I won’t even give him a click by reading this ignorant article. It’s just click bait, by a “writer” who is probably (hopefully?) losing readers.

  18. zwak Says:

As SAPP once said, PUT A JERSEY ON!!

  19. R.O. Says:

I like KA.. but I’m not on the bandwagon yet. Not enough “Money” plays. Without knowing what his assignments are. I want to see more TFLs on running plays and 3rd down tackles to get us off the field. Not sure I’m seeing enough those..

  20. Jay Molina Says:

I have come to expect that kind of crap from Tom Jones. He never has anything insightful or intelligent to say. He just writes the most outrageous thing he can just to get a reaction. If you read the responses to his column 99% are just ripping him up on a daily basis. You know what? That’s just the way that rag from St. Pete likes it. Now that they are the only dog in town, they no longer care about attempting responsible journalism. The guy is a clown and from now on I no longer plan on reading or reacting to his waste of ink.

  21. James Walker Says:

    Up yours Tom Jones.

  22. Tampa Tony Says:

Tom Jones? Never heard of her

  23. Tyree Says:

What happened to writers like Tom McEwen? When reading McEwen articles as a young kid I felt optimistic to a new Buccaneer season when there was no real hope. Now you have guys like Tom Jones writing negative articles when this should be a season of real excitement. He writes trash about the Bucs because he has no real opinion of his own. It’s easy to write a pessimist article based on the past, and admit your Wrong later. Have some balls, and write about rising players like Tandy, Gholston, Hargraves and Spence. Write about the Buccaneer receiving records Evans is on pace to smash, and write about our Defense playing a hybrid 4-3/ 3-4 this year. This is a year of hope and excitement!

  24. Lord Cornelius Says:

Lol what a terrible article that shows the guy either is desperate or really does not follow the team.

  25. 941BUC Says:

Tom Jones can gobsit on the BIG MUTHATRUCKIN STICK our head coach carries around!apparently you listen to the games on the radio and see nobody play the safety spot towards the end the year. Its not about what each individual does but a team as a hole.the talking heads said last year IF TAMPA WOULD’VE MADE THE OFF-SEASON THEY WOULD’VE HAD THE #1 DEFENSE IN THE PLAYOFFS!

  26. Destinjohnny Says:

I will take Kwon all day man!
He will give you every fiber in his soul.
Sets a tone and plays his ass off

  27. Lord Cornelius Says:

Tom Jones is now the equivalent of the commentators that use blatantly incorrect or made up facts as the basis for their negativity.

Says the O-line isn’t deep when it is. If anything it’s just lacking more top end talent but we have multiple capable starters on the bench.

The hit on the defense is just disrespectful and the argument is formed like a 5 year old thinking up the star players they know off the top of their head. Brent Grmes was solid all year and you just ignore him. He represents Kwon as if he’s just some random dude. Doesn’t mention Ayers/McDonald and how when they were healthy with McCoy it made a huge f*cking difference. The defense was basically top 5 scoring defense the last 8 weeks of the year and retained all the key players and added a couple more.

“Clearly, the offense is better than the defense.”

Um for a dude who is talking about pumping the brakes this seems like a wild statement. Considering the defense was MUCH better than the offense to end the year; for this statement to be true he’d have to believe that we had an amazing offseason for the offense. So he’s acknowledging we had an amazing offseason but we should pump the breaks? Make up your mind on whether or not you actually think the team has improved drastically. You’re basically saying it has but that no one should be excited lol.

Kicker shouldn’t be a worry. If Roberto can’t step up then Folk will be fine.

Then he cherry picks the worst case vegas line he can find. Go f*ck off Tom Jones

  28. ElioT Says:

Jones is just looking for click bait.

Kinda like Doug Martin bashing articles.

The Bucs have a ton of talent, I just hope we get to see it all on the same field.

    Go Bucs!!!

  29. CalBucsFan Says:

Yet another bad article by Jones. Just got back from Tampa this weekend after a week long conference and read that article from TJ in the morning newspaper. Almost choked on my crab cakes and martini at Jackson’s it disgusted me so much! How is that guy still employed after all these years? He’s been a thorn in the Bucs arse for way too long.

Loved the atmosphere in front of the Tampa Convention Center at sunset Friday evening, fun times and a great sense of community. Also had a great lunch at Carmine’s in Ybor City, followed up by a double shot of espresso and a velvety smooth Cuban cigar at a nearby shop, topped by whiskey and vodka flights at a cute little distillery shop across the trolley tracks from the movie theaters.

But….Tampa, what the #%^&* has happened to Ybor City? Lot’s of retail vacancies there, worn-down unattended buildings and was cautioned by many not to go there at night. There’s SO MUCH potential to turn that area into THE place to go for dining and entertainment at night if on the right types of businesses were brought in by investors. Was disappointed Tampa that more hasn’t been done with that area, you’re so much better than that!

  30. Ateonetree Says:

Tom jones lost all credibility to me with his Jameis comments. His reasoning in this piece is equally idiotic. His articles belong in the comic strip section

  31. Not there yet Says:

Tom Jones is already irreverent until he posts some moronic article like this. He doesn’t no scratch that he never had credibility as a journalist imo.

  32. rayjay1122 Says:

Who cares about Tom’s opinions? I have opinions too but do not get paid to type them. So if I had to write a column, I would stick to the state of the team as a whole in comparison to the rest of our division. I would not critique individual players because again, it is his opinion about thee defense and Kwon. An opinion that myself and many others disagree with. It really doesn’t require a bunch of name calling though.

I believe the Bucs will be a much better team than last season on both sides of the ball. One reason is it being the second year for Koetter and Smith to work their systems into the players. Additionally, all of the free agent signings as well as the drafted players should be upgrades at several positions. Another thing that I think will make a difference is the shuffling around of the OL. Marpet should be a great Center which is such an important position considering he is basically the QB of the offensive line and other than Jameis, the center is the only offensive player to handle the ball on every offensive snap.

Our offense really should be pretty dangerous albeit, this is assuming that Winston continues to be a better QB and that we have some luck on the injury front.

Our defense should be improved in the 2nd year working with Smith. Again, avoiding a lot of injuries to key players is a huge factor.

So, I fully believe these Bucs have a real shot at winning the NFC South and being in the playoffs. The biggest factors that affect this is of course injuries and the fact that it really is impossible to know with any certainty just how tough the schedule is. Every year there are teams thought to be contenders that wind up underachieving as well as teams regarded as mediocre who over achieve and become contenders. Well at least that is my opinion if I were paid to write a column.

    Go Bucs!! Fire them cannons!!

  33. Eric Says:

Seems like most fans nowadays have huge opinions of subjects they know nothing about. In fact that may apply to people in general. Politics included.

This guy simply doesn’t know much and probably thinks he does. He failed to mention the addition of stud DT Chris Baker. Or how about Robert Ayers, who is very underrated by our fans.

Progression of Noah Spence? Return of Jack Smith was was killing it when he played? The guy simply addressed the mainstream. Has no substance whatsoever and looks like a fool to real bucs fans.

But hey, most of the people reading don’t know more than him, most likely.

Let’s maintain this underrated, low-profile. It’s just ironic the national media is two steps ahead of this guy. Ayers must have banged his wife.

  34. 813bucboi Says:

SCREW HIM!!!!…HE’LL BE EATING CROW IN DECEMBER…..GO BUCS!!!!

  35. Supersam Says:

    Can’t stand Tom Jones

  36. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

Not a tom jones fan but the guy was speaking the truth, the bucs OL is VERY suspect and then there is virtually ZERO pass rush, flying below the radar is a good thing rather than be in a mindset of super bowl. The bucs got blown out by the Saints at home, and you can say look at the final score, but if you watched the game, brees had 3 wide open TDs dropped…the bucs need to keep improving and get better each week, the bucs only tough game in first 4 seems to be the dolphins week 1, but win that one then they could walk into the thursday night game 4-0 against the Pats

  37. BucUToo Says:

MDBucsFan – depending on your budget. There’s a waterfront hotel called SailPort on Rocky Point. It’s 5 minutes from the airport and about 10 minutes from the stadium. It’s within walking distance of some really good restaurants and night life. A cheap Uber on game day.

  38. darin Says:

Jones has always been garbage. Its a shame he gets people to publish his trash in the paper. Go bucs

  39. rayjay1122 Says:

I doubt very many people predicted the Bucs to make it to the NFC championship in 1979 or to win the Super Bowl in 2002. Nothing is impossible and this year’s Bucs may very well have the best offensive unit ever. If our defense can just be average, we have a very good shot at a very successful season.

  40. tnew Says:

I swore off the Tribune because of him. It is not because he’s a contrarian, its because he puts things out just to get a reaction. No other reason. The only time I clicked on him was because he wrote an article on Steve Deumig’s condition. Otherwise, his articles are dead to me.

  41. TD18 Says:

I gave up listening to Tom Jones along time ago, he’s a Pittsburg Steelers fanboy and to him everyone else just sucks.

  42. SB Says:

Maybe he should stick to singing

  43. Phil Says:

We have more talent on this team than we have had in a long time so I think all Bucs fans should be excited. And as long as we have Jameis we will have a chance on Sunday. The question is going to be if he can bring the people around him including the defense to another level.

    Tom Jones.

That’s all you need to know.

  52. CC Says:

Tom Jones is the same guy who said on the radio his wife would not let him go to Hooters.

  53. Trubucfan22 Says:

Was that article from 2 years ago? 2 years ago, I would have agreed. 2 years ago the defense was the biggest problem. Lovie led the worst defenses I have ever seen. But last season… last season Mike Smith made a heck of a lot of progress on our players. In half a season he turned around that losing culture that plagued the defense the past few years. No doubt that the defense won us a hand full of games. The offense was pitiful almost all season. This guy clearly is just a protagonist type. He cuts against the grain to get attention. Please don’t write anymore articles about this fool. His opinion is garbage and should be ignored by everyone.

  54. Trubucfan22 Says:

Serious question. Is Tom jones a sports writer? If he is, how does a guy like Ira get canned but this guy is employed? If his main job isn’t sports then I understand his misguided opinions. But if he is supposed to be a sports writer, then he should be fired immediately in favor of any JBF commenter. Even nosbos (aka Buccaneer Princess) has better insight than Tom jones.

  55. Bird Says:

Yah. Tom jones is pretty useless. Who cares.

  56. RustyRhinos Says:

Why, why why, Delilah? Hey Tom Jones. Why don’t you trade in you failed sportswriter career for covering your namesake? You couldn’t possibly be less successful.

  58. Jeff Meyer Says:

    He’s trying to sell newspapers…another unsuccessful venture…

  59. Maze Says:
