Howard Says Jameis Will Make Him

April 28th, 2017

Excited about America.

Joe has never met O.J. Howard, never spoke to him, never made eye contact.

So Joe isn’t sure yet if Howard is just a soft-spoken guy, a shy guy, or was just overwhelmed by the moment when he spoke with the Tampa Bay pen and mic club last night shortly after being drafted in the first round by the Bucs.

It seemed clear from Howard that he thinks the world of America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, and that he believes if he is to develop into a true NFL weapon, it will be because of Jameis.

“I feel very confident in him with him being able to [improvise], move around, make plays, keep plays alive,” Howard said. “I think that says a lot about him, his athletic ability. I just think that allows us to make more plays.

“He’s a great quarterback, good guy, so I’m just looking forward to playing with him.”

From the little Joe has monitored this Howard, he sure seems like another Alabama tight end that made a name for himself in the NFL, Hall of Famer Ozzie Newsome. We all know Jameis loves to sling it downfield, this could be something.

    So freaking excited

    Wooooooo

  2. KingBuc17 Says:

ME13, DJax, Brate and Howard on the field at once add Martin and Foreman in the split backfield….this would be unstopable….

  3. Bird Says:

So amazing that he dropped right in our laps. Didn’t sleep one hour last night cause I was so jacked up. Thought for sure. That titans would take in pick before . This is the type of player to match with Jamie’s for next 10 years. With mike Evans and young olineman. Just simply amazing. And they can still get running back people. Maybe trade up for cook although packers need rb as main need and they are 1st pick.
Todd mcshay already said this could be steal of This years draft

  4. Rob Says:

I’m not sure people really understand how big this is. This changes everything. Jamis loves his TEs. Howard is going to instantly blow up. Look what Jamis did with brake, what do you think is gonna happen with this talent.

  5. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

The NEXT Vernon Davis maybe, and this move will go down as genius one day.
Now, lets go get us some more players, in this deep as hell draft!

  6. Jeagan1999 Says:

Joe, you seemed dead against the idea of Howard (or any TE for that matter) when some of us said back in January and February that we wanted him in the Draft! As a matter of fact, I think you said some of us were crazy for wanting to waste a first round pick on a TE, when we already had Cameron Brate on the team.

Is it safe now to say that you agree with us that Howard is a special athlete, a once a decade type player and that a lot of 2-TE sets are in the future for Dirk Koetter’s crew? I know you were all in on Cook….who is still out there and might still be available in the mid-2nd round….but I wonder if you think that Licht and Koetter (and those of us who wanted Howard for months now) are still crazy?

  7. BuccoBruce91 Says:

Simply amazing, im not trading up for rb tho,ill wait and get cook, baker, foreman, or malik mcdowel

  8. tdtb2015 Says:

With a stud RB we will own the NFC SOUTH!!!

IS THIS FOR REAL? IS TODAY THE 2ND DAY OF THE DRAFT?

    WE GOT O.J. HOWARD?

Jeagan we are all crazy for Howard now!!!!

    Go Bucs!!!!!!

  9. Phil Says:

I can’t believe Howard was there when we picked. Now let’s go get Dalvin Cook.

  10. tdtb2015 Says:

O.K. ALL OF YOU RETHINK OUR WINS AND LOSSES. WE ARE NOT THE SAME OLD BUCS.

OPPOSING DEFENSES NOW WILL FACE DESEAN JACKSON AND OJ HOWARD WHEN THEY PLAY US.

    W E A R E N O T T H E S A M E O L D B U C S!!!!!!!!

KEEP FEEDING US LICHT! KEEP FEEDING US!!!

    TOUCHDOWN TAMPA BAY!!!!

INFAMOUS DAVE GOT A WEDGIE FROM JASON LICHT!!!!!

  11. EvolvingBucsFan Says:

I love this Pick!!!!! he fell right into our laps and wasn’t even expecting a TE but this has me Geeked with the potential of our offense!!!!. I wonder if we go Defense with our next pick or Offense and try to get Mack?

If Defense do we go DE or CB or S? i figure DE

If we go Offense most likely be a running back before some one else gets the one the Bucs want, and sorry Joe it wont be Cook.

  12. NJBucsFan Says:

This pick is a fantastic pick. Top 10 projected player at 19 and no Cook. Amazeballs!

I think we can all agree that Cook is not worth a first round pick since every team passed on him. It is now fact he is not a first round talent.

  13. Joeypoppems Says:

Its definitely an exciting pick. Shocked he fell as far as he did, granted last night was insane.

I guess my speculation of the offensive scheme was incorrect. The 2 TE sets are going to be featured heavily. I couldnt be any happier to be wrong tho lol.

Im thrilled to see OJ Howard rockn Pewter and Red. We are cooking with gas now!

  14. TampaBay AllDay Says:

Awesome pick. But I thought all bucs needed was brate and his nfc south leading touchdowns lmao

  15. Joeypoppems Says:

    @NJBucsFan

I still believe Cook is a 1st round TALENT. It was everything else that made him nit worth it. The injuries, off the field concerns, maybe turnovers played a role as well. Turns out those things do actually matter. Who wouldve thought lmao.

  16. OneBuc55 Says:

Wow! A top 10 talent at 19…way to sit tight and catch a falling star….Now if we can land Cook or Mixon in the 2nd round our offense will be almost impossible to stop…

  17. Joeypoppems Says:

And I will say this. Everybody thats ready to bash Nosbos should just wait a little bit. Cook is still out there and who knows? Maybe he falls to us at #50. Just wait til he gets picked before you guys rag on him lmao

  18. tdtb2015 Says:

OK EVERYBODY HAS MY PREMISSION TO HAVE THE DAY OFF!!!

    BUCCANEER HOLIDAY!!!!!

    NO WORK TODAY! GO HOME!!!!

  19. tdtb2015 Says:

    ^PERMISSION

  20. Doctor Stroud Says:

A lot of people were shocked that Howard was still on the board at #19. I would favor DE or WR in the second. The Bucs can still nab a high quality RB in the third round. Based on reports of player visits and workouts, the Bucs have scouted RB probably more than any other position.

  21. Blake_bucsfan Says:

    @Jeagan

It was really only one Joe that thought it would be a bad pick.

MULTIPLE times, he compared taking O.J. to taking Desean Watson.

I tried to tell everyone for the longest time that he would be an amazing pick if available. Tried to convey how much Dirk and Jameis would love to play in a potent 2 TE formation.

Thank the lord I was right!

  22. DallasBuc Says:

Has an APB been issued for Nosbos yet?

  23. Eric Denman Says:

I can’t believe he fell into our laps. He’s gonna be a matchup nightmare for LBs in the NFL on Sunday. Fire the cannons!!

  24. EA Says:

I like this move a lot, I voted TE on the poll last week, RB in the first round didn’t make any sense, go bucs.

  25. DBS Says:

I thought he had an understanding wit Jason because Jason listens to him that Cook would be the pic at 19.. I think he is hiding at the DAYS IN.

  26. USFBUC Says:

Yeah but Cook or Mixon, if they pan out, would have our offense set for at least a few years. We would be like the old Cowboys when they had Emmit, Irving, Aikman, and Novacek

  27. Buc50 Says:

Bunch of freaking knuckleheads boasting that Cook wasn’t drafted. It’s pretty easy to see that OJ was a guy that the Bucs couldn’t pass up. I wanted Cook too but taking OJ was an easy decision. If he wasn’t there, then maybe you have something to crow about.

  28. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Is that actually you Dave. For starters great pick, O.J indeed has Jimmy Graham written all over him. Not surprised by the choice I’ve read for weeks DC4 could potentially fall to second round because all kinds bs. First rounds picks have to be safe considering the size of the investment. Think last years draft, were it not for a few party pills Noah Spence would not have been available to us. Its politics because Bosa and Zek were roommates at one point wholes in school. He said the parties were epic. Do you really think Spawn was the only one doing pills??? Didn’t matter tho those two went in round one and SPAWN fortunately for us fell. Might wanna take Pop’s advice cause I can notorious with my returns.

  29. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

And webster no one is on the hook for anything until DC4 lands on a team my G.

  30. Gencoimports Says:

Great call by Ali Marpet saying we needed Some TE depth and that was the first thing he said he too! If he is right we will also address the secondary and get an edge rusher.

    https://www.joebucsfan.com/2017/04/ali-marpet-plays-drafting-bucs-gm/

  31. Bobby Says:

Just a fantastic Pick! Literally jumped up and shouted when the pick was in. Anybody who thinks this was a bad pick is just biased. I don’t know how you find a down side here.

  32. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

And I’m so glad he ended up in Carolina Blake. 😄Kwon gone pap him up real nicely.

  33. Jeagan1999 Says:

@Blake_bucsfan….Yep! I’m not trying to rub Joe’s nose in it….there were a lot of great options in this draft! i just hope both Joe’s are as psyched as those of us who wanted OJ Howard 3 months ago! With Evans, Jackson, Brate and now Howard all on the field in those 2-TE sets, we can be a VERY dangerous and productive offense!

If I was running the Bucs draft room, other players I’d be targeting would be Curtis Samuel, Joe Mixon/Kareem Hunt/Alvin Kamara/Dalvin Cook, a good OT (Moton), maybe a “project” DE and I like this WR kid from Georgia Robert Davis (he has some Julio Jones characteristics to his game)

So far, A+ on this draft to Licht and his team!

  34. Billy Buc N Brazil Says:

What’s with all this Joe bashing?? Tired of hearing the I told you so regarding the OJ pick! I guess the Joes are not allowed to be fans because they report on the site? Sure there were half a dozen D Cook articles a week for the last 3 months but, who cares. We may still land him tonight. The draft is a crap shoot at best but I’m feeling pretty good this morning. Go Bucs

  35. DallasBuc Says:

NOSBOS!!! You’re alive?! Was worried about you buddy. Good to see you choose life. That couldn’t have been easy, especially after all the guarantees and the incessant sht talk that was barely decipherable with Cook’s hairy stones lodged deep in your air hole. Guessing those are permanent regardless which team picks him late Saturday afternoon! But if I know you, you are just gonna wait on it, right?

  36. Joeypoppems Says:

There were rumors a few weeks ago that Mixon could get picked before Cook, which sounds kind of insane.

There is also a rumor that the Packers are interested in Mixon and were considering to either trade up in round 2 for him or just take him at #29.

Now that they have two 2nd round picks, Mixon could be the first pick tonight, if the rumors are true of course.

  37. BuccaneEric75 Says:

Billy, the Joe bashing comes from the Joes pretty much saying anyone who wanted Howard didn’t know what they were talking about. I guess Licht falls into that camp too.

  38. Arealbucsfan Says:

Now time to get cook and hopefully Obi!

  39. BuccaneEric75 Says:

    Billy: https://www.joebucsfan.com/2017/02/mcshay-bucs-grab-te-week/#comments

  40. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Dave You say alot ❄( and I’m under 60 just sound right in relation to You ) but the only thing I ever gather is the delight you take in mentioning the act of man having balls in your mouth.

  41. DB55 Says:

Koetter’s Tony Gonzales and critical piece in the Koetter high octane offense. A+

  42. Stpetebucsfan Says:

I’m not sure many here believed OJ would be available and so never really gave him a thought. I never paid attention to him…I thought he was a top ten not a top 19 pick. I did know that the QB’s were a mixed bunch this year and they could mess up the board. Thank heavens some teams were desperate for their franchise QB.

As for the wisdom of the choice. I do not believe there is any question. OJ has the potential to have a generational career at TE. I think Dalvin is also exceptional and can even wonder if for this team this year…Dalvin would not have been able to have more impact simply because of his position.

But as great as Dalvin has been, and even disregarding prior injuries but considering his position….he would have not been the long term solution OJ is…in fact not even the medium term solution. I would be happy to get three years out of a really great RB..at least at All Pro level if he’s being used 20X a game….OJ on the other hand can play as long as #3…there’s a solid decade there…not a couple of years. #3 and OJ will become a legendary tandem.

  43. Jackson Calvert Says:

imagine if we get Budda Baker now oh man what a draft it would be and maybe Marlon Mack or Kareem Hunt in the 3rd to pair with martin wow theres endless possibilities

  44. Stpetebucsfan Says:

Nickname for the connection? The “Bama Bros”. Grew up 90 miles apart…gonna be some great backstories here for “Hard Knocks”!!!!

  45. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

NOSBOS…glad you are back from the brink and if the bucs somehow land cook its win win for every bucs fan….

  46. Blake_bucsfan Says:

I thought OJ was Mr. Unproductive and won’t be as good as Shaheen Nos?

Jk all that’s in the past now dude. I honestly don’t care what happens for the rest of the draft because this pick was so unbelievably good in so many ways.

  47. BUC55 Says:

Nosbos – you got my respect for the way you never waivered on your guy. And came back with a positive attitude and ok with OJ. The quantity of your enthusiasm for Cook was amazing. The quality of your arguments were pretty good too. In the end we got the best possible player. RESPECT BRO

  48. DallasBuc Says:

NosBozo- I think you were trying to insult me but your command of known language and lack of oxygen has once again prevented you from effectively delivering a cogent thought.
Just glad to see you are back on JBF and not at the bottom of the Bay under the Skyway!
    Make Mixon a Buc

  49. BucfaninMo Says:

Nobody has brought up if OJ becomes a stud that he is on the five year rookie contract. That can be huge in the future.

  50. Jdr Says:

Wdae hung up on me yesterday for suggesting if howard and cook are both available, the bucs take howard… lol i have nailed every 1st pick going back to mark barron.

Joe you were absolutely homering on Cook.

  51. BuccaneEric75 Says:

Nole, I’m glad you’re doing good. You helped make JBF very enjoyable for the last few months. Here’s to you, Sir!

  52. Joe Says:

    Jeagan1999:

Still terribly difficult for Joe to wrap his head around this. But OJ is on the roster. Is a weapon. Thumbs up!

  53. Billy Buc N Brazil Says:

I get it but, this article was written before we picked up DJack and from what we have been hearing it’s not totally out of the question we roll with Martin on the cheap. The only thing that I can’t defend is the OJ Howard backup nonsense to Brate. We will certainly employ A two tight end set that I expect to be tops in the league before the seasons end. The whole trade Brate article is a huge fail. That being said I love this site and the writing is usually top shelf. Go Bucs

  54. Bucman0620 Says:

I too wanted DC. I’m happy with the choice, only because we seen what can happen with a tight end injury. I think DC is the best RB in the draft and wherever he goes (hopefully us… but probably not) he is going to crush it. He is not a RB from the SEC, he actually has to be able to play at a high level.

  55. JameisDungy Says:

    Hypothetically speaking

If Baker, Cam Robinson, Mixon or Cook is available

    who would you take?

  56. Blake_bucsfan Says:

^ Out of that group, personally I would take Joe Mixon in a heartbeat and transform our Offense into a Lethal, all-around scoring machine.

But the more likely pick is Budda, who I would also be thrilled with.

  57. Buc50 Says:

I second the Mixon pick. I do like Cook though.

  58. LongSeason Says:

    WR – Mike Evans
    WR – Deshaun Jackson
    WR – Adam Humphries
    TE – O. J. Howard (welcome aboard)
    TE – Cameron Brate
RB – Doug Martin (The Drug Hamster or The Drugginator)
    RB – Charles Sims
    RB – Jacquizz Rogers

From where do we get 4th and 5th WR, 3rd TE and 4the RB?
We do need a safety but the best were goners before we made our pick.

Oh, and D. Martin’s nicknames will go away if he gives us ~1,000 yards in 13 games.

  59. NFLNut Says:

^ Budda, Melifonwu, Maybe and Williams are all quality safeties still on the board

Cook, Mixon, Kamara, Foreman, Perine, Hunt and Mack are all quality RB’s still on the board

We can get one of each in the next two rounds and then draft the best available receiver, CB and DL in rounds 4-6 and then just grab BPA regardless of position in the 7th round

  60. LongSeason Says:

    NFLNut Good answer.

I’d go: Safety, DL, WR, BPA

If we take RB, I see issues with some except Mack.

    Cook had three shoulder surgeries.
    Mixon has off field issues.

Both would be great if they ended up reforming like Jameis did or stayed healthy. The talent is there.

I don’t know much about Mack or the others.

I have about Budda. Considered to be similar to Ronde and studies his film.
