Jackpot For Mike Glennon Looming

December 24th, 2016
Lottery money around corner.

Lottery money around corner.

No, Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht couldn’t find a taker for backup quarterback Mike Glennon. Not even for a fifth round pick.

And it seems if Glennon doesn’t take a snap in the next two games (or a possibly playoff game), he has likely called his last play as a Bucs quarterback.

That’s because there is gold in them thar hills!

Per Adam Schefter of BSPN.com, some quarterback-needy teams out there is considering cutting Glennon an eight-figure check to throw footballs for them.

Quarterbacks expected to be available this offseason include Colin Kaepernick, Jay Cutler and [Tony] Romo. Yet the quarterbacks who likely will draw the most interest are New England’s backup Jimmy Garoppolo, Cincinnati’s backup AJ McCarron and Tampa Bay’s backup Mike Glennon, none of whom were first-round picks. Garoppolo, McCarron and Glennon are all 27 or under and possess what personnel people perceive to be great upside.

Glennon is an unrestricted free agent and could fetch $13-15 million per year on his next deal — maybe more depending on the number of teams bidding.

At first glance, is seems crazy. But remember that the salary cap is going up this year (when exactly does it ever go down?).

Plus, Glennon likely has enough on tape to show that he can sling the ball every bit as good as Tyrod Taylor or RGIII. And Schefter is also right: The more teams that want him, the more zeros on his check.

Houston should have went after Mike Glennon instead of Osweiller.

  2. JonBuc Says:

Like the Ostrich Osweiler….he could cash in. And he could also flop and be benched by season’s end. I think Glennon is actually better than Osweiler. I wish him well but I also think he’s just good enough to get your hopes up only to lose more than he wins.

  3. R.O. Says:

Bills or a Jets may be a good spot which means MG8 may have a revenge game next year..

  4. Chris Says:

They should consult player evaluator Trax, he would advise them not to,However, if RG train wreck can start games Glennon surely can get paid

How do you know Joe? Did the GM tell you? Seems to me if there are teams ready to write him an 8 figure check, they would also be willing to trade an almost worthless 5th round pick, or even higher for him. Maybe the Bucs didn’t want to trade him. Geez, the two people you love to disparage – Doug Martin and Mike Glennon. But you do love John Manziel!

  6. BoJim Says:

Hope he gets a good payday. Looking forward to watching him play.

  7. JMN Says:

Glennon will win a team some games but I don’t see him taking a team to a Super Bowl or even deep into the playoffs, unless he lands on a team with a stellar defense. He plays it way too safe and is a check down king. He had an opportunity here in Tampa to take the starting job and he failed to capitalize He’ll get another shot with another team to be a starting QB but this will be his last chance.

  8. Doctor Stroud Says:

Give Spandau Ballet-lovin’ ex-GM Mark Dominik (aka “Fandau”) credit for drafting Glennon. Then again, even a broken clock is right twice a day.

  9. Trubucfan22 Says:

The reason licht didnt trade him was in hope of getting a nice compensatory pick. It would be the same as trading him but we got to keep him for any extra year. And who knows the pick could end up being better than what was offered for him. It was a smart move by our GM. Too many times we have simply cut out good aging players as cap casualties. We wasted opportunities to get comp picks because of that. You only get comp picks if the player’s contract runs out. It seems like 90% of the contracts formers bucs GMs wrote never saw completition. Heres to hoping glennon does hit the jackpot, that means the bucs do too.

  10. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

Actually this is a terrible year for those back up level QBs like Glennon hoping to cash in with a desperate team. There will be QBs much better than available. I also think GMs will look long and hard at the tape before overpaying the way Denver did with Osweiller. I vividly remember that desperate feeling when the Bucs needed a score and he just couldn’t deliver. His pocket presence was the worst I have ever seen. When that pocket would collapse it just ended awfully. It kind of reminded me of a national geographic video in slow motion of a baby giraffe being eaten by lions. He seems like a nice kid but I really don’t think GMs are going to pay him. He just isn’t good and there are much better options available this year.

  11. Kobe Faker Says:

    LOL, TMZ gossip gossip

Glennon is trash. He is a backup for a few years and will be out of the league

We need a veteran experienced QB backup and a experienced QB coach and coordinator with years of NFL experience to help develop winston

Jameis development has slowed down and he needs a NFL mentor

    bring in Norv Turner

  12. Hawk Says:

Please stop with the ‘Checkdown’ references about Glennon. In his last year of starting, he LEAD THE LEAGUE in percentage of passes OVER 15 yds. So if Glennon is the ‘Checkdown King’, what does that make Brees, Manning (both), Brady, Rogers, etc? Glennon may have faults, but checking down doesn’t seem to be one of them. And to add to the (football) ignorance, a guy named Montana was a true short pass QB, and he had a decent career. smh

  13. Pickgrin Says:

The more $ MG8 gets- the higher the compensatory draft pick.

  14. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

Stop with the compensatory pick talk. I am guessing those of you talking about this have no idea how it works. It is not just about how much he gets paid. There are many variables involved and it the Bucs do almost anything in free agency they get nothing for him even if he signs a $100M contract. Do the research please because it is kind of embarrassing that we have Buc fans out there that are so clueless about how it works.

  15. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

The number of picks a team receives equals the net loss of compensatory free agents up to a maximum of four. … Compensatory free agents are determined by a formula based on salary, playing time and postseason honors. The formula was developed by the NFL Management Council.

  16. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

Basically, the league awards 32 extra picks each year, with those picks ranging from rounds 3-7 (not stated above, but a true statement). The number of picks a team may receive is based on the number of free agents they lose; signed free agents cancel out a player lost. Compensation does not figure into this calculation; a player signed cancels out the player lost, no matter the contract either player signs.

Cut players do not count in the number of players lost, because the original team had the option to keep that player. These additional picks are intended to provide compensation only for players who have a contract expire at the end of the year, and a team does not re-sign them.

  17. Fred E. Buc Says:

Yes, Tyrod Taylor and RGIII. And where did their teams go? Captain Checkdown is a decent back-up and if he is smart, he’ll take $17M over four years with $12M guaranteed to be JW’s back-up. If he thinks he’s got a shot at being starter, go look at Josh Johnson’s dream and buy a good suitcase to live out of.

  18. Pickgrin Says:

You guessed wrong in this case TDTB. I am fairly familiar with how the compensatory pick system works for a layfan.

1st of all, nobody in public knows the exact details because they are kept secret.

Teams like New England and Green Bay get comp picks every year – high ones usually. Because they are in good position base talent wise – they know how to draft and they make sure that the balance of factors that lead to comp picks falls their way. They will intentionally not sign that extra FA player sometimes just because they know they will get the comp pick if they don’t. Its called working the system as it exists.

Jason Licht has been around and understands how this works. We will soon be in a position ourselves to get comp picks more years than not. And it may well start this year. We’ll see.

  19. orlbucfan Says:

MG8 has never had a fair shot here cos of all the ########## HC/GM musical chairs Bucs and fans have suffered through. I wish him the very best cos he’s earned it. There really are some trolls/dimwits polluting this site. Go Tampa Bay!!

  20. Chris Says:

Correct me Fred, or Tmax or whoever. Did Josh Johnson start and put up any kind of numbers?

  21. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

Ok Pickgrin I guess we won’t sign any offensive linemen, safeties or speedy wider recievers in free agency in the hopes of getting an extra pick somewhere between round 3 and round 7. Sounds like a great plan.

  22. America's Commenter Says:

It’s pretty obvious that Glennon will get a huge payday this spring, which makes Jason Licht’s position that there wasn’t any trade value for Glennon the past two offseasons seem quite hollow. Surely somebody could have been fleeced for a nice draft pick or player.

Maybe Jason Licht just isn’t very good at his job? He seems to have a pretty good handle on the draft and rookie free agents, but his track record with trades and free agency is atrocious. The only free agents that have panned out have been the ones that Koetter and Smitty have lobbied for.

Maybe Licht should demote himself to director of college scouting and cede the rest of personnel management to someone who is better suited for that role. Like pretty much anyone. Even Kobe Faker.

  23. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

I am almost certain you will be proven wrong America’s commenter. I really don’t think there will be much of a market for Glennon.

  24. Stpetebucsfan Says:

If MG8 landed on a loaded team like the Cowboys with a giant OL and a great RB then perhaps he could do very well.

I think MG8 has enough talent to simply manage a game in caretaker fashion to let a great D carry them to a SB…think Dilfer/Ravens Johnson/Bucs.

MG8 is not going to win games for anybody but he won’t lose them either. Very smart, great team player, he has lots of upside. It’s just clear he’s no #3 so we are uninterested at those kinds of salary numbers. We’ll have to find our #2 QB from a cheaper lineup.

  25. Fred E. Buc Says:

    Chris,
Josh Johnson (5th round pick) had the starting job for a short time in 2009 (4 games, played in 6) and lost the starting job when they finally took rookie Josh Freeman off the bench (due to Johnson and others like Leftwich not producing a win), and you should know the rest. Johnson had okay numbers in 2010 as a backup to Freeman, including a 95 QB Passer Rating in 2010. The point is, he had high hopes of going off and starting for another team. He’s on his 11th stop since leaving the Bucs and has not started a game for a single team, despite being in the competition with two of them to win the QB job at camp. Glennon may be in teh 75 but he’s not in the Top 40, and sure isn’t in the top 32 QBs in the league. He’d be a fool to think he can do it.

  26. Hawk Says:

As far as a market for Glennon, who knows, but if he is not a Buc, who cares?
As far as Licht not trading him, it is simple. Regardless of what the geniuses in here say, until Winston finishes his second year, there is no way that Licht could let go of Glennon until he and Koetter were 100% sure that Winston was the future (physically and mentally). I would be willing to bet money, that if Glennon had one more year, on his contract, he would now be traded before he even cleaned out his locker for the year.

  27. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

C’mon Hawk you are joking right? Winston was the number one overall pick and had an excellent rookie season. You really think Licht and Koetter were keep Glennon in case Winston suddenly imploded? Wow, that is a theory i have never heard lol. That is absurd. Glennon was not going to supplant Winston….ever!. If anything after maybe 5 years they would draft another QB if JW failed miserable for 3 to 4 years but Glennon was not part of the equation other than having an ok back up if Winston was injured. He wasn’t traded because no good offers came apparently.

  28. Hawk Says:

TDTB, there have been MANY first round QBs that have failed. Being the first pick is no guarantee of success. You know that. But I did not say he would “implode”. And having a great first season does not mean it will continue. Especially with a QB. The second season is when the rest of the DCs are ready for you. Although Winston struggled in the early part of this season, he did NOT regress so much as the opposing DCs had seen enough film to gameplan against his strengths.
Having a backup QB who knows the system is a smart move when the jury is still out on a young starter. My guess is that by the time they were sure about Winston’s progress, the trade deadline was over. And I agree that once Winston was inserted, there was no way that ANY other QB was going to supplant him. And I still contend that what you or I think is a good pick, and what Licht was willing to take, may be two entirely different things.

  29. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

You are simply wrong. If Winston failed that badly Licht and Koetter get fired. Glennon had no future here in their minds outside of being a back up.

  30. BuccaneEric75 Says:

I’d rather not get the comp pick. If we did, it probably means we did nothing in free agency. I’d rather get bring in a high priced free agent than banking on a 4th or 5th round comp pick panning out. 3rd round, I’d probably be ok with.

  31. Buccfan37 Says:

Good luck Glennon, I’d trade your accuracy for the bad Winston accuracy. Backup QB, how easy can it get, on the job training making big money. Some people have all the luck.

  32. Zwak Says:

He is well respected at One Buc Place! Wish him the best no matter what happens.

  33. Poor Glennon Says:

Remember that poll in the Minneapolis Tribune. After Bridgewater went down. Glennon was the QB Vikes fans wanted.

  34. Poor Glennon Says:

I’m changing my name to rich Glennon

Don’t want to lose you MG, but if you leave, I don’t blame you and I hope you break someone’s bank.
