Tug Of War

Clashing philosophies.

Clashing philosophies.

In some ways, this reminds Joe of the wars Brett Favre and Mike Holmgren used to wage with each other.

Jameis, not unlike Favre, is a gunslinger. He wants to rifle the ball downfield and do whatever it takes to score. If that means going Larry Csonka and crashing through defenders or scrambling like a wildman, so be it.

(In some ways, when Jameis scrambles, he really does remind Joe of Favre.)

Koetter, like Holmgren, is trying to channel that drive of Jameis’ into being more of a smart quarterback.

Last Thursday was an example. Jameis, who frankly should not have been in the game in mop-up time against the Dixie Chicks, tried to run through tacklers to score a two-point conversion and, hurt his knee in the process.

Koetter this week noted Jameis has to learn to throw the ball away rather than get beat up.

Jameis doesn’t see it that way.

He believes job No. 1 is to score or he is letting his teammates down. Koetter tries to tell Jameis not being on the field due to a needless injury is letting the team down.

Apparently, this is an ongoing conversation and it seems, hearing Jameis’ words from yesterday, the two agree to disagree.

“We go through that same discussion almost every week,” Jameis said of Koetter telling him to be smart with his body. “We’re just going to keep playing and just when I take those hits, I just have to start getting in the end zone, so it can be worth it.”

Joe absolutely loves Jameis’ mentality and drive but Koetter also is completely in the right. The team needs Jameis. Live to fight another down. Getting blown up on a useless two-point conversion in a blowout does no one any good.

Now why Jameis was in the game to begin with, that’s a whole different animal.

Jameis was in the game because he still needs the reps and will until he has completed his development as an NFL quarterback. Ask any of the QB experts if they think James is a complete player yet. when the majority answer yes then take James out of the game when the game is a blowout. When James is a complete NFL QB the Bucs will be ahead when he comes out of the game.

Free agent class 2018. Bring in deandre hopkins or allen robinson to play across mike evans. Jameis would love love love that! Also bring in haha clinton-dix. First round pick safety from michigan jabril peppers. 2nd round pick a defensive tackle worthy of the draft position. Put that together and get on the field and get to work and everyone buy into the system and bring a winning mentality and this team will be back to the playoffs

Such a dumb comment Nole! So the extra 5 minutes of play during mop up time vs a vanilla defense just letting th clock down is necessary for Jameis. If he gets seriously hurt and misses half the season think that might be a little more stunting to his development. SMH!

I’m more worried about the 1st three quarters of football that actually matter. If they want to play him in garbage time then so be it, just try for once to make it be padding his stats in the garbage time of a game they’re going to win.
Try messing with the drive of the most driven player on this team and you’re begging for it to backfire in your face.
What they should be worried about is making his risks be worth it by fielding a roster good enough to compete in every game. Right now they’re just wasting precious years of he and Evans career with this garbage.

I have watched Favre my entire life. He was the reason i love football. There is absolutely nothing similar to Winston and his playing style other than forcing passes. Passion wise they are pretty equal. On the run or rollout u could not be more wrong Joe. Anytime pressure came near Brett he threw the ball, and many times he was passed the line of scrimmage. Farve also made his wide receivers look good regardless of talent over almost two decades. Mike evans is great on his own and as you have said yourself there isnt anyone else who can win matchups on their own.
