Sometimes, The Eyes Lie

November 18th, 2016

eyesLike the rest of you, Joe watched the Bucs beat the Bears last week.

Just like the rest of you, Joe saw much-maligned Bucs safety Chris Conte get a pick-six. Joe also saw Conte lead the team with seven tackles. Joe thought Conte played so well, Joe gave Conte a gameball.

But Joe is not a film guru like Andy Benoit of theMMQB.com. Each week Benoit scours film and gives his analysis. This week, Benoit basically writes that Joe’s eyes are lying. Benoit, save for a few plays, thought Conte stunk up the joint last week.

@Andy_Benoit: #Bucs #Bears Film: Conte very poor job in run support. Missed several clean tackles in middle of the field.

It’s hard to believe a guy who led the team in tackles (a safety leading a team in tackles rarely is a good thing) could have had a lousy day in run support. But perhaps the Bears saw on past film what Benoit did this week — and figured if they could get to the second level up the middle on runs, that they could exploit Conte?

This is all very interesting to Joe.

I remember Conte missing some tackles. We still need an upgrade there next year.

Either way that pick 6 was awesome and was happy as hell for the guy to have that moment

  2. Patrick in VA Says:

History sides with Benoit. It’s a lot more believable that he actually had a bad game with a few flashes of decency rather than saying that he magically just figured out how to play top notch football

  3. Chris Says:

If that guy weighs above 200 lbs …… he looked like a Publix bag boy in the picture Joe provided from the press conference. Easy to see why he misses tackles

  4. Chris Says:

Love the pic of Eye Gore Joe

  5. Bucsfanman Says:

My eyes told me that he had a decent game. I agree with Lord C, that’s still a position of upgrade.

No talk of LVD?! Where is Lavonte? We’re OK calling out Conte and GMC at every chance. Did I read Sunday’s stat sheet correctly? 1 tackle and 1 assist?

I really don’t care about individual stats. The defense, overall, played way better against Chicago, and we won. Conte’s not the only one whiffing on tackles Benoit.

  6. duthsty rhothdes Says:

misses those tackles on quik passes maclin and kelce gonna fill up the stat line

  7. Kobe Faker Says:

Whats up with all this pent up hate for Chris Conte?

I think im actually beginning to think its envy. All the posters here can see Chris is pretty good looking, buff and probably does very well with the ladies

*I, Kobe Faker, countless times have been commended that i look exactly like Chris Conte naked

  8. Chris Says:

Because Kobe, he’s giving the infamous Rod “toast ” Jones a run for his money

  9. LakeLandBuc Says:

Conte had missed tackles against Jordan Howard, and the Hail Mary was on Conte.

  10. LakeLandBuc Says:

Conte should follow in his Grandfather ( Richard Conte) footsteps and go into acting.

  11. Bucsfanman Says:

@LakeLand- Where’s your positivity dude?! I saw 3 Bucs all in the same place. They got the score! Big Whoop! We got the W. Besides, the pick 6 balances it out!

  12. Lokog Says:

But the eye in the sky doesnt

  13. Defense Rules Says:

@Bucsfanman … “No talk of LVD?! Where is Lavonte? We’re OK calling out Conte and GMC at every chance. Did I read Sunday’s stat sheet correctly? 1 tackle and 1 assist?” You read it right Bucsfanman, but for the most part the Bears ran away from Lavonte … just like the Raiders did. Of the 20 Bears runs, 13 were from the Center and to the right (for 93 yds); only 7 were from the Left Guard and left (for 27 yds, but 13 of those came on 1 play over the Left Guard). Bears found the Bucs run-stop weakness … just like the Raiders did: run close to the middle right. What surprises me most is that the Bears didn’t run more than they did.

  14. Dick Butkiss Says:

Maybe if the linebackers weren’t getting blocked out of their gaps we wouldn’t have to rely on Conte chasing everybody down in the 2nd and 3rd levels. Conte takes a lot of heat. He is a solid player.

  15. Etzel Says:

I’ll take a bad game from Conte against the run over a bad game from Conte against the pass any day.

  16. celly Says:

Not that Conte is a great player…

…but I’d feel more comfortable upgrading the safety position opposite Conte and rolling with Conte for next season.

  17. Fred E. Buc Says:

I am just so disappointed this article doesn’t mention the Mike Evans national anthem issue. After all, the Tampa Bay Times great Constitutional Analysts wrote a total of 8 articles between five reporters over three days. Joe, THANK GOD you are covering Bucs football! I’d lose my mind if we didn’t have honest brokers out there. Yes, Conte needs to improve and any time safeties lead the D in anything other than picks it’s not good, especially when they ALSO lead in missed tackles. Go Bucs!

  18. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

A win is a win. Long as players make plays when it counts, I don’t care.

  19. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Lavonte has been invisible for a couple years now. I think it is time to consider replacing him. He certainly has not earned a good contract.

  20. Warrenfb12 Says:

Put Tandy or smith back there. We all have been saying conte sucks for a while now

  21. R.O. Says:

All you had to do was actually watch the game and see the missed tackles. Week after week.

  22. Joe Says:

Maybe if the linebackers weren’t getting blocked out of their gaps we wouldn’t have to rely on Conte chasing everybody down in the 2nd and 3rd levels.

    ^^^This too 🙂

I’ll take a bad game from Conte against the run over a bad game from Conte against the pass any day.

    Bingo.

  25. Supersam Says:

The dude had an awesome game changing pick 6 led the team in tackles and makes peanuts compared to Guys like Lavonte David who I’m not even sure played that game cuz I don’t recall one play he made, and were bashing the kid for missing a few “open field tackles” pleaseeeeeeee

  26. Buc1987 Says:

Or perhaps they have plenty of game film on Conte because he used to be a Bear.

  27. ATrain Says:

Maybe if the Million Dollar Man made some stops in the backfield or on the line or the line backers made a tackle the Safety would be in the position to tackle the TB up the middle.

  28. Bob in valrico Says:

Anyway you look at it COnte’s pick 6 changed the momentum of the game and got the offense into the game.
some of the runs up the middle went right through the gap left by D- lineman on stunts. We were not filling the gap properly. Noticed Kwan getting blocked out of the play o one of those plays.

  29. Trubucfan22 Says:

For conte, last week was like a career highlight game. We don’t expect much from conte, so when he does make a play or 2 it really stands out. Obviously a pick 6 out weighs a couple of missed tackles that gave the opposing offense an extra few yards. Im not really going to sink so low as to knock conte down from his best game as a buc. Let the guy enjoy it, and hopefully he can put another. Ouple of good plaus together next week too.

  30. SB with Jameis Says:

At this point in the Season I choose to celebrate the positives rather than the negatives. Conte scored 6 points!! That is positive enough for me.

  31. RachelWatson'sthong Says:

Thank you SB with Jameis. Me too. I would be ecstatic with 2 wins in a row. It’s been so long.
side note, I loved Marty Feldman and that was a great movie. If Marty was a QB a DB could never tell if he was staring down his receiver.

  32. Joe Says:

Love the pic of Eye Gore Joe

    🙂

  33. SteelStudBuc Says:

I think the Bucs should try to keep Conte around next season. He makes good plays from time to time. Hes familiar with the scheme. However… Theres gotta be somebody better to be #1.

  34. SB with Jameis Says:

Joe, I like that you saw what I saw as well as Butkiss that our LB’s are being taken out on running plays. This needs to be cleaned up. I think we are not playing aggressive enough. As Soon as our DBs stopped playing 8 to 10 yards of the LOS this weekend we happened upon some Ints. Look at both of the first quarter Ints. Grimes and Conte both were Pressing and ran the route for the receiver. If they can fix this with Kwon and LVD then we are in for some real magic here in Bucland.
Thanks for your coverage man. #Appreciation.

  35. SB with Jameis Says:

@RachelWatson’sthong………… I know it sounds weird but, could I like, sniff you or something? Ok nvm.

  36. Kobe Faker Says:

    Wtf

I said i look like Chris Conte naked and now we have

Thongs and sniffing in this thread

  37. Warren Says:

Yeah not quite getting the Conte hate either. The guy isn’t Sabby Piscatelli. He’s not great but does every single position really need to be? Want to know why he and the rest of the secondary had a decent game? We FINALLY had pressure up front on the QB with a healthy D Line and a nice mix of LB blitzes forcing quick (and often stupid) decisions by Cutler

  38. RachelWatson'sthong Says:

I’m a dude. But Hell WTF, Go for it. Why would a chick (hetero) want to be Rachel’s butt floss?

  39. BucTrooper Says:

Conte is a dumpster fire. When he got that pick-6 I stood up and yelled “THAT DOESN’T MEAN YOU STILL DON’T SUCK!”

And he has the nerve to TAUNT the Bears after the game? Dude, they cut you because you’re TERRIBLE. You’re STILL TERRIBLE. And you think you got one over on them? They’re probably excited you’re gone and they could run at your weak ass all day.

I will post this on every Conte post: You cannot convince me that there isn’t a safety on another practice squad that is better than him that the Bucs couldn’t bring in. There’s someone out there that’s better merely by accident.

Is BB a Bucs fan? Sometimes, I wonder????????

  41. America's Commenter Says:

Things would be so much different if the Bucs could find a safety who could tackle. You know, somebody like Mark Barron? I wonder if Jason Licht has any comments on that fantastic trade.
