“Let’s Not Jump To Conclusions On One Football Game”

November 2nd, 2016

Johnny Holton

Patience is a lost art in the NFL — and nearly everyone associated with the NFL is guilty.

Joe chatted with Team Glazer about this subject in March.

It’s the nature of society. Impatience is rampant, but it’s not prevalent among NFL coaches. They are a more steadying force. Well, at least the good coaches are.

Defensive coordinator Mike Smith was peppered with questions yesterday at One Buc Palace, and about midway through his media session he was hit with an inquiry about cornerback Hey Jude Adjei-Barimah.

Smith answered the question but rolled into a speech on patience.

“Let’s not jump to conclusions on one football game,” Smith said. “Let’s wait until the season plays out and see where we’re at. I think, you know, we all are quick to react and we’re in one-week cycles and that’s the way — hey, that’s world that we live in. And we’re glad that this cycle is about five days; I can assure you.”

Joe gets Smith calling for reason and logic when assessing his new Bucs defense. However, Smith is just not going to get it on any grand scale from Bucs fans and media.

Joe is convinced Bucs fans are too beaten down by years of losing. That’s put them in a constant hyper-emotional state. A win is euphoria. A loss is a reason to freakout. Patience almost seems to have no place.

Perhaps it’s better this way. The alternative is indifference.

    Perfectly written!

  2. Kstoges Says:

Yea we really are in a hyper emotional state just read these comments on here everyday it’s insanity how many people freak out over something one day and the next are all love the only way it stops is winning boys.

  3. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

Five years ago I took my family to the infamous Lions game where we lost on a horrible pass interference call on our TE. Cost me $500 for tickets, food, parking etc. A year later I spent a similar amount on the Panthers game where our guys simply didn’t care. The Bucs need to earn patience. They stole it from years ago.

  4. Aaron Says:

I just don’t see how teams that watch that tape – don’t go no huddle / 4 Wr and just throw and throw…

  5. Clodhopper Says:

One game?? Get bent, noob. We’ve been hearing that for 6 years. The “One game” ship has sailed many moons ago!!

  6. Jason Says:

One game you love this team and think they will be taking a step forward. Next game they lose and some fans say everyone needs to be fired. Still holding for preseason prediction of 7 – 9 season with hopefully four in division games.

  7. Buc-Naked Says:

Yep! Way too quick on developing a “Sky is falling” outlook! We also need to lay off Aguayo. Just look at Janikowski’s rookie numbers. 22 of 32 – 68% vs Aguayo is 7 of 15 – 58%. However, take a closer look at the number considering that extra points are essentially a 33 yard field goal. He is 20 of 27 – 74% when adding his extra points. (You can’t add the old extra point numbers as they were “gimmes”) HE WILL BE JUST FINE!!!! GO BUCS!!!!!!

  8. orlbucfan Says:

Jury’s still out on Smith here. Bucs will go 8-8 fer sher this year. I am one of the patient ones. Go Bucs–Home Win Tomorrow Night!!

  9. Miko Says:

well said, exactly where i’m at [hyper-emotional]…no middle ground…the wins are euphoric! the losses are the end of the world…

  10. LakeLandBuc Says:

It’s a shame that fans will settle for a (successful) 8-8 season. That’s how bad the expectations are in Tampa. I serious doubt that we win 7 games this season, but hey we are the YUCS. The Raiders and the Rams handled us the game on a silver platter, and we refuse to take it. They did everything in their power to give us the game, and we did everything in our power to give it back to them. It’s like we are not trying to win, how can you support a team like this?

As many others have mentioned– well said!

  12. Buc1987 Says:

Joe…a win to me is “epic” these days.

Every good play is “epic” to me. ( I wait for flags like the rest of us)

    Great plays? Colossal.

Heat on the QB is colossal to me too. On both sides of the ball. (Mostly D)

Overthrows by #3 are disastrous. Defensive holding penalties are too.

The losses? Eh, I’m a long time Bucs fan. I can deal, but these close ones really sting. Chance after chance for the Rams and Raiders game to go the other way. Give me those 2 wins back. I can’t have them though can I?

    So I move on…

I still have faith in this team, cause I’m a Bucs fan and every win is epic.

  13. Buc1987 Says:

Does that answer your question Lakeland?

Fans still support the Lions, the Browns etc.

    It’s tough, but we do.

  14. Clodhopper Says:

One game. SMDH. I just cant get over it. This country has lost the ability to see things as a whole and in context. The way this defense got burned last week did not happen in a vacuum. This is not a one time thing. This is a seven year pattern. minus one year. Just like a few weeks ago when Koetter said not to say same old Bucs too soon. It blows my mind that they just expect us to sit calmly and forget almost an entire decade of incompetence. Lets have a 3 game winning streak once before you pull out that stupid line of thinking that is nothing more than an insult to the intelligence of fans.

  15. Tampa Tony Says:

Patience? This team has been rebuilding since 2009 and still have a roster with more holes than a game of Chinese checkers

  16. Buccfan37 Says:

Bucs fans have patience out the ying yang. A lifetime of patience. Wait is our middle name. The more things change the more they stay the same. Losing is habitual. It is weary tiresome and old. This Bucs level of losing is mind numbing.

  17. BucinJAX Says:

LakelandBuc, does your wife, kids, or other family always have to do well to get your support?

  18. Warrenfb12 Says:

I think the thing that drive fans nuts is the approach that we see year in and year out. Bucs defense lines up and our CBs are ten yards off the receiver. Furthermore, our two speedy linebackers are not being sent on blitzes. The average fan can see we aren’t getting pressure on the QB. We have also seen this issue pop up year in and year out. Who cares if they are putting corners on an island, they are getting beat anyway.

Of note, Andy Benoit indicates that Bucs remain in nickel defense even when most teams would meet the offensive formations with a dime look. So Bucs trust Kwon and Lavonte more than their reserve corners in coverage? Yikes.

  19. D-Rome Says:

Mike Smith is attempting to tell the fan base to relax.

Sorry, that only works when the QB of a franchise that’s been a winner for decades tells the fan base to R-E-L-A-X.

  20. road warrior Says:

40 years of football not including this year. average wins per season 6. 11 winning seasons. 1 .500 season. 640 games. 331 wins 309 loses. Oh yeah 1 super bowl. Maybe we won the super bowl because we knew every play they were going to run it was like game planing against or own team. The game has changed so much it’s not even fun to watch anymore. The refs are terrible the players are over paid which makes going to the games way too expensive. Way to many dumb a$$ fans.I think it’s time for me to get a new hobby. I thought i would be the last person to ever say this and it makes me sad. I remember when i couldn’t wait for the next game and if i wasn’t at the game it would drive me nuts. It will be hard to let it go. I hope they sell the team to someone who knows what there doing. when the Glazers bought the team i thought finally someone who knows what to do. Not so much. You know the old saying every squirrel finds a nut once in a while. We need a real owner who knows what there doing. These guys aren’t it. Or at least hire someone who does and get out of the way pleeeease. Don’t know how much more i can stand.

“I just don’t see how teams that watch that tape – don’t go no huddle / 4 Wr and just throw and throw…”

I think what’s lost on all of people is they were completely shut out the first half. We were unable to keep our offense on the field the second half and kept our corners out there most of the second half with no pass rush and simply didn’t have the conditioning to sustain 5 quarters of football under those conditions

  23. DB55 Says:

    Joe

Is it alright to leave this here? It’s hilarious and a great point about the attitude of a winning org.

  24. Mort Says:

When you guys want to change coaches every two years, you have to reset your patience. I DGAF about what happened under rah or schiano or lovie because it all gets reset when Dirk and Smitty took over. Offense you can say has one year because dirk was the OC, but that’s it. I get it, we have sucked for the better part of a decade. You have to have the mental fortitude to stick with a plan for several years before it’s going to bear fruit. Deal with it. It’s the only way to break the cycle of constant losing.

  25. 813bucboi Says:

so is the defense still turning the corner?….GO BUCS!!!!

  26. Brandon Says:

This duo was 9-22 in their last two seasons in Atlanta together…. NINE and FREAKING TWENTY-TWO! How patient should the Falcons have been with these losers? Mike Smith hasn’t had even an average defense since he left Jacksonville years and years ago. He’s a terrible DC.

  27. BuccaneEric75 Says:

    Good stuff, DB, good stuff!

  28. DB55 Says:

    75

    I aim to please

  29. Wes Says:

People do need to chill out. When we win everyone talks playoffs, when we lose everyone talks lost season. We need to take it 1 week at a time just like our team does.

Early in the season there was talk of Jim Schwarts and his 3-0 eagles D. Now that team is 1-3 since their bye. We all just need to calm down and see how things pan out.

  30. 813bucboi Says:

@WES….it not the loses…its the way we’re losing….we’re losing games that are gift wrapped to use….when should everyone start freaking out?..week15..week16…we’re already half way thru the season…our qb and defense has regressed showing no signs of improvement….GO BUCS!!!

  31. cmurda Says:

All I know is the picture at the top of this article makes me sick. Freaking sick. I have to wonder to myself “Do I care more about winning than the actual players and staff on this team? You know, the ones making 6 to 8 figure salaries.

  32. Mort Says:

813bucboi: actually, our defense has not regressed. You forget how bad it was the last two years. It’s better. We aren’t getting blown out either. Also, penalties are down. Those were significant areas of concern and they are improving. People just need to be patient. Peyton manning wasnt who we know him to be in the middle of his second season. Like the article says, PATIENCE! Including you, Steve and Lee!

  33. mike10 Says:

If smith thinks we’ve formed this opinion over just one game, he’s drunk
