Bouncing Back

Can the secondary rebound?

Can the secondary rebound?

Can the defense bounce back? Can the passing game of the Dixie Chicks be corralled?

Well, if  you ask Bucs corner Brent Grimes, the answer is probably, sure.

Joe got a chance to talk to Grimes after the Raiders debacle last Sunday. While Grimes didn’t speak to the Dixie Chicks, he suggested  the loss to the Raiders was gruesome but looks can be deceiving.

“I’m actually proud of what we did,” Grimes said. “At the end of the day,  we were in it to the very end.”

Grimes is right. Even though Derek Carr napalmed the defense, it wasn’t like it was a blowout. What hurt more than Carr’s record-setting day was all the chances the Bucs had on offense to put the game away, and urinated all over themselves instead.

“We made some big plays when we needed to,” Grimes said. “That’s the life of a defensive back in the NFL. Some games are going to be like [Sunday].”

Thankfully, Grimes said he had never in his life been involved in a game where his team botched so many chances to win.

“That was a unique game,” Grimes said. “It was a good game to watch, but not for us.”

Grimes is onto something, Joe believes. It is unlikely we see the Bucs puke on themselves like they did Sunday. The Raiders lead the NFL in fewest sacks. That offensive line allowed Carr to pick apart the Bucs defense. Give a guy enough time and dudes will get open, it’s that simple. Give a quarterback time to throw with Amari Cooper and Michael Crabtree as targets, and a defense has no hope.

Atlanta is one of the worst teams in the NFL at protecting a quarterback. Matty Ice has been taken to the ground 20 times. Only five teams have allowed more sacks. (Yes, Joe knows the Falcons have played one more game than some teams.)

So just on lack of protection alone, the pass defense of the Bucs should improve tonight. But will it be enough?

    It’s DEREK not DAVID.
That has got to drive Derek absolutely nuts. Everyone seems to always call him the wrong name.
    Does everybody call Eli, Peyton?
    Was Peyton always called Archie?

I would be very surprised if David Carr napalmed any defense recently, Joe.

Joke aside, ATL has 2 stud receivers as well and if we don’t get a serious pass rush going, our DBs will have no chance. Again.

Last week’s loss was without a doubt, the most frustrating of the season.

Who cares what his name is?! As far as this conversation is concerned he might as well be Zeus! 🙂
The offense left the defense hung out to dry. Couple that with no pass-rush and no DB is going to have a “good” day.
Hopefully it will be much better tonight.
    Go Bucs!

I know right dave. It’s just like Rainbow Dash and Ger@ldinie. I always get those two confused. Seriously though ….

VH3 got picked on for the first time this season , I’m interested in seeing if Atl tries the same thing and if VH3 can make them pay.

I am glad I am not the only one.

    Ummmmmmm negative BGrimes.

You were in it because they set a record # of penalties. Most game they were working out of 1st and 20 or 2nd and 15. And you did not make plays when needed because you lost a 7 pt lead and blew it in OT.

I’ve seen a lot of bad Bucs defensive performances and that was tops.

Cover your mouths, the loser mentality is contagious.

    two things.

    1) You were only ‘in it’ because THEY kept you in it.

    2) Can and Will are two totally different things.

The Falcons O-Line are a lot better, since they signed Alex Mack.
