Bucs Cut Johnthan Banks

October 31st, 2016
From better days.

From better days.

Johnthan Banks is gone.

Per the fingertips of Ian Rapoport of NFL.com, the Bucs have released their 2013 second round draft pick.

Joe is bummed out about this for a lot of reasons. First, Banks was a cool guy and stand-up dude. Second, Banks was (is?) a talented cornerback.

After leading the team in interceptions in 2014, Lovie Smith’s first year, Banks quickly found himself in Lovie’s doghouse. He never got out of it.

Joe is convinced Lovie ruined Banks. How can a guy go from a starter leading the team in interceptions, which Lovie always walked around with a boner about, to being all but run out of town and replaced by Toast Jenkins of all people?!

Joe sure hopes Banks finds both a team that can use him and his past success.

Hey, at least with Banks — who was a healthy scratch the past couple of games — you can’t blame him for yesterday’s debacle.

Joe will speculate that Jason Licht found no takers for Banks on the trade market and let him loose. The trade deadline is tomorrow.

Quite a fall from grace for Banks, who was mentored by Darrelle Revis and famously locked down on Calvin Johnson during a 2013 Bucs win in Detroit. Banks — “Go Go Gadget Arms,” as Revis called him — fought through a MRSA infection that season to be a standout rookie.

Lovie Smith had no use for Banks last year, demoting him in favor his bromance, Mike “Toast” Jenkins and Tim “Loaf” Jennings. Mike Smith had no use for Banks, either.

Joe wishes Banks well. He’s sure to have a new team this week.

    What!?

    I am shocked!

    Really

  2. LifeOfABucFan Says:

I just saw that on Twitter and actually I am a bit disappointed..

  3. Njbucsfan Says:

He’ll be signed by Dallas who is in desperate need of a CB….couldn’t even get a late round pick. Lovie ruined this guy.

  4. LifeOfABucFan Says:

I’m wondering if there’s some kind of big trade announcement coming tomorrow..Maybe they tried to trade JB27?..and maybe it didn’t work?..we got Mike James back, so that’s who gets cut!!?? Makes no sense to me at all..

  5. BucTrooper Says:

So Hey Jude commits a horrible holding penalty that extends the game and then tackles his own player allowing the winning TD to score…. The Bucs’ answer to the problem is cutting the guy on the bench behind him.

    Typical. Bucs. Logic.

  6. CalBucsFan Says:

Did he even play this season? What happened with this guy, he once looked very promising? Will he show up on some other roster and be a stud, aka Barron w Rams?

  7. AtlBucFanDan Says:

My crystal ball has shown me that Chicago will pick him up and in a couple of weeks, he will pick-off JW 7 times.

  8. LeicesterBucFan Says:

Hey joe with numerous 2nd picks being waived for many reasons, ASJ and now banks come to mind straight away obviously, how and why does a kicker that misses PAT after PAT still have a job? I understand he is not the only problem but he has caused my local bargain booze to run dry!!!

  9. James Walker Says:

Kiss another second round pick goodbye. That is 2 this year? When Roberto is gone that will be 3.

  10. ElioT Says:

Lol – we should only draft OLine in the 2nd round forever.

    #thisf**kingteam

  11. lightningbuc Says:

Johnthan Banks just hit the lottery. Dude damn near was killed by the Bucs during the MRSA debacle. Better times ahead for him.

  12. BuccaneerNomad Says:

Every day.I become a little more dampened by this team.

  13. Another J Says:

I was yelling for us to put him in the game yesterday, Amari Cooper ate up the entire secondary yesterday.
He’ll win a SB with another team, It’s the Tampa Bay Way.

  14. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Once again……we all know better than Mike Smith, the Assistant Coaches, Koetter & Licht. ….it’s quite obvious that there was no trade market and we didn’t want him…..so he gets cut…..that’s what happens.

  15. orlbucfan Says:

Figures. Keep Crappo Conte and let Banks go. I wish JB the best!! Someone will sign him, and he will turn out to be as good as he was as a rookie. Does Mike Smith really know what he’s doing? Mike James, big deal. I am a loyal, long-time Bucs fan, but I hate stupid moves. Smith never gave JB a chance. (Sound of disgusted Bronx cheer.)

  16. nick Says:

turn this place into a parking lot, its OVER!!!

  17. Ken Says:

The Bucs should just trade their cursed 2nd round pick every year from now until the end of time.

  18. James Walker Says:

@ ElioT We tried that…Aaron Sears.

  19. BucsFan90 Says:

So we lost/wasted three 2nd round picks this year. Thanks Jason Gump

  20. CalBucsFan Says:

Checking stats at both the Bucs website and ESPN to see how many tackles he has made in 2016, Banks’ name doesn’t even appear on their roster at either website. No way they’ve both updated their roster list already, so was Banks on the IR or something and that’s why he’s not showing up on their roster anywhere? Even this years infamous 2nd round draft pick has ONE tackle, what none for Banks? Did he ever get on the field, anyone know?

  21. Buc4Lyfe79 Says:

Either the panthers or saints will pick him up…id bet panthers.

  22. nick Says:

AggaYO has a really nice hair do and nicely done eyebrows, maybe he has a future in the Salon Business!! I also detect sort of a agayyyo lisp!!

  23. Joseph Mamma Says:

From now til the end of time, this team needs to just trade up in the first round, and use their second round pick to do so. It’s the only way we might get any value whatsoever for those second rounders.

Once again……we all know better than Mike Smith, the Assistant Coaches, Koetter & Licht……..
    ———————————————-
Yeah, at times we fans do know better than they do. It does happen, and you know it as well as I do!

  25. nick Says:

AGGAYO IS GONNA BE A STAR ON THE NEXT SEASON OF GAME OF THRONES!!

  26. Warrenfb12 Says:

I know he’s been on the bench all year…but the whole thing is a head scratcher. Kid was pretty damn good when Revis and Schiano were here.

  27. nick Says:

jameis is a dumpster fire, he will be out of the league in year 5, dont hate on me for telling the truth, another wasted pick, draft bust.

  28. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Wasn’t this a Mark Dominick pick?

  29. J Says:

JB was 6 ft 2 cb who Chiano how to use but smith’s. Both l9vie and his brother Mike, seems unable to figure out our sorry secondary. I would have JB in their instead of grimes.

  30. JonBuc Says:

You mean to tell me that the Bucs couldn’t have used him yesterday? My money is on the Patriots picking him up if he lasts that long under the waiver wire rules

  31. LargoBuc Says:

He looked good. I dont get what happened. Maybe there just wasnt any room for Banks after adding Vernon and Grimes? I think Banks should be here personally. Could have drafted someone besides a corner, maybe a safety or a receiver or a running back or Laremy Tunsil?

  32. Chris Says:

Lol and Conte and Heartgraves did better,? Cmon, this guy would have thrown for an NFL record if it weren’t for 75 yrds called back and one dropped Cooper bomb. We are and have been s…tty at talent evaluation . Watch this guy get picked up by Bellecheck and get 6 picks. Chris frikken Conte is better than a guy who had 7 picks his rookie year ?

  33. Anthony Says:

Yep just threw my phone across the house upon reading this. Although I do love your nicknames (toast) (loaf) that was pretty funny stuff. I am now in favor of the BUCS trading away all second round draft picks in the future. They have done us zero good for a while now. I sure hope Noah Spence turns out good!

  34. JonBuc Says:

In order to make up for Hey Jude’s game altering penalty and overtime whiff, the Bucs have learned everyone a lesson by cutting Johnthan Banks. Hey Licht’s Out…you cut the wrong 2nd rounder, fella!

  35. Chris Says:

Yeah Warren, and LVD was a beast when Schiano was here. But he was too mean for this stand up for the player crowd in Tampa. Schiano knew, the Glazers knew, this was, is, and for the future be a undisciplined soft team until major roster upheaval happens or a coach that can once again light a fire under their asses . And if we do get that coach , you ninnys for fans and the press who gets their feelers hurt cause he ain’t Lovie dovie needs to keep their traps shut.

  36. Blake_Bucsfan Says:

Johnathon banks just isnt athletic enough. And its clear its because he isnt dedicated enough to be. Any rookie that could 1v1 Calvin Johnson and hold his own obviously had the stuff to make a living in this league. But its clear to me he wasn’t dedicated enough to mold himself into a star through hard-work and dedication. Its kinda clear to me now why he got himself into lovies doghouse. Its a shame he squandered away his potential.

  37. DB55 Says:

The Glaziers are playing us all for fools. Ain’t NOBODY at 1BP trying to win. Except maybe Winston and his crew me, hump and Brate. And that will be changing real soon watch.

  38. LakeLandBuc Says:

Christmas came early for Johnthan Banks, he must be celebrating now.

  39. D-Rome Says:

Banks had a fresh start and new opportunity with a new coaching staff to prove his worth. He had a terrible camp. Lovie hasn’t been in the building since early January. Lovie didn’t ruin Banks. Banks ruined Banks.

Toast Jenkins was going to make the team in Arizona and was in contention for a starting job out there before he got injured. Go figure.

Mike Smith saw in Banks the same things Lovie saw in Banks. He wasn’t very good. Simple as that. Verner should be next.

  40. Silent_Partner Says:

Hard for a coach to ruin a position like CB. Either you can play or can’t play. Not to mention that Lovie’s coached some pretty good ones that didn’t have top tier pedigree coming out of college when he was in Chicago from Charles tillman to Nathan Vasher. Stop making excuses for the guy. He just doesn’t have it. It happens. If it was the scheme, he wouldn’t have been a healthy scratch all year for this new defensive staff.

  41. brendan Says:

No, no no! Wrong second round pick!!! And I was a Aguayo supporter until this weekend

  42. orlbucfan Says:

Banks played about 5 minutes in ONE preseason game this season, looked pretty good (compared to Conte), then pouf! on the bench. Mike Smith blew this one. I hope I don’t see any more Smith/Head Coach nonsense for awhile. Glazers better let DK be the HC for 2 more years. Musical Head Coaching Chairs have crippled the Bucs. That one is on the Glazer Bros. Yes, I am disgusted by this latest “smart” move!

  43. orlbucfan Says:

    You are wrong, D-Rome.

  44. StAugBuc Says:

Why are so many comparing his play to Conte? They don’t play the same position. It’s also just possible he’s not as good as you dream him to be.

  45. 1sparkybuc Says:

The Bucs prep players to start and star for the Patriots, the Seahawks, the Raiders, the Broncos, the Fowlgoons, etc. etc. etc.

  46. WhatdaBUCisthis Says:

    D-Rome
I agree, he’s not that good obviously. Can’t question his heart. Not saying you are. But yea he wasn’t putting it on tape this year in practice. That being said… I’m still blowed. So much potential.

  47. ThunderSack Says:

I was hoping he was going to get in the game on Sunday because Hargreaves was being picked on so much and seemed ineffectual. Good luck to Banks!

  48. Tampabaybucfan Says:

It seems that both Jude & Verner were ahead of Banks on the depth chart….and perhaps Robinson was also or was better on ST.

I suspect our secondary against the Raiders fell victim to an impotent pass rush…..we were hardly ever in Carr’s face…..and he had two very good WRs that ….given time, were able to get open….
He was accurate, Jameis was not.
I think VH3, Grimes & Hey Jude (penalty notwithstanding) are doing better than last year.

  49. Pit Says:

WTF!!!!! This is stupid or it looks stupid now.

  50. DB55 Says:

You guys remember when the TB experts said Clayborn wasn’t good enough? Well he’s on a first place team w 3.5 sacks which is better than any of our DEs. Case in point our rookie who some already claiming is a bust has 3.0 sacks.

It’s the only constant around here all the experts and their knowledge.

  51. D-Rome Says:

But yea he wasn’t putting it on tape this year in practice.

Yep, that’s all that matters. Like the old saying goes, the eye in the sky don’t lie. The film has been telling the truth for a while.

  52. WhatdaBUCisthis Says:

Look at the Patriots. They only pay there offense side of the ball. Traded a pretty good defensive player. reporter stated that they rarely do new contracts with there D players. They draft BPA and always seem to be in the playoffs. Get #3 some weapons and keep building the o-line.
    That being said #93 n #54 wouldn’t b here today.
They haven’t earned extensions. They never would’ve resigned those two. I’m not bashing them. Just stating the obvious. Guarantee you #93 would be traded by tomorrow if Belicheck was here
    #copyNE
    C’mon BUCS

  53. Issic Haggins Says:

How in the hell do you not convert him to safety!!! Are you telling me he wouldn’t have done a better job on Cooper who clearly is in the head of our 5′ 8″ starting corner . Hell I was screaming to put banks or Verner in, what in the hell is going on ??? So Grimes is prob in his last effective year , what’s the plan for next year, not Verner at 7 mil……………. I think Licht is drinking too much of his own beer !!! Mark my words Banks can’t play on a D that just gave up the record in passing yards but he will be playing in the NFL for 5 more years but but but he can’t play hear WTF …………. Licht has lost his flipping mind !!! Smith has lost his mind by not moving the lil rookie to the slot and putting someone else on cooper!!! I see allot of coaches and GM s defending themselves and not making the best decisions, Never Never Never a good sign. Licht can’t even think right over the kicker , he has clearly lost his mind !!! Give banks three games and he is a better option than the safety’s we have, hell you can’t hit anyone in the NFL anyway, all the more reason to put banks at safety!!! Also BTW not a chance Robinson is better than banks !!! Is it April first and I don’t know it !!!

  54. AtlBucFanDan Says:

Guarantee you #93 would not last a second on the market and Belicheat would probably first in line.

  55. SB with Jameis Says:

We could have gotten something from the Panthers SURELY who is starting LEONARD FREAKING JOHNSON

  56. SB with Jameis Says:

    That being said #93 n #54 wouldn’t b here today.
They haven’t earned extensions. They never would’ve resigned those two. I’m not bashing them. Just stating the obvious. Guarantee you #93 would be traded by tomorrow if Belicheck was here

    ……………………………………………..
DING DING DING…And we have a Winner for the Dumbest post of the Century so far!

  57. buccfan305 Says:

Trade cheesecake McCoy while we still can.

  58. grafikdetail Says:

hey joe! any rumblings of the front office even trying to trade banks? i’ve seen GMs get something for lesser players than Banks… Licht couldn’t even finesse a 7th rounder?

  59. Tom S. Says:

Banks showed promise early on but I recall him getting yelled at a bit in camp for not knowing what he was supposed to do. He was never fast to begin with and if there is any reason to believe he wasn’t working his tail off like resident slouch ASJ then you have the anatomy of a bust.

I agree he could have had potential as a safety though. But if he was looking bad at a position he’s played most of his life for I don’t see how he was going to look good at one he hasn’t.

  60. mike10 Says:

Why is anyone surprised? This is the same old Bucs team were used to. Put someone in the dog house, don’t play them, then cut them with zero compensation or proof to prove otherwise in a position you have poor depth. Why not try him at safety. Maybe TE.

You want to know how you get to be a bad team? Keep cutting second rd picks. This franchise sucks. Can’t Yzerman manage this team instead?

  61. SB with Jameis Says:

In 2008 when the Gators won the NC Tebow threw 30 TDs to only 4 Ints! Banks grabbed 2 of those! Dude who intercepted HALF of Tebow’s passes for an ENTIRE Season is now unemployed. Not for long I’m sure

  62. mike10 Says:

Teams with bad coaches cut talented players.

  63. WhatdaBUCisthis Says:

SB…I don’t think so. It’s a proven, single-minded focus fan like yourself would understand. You live in the past obviously
    Carry on

  64. SB with Jameis Says:

It would be nice if one of you Genius GMC haters to tell me the DLmen we have drafted since we drafted him. Idiots can’t tell the difference between bad play vs. bad management. I mean Really?

  65. SB with Jameis Says:

WhatdaBUCisthis you are an Idiot plain and simple. I have been following this team for 41 years and have forgotten more about football than you may ever learn. GMC has been a top5 DT for his whole career with ZERO help from the front office and LVD has been better than Top5 as well. Only a TRUE Idiot would think that THEY are to blame. Do you even Comprehend what a Team is????
Carry on with your ignorance but you might not want to advertise it so much.

  66. SB with Jameis Says:

Oh and your Madden team doesn’t count.

  67. AtlBucFanDan Says:

Pretty sure Banks has been on the trade block for the past several weeks. (inactive and not traveling with the team) It seems like if there was an offer made, they would have taken it, with them releasing him, it shows that there were no offers made.

  68. Big HogHaynes Says:

So much for coaching the LOVIE out of them!

  69. LakeLandBuc Says:

They should try coaching the Lovie into these players, they are garbage. The Raiders had 23 penalties for 200 yards and still managed to gain 626 yards of offense. No Lovie Smith defense has EVER been this bad.

  70. c-spann Says:

I was hoping that they move him to saftey. I believe it would have allowed the def to be the aggressive def we all hoped for, but have not see.

  71. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I agree with Joe about Lovie ruining him.

However, a good DC would have fixed that. He’ll play for someone else and become the next Talib.

Still, atm? He was our worst CB.

  72. DB55 Says:

    SB

What happened to our boy yesterday? He got picked on by Coop. I’m not worried but I did predict that.

  73. Issic Haggins Says:

He will be signed by Carolina or Arizona by morning !!

  74. iamkingsu Says:

Let me get this straight. You give give up 500 yards passing and your next move is to cut a corner that wasn’t even active?? This organization is a joke from top to bottom

  75. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

They had to make room for Mike James. Duh.

  76. iamkingsu Says:

    Bonsai

Then you release Freddie martini or somebody like that. You don’t let solid players walk

  77. BucFan20 Says:

This will be another one of those something was up but will we ever know stories.

  78. iamkingsu Says:

If you put banks on Crabtree one on one I bet he won’t get bullied

  79. jj Says:

We should be used to this at the trade deadline because of the Rays, yet is stings every time. I know the guy hasn’t set the world on fire, but neither has anyone else in our secondary. We have one day to get Jameis a speedy receiver, dollars to donuts it doesn’t happen. We are 6 million under the cap right now, 7 more next year for Verner, 8 million I believe for VJax. That is 22 million to sign someone to a longterm deal. Are we going to stick with Evans (awesome), Humphries (solid), Shorts (good when healthy) and pure poop after that. The only trade I would even consider is for Jeffries, although Cutler could get him killed tonight. Torrey Smith is a flyer but hasn’t really grown as a receiver. I would love for the Bucs to trade Verner for Ted Ginn Jr (flyer that has the dropsies, but we are used to that too) if they would be willing, tough to trade within the division.

  80. BucfaninMi Says:

Carolina bound. Will pick off Two passes in the last game. We suck!

  81. LakeLandBuc Says:

Speaking of speedy receivers. I don’t know why the Bucs let the Falcons claim Taylor Gabriel off waivers. I don’t get Jason Licht, it’s like he’s trying to destroy this franchise.

  82. DB55 Says:

You sure it’s Jason or the glazier boys?

  83. Robertg Says:

He hasn’t played for a reason, reason being he just isn’t that good anymore. THEY probably got no nibbles for a trade so they cut him.
Stop comparing him to Conte as he isn’t a safety.

  84. EA Says:

I guess time will tell, it’s early to jump to any conclusions, maybe the coaching staff sees something we don’t.

  85. OneLove Says:

    BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHA!!!

Hi Joseph! I know this one hurts more than others.. You’ve been on Jonathan Bank’s WANG and I COULD NEVER UNDERSTAND WHY? Perhaps you caught a peek while you were in the next stall??

“Joe is convinced Lovie ruined Banks.”

This is a WHOLE NEW LOW for me Joseph. That has got to be one of the DUMBEST things I’ve ever seen written on this blog! I didn’t even know you can GO THIS LOW as someone who tries to be respectable.(keyword = tries) I realize that you know that you don’t have the “smartest” readers, but I’m sure they can see past this one. Jonathan Banks has and ALWAYS WILL BE OVERRATED!

Also, you claiming that Banks was ruined by Lovie Smith IS AN INSULT TO BANKS!! He is an adult and a PROFESSIONAL! He’s not a baby who needs to be led around and taught how to play the game he’s been PLAYING HIS WHOLE LIFE!

It REALLY IS THIS SIMPLE Joseph. He had a chance to compete for a starting spot and he lost…

“It’s as simple as that….” – Lovie Smith

    Good RIDDANCE!

  86. AtlBucFanDan Says:

    Who is Joseph?

  87. Trubucfan22 Says:

He looked decent 3 years ago. He wasn’t getting on the field in front of grimes, Hargreaves or Jude. The only mistake the bucs made was not cutting him during training camp. He is washed up and hasn’t done ANYTHING in 3 years. See ya. Good luck somewhere else.

  88. AtlBucFanDan Says:

If you are referring to ‘Joe’ this is JoeBucsFan not JosephBucsFan. Get a clue.

  89. Ndog Says:

Man you people are freaking negative. The reality is we took a good Oakland team to the brink with one drafted skill position player on the field with Jameis and basically zero talent on the dline except for Gholston.

  90. AtlBucFanDan Says:

    Ndog-

I applaud your optimism. It’s kinda cute.

  91. Jeffbuc Says:

What game were some of you watching yesterday. I keep hearing how hey Jude tackled mcdougald on final play. Not at all what happened mcdougald came in with a shoulder tackle without wrapping up and knocked Jude out of the play. So keep blaming it on Jude. Not the bad passes bad play calling or horrible defense.

  92. AtlBucFanDan Says:

I fully blame Jude for holding, away from where the QB was looking, on fourth down, in the end-zone, with around (or under) 4 minutes in the fourth quarter.

I give partial blame to DK for tucking his tail at the end of the first half. 1:30 w/3 timeouts…. 2 runs…

  93. Ndog Says:

No Atl I just don’t tie this team to what Josh Freeman, Greg Schiano, Josh McKnown or anyone else did cause they have nothing to do with this team or these players. I judge each regime on its on merit as these coaches have nothing to do with all those losses over the previous years.

  94. Not there yet Says:

Good luck J banks I know you’ll find a job immediately I just hope it’s not in the nfc South

  95. AtlBucFanDan Says:

    Ndog-

    I gotcha.

I agree, new regime, young regime, growing pains…

Tough to get sucked in and get curb stomped by a less talented team. We know what good play they’re (Bucs) capable of but those glimpses have just been few and far between.

This 3 game home stretch was supposed to be a turning point but it’s looking like it may be another coming undone for them. Atl is hot, watching Chi spank Min. as I type this… What looked like a slim chance of three home wins is looking more like 3 more losses. In fact, I would not be shocked if this turns into a 6 game losing streak, to be honest.

  96. Lokog Says:

i demand the bucs win this thursday for lynch a legendary safety are we gonna suffer more agony for us fans watching games. Glory dayz defensive players are ashamed of our current d. This team sometimes playz with no ❤ 👎 for this franchise i think it all starts up top with them glazer boyz hiring scouts who cant scout and draft players who are always hurt. A fan from el paso tx.

  97. Eric Says:

    Usual shot at Lovie.

  98. SB with Jameis Says:

Hey Eric. People at University of Illinois are already taking shots at him and Chicago Bears fans have been taking shots at him for Years. We didn’t patent anything. Some fans here are really shot out.

  99. Chucklehead Says:

Lol. Saw bout 3 or 4 fools blaming Jude for this one because of that hold… hahahaba

Thats the difference between this team and others. We are still in pre school compared to other teams.

How many penalties did the Raiders have that could have wrecked them? Yet still they pulled it together, made the most on every play, and won.

I beleive there are a handful of defeatists on our team that cant pull the nose up when it gets rough. Attitude is everything. We were throwing up prayers. They were throwing completions and first downs.

Gonna take a while for our boys to figure it out, but Im hopeful they do. Its up to the leaders on this team to teach the others how to finish a game.

  100. Chucklehead Says:

As for Banks, who knows? Maybe he is mentally soft. Maybe they dont like his attitude. Maybe the staff knows more about personnel than the fans on here do. Its done now though. Moving on.

  101. Sir Says:

Well at least we’re still better than the Browns

  102. HuntsvilleBucFan Says:

So, I’m as bummed as anyone about Banks. I don’t know what happened to him. It hurts our team to cut a second rounder who I thought might actually start this year. BUT, we also have to admit… TWO Coaching staffs have now deemed him unplayable. NO TEAM was willing to trade for Banks. He got ZERO playing time this year. I wish him the best, and I he may well land on his feet, but I think we gave him plenty of chances to be the man. At this point in his career, he is not valuable to us. Oh well. Thanks Banks for the great couple years, good luck to you, and ONWARD for the Bucs.

  103. sho nuff Says:

Happy for Banks to get out of this Dope Show..

  104. buccanstopit Says:

Shefter reports he wasn’t cut, traded to Lions for 7th next year
