Koetter: Absolutely No Slump For Jameis

October 16th, 2016

jameis 0811Happy bye-week Sunday! Joe has fresh chatter from Dirk Koetter.

Did you really think Joe would take a day off?

The Bucs head coach delivered quite a defense and endorsement of America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, on SiriusXM NFL Radio late last week.

Gil Brandt, the architect of the Cowboys dynasties before the Jimmy Johnson era, asked about slumping Jameis. Koetter waved off the notion.

Gil Brandt: I thought that both [Marcus Mariota and Jameis Winston] really played well last year. I thought your guy played especially well last year. And have they kind of hit a second-year slump? I know you probably don’t pay much attention to Tennessee, but has your guy hit a little bit of a second-year slump, or is it because so many people are injured and you have no running game that his production isn’t what it was a year ago?

Dirk Koetter: I think it’s totally the latter there, Gil. I think it’s totally a lack of running game. You know, in our two wins, both divisional wins on the road, Atlanta opening week and Carolina last week, those coincidentally were the two games we ran the ball the best. And I don’t think there’s any doubt that a young quarterback’s best friend is a good running game. And that ties in to then having better protection and you’re able to stay ahead of the chains. In Week’s 2, 3 and 4 we just weren’t able to do that. We fell behind and we weren’t successful running the ball. I think Jameis — I can only speak on Jameis — I don’t think it’s a slump at all. He’s had a couple of really good games and two or three not as good as we know he’s capable of. I think Jameis is going to settle in. He did the same thing last year. After Game 4, he went through about a six- or seven-game stretch where he played really well. And I think he’ll do the same thing this year.

Quite a stand Koetter took for the QB there. And considering Koetter and his staff just spent days “self-scouting” the Bucs. Perhaps Koetter has seen things others don’t.

However, Joe doesn’t live in the land of daisies, lollipops and cheerleaders eager to mud wrestle, Jameis has struggled too often with accuracy. And that has little to do with a running game.

Winston has 1 weapon in Evans that is it. VJAX is washed up and finished and of course 22 went back to his 50/50 self after getting paid. You can’t win with players like martin and mccoy. simple as that.

  2. SB with Jameis Says:

One thing I am confident of is that there is NO WAY the Bucs can lose today!:)

  3. Erik w/ Clean Athletics & United Games - a new 'Interactive' Fantasy Sports app by the makers of Madden Football Says:

    We need speed and quickness.

Hopefully tmaxcon’s boy Louis Murphy can still run. We need that 4.4 speed. And no matter the chatter, Murphy fit well into this offense and was a nice compliment to our other guys.

And I think Shep needs to be a bigger part of the offense. I think he has the quickness to get some separation and get open.

  4. BuccaneEric75 Says:

SB, if any team can lose on the bye week, it’s the Bucs.

  5. BuccaneEric75 Says:

Erik, I agree. Let’s not forget that Winstons first long completion in a win came on a busted play to Murphy against NO. Not a predictor of future success, I know, but it still can happen.

  6. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    tmaxcon Says
“Winston has 1 weapon in Evans that is it. VJAX is washed up…”

I disagree. Vincent has barely been targeted this year. Hard to get catches when they only throw to him a couple times per game.

  7. Cobraboy Says:

tmaxon, Martin was a very effective weapon vs. Atlanta.

And I think Koetter is correct: for this team to meet it’s offensive potential, a running game is mandatory.

    This is a play-action team, not a drop-back team.

  8. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Oh, and all the speed in the world will do zero good if our QB cannot connect with the WR.

Winston is certainly in the midst of a slump. That doesn’t mean it has to last the whole season though. He cou;ld turn things around now and be steller from here on out.

People felt the last game was boring…but you know what? They were having Winston take fewer risks…and the result was a win.

No way of denying that a safe Winston delivers wins now.

  9. Chris Says:

Bonzai I agree with you. I think Jameis has turned back to his FSU days of targeting a favorite receiver, Evans. Talib and Denver knew it. And the one near interception inside the 20 at Carolina, Evans double covered and Brate alone near the first down marker. Might be what some of Jackson frustrations are

  10. Sal Says:

Doug got paid that’s all he wanted, waste of $. McCoy is a big fat baby and the coaches/players know that too haha

  11. RustyRhino Says:

Erik just went to your site an interesting game concept to say the least. I will be signing up to give it a go.

I hope that Mr. Winston improves upon his first half abilities, so that we might be in better position to run the ball. It is very difficult to keep a good run/pass balance when your down 2+ scores. I want to see our opening drives that are time consuming, effective and scores TD’s. What every fan wants right.
Without the ability to run effectively our team becomes one dimensional, leading right into our opponents defensive coaches game plan. With their D pinning their ears back and getting after our QB in the first quarter. Sure makes for a long day for our Oline .A very difficult task to overcome.
We are doing better in our run game with simply sticking with it. Not abandoning it by the beginning of the second period. For that to happen our run game needs to get positive yards over 3 yards a carry. This make the play action pass so very effective.

I have confidence that Coach Kotter and Coach Warhop along with Mr. Winston will get this to work soon. My fingers are crossed.
    Go Bucs!

  12. Chris Says:

I still am not a believer in Winston that he will improve his accuracy and decision making. He was streaky at FSU. His decision making put him and his team in holes early. And doing that in the NFL gets you blown out.

If you count how many times he’ll over throw wide open receivers, just think if he hits them , especially Monday night against Carolina, the game wouldn’t even be close. Or if he hits Jackson at the pylon against the Rams instead of overshooting him 10 yards.

Inaccuracy is something that can’t be fixed. You’re either accurate thrower or you’re not. Hearing Joe on the radio saying he needs to improve his accuracy is laughable.

  13. Ocala Says:

    Jameis is 22 years old
Take a look at what Hall of Fame QB’s were doing either in college or the NFL at the age.
I’m confident you will be very impressed where Jameis ranks in comparison at this point of his life.

  14. BucinJAX Says:

“live in the land of daisies, lollipops and cheerleaders eager to mud wrestle”

Joes, did you guys mix last nights dreams together? You ccan keep the daisies, lollipops, and mud. Eager cheerleaders though, may be in my dreams tonight.

  15. Bucsfan951 Says:

    Tmax strikes again….

  16. Tampa Tony Says:

Inaccuracy and bad decisions are not reflective of a running game

Too many excuses being thrown about for Freeman 2.0

  17. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Chris Says
“Inaccuracy is something that can’t be fixed. You’re either accurate thrower or you’re not.”

That’s not one bit true. You think kids starting out at QB are as accurate as they will ever come to be? No. They improve with practice and age.

Saying Inaccuracy cannot be fixed is complete wrong. Practice makes perfection. Ask Arron Rodgers, Bret Favre, Peyton Manning, Big Ben…any of the great QBs. They all will tell you that their accuracy improved as the years wore on.

Heck, ask Trent Dilfer even, who was horrible in Tampa, but became slightly more accurate with the Ravens.

It CAN be fixed. History does not support your claim.

  18. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I did not want us to draft Jameis Winston…in fact, only me and maybe three others here on this site were against it. That said, Jameis has shown he has the what it takes to succeed.

Too many fans around here want immediately gratification. They want quick fixes. They want long term success, but they refuse to invest the time it takes to achieve it.

Jameis Winston has the following important traits:

He thinks fast…faster than any QB the Bucs have ever had.
He has the mental fortitude to lead the team.
He has the arm strength to go deep.
He is best at short to mid range.
He takes responsibility, even if he obsessed fans refuse to apply it.
He can be mobile when he has to, even if he is best as a pock passer.
He is willing to put in the work to become the best, instead of talking about doing it.

Tampa fans seemed to believe everything would happen quickly, even if the team was not finished being rebuilt. Heck, year after year, you guys fall for the hype. Even now, the hype is there.

A Tampa fan either completely buys into false hype, or they totally give up on the players or team. There is no middle ground for most of them.

And that’s why Tampa fans suck.

  19. Chris Says:

Buc bonsai: at this stage yes. At 22 years old. Yes. He’s been inaccurate in college. What makes you think he will be in the NFL ?

  20. Buc1987 Says:

Chris…you must have not watched him play much while he was in college, cause he does heat up and go on stretches of 7-7 and 9-9 at any given moment.

Bonzai is right for once! 🙂

  21. Chris Says:

It’s the eye test for me and it’s not just Jameis Winston.

Year after year us Bucs fans buy into the hype on this team. But it’s the same result. Sloppy penalties. Overrated play and coaching issues. It’s like we never get the right guys.

Example: Mike zimmer. We interviewed him 3 times. What the heck didn’t we see in him? Come on. I like Koetter but zimmer is a stud.

Jason licht? First draft he takes ASJ and sims. Coulda had Landry and Freeman. Yes you’re judged as a gm on misses vs players you passed on.

And what idiot trades up for a career 88% accurate kicker in round 2? Please. That decision alone plus the 2014 free agency bust debacle should alone get you canned.

Ownership has been to blame. Not hiring a President of football operations is problem one Bc ownership can’t find a qualified coach and I believe they forced lichts hand on Koetter instead of looking at josh mcdaniels.

And licht drafting Winston : Winston is everything today’s and most days standard qbs are. NFL teams are looking for quick release, good pocket presence, quick decision and good decision making qbs who are accurate. Winston has a leftwich like release. Is Ben roethlisbueger athletic but jay cutler decision making minded and inconsistent throwing the football.

Bonzai, I was not a fan of us taking Winston. In fact, I wanted one of two qbs in 2014: trade up for Carr or hope for Carr in round two or take Jimmy Garoppolo in round two and develop him for a year because had all the traits.

In 2015 I was a fan of Mariota. Because he was smart with the football and continuously progressed as a pocket qb and a 3 year starter. Winstons regression concerned me.

I just don’t think this franchise is making good decisions from the top down.

    ————————————————————–
Yeah I have. And didn’t I not say he was inconsistent no? That was the Atlanta game he got hot. What has he done since? Streaky. And leaves a ton of plays on the field. He misses open receivers too often. I’m still trying to figure out how you miss 6’5 receivers open by 10 yards over their head?

  23. Buc1987 Says:

    Okay you win.

    Let’s go get another QB.

  24. Chris Says:

I’m not saying that. You give him 4 years Bc he’s you’re #1 pick but I don’t see it just yet in him.

Right now he’s not a franchise qb. Will he be? Idk. That’s to be determined. But right now we need to build a team that’s strong around him.

  25. Bob in Valrico Says:

agree with everything Bonzai has said.Afraid the accurracy issues will need to be addressed with a special QB coach in the off season.he was off some last year when facing good defenses and that has continued.
also agree with 87 that jameis is streaky and if he hits a big play early his game could improve drastically.
@chris still wondering if his high passes have sometinhg mto do with his baseball throwing motion.

  26. Bucs fan #7423 Says:

Jamies Winston is the best quarterback we ever had and will ever have

  27. Nole4JabooANDdBucs Says:

    I agree with:
    @ Bonzai
    @ 87
    @Bob in Valrico
    @ 7423

It was JW who practiced with ME til he got his game back up!
Improve his surrounding cast, then WAIT for JW to light it up! Just WAIT 4 IT!!!

  28. Strider ....Sec 147 Says:

Jameis is going to do the same as last year except he will go the rest of the season playing high level football the dude is gonna be the best just needs the reps and experience he is so young 22

  29. Bob in Valrico Says:

    @Nole4Jaboo
Mike evans and shepard also worked with a nfl backup quarterback in Texas whose name I don’t recall. So his conditioning was on point this year.I give credit to Evans for wanting to step up his game and doing what it takes in the off season. And you are right that Jameis and Evans did also get together and
work out in the off season.

  30. IWatchTheGames Says:

Most of Jameis Winston’s turnovers are due to inadequate pass blocking. The Bucs should have drafted an OT with that 2nd round pick. Cam Robinson OT Alabama.

  31. Buc1987 Says:

    This just in…

Aaron Rodgers has been throwing balls over his WR’s heads all game long.

He may amount to something in this league, but I just don’t see it.

  32. LargoBuc Says:

Jameis has been inconsistent. That comes from raw mechanics. Alot of very good qb’s have struggled with those same issues early abd went on to have great careers. Bret Favre, Terry Bradshaw, Ben Roethlisberger to name a few. So our team is going to be inconsistent at times and, as 87 put it, “streaky”.

  33. Ocala Says:

    Love it Buc1987

  34. Bob in Valrico Says:

    @87
I had some of the same thoughts watching Rogers. We all know the effect pressure on QB can make.
But this is highlights for me how a QB’s thoughts on his weapons and their effectiveness affects their game. Not sure if Rogers is confident in Gordy Nelson being all the way back or running game worries.
But to be fair to Jameis ,he lacks all the weapons still available to Rogers.
Don’t see us filling all the holes on this team next year even.Everytime you turn around new holes are opening up on the team.
Which Doug martin will we get after the bye? What role will Sims play when he comes back?

  35. wasaBuc Says:

    Winston:
Rated 39th out of all NFL Qb’s this season by QB rating (NFL.com)
Rated 35th in terms of completion percentage.

How many NFL teams are there?

You all will say: “He’s young”, “He has no weapons”, “The sun was in his eyes”, “He’s a gunslinger”, etc.

You do not have a Rodgers, or a Farve, or a Brees, or even a Carr . You have adoration for a college quarterback that was fun to watch when he played Clemson but is not adapting as quickly to the NFL as others drafted far behind him.

Hope is a beautiful thing until it isn’t

Stay objective and classy Tampa Bay.

  36. Rod Munch Says:

On a different note I’d like to apologize to Mike Glennon for saying him and Brock Osweiler were the same player and questioning why Houston would pay that kind of money for Brock when they could give up a draft pick and save tens of millions of dollars.

I take it back, Brock is terrible, not even half the QB that Glennon is.

If Brock was worth that kind of money, think what Glennon is going to get this upcoming offseason.

    Kobes rankings after 6 weeks

    Worst
    32 – sand frand
    31 – clev
    30 – chicago
    29 – tampa, jaksonville, miami,

    What do you guys think

We are 4th to sixth worst team. I have us equally bad as jacksonville and miami

  38. SOEbuc Says:

With a good running game we will be able to use play action a lot more and Jameis will be able to square his shoulders better, hopefully resulting in better accuracy.

  39. SOEbuc Says:

Kobe Focker, you’re such a hater. You’re almost as big a jacka$$ as the real Kobe

  40. Kobe Faker Says:

Looks like a high scoring game

Hope we can wakeup in this west coast game

  41. Charmin Ultra Yucs Says:

Every1 needs to check out the panther sites, they are all over there like it’s the end of their franchise. Calling for everyone to be fired. It’s good to know that we aren’t the only ones that act like that when we lose.

  42. Buc1987 Says:

wasaBuc …college has nothing to do with it and I’ve never read anyone say he had the sun in his eyes. Perhaps it’s you with the sun in your eyes.

College has nothing do with anything. I CAN SEE why he was drafted #1 overall. If you can’t see it then it IS you that is blinded from the star that is Jameis.

Some folks are a little slower than others….

There’s nothing classy about Tampa. Have you ever been to a Bucs game?

  43. Struggling Jameis - JoeBucsFan.com - Tampa Bay Bucs Blog, Buccaneers News Says:

  44. orlbucfan Says:

The usual idjits are posting again. The Panther fans are suffering through post-being-in-the-SB blues. We know that one: teams that are in the SB wilt the following year. It’s even starting to bite the Broncos.
