Better “Pocket Presence, Pocket Awareness”

October 23rd, 2016
Kaepernick

It wasn’t the old Colin Kaepernick last Sunday.

There are few NFL analysts Joe respects more than 49ers radio broadcast color man Tim Ryan.

The former Bears defensive tackle and Southern California All-American was so damn good at talking Xs and Os during his years at SiriusXM NFL Radio.

Ryan was on KNBR-AM this week in San Francisco talking about all things 49ers.

Ryan saw marked improvement from 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick against the Bills last Sunday, but he also saw many of the woes that plagued Kaepernick and led him to lose his starting job after being atop the NFL under Jim Harbaugh.

“Watching the tape, there were a couple of things that he did better, pocket presence, pocket awareness, better than I’ve seen him in a while,” Ryan said. “The A-to-B passing game, with accuracy, timing and rhythm, long way to go still.”

This is what scares Joe a bit. Kaepernick’s work in the pocket improved and the Bucs have no pass rush, especially compared to the Bills’.

Any QB can carve you up if given too much time, the decisions are sound. Certainly, Kaepernick has more talent than many QBs that have beaten the Bucs over the past few years.

Hey Joe(s): will you ever put the countdown clock back on here like you did for the first game? Can’t hurt! GO TAMPA BAY!!

  2. ChanEpic Says:

Calling this game will be harder to do than a S.I. swimsuit model. Who the freak knows? This could be a lopsided victory by either team, a close shootout, or a 0-0 tie and anyone who tells you they know what will happen, isn’t telling you the truth. Go Bucs?

  3. JonBuc Says:

I’d feel a lot better if Gabbert were still starting…

Did anyone watch his game last week? I live in the west coast so I had the misfortune of it being the only game on. His passing was bad. Possibly the worst I’ve seen this year. He missed multiple times by 10+ yards. Even his td was a terrible throw. The only way they score more than about 17 is if either his accuracy and timing significantly improved (doubt it) or he runs all over us. I would think we play a lot of single high coverage with 8 in the box and lvd spying kaepernick. Make the immortal receiving corps of Torrey Smith and Jeremy kerley beat you with kaepernick throwing dimes. Keep him in the pocket and force him to make good decisions and good throws, 2 things he has had some trouble with his whole career. You let him run and play a reactionary game he will do well. He is very athletic, but the patience needed to complete 10+ play drives is not there.

Amazing what Jim Harbaugh did with him while in San Fran. Now building a program at Michigan. The team hasn’t recovered from their meddlesome owner

  6. tmaxcon Says:

    Chris

did you happen to see any of the fun formations that Harbaugh used on loser Lovie yesterday. Harbaugh toyed with Lovie like a snake stalking prey…

  7. Chris Says:

Yeah looked like something from the Red Grange era of football

  8. The Buc Realist Says:

Since the the pass rush is rarely there, I would tell my D-line to do some late hits in the first quarter on college keapernick, just to rough him up!!!! he will be running the rest of the game and the LB can then knock some sense into him for the rest of the game!!!!!

    Go Bucs!!!!!!!!!!

  9. Kobe Faker Says:

    San fran wins 24- 17

Kaep plays well. Why? Because every qb does and until then why not

Our edge run defense will be DESTROYED

Koetter will be the pedictable clown. Again he is over his head. Stubborn playcalling and no adjustments

    Yippy will miss once

Ugly game and will show us we are bottom 3 worst team in the nfl

What a nice win for PSU over OSU last night. Great! Meyer going down in defeat is priceless. The 49ers now who knows what to expect? I’m guessing the over under for Kaepernick rush yards to be around 60 yards. Each game he most likely improves from the layoff. Crucial to limit the big Q-tips run gains.

  11. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Says:

Yes, I am a Michigan Fan, and watching Urban Meyer lose was priceless! No way we lose today to the 69ers.

  12. Defense Rules Says:

OK Joe, now I’m officially concerned. I saw this headline “Better Pocket Presence, Pocket Awareness” and I was sure it’d be a piece about Jameis. But noooo … it’s about Kaepernick instead. Jameis hardly gets an honorable mention anymore. Through the spring & summer just about every JBF article was about Jameis. Bucs offense was gonna tear up the league … best RB group in the NFL; our TEs were so good that Brandon Myers was gonna be let go; Evans & Jackson & Humphries were gonna provide that mid & deep threat we’d always wanted. Our OLine was the best in the NFL. Jameis was gonna light up the scoreboard, passing for 5,000 yds or more.

Now, through 5 games against some pretty good defenses, the Bucs offense is rarely mentioned anymore it seems. All the talk has been about the defense. Granted it’s been a bumpy road for our offense, and yet Jameis is on-track to pass for more yds than last year (4,246 vds 4,042) as well as more TDs (29 vs 22). Bucs defense won’t carry us to an 8-8 or better record; Bucs need the offense to step up and start controlling the game better and putting more pts on the scoreboard. Today against SF would be a good place to start.

I want a win but tbh if we don’t win I will not lose any sleep I am happy we beat the panthers in there house and the falcons in there house plus i see this division being 8-8 or 7-9 wins it I know all of u are high on the Falcons but I still think they are a garbage team the panthers are no good and the saints are the Anints also Jameis is not consistent some games he looks like a hall of famer some games he’s not but I expect him to be really really good next season I’m talking super bowl ready so guys just R E L A X good times are coming

  14. The Buc Realist Says:

Wooooo!!!! Its a Buccaneer Sunday!!!! Coming off the bye week, I am very excited to see what this team looks like!!!! And if you see a man running up and down the street with the American Flag after every big hit and sack on commie kaepernick, that would be The Buc Realist!!!!!

    Go America!!!!!!!!!

    And Go Bucs!!!!!!!!!!

  15. tmaxcon Says:

    The Buc Realist

Make sure you stay hydrated while running with the flag. I would not want you to end your season with a Calf Strain.

  16. BucinJAX Says:

Go Realist. I’ll be cheering for you, too.

  17. The Buc Realist Says:

    @BucinJAX

Thats right!!!! I am also working on a truce between Tmaxcon and GMC93!!!! If GMC93 can play and get a sack with a tbag then Tmaxcon will give GMC93 a free pass for the rest of the year and offseason!!! They have not signed on the dotted line, but both parties are close!!!!!

    Go America!!!!!

    And GO BUCS!!!!!!!!

  18. tmaxcon Says:

    The Buc Realist

very nice sir… I am the first one to post when he plays well however that is so rare all you can remember is the bad. Warm ups are tough let’s hope she can make it through stretching. I’ll be hoping.

  19. EA Says:

Levonte and Kwon have to play big today.

  20. BigHogHaynes Says:

    Exactly what I expected!!

  21. tmaxcon Says:

    BigHogHaynes

I realize you are too ignorant comprehend this but Kaep has the right to protest and individuals have the right to disagree with his protest it’s a two way street.

    Joe,

Did you catch Lovie in the pineapple suit rooting on Mariota.

  22. Sydney Says:

Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst, I always say. I’ve l already prepared myself for the embarrassing loss coming today (or is it?). I can already see the outside contain breaking down and Kaepernick running wild and looking like a star again. Offensively our GM’s failure to address the inevitable annual V-Jax exit will hamper Winston for weeks. Depending on a rusty Shorts to beat single coverage will result in the all too often coverage sacks Winston takes. Oh yeah, and another 3-4 team Koetter is yet to figure out. Other than that, it’s all good. GO BUCS!!

  23. BigHogHaynes Says:

How you doing King of Stupid!
