Ryan Smith Moves To Kick Returner

Another rough day for the Kenny Bell Mob, as Dirk Koetter shed more light on the kick returner position following practice today.

Speaking on WDAE-AM 620, Koetter said Donteea Dye would be the No. 1 kick returner on Saturday night in Jacksonville. He also said he wanted kick returner looks for rookie safety/cornerback Ryan Smith and wide receiver Jonathan Krause.

This all represents a very quick hook for Bell, who fielded the Bucs’ first kickoff of the preseason and fumbled it away, and didn’t get another shot.

Today at practice, Bell saw mostly third-team duty as a receiver the noted WDAE host Ronnie Lane.

Koetter had more to say about Bell (Joe will type that up later), but the Smith opportunity is intriguing. He returned kicks at North Carolina Central and broke the school record for average yards on kickoff returns, 28.1, and he took one return to the house last year.

The fourth-round pick can fly in the open field. Squeeze that rock, young man.

I’m hopeful Smith was a really, really great draft pick.

    Speaking for Pablo

“Pablo is hoping to get a tryout at KR……Gee whiz, Pablo has seen so many given a shot…..now many know Pablo has some moves…..”87 & Realist”….(Realist is a stingy tipper)…..but what most don’t know is that Pablo has great speed….and, I know what you are thinking….no it’s not from running away from border agents…..Pablo gained great speed from running away from boyfriends & husbands of the many women in Pablo’s live. Give Pablo a shot”

Happy to hear this I think he will be an upgrade over all of the Return Man although I was optimistic Kenny Bell was going to do good back there I guess it’s still not too late for him to redeem himself but I really do want to see Ryan Smith back there

And as far as Ryan Smith goes..I think he’s the key..said before..

  8. SOEbuc Says:

I really wanna see Ryan Smith on the kickoff (hopefully the jags will only kick off once), but he was a beast on KR in college.

  9. Buccfan37 Says:

Pablo… those child support payments must be through the roof… It makes sense to try a quicker kick returner, Humphries is not that player.

Those writing Kenny Bell’s obituary after 1 fumbled kickoff return are hilarious.
Koetter said he did a good job on his offensive plays in getting open a # of times.

If he has 0 catches after 4 pre-season games – THEN there might be some merit to the idea.

Let it play out people. trust me – we WANT Kenny Bell to do well and make this team. Same with ASJ. Both are talents that deserve some development time to blossom into successful if not good NFL players.

If Ryan Smith makes the Bucs roster, he will have to play a lot of Special Teams. Isaiah Johnson should be our 4th safety, he could be our best SS. I believe Ryan Smith is better suited for Corner, but we also have Jude and VH3 in the mix. The best players should make the final roster. Ryan Smith should make it as a Defensive Back/ ST, the same as Keith Tandy. Conte, McDougald, Johnson should make it as FS and SS. Jude, VH3, Verner, Grimes, Robinson should make it as CB’s. That gives us 10 DB’s, Banks and Wright should be ghost.

    Hooray Pablo!

Really looking foward to seeing what Ryan Smith can do, not so much as a return man, but as a safety. Really hope he’s the future there.
