Humphries Talks Corners

August 5th, 2016
Mad respect from Rudy.

Mad respect from Rudy.

Sometimes when you want to know about cornerbacks, what better way to break them down than to talk to a wide receiver?

So that’s what Joe did when he spoke with good guy and newly knighted No. 3 wide receiver Adam “Rudy” Humphries.

In particular, Joe wanted to know about the two new additions at cornerback, veteran Pro Bowler Brent Grimes and rookie Vernon Hargreaves.

When Humphries spoke about Grimes, it seemed like Grimes’ skillset took his breath away.

“Grimes is ridiculous!” Rudy said. “I have a lot of respect for him. His reaction time and how he can get in and out of breaks is unbelievable. It’s something I have never seen. Just watching him on film, I don’t know how he stays healthy with the breaks he can get out of. It is really impressive.”

Then Joe chatted with Rudy about Hargreaves. From the words of Rudy, it seems the Bucs may be onto something special with Hargreaves. Rudy really likes how fundamentally sound Hargreaves is for a rookie.

“First thing that stood out to me is, he is just an athlete,” Humphries said with clear respect. “He can jump and intercept some passes that most guys can’t get up and grab. His footwork is good and he’s really patient as well. He doesn’t [bite] on double-moves as some other guys. But, yeah, the first thing that stood out going against him is he is an athlete that can move around.”

Last year, when just about everyone thought the offensive line would be a weakness starting two rookies and pulling two guys off the street (yes, even Joe was fearful of this unit), it turned into a strength. The same might hold true for the corners this year.

No sober person would argue the secondary didn’t stink last year. Like fish rotting in the Florida sun. But with the addition of Grimes and Hargreaves, and it seems early on Alterraun Verner has been resurrected, the cornerbacks unit very well could turn from slop to top shelf.

These corners have me so high about this defense this season. Two pro bowl bookends. Man that’s huge y’all.

still too many hits on Jameis given-up by the oline last season…plus losing Mankins hurts at least for this year. Not all of it is on the o-line either, Jameis has to know when to run/progress through his reads faster/get rid of it quickly on blitze and teams with great pass rushes/throw it away, etc.

I am WORRIED about Donavan Smith. Slow feet that could get JW killed.

Grimes, Verner and Hargreaves is a very solid starting 3-some. CB play will be immensely improved this year.

I’m looking for better play from this group, a big name or two to be cut and for Hargraves & Grimes to get a combined 9 picks this year!……….. As far as their play I think your asking the wrong guy (Humpy)
