Day 8 Training Camp Notes & Observations

August 5th, 2016

trainingcamp8

UPDATED 1:21 p.m.: The Friday sun was shining at One Buc Palace and Joe was scrambling around the practice fields. Grab a sandwich. It’s Joe’s nearly world famous training camp notes.

*Nice bounce in Charles Sims’ step as he gets outside to the left side.

*Lots of 1-on-1, receiver corner work. Mike Evans got way behind Johnthan Banks. Too far. This hasn’t been a great camp for Banks. Joe’s not saying Banks is bad, just not up to his usual standard.

*Nice connection from America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, to Vincent Jackson. Alterraun Verner in coverage. Big beat small a lot today.

*DROP! Wide receiver Jonathan Krause, who Joe believes, as of today, would make the roster over Kenny Bell.

*11-on-11 work and you can hear the collisions. More intense contact today than at past practices. Doug Martin runs left and the helmets are cracking. Clinton McDonald and Joe Hawley continue to battle each other hard. It’s been like that all camp. Whistle blows and Hawley and McDonald often remain tangling.

*Three tight end set: Cameron Brate, Luke Stocker and Brandon Myers. Jameis rolls left and the pass is complete to Brate.

*FALSE START! Real NFL officials are working practice, as they were yesterday.

*Sims is swarmed in the backfield. Jailbreak on the O-line.

*Major Wright shows up with a run stuff to the left side of the O-line. Strong anticipation.

*Very pretty. Mike Glennon throws a laser to Brate with Kwon Alexander. Glennon’s arm has really been on display through camp. Lot of zip on many occasions, today included.

*Fun times. 1-on-1, receiver-secondary, work from five yards out of the end zone. Players are jacked up. Jameis completes to Mike Evans who juked Verner badly. Russell Shepard runs a lot of smack at Verner, who laughs at Shepard and appears surprised to be getting an earful from 20 yards away.

*Jameis complete for V-Jax with Grimes having no shot. #Dunkaneers.

*Daryl Smith appears to be grabbing a fist full of jersey. DROP! Wide receiver Freddie Martino

*Bradley McDougald blanketing Kenny Bell. Bell makes catch after three cuts. Too much time to develop. Todd Monken comes over to talk to Bell after play.

*Payback for Verner. Sweet breakup on V-Jax in the end zone. Crowd on hand liked that.

*Adam Humphries way to quick from Major Wright. Looked unfair.

*Mike Evans with a sweet catch over the head of Vernon Hargreaves. #Dunkaneers.

*Pass interference! Free agent cornerback Josh Robinson on Bernard Reedy, grabbing jersey.

*Another very tight slot route by Humphries. No chance for Chris Conte covering. Jameis liked that one, based on his reaction.

*Slant pass. Touchdown. Andre Davis with Keith Tandy covering. Another slant. Kenny Bell beats Jude Adjei-Barimah.

*ELEVATION! Perhaps the catch of the day. Wide receiver Jonathan Krause soars over Vernon Hargreaves to haul in a Jameis laser with his fingertips and holds on to the ground. (Video below)

*Joe’s camera spots Jason Licht, Bryan Glazer and J.R. Sweezy standing together on the sidelines. Caption contest!

*Back to 11-on-11: Grimes with a sweet breakup on Evans. But wait. Pass interference! Grimes has an extended chat with the official and appears frustrated.

*Uh, oh. A pre-snap whistle and Mike Smith is seen screaming his head off at the defense.

*Blitz! Jameis complete to Humphries. Chemistry there.

*Second teamers are in and Mike Jameis runs left but gives a nice inside cut when play breaks down.

*Back-to-back connections from Glennon to Reedy, the second with Hargreaves in tight coverage.

*7-on-7: DROP! Kenny Bell. Right back with a catch by Bell. Nice play about 10 yards on the left side.

*On side field pass rush 1-on-1s are in play. Camp meat center Ben Gottschalk handles Clinton McDonald well twice in a row.

*Back to 11-on-11, Glennon rifles a low through in heavy traffic to Donteea Dye. Complete. Nice grab.

*Jameis seen in passionate conversation with tight end hopeful Tevin Westbrook

*Red zone 7-on-7: From the 10 yard line, Jameis throws a rope high in the end zone complete. Inches from Kwon Alexander’s fingers.

*Incomplete! High over V-Jax.

*Now from the 5 yard line: Austin Seferian-Jenkins with a great diving catch in right corner over McDougald. That was an example of exactly why the guy was drafted.

*Pass Interference! Verner holding V-Jax in end zone.

*Bad throw by Glennon, batted down by linebacker Luke Rhodes.

*11-on-11: Jameis rolls right. Nobody open and he takes off.

*Surprisingly quiet day all around from Lavonte David.

*DROP! Very rare one by Sims on a short pass.

*Jameis and Shepard out of sync on slant.

*Another rope from Glennon, this time to Shepard about 18 yards down the right side.

*UPDATE: Joe has reviewed practice video while mowing down lunch and Joe has found a sack by Noah Spence, beating Donovan Smith cleanly. Ahh, the fine line of training camp. QBs don’t hit, so it often takes film to see what’s really happening in the trenches and the backfield. Joe will post the video later today.

*Back to the red zone and it’s a three yard quick inside pass to Doug Martin, followed by a touchdown throw to Brate. Size is winning today, this time over Grimes.

*Intense coaching moment spotted from Tim Spencer to Martin.

*Man, Dirk Koetter is really intense in the huddle with the second- and third-team offensive units.

*The Bucs snuffed out a slant! Tandy meets Humphries hard. Two-yard gain.

@Joe … “The Bucs snuffed out a slant!”. I see that you saved the best for last Joe.

  2. Lord Cornelius Says:

Looks like a couple flashy moments for JAG Rudy.
Not sure I’ve read of one drop all camp by this guy.

Are you starting to believe Joe?

  3. Joe Says:

Are you starting to believe Joe?

Joe gets scolded by Bucs types he trusts — has been for months — about Rudy.

  4. Lord Cornelius Says:

Also my band released their album recently if you like heavy / indie rock music.

I won’t link it per Joe’s rules but hope he lets me keep the post here. Just search “Too Many Humans” on Spotify / iTunes / YouTube/ Amazon / etc and you should be able to find our music by that band name. Go Bucs!

  5. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

    Thanks Joes!!

Is Banks in any danger of not making the roster? Does his skill set equate at all to Safety? I know he’s on the light side, weight wise.

  6. Joe Says:

Is Banks in any danger of not making the roster?

Banks hasn’t had a good camp, as mentioned in the notes. Plenty of time to turn things around. Believe it or not, the Bucs are deep at corner. Haven’t heard any word that he won’t make the team but it is unlikely he will start barring injuries.

  7. LifeOfABucFan Says:

For some reason when Smitty blows his top, it reminds me of the movie Scanners, where the guys head just blows up when angry..lol..don’t know why this flashed in my thoughts today..

    6 days guys…6 days….

  8. MarineBucsFan Says:

    “I’m so excited, and I just can’t hide it….And I know, I know, I know, I know Buccaneers I want you I want you”

We just can’t hide it, I’m about to lose control and I think I like it!!! HAHAHA

    the Pointer Sisters

  9. D-Rome Says:

Glennon has had a really good training camp. Years ago it used to be that it took a QB four years to mature as a solid starter. It seems that Mike Glennon has really come into his own.

  10. Mike Glennon Mob Says:

I understand Jameis is the starter but if Koetter were to treat all players equally Glennon would be taking most of the reps. He’s had a better training camp.

  11. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

Too early to be drinking, MGM, even for a Friday!!!

  12. tmaxcon Says:

you glennon folks are very entertaining. thank you from the bottom of my heart… man o man…. The dude has NOT taking a regular season or meaningful snap in a year and a half and he is magically “Coming into his own” seriously…. How does underwear football and a few camp practices translate into he’s ready to be a starter and he is coming into his own… If he was ready to become a starter Denver, Cleveland and a few others would have gladly dished out a 2nd, 3rd or 4th picks to ensure their qb position was shored up for the next few years but they are not believers obviously… that did not happen no one thought he was worth a pick.. but somehow he has “Come into his own without taking a game snap in 18 months.. Something does not add up… Liking the guy is one thing but man that is just crazy talk. glennon does not have 1/10 of what winston brings to the table. there is ZERO competition any talk or even speculation is crazy.

  13. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Has Miko showed up at practice?……or does she leave that for the real fans?

  14. D-Rome Says:

there is ZERO competition any talk or even speculation is crazy.

I never said there was. Your reading comprehension skills need improvement. Jameis Winston is absolutely the future and the most exciting player to watch on this team. All I stated is that Mike Glennon is having a very good camp. Everyone sees that he is except you apparently. You can bet once he’s a free agent he’ll be starting somewhere unless the Bucs decide to make him the highest paid backup in the NFL.

  15. Dewey Selmon Says:

I just don’t see the giraffe galloping and converting 3rd and 19 vs Atlanta last year. Jameis is the man. day drinking is a marathon, not a sprint.

  16. tmaxcon Says:

    D-Rome

i wish the best for him that being said i would not bet on him as a starter either.

  17. Joe Says:

Has Miko showed up at practice?

    Yes, today!

  18. Joe Says:

Also my band released their album recently if you like heavy / indie rock music.

I won’t link it per Joe’s rules but hope he lets me keep the post here.

Feel free to link to it. You were cool about it.

  19. c-spann Says:

Banks needs to be moved to safety. I think he would be a better cover safe and it would give the defense more versatility

  20. Buccfan37 Says:

This was good, I felt like I was there watching it as I read it. Maybe the Bucs see the value in keeping Glennon, a pay this or forget it stand.

  21. TheShaz Says:

We will lose Glennon next year and I wish him well. We might lose him sooner if other teams in dire need of a QB come to their senses and not try a wasted retread like McClown. So until that happens I am happy that he is our backup QB.

And congrats on the baby Mike!

  22. Wausa Says:

Glennon is good backup and is doing fine on the second team in camp but Jameis is performing much better than he is and he’s doing it against the one’s.

  23. D-Rome Says:

Banks needs to be moved to safety. I think he would be a better cover safe and it would give the defense more versatility

In regards to Banks having a poor camp it makes me wonder if the previous coaching staff saw things that the current coaching staff is now seeing for themselves. People were very critical of Lovie Smith benching Banks but the way he is performing in camp is sure looks like the benching was warranted.

This is concerning especially when you consider Banks is in a contract year.

  24. Waterboy Says:

From the different articles that I’ve been reading on camp it wouldn’t surprise me if Jonathan Banks didn’t make the 53 man roster. He looked promising at times as a rookie but hasn’t been able to build on that rookie season. They should give him a look at safety to see if he might be able to help out there before cutting or attempting to trade him.

  25. Waterboy Says:

Didn’t read the comments before posting but I agree with D-Rome and several others on Banks.

  26. Destinjohnny Says:

I don’t think it would be inaccurate to say that Mike g has had a really really good camp

  27. Pickgrin Says:

Thanks for the great practice observations Joe. Perhaps the “Dunkaneers” nickname was retired too quickly?

Hope so. We need to utilize that advantage more – especially in the end zone.

  28. COREYATX Says:

I love these daily notes, Joe. Thanks for all the hard work. On a side note, I’m up in Atlanta right now listening to their sports radio. They are all raving about the signing of Lance Moore. They are acting like a guy who had 29 receptions and 336 yards last year is gonna put them over the top. Ha ha

  29. Lord Cornelius Says:

    Thanks Joe!

If you guys want to check out my music here’s our first single on YouTube. You can check out others on our channel and see all the songs on Spotify / iTunes / etc. My brother is on the drums & I play guitar / sing

I know you’re a Van Halen fan Joe so you may like this (?). It’s a little more Muse/Tool than 80s rock but most our music features riffs to get heads bangin

  30. Buccaneers Says:

Thanks for recording each drop and pentalty. Both are major areas of concern. Banks needs to proove it now. Been waiting a while now for this guy. He dont sound like starters material.

  31. tickrdr Says:

    @Lord Cornelius:

Thank you for the link! I absolutely loved your rockin’ tune, and will promise to buy that one on I-tunes and check out the rest. Good luck to you and your band mates, hope you are successful beyond your wildest dreams.

    Tickrdr

  32. Pickgrin Says:

Nice song Lord C. I like the video style of showing each member playing/singing all their parts at once.

Drummer is a serious talent and vocalist has a good voice and nice range.

    Which band member are you?

  33. Lord Cornelius Says:

Thanks guys! I play guitar / sing in the band. It’s just my brother and I in the video as we recorded all the instruments. I just have different facial hair for different instruments hoping people would think it’s a 4 piece band which we are now actually lol. But at the time we were playing as a 2 piece
