Officially Not Ready For Camp: Louis Murphy, & J.R. Sweezy

July 26th, 2016
No Sweezy -- for now.

No Sweezy — for now.

It’s official!

New big-money guard J.R. Sweezy, the handpicked, free-agent replacement for Logan Mankins, will not be a “Day 1” guy at training camp. Wide receiver Louis Murphy (ACL surgery in November) won’t be either.

The Bucs officially placed them on the Active/Physically Unable to perform list. Of course, they can come off that list at any time. It’s noteworthy, however, because head coach Dirk Koetter said multiple times this offseason that he expected every Buccaneer to be ready for training camp.

It has yet to be revealed publicly just what type of offseason “procedure” Sweezy had. He has not practiced yet in a Bucs’ uniform.

The Bucs also signed Joel Hale, an interesting project at 6-4, 295 pounds. He was a tryout player for the Bucs this spring. He was played in 46 games for Ohio State, primarily on their defensive line.

The team also announced that formerly virgin center Garrett Gilkey was waived with a failed physical.

Let’s hope J.R. Sweezy isn’t the second coming of Carl Nicks.

  2. The Buc Realist Says:

When J.R. Sweezy call in sick, do they say “Sweezy is Queasy”?????????

  3. No_Bucs_Given Says:

Wow. Carl Nicks. That feels so long ago Rome. Lol

  4. stanglassman Says:

Hale is another DL to OL convert like JR. just to clerify what position he will be playing come camp.

  5. Defense Rules Says:

Bummer … but still optimistic for a 8-10 win 2016. And oh ya, now might be a good time to sign Roddy White.

  6. SeasonTixSince81 Says:

It aint easy being Sweezy, maybe too queasy from smokin with lil’ weezy?

  7. pete Says:

Kevin Pamphile’s opportunity to seize the starting guard position!

  8. BucFan20 Says:

Well isn’t this just special?? Can’t even get the whole team in practice together to begin with.

  9. mike Says:

not a good sign when your prime free agent undergoes a minor procedure and …. surprise, he’s not ready for camp after sitting out an entire off season.

  10. JJ Says:

And we could of had Richie Incognito. But Lovey did not want him (nor did Joe). What a missed opportunity. How is he working out Joe?

  11. Pickgrin Says:

Gilkey was still on the roster???

In the words of Dana Carvey imitating Carson – “I did not know that… That’s wild, weird stuff.”

Extra reps at LG for Pamphile and Evan Smith to start camp apparently…

  12. Mike Johnson Says:

Bucs overpaid Sweezy in free agency. I said it then and I’m sayin it now again. The guy is average..at best.

  13. Tom T. Says:

    Arent we all formerly virgins?

  14. Stpetebucsfan Says:

    JJ

You tell us how one of the biggest thug losers in the NFL is doing. Incognito is the very definition of a locker room cancer. Let Rex put up with the “nasty boy”.

Just wiki Incognito and look at the many, many chances he’s had. Look how many teams..especially if you count college…he has destroyed.

The only reason he’s behaving now is because of age and mediocrity. He’s got to cash a couple more year’s checks. No thanks!! I’ll take Pamphile over mental midget Richie Incognito any day of the week.

  15. Tom S. Says:

Not a good omen for the Sweezy signing. Carl Nicks was at least an all-world guard who was signed to a big-money deal before he spent the majority of his Bucs career in the tub. We can’t say the same thing about Sweezy.

  16. Buccaneers Says:

Hate the guessing games. They have to know where Sweezys at, wish they would just say. If hes gonna miss a week its not too huge a deal. If hes still rehabbing in three weeks we could be in some trouble.

  17. DallasBuc Says:

I don’t see why we can’t get an explanation about why he isn’t available. Hope this isn’t another classic Jason Licht free agency blunder.
    See what happens.

  18. SOEbuc Says:

I wasn’t too hyped about the sweezy signing. Payed a guy a lot of money that had an operation in the offseason and was known not to be much of a pass blocker. Now I’m even more pissed he’s not ready for camp but hopefully everything works out for the best

  19. University of Seffner Says:

Our bye week is at week 6. So by then, hopefully we’ll be healthy. The University of Seffner sends its regards to Murphy, and Sweezy.

  20. SCBucsFan Says:

Sweezy will start at a position he’s never played before and he won’t even get a chance to practice at it before the season begins. This is a disaster waiting to happen.

  21. BuccaneEric75 Says:

    No more Gilkey?! I can’t believe it!🙄

  22. LifeOfABucFan Says:

Gilkey had posted a tweet today for a home for sale..I am wondering if it’s his own..

I liked the guy..and he does have good hair..

  23. LifeOfABucFan Says:

Sweezy never changed his Twitter profile…still states he plays for Seahawks..

Yeah, this signing is as bad as the pound of hamburger meat I found in my freezer dated “best if used by Jan. 2011”..

  24. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

If J.R. Sweezy does not get on the field and fails to make the team due to his health issues (which were not acquired with the Bucs) do they still have to pay him?

This is just another FA failure by Jason Licht in my opinion. Can’t blame this one on Lovie Smith, Jason.

I’m not writing off J.R. Sweezy, but it is kind of ironic.

  25. BucTrooper Says:

I’ve been watching football since Super Bowl XvI. I have never seen an injury go so long where we don’t have a hint of what it is. We aren’t even getting the bullshizz “lower body injury” story.

My guess is he had a kidney transplant or something. My second MORE LIKELY guess is he had a testicle removed or it is something penis related. Seriously. Matt Harvey missed a start or two the season he returned from Tommy John surgery and no one knew what was wrong…. Turned out he had a UTI and was embarrassed.

  26. DemBoyzFromDaBay727 Says:

I’m not to worried about the news, I think there minor injuries that the bucs want to heal up totally so they don’t become a bigger problem. I’m actually worried about Murphy more Tha Swezzy. Let’s hope that knee isn’t puffing up on him. In the meantime we have depth to fill in for Swezzy, but it’s more about him getting acclaimed to his new team and position more than anything.

  27. LifeOfABucFan Says:

    LMAO@ BucTrooper…
