Peers Rank Lavonte David No. 53

David’s favorite bells were ringing

Very cool stat rolled out on NFL Network tonight during the latest Top-100 Players of 2016 show.

The segment revealing Lavonte David getting ranked No. 53, as voted by players, included data that David (2012-2015) has 62 more combined tackles than Derrick Brooks had through his first four seasons in the NFL (1995-1998).

Remember, Brooks often said through the Greg Schiano era that David was a better player than he was when comparing where David was in his career.

David was ranked No. 56 in the Top-100 last year. So it’s pretty cool that he improved in the rankings despite getting off to a very poor start in 2015, before having a great second half of the season.

These awards don’t mean much, but they do to David. “Your name have to ring bells,” David explained to Joe a few weeks ago.

David isn’t as good as Brooks, not yet. Sure, his stats are better, but the true comparison can’t happen until we compare careers.

    That said, I love LVD.

    My Theory On Defense

I believe that we had a horrible defense the last few years, with the exception of GMC and LVD. They attempted to carry a team that lacked the talent to succeed. Last year, GhengisKwon was added, and that made a big difference. He inspired the defense with his fire. Still a rookie, his game needed developing, but it wasn’t bad for being his first year. His addition made the Bucs capable of winning games.

His suspension canceled out that difference…so the Bucs lost those games at the end.

    Being understaffed, that’s what happens.

This year, he is back, but we’ve also got more help and talent. The scrubs that were backups last year are demoted or gone. Some of the starters from last year will now be backups. The starting talent has improved, and as a result, the backup talent has also.

While the defense needs a little time to develop, once they start pulling it together, things are going to be great.

I have a few doubts as to Mike Smith’s ability to put together a good defense (the Falcons defense was not that great in his years) but he’ll have more talent to work with than any of the last three DCs for the Bucs.
