“Maybe An 8-8 Team This Year”

Big-name voice and ex-player weighs in.

It’s not easy finding a legitimate NFL analyst who thinks the Bucs will lose more than they win this season.

And another big name has weighed in.

This time it’s Kurt Warner, the Super Bowl champion and two-time NFL MVP quarterback. Warner works for NFL Network and spends a lot of time tutoring quarterbacks. Yesterday, Joe shared Warner’s recent take/lovefeast on America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston.

Speaking to WFLA-TV, Ch. 8, recently, Warner said he expects the Bucs to be an average NFL team in 2016.

“I expect them to make some strides. I still don’t know if they’re in that playoff-caliber,” Warner said.

“I say maybe an 8-8 team this year. I do expect them to make some strides, and then again, if you can win a close one here or there and not give one away, maybe you can get up to that nine-win spot. But I’m going to say probably around .500 this year, right there on the cusp of the playoffs.”

Joe thinks it’s awfully tough to predict the Bucs are certain winners (aka 9-7 or better) in 2016.

First, the Bucs have a new head coach, one without NFL head coaching experience. Second, the Bucs still might have the worst starting quarterback in the division. That’s no knock on Jameis. Regular readers here know Joe loves Jameis passionately. However, Joe can’t say with a straight face that 22-year-old Jameis is better than Matt Ryan, Drew Brees and/or Cam Newton. Not yet.

The Bucs’ defense is a giant mystery, so any prediction is pure guesswork right now.

  1. SB with Jameis Says:

9 and 7 if the Lines stay healthy. 7 and 9 if they don’t.

  2. Dcbucsfan Says:

Unless 8-8 wins the NFC South, I don’t like it!

  3. The Buc Realist Says:

The real “core” of the team is very young!!! A new D-Coordinator and New (much improved scheme) against from the previous historically easy schedule to one of the Hardest schedules will all play factors!!!!

What the “Real” fans of the Bucs want to see is to start and I mean start to climb the NFC South Ladder!!!! Its time to find the light and crawl out of the basement!!!

    Go Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  4. Tom Edrington Says:

    I believe the Vegas over-under is 7……

At this point, too soon to call…..let me see the HEALTHY final roster….

  5. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    I want more….but I’d be satisfied with 8-8……that will show progress……I still believe 2017 begins a dynasty!!!

  6. Buccfan37 Says:

Warner… clean up on aisle 9, somebody just dropped a gallon glass jug of apple butter.

  7. BigHogHaynes Says:

From 6 wins to 10 wins is the only way to show definite improvement!

  8. SOGGY Says:

We are that team that surprises this year, we win atleast 10 games.. OH YA..

  9. Rrsrq Says:

Saw a QB power ranking yesterday, had Jameis at 14, in front of Matty Ice. Of course behind Brees and Cam. That opinion puts him middle of the pack in his second year, mmmmm, can’t wait. I’m optimistic, ten wins, team plays with a big disrespectful chip. Also saw a top ten running back groups and Bucs didn’t even make the cut, though they were the number one group last year.

  10. Fsuking Says:

Anyone who thinks Matty Ice is better than Jameis Winston must have their head so far up their ass that it creates an infinite paradox of head coming out mouth, back into ass and so on and so fourth for eternity.

  11. BucFan20 Says:

Wait. So ALL this yap about getting a franchise quarterback to replace Glennon .
He was the worst in the division. 4th. Bottom. Only had a record of what? Now you talk of the team has replaced him with a player who is STILL the 4th and will be after 2 full seasons? And if the 8-8 season is right that does make him 14-18. Still a loser. And remember, no excuses. So in other words you are waiting on the rest of the quarterbacks to go down hill or retire?

  12. DB55 Says:

right there on the cusp of the playoffs.

It’s better than being on the ‘verge’.

  13. Rrsrq Says:

Who predicted Carolina to go 15-1

  14. The Buc Realist Says:

    @Rrsrq

Especially after they won the division the year before with a 7-8-1 record!!!!! And some think that strength of schedule don’t matter!!!LOL

  15. Pickgrin Says:

8-8 is probably realistic. 9-7 or 10-6 seems possible. 11-5 would be awesome though. It’s high time the Bucs became “relevant” again and had their 1st taste of post season play in too many years. Licht is doing a great job of building this team so we will get there. Just not too sure it will be this year.

“on the cusp of the playoffs” sounds about right. Even 10-6 leaves you OUT of the playoffs as often as not unless you win your division.

  16. Buc1987 Says:

I see 8 wins too and I’ll be happy with that. Perhaps even happy with 7 wins if they’re not blown the ef out of games anymore.

10 wins is silly talk. Koetter and Co have a BIG mess to clean up.

  17. Waterboy Says:

8-8 is about right for this team. Still lacks solid talent in quite a few areas and lots of question marks on this team. Unproven pass rush, aging WR’s coming off knee injuries, suspect offensive line, suspect secondary and a young QB that’s trying to take the next step. Oh but I forgot it’s all Lovie’s fault so all of the team’s weaknesses were due to scheme.

  18. Tampa Tony Says:

8-8 would get Koetter an extension and the Bucs out of the basement

  19. Brent bull/buc Says:

@pickgrin 11-5 seems impossible. They won 6 games last year with an easy schedule. Further, 11 win teams are good on both sides of the ball. Our defense was lousy last year. I’d take 8-8. 9-7 would be good. Look at our depth at wr and dl and safety. You can’t have that many holes and win 11.

  20. Rod Munch Says:

Kurt Warner is a piece of garbage that helped cheat the Bucs out of a SB with that BS IR call. Warner can go back to bagging groceries, that’s what he’s best at.

  21. Capt. Tim Says:

    Young team. New coach
New defensive system always takes a couple years to fully implement and get team comfortable with it.

And, at face value- just a horrible schedule. Poorly spaced west coast trips. Playoff teams galore.

The NFL is all about injuries. Its what determines winning and losing.
Predicting how hard a schedule is, without knowing whos playing and whos not, is highly inaccurate

But at face value- the deck is stacked against us
    8-8 is gonna be tough
