In The Second Round Of The 2016 NFL Draft …

March 29th, 2016
Keanu Neal?

Keanu Neal?

Did Jason Licht tip a target area in the NFL Draft?

Yesterday, Joe brought you a Licht interview with NBC Sports Network. It was interesting that Licht specifically lumped the re-signing of Chris Conte into his category of “bridge” free agents, players who can help young players at their position develop.

Conte is a 27-year-old entering his sixth season. But the Bucs really don’t have other young safeties. Starter Bradley McDougald, a holdover from the Dominik-Schiano regime, enters his fourth season. Keith Tandy was a Bucs fifth-round pick in 2012. Major Wright has been around the NFL longer than Conte.

So to what young safety was Licht referring? Surely it wasn’t the two other camp-meat types on the Bucs’ inflated offseason roster.

Enter Charlie Campbell of WalterFootball.com, who focuses on the NFL Draft 24/7.

In his latest mock draft, he has the Bucs selected big-hitting, declared-early safety Keanu Neal out of the University of Florida.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Keanu Neal, S, Florida
Tampa Bay needs to improve its safeties. The Bucs could land an immediate upgrade with Neal.

Neal racked up 77 tackles with a pass breakup and one interception in 2015. As a sophomore in 2014, he had 45 tackles with three interceptions and four passes broken up. Neal was a solid defender for the Gators, but he needs to continue to improve his coverage skills and work on wrapping up rather than looking for the knockout blow.

Neal (6-0, 211) is a big, strong and instinctive safety who has impressed NFL sources. Teams know that he can serve as an in-the-box run safety, but they also feel he has speed and athleticism to cover. He is a natural strong safety who, in time, could also flip to free safety pre-snap.

Might the Bucs draft Neal in Round 2? Sure, if they snatch a defensive end with their first-round pick.

  1. Guzzie Says:

Safety class isn’t very impressive, the coverage safeties are small or slow, the in the box safety types get more small linebacker pub than actual safety notoriety, other than Ramsey of course, no other safety looks early round worthy, better to wait and snag a size/speed prospect like tj green or tyvis Powell after the 4th than waste a premier early pick on a bigger name

  2. Dylan Says:

Von bell is so much better and projected to go off the board early 2nd round. With Dirk koetter saying OSU and Clemson blows him away with prospects connect the dots. Von bell was the 34th best player in the country coming out of highschool and a major key on OSU undefeated teams and championship teams. I’m glad Jason does his DD

  3. Pickgrin Says:

God would it be awesome to have Ramsey. High end coverage talent and explosive athleticism. A 41″ vertical jump!!! Just think of the flexibilty he can provide playing at any spot in the backfield.

A dream that is near impossible to fulfill….

I do hope that Licht and Co. can identify and acquire a good young prospective safety somewhere in this draft.

  4. 813bucboi Says:

with the way the nfl is going I wouldn’t mind him next to kwon at lb…we do need younger safeties but they were the least of our problems last year…fix the cb situation by drafting Hargreaves and draft someone like billings, ogbah, bullard or dodd in the second…pick up kwon’s old teammate deione jones in the 3rd and grab carl nassib in the 4th…grab Bronson kaufusi in the 5th and rashad Higgins in the 6th…this draft is loaded with quality dlinemen that we should stock up on…GO BUCS!!!

  5. CrustyCrab Says:

    @Joe
I just read an article about Koetter and Marvin Lewis that really surprised me I believe our new line coach was a blessing from his ex roommate and one of his best friends. Its a good read could you link it for your readers. Bleacher Report

  6. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

I sure hope we don’t take a safety early. This team should focus on RT and DE in the first 3 rounds.

Conte gives them the luxury of waiting a year for the safety position…or finding one after the draft.

  7. JAB83 Says:

Don’t need no stinking safety at this point… However I like all the possibilities of this draft….

Also like some of the players 813 is referring to…

I still think we will have a draft tilted towards the O much like last year…. I would be willing to bet on it… Full back O-line Wide Receiver & Returner/Running Back (For when Simms is gone via trade/FA) and pehapps a TE cause a Full Back make Stocker expendable…

After that repeat the purge except on D….

  8. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

    What Bonzai just said.

  9. JAB83 Says:

Just like with Logan….. Your Bridge players don’t tend to spend multiple years grooming their replacements….

All this talk of signing these free agents so we can draft their replacements and have them mentor them this year is rubbish… Maybe one or two but yeah….. Finish one goal before moving on to another is what I am hoping for from OUR TEAM!!!!

CANT WAIT TO WATCH THIS PLAY OUT…. This has been my most favorite off season in the 20 plus years I have been a die hard fan!!!!

  10. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Speaking of the draft, there are a couple adjustments to where we pick:
    • 1 – 9th
    • 2 – 8th / 39th
    • 3 – 11th / 74th
    • 4 – 10th / 108th
    • 5 – 9th / 148
    • 6 – 8th / 186
    • 6 – 22nd / 197 (changed)
    • 7 – 11th / 232 (changed)

  11. Dave Says:

I’d have no problem with him on round 2 as long as a DE is taken in round 1.
I still see two picks in round from a Glennon trade. In this case I’d guess a WR and another defense be player – LB, CB, or DL … Whatever is best

  12. Warfield42 Says:

    Great assessment Guzzle

Green or Powell offer value in the 4th round. The both played in major conferences and offer the same type of size/speed/athleticism as Ramsey does. They just need more development.

  13. scott fitzgerald Says:

    Vonn Bell

  14. Mike Johnson Says:

I have no confidence in many of our current Defensive players in the secondary. Grimes is a significant pickup though. We gotta get another major piece back there somehow. Would love us to go DE at 9. But not mad if we go with a CB as well.

  15. Bucsfaninchina Says:

    Karl joseph ftw

  16. AC Says:

I’m with Bucsfaninchina Karl Joseph is who we need.. youtube him
Ramsey is just a pipe dream at this point

  17. Bucsfanman Says:

Outside of Ramsey and Bell I just don’t see a real impact player at safety. Neal is nice but is he an upgrade to Conte, Wright, or McDougald? I’d say no.
@Jab83- I don’t know about a “purge”. You can’t just replace all your holdover players and expect success. We don’t even know what we have at this point considering the philosophical change in defense. There might be a few hidden gems in there.
We are in a good-ish position leading to the draft. We should be able to draft BPA. When was the last time that happened?

  18. Defense Rules Says:

Looks like the Bucs will have a number of ‘bridge’ players on this year’s roster. The reality is that we had so many holes (particularly on defense) that it’ll be impossible to fix them all in a single draft. Our last 2 drafts have been very good (especially last year of course), but we’ll need 2 more very good drafts to get where we need to be. Hopefully this year we’re able to pick up a starting DE and Safety (Neal, Joseph or Bell would do fine), plus a CB and LB and DT/DE for ‘depth’.

  19. Cobraboy Says:

    Best. Player. Available.

Drafting for need rarely works out well…

  20. Bucs SB with Jameis Says:

Charlie Campbell also has us taking Leonard Floyd in the first round. If this happens then Neal would be a Vast improvement to our Back-end. Take it from this Gator, Neal is an Instant upgrade even as a rookie. No most people don’t hear his name so much, but that is because of Hargreaves and Jalen Tabor. If we rack up a Pass Rusher in the first as we should then Neal would be sweet in the second.

  21. godzilla13 Says:

Bucfanman – “Outside of Ramsey and Bell I just don’t see a real impact player at safety”. Why do you feel Bell will have an impact at Safety, not Joseph?

Joe, Keith Tandy was a 6th round draft pick. I like what Guzzie mentioned with TJ Green (6-2 209) Clemson. He ran a 4.34 at the combine and I even heard some talk about possibly converting him to a CB. Can you imagine a cornerback with that size and speed? The only Safety I would give up a second round pick for is Karl Joseph. Joseph is a special player. Not only are his hits a highlight film, he is one of the best coverage Safeties in the draft. Keanu Neal is in the same mold as Joseph only bigger. He just is not as good covering as Joseph is. The other is Neal’s lack of mental processing skills and field awareness. The question is if he has trouble with his reads in college, how will he handle the NFL? Pass.

  23. ndog Says:

813 what is with the love affair with Hargraves? Please point out one game versus a quality opponent he did well against. Plus he played in the SEC where it seems they have a rule against being able to throw the football. Just look at all the quality QB’s coming out of that conference. Oh wait….

  24. Bucs SB with Jameis Says:

ndog………..I am not advocating for us to get VH3 even though I am a Gator alum. This is not because I wouldn’t thoroughly love him being here, but rather because we need a pass rusher in the first. However it is obvious you don’t watch UF games or you would understand how disruptive a player he is. Revis doesn’t have numbers either for the same reason. People are stupid if they do. 99% of NFL experts say that he is The best pure corner cover in the draft but I guess your reasoning is sound and you know better.

  25. Bucs SB with Jameis Says:

” People are stupid if they throw at him” is what I meant. I hate tablets!

  26. ndog Says:

He is short and slow other than that he is great. He is not going against Kentucky, Vanderbilt, or Georgia and Tenn who run the ball 80% of the time because their QB cant throw. He will get eaten alive by Kelvin Benjamin, Dez Bryant, Cooks in NO, Julio, and any other #1 receiver just like he did in college but I guess you missed all those Gator games where he was worked over.

  27. martinii Says:

    Bonzai

Buccaneer. com published today shows Tampa at RD 6, Pic 183 and 197. Did you find out some new info?

  28. Destro44 Says:

Maybe he is thinking they can develop Gerod Holliman. The guy was an advancing instinctual ball hawking FS at Louisville, but his lack of tackling will and skill made him unwelcome for most inn the NFL. I think tackling can be taught, but ball hawking instincts are something done are born with.

  29. Bucs SB with Jameis Says:

LOL it is funny to watch someone call ALL the experts wrong with no sound reasoning. In case you have been asleep for a while some people actually make a living analyzing football. Mental myopia is a bad thing bro.

  30. macabee Says:

    Bonzai,

The Bucs draft order varies from round to round because there are multiple teams with a 6-10 record!

  31. Bucs SB with Jameis Says:

Im sure you make more than McShay, Kiper, Mayock and the likes so you probably aren’t interested in an analyst job. You should think about it tho.

  32. Stanglassman Says:

    813bucboi

Nassib and kaufusi in the 4th and 5th? I really like both and wish their was a chance to get them that late. Those two have been going in the early 2nd round in most of the mock drafts lately. Some experts have them as 3-4 rounders but I think we’d be lucky to get them in with our 2nd-3rd picks. I do hope you’re right. Hell, I hope we have a choice between Bosa and Ramsey with our 1st pick but I don’t see that happening either.

  33. martinii Says:

BSPN and Draftek like him but CBS Scout.com ranks him 10th best FS. Their is not a lot of starting talent at safety outside of Ramsey and Miller. Keneau would be a project, though he has good size.

  34. 813bucboi Says:

@JAB83….”Finish one goal before moving on to another is what I am hoping for from OUR TEAM!!!!”…exactly…even though im a huge gator fan, if Stanley is there we have to take him…we wouldn’t have to worry about the oline for years…GO BUCS!!!

  35. martinii Says:

    Not Miller, Vonn Bell. Sorry

  36. Guzzie Says:

Von Bell is still on the small side so is Karl Joseph and Darius Thompson is slow, miles killebrew is LB size at 6’3 220 but 4.65 speed….concentrate on the lines early unless there is some other worldly talent at WR or CB, at 9 the answer is no, a few CBs could be under consideration like Artie Burns or Xavier Howard at 39 both have size and speed unlike our current CBs we have 3 short guys n a one 6’2 guy with 4.5+ (not bad) but not 4.4 guys like burns,Howard with size

  37. CreamsicleBananaHammock Says:

813 what is with the love affair with Hargraves? Please point out one game versus a quality opponent he did well against.

Totally agree with this. The guy got completely toasted on a regular basis. Just watching their bowl game I thought that was enough to drop him out of the first round.

    The tape doesn’t lie

  38. ndog Says:

Yep all the experts said how great Trent Richardson, Justin Blackmon, Blaine Gabbert, Ryan Leaf, should I go on? I use my eyes and brain not what I am told to think.

  39. Guzzie Says:

    Our secondary lacks speed overall

  40. Bucs SB with Jameis Says:

Hindsight is 20/15 you simpleton. Should I start preparing a list of all the picks the experts got right??????? Do you have a few months to read? Lmao.

  41. Bucs SB with Jameis Says:

In order to use this ” brain ” of yours you have to actually have true input by actually Watching all of his games like the “Analysts” have done. That means to analyze in case you needed help there. Not just watching a few clips and looking at measurables.
As I have said I am not advocating for VH3 but to think he is a second tier player is pure un-adulterated stupidity
    Peace
    Go Bucs

  42. 813bucboi Says:

@ndog…no love affair I just recognize talent…you said one so here it is…10/12/13 at lsu…he held odell beckham to 2 catches 47 yards…after that season odell was a first round pick….

I don’t understand the love affair over ramsey…yeah he’s a freak athlete and a good tackler but you have to question his ball skills at cb and s…the kid has 4 career ints and it aint because qb’s were scared to throw at him…vhg had 4 this year 10 in his career…that’s why vhg is rated the best pure cover corner…that’s also why most if not all scouts and experts suggest ramsey’s best/natural position in the nfl will be at safety….you sound like an nole fan…how bout 11/30/13 vs fsu…he held rashad greene to 4catches 25 yards…2 quality opponents…2 nfl wr’s….the sec is filled with quality wr’s…the qb play in the sec has nothing to do with it…the sec is known for defense and the ground game…even though vhg is 5’10 he’s still rated above a few cb’s that are taller and faster…all those other cb’s and db’s including ramsey don’t come close to his technique which is why revis(5’11) is the best cb in the league….GO BUCS!!!

  46. ndog Says:

All that aside you never actually provided a game he did well against a quality opponent. Plus I never said he was second rate he is just not a top 10 pick. In fact if he was picked by us late in the 1st round I would be happy, but he is not a difference maker which is what a top 10 pick should be. No offense intended but I just don’t see it and contrary I do watch the games as I am FSU fan and love rooting against the lizards.

  47. 813bucboi Says:

besides the bowl game, a.cooper(VHG was a soph and cooper was a top 5 pick that season)… and k.benjiman(VHG true freshman season kb was a 22year old redshirt soph 1st round pick that season), what other bad game has he had?….3bad games vs 30+great games…sounds damn good to me….GO BUCS!!!

  48. LUVMYBUCS Says:

No worries Joe – my bad

  49. ndog Says:

813 I actually agree, Ramsey as a safety is a special player, as a corner I am iffy.

  50. ndog Says:

He got roasted pretty good in the SEC title game against Bama as well if I recall. At least one bomb where he was about 8 yards behind the WR but the under thrown ball made it a jump ball, and he got out jumped. Who would have guessed that he was beaten with speed and out jumped on the same play?

  51. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Projection
FS Chris Conte | Justin Simmons| Keith Tandy
SS Bradley McDougald | Miles Killebrew

Side bar: Still would call Minnesota – and ask what low round compensation. It would take – to acquire S/SS Antone Exum

  52. 813bucboi Says:

@ndog…what?…I just provided you with 2 games in which he played in where he shutdown the teams best wr…gm’s make a huge mistake why they only go by measurable…just watch the film…

    2014 top cb draft picks-
    Justin gilbert-6’0-4.3
    k. fuller-6’0-4.4
    darqueze dennard-5’11-4.4
    Justin verrett-5’10-4.4-pro bowler

    2015 top cb draft picks-
    trae waynes-6’0-4.3
    kevin Johnson-6’0-4.3
    marcus peters-5’11-4.4-pro bowler

verrett and peters were the last cb’s drafted in the first round mostly because of their measurable and both exceeded expectations and were pro bowl players…as I said earlier its all about technique, heart and whats between the ears…GO BUCS!!!

  53. 813bucboi Says:

@ndog…not so fast…go back and watch that play…vhg came off his man on an underneath route to try and help marcus maye#20…had marcus maye not blown the coverage it wouldn’t have been a big play….that was simply a blown coverage by the safety…GO BUCS!!!

  54. 813bucboi Says:

an athletic safety with no ball skills sounds like a average safety to me….GO BUCS!!!

  55. DB55 Says:

    813

The only problem I see with your position is that K. Ben is in our conference not R. Greene.

  56. Stanglassman Says:

VHIII is more likely to drop to the Bucs in round 2 than Nassib and kaufusi in the 4 & 5th round.

I do enjoy the Bucs mock drafts that are thoughtful & realistic.

  57. kraymuthaphukinglocz Says:

I just want us to WIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  58. ndog Says:

813 time will tell we will just agree to disagree. BTW if he is the pick I will clearly root for him but just like McCoy I will expect a game changer being a top 10 pick.

  59. macabee Says:

This draft is loaded with lots of good safeties. Good DEs are a lot harder to find, but drafting a good safety is the least of my worries. Just pick one or 2 if you’re feeling lucky. lol.

For your discriminating choice in no specific order:

    Jalen Ramsey/FSU
    Vonn Bell/OSU
    Jeremy Cash/Duke
    Karl Joseph/WVU
    Darian Thompson/Boise State
    Miles Killerbrew/So. Utah
    Jayron Kearse/Clemson
    K.J. Dillon/WVU
    Jalen Mills/LSU
    T.J. Green/Clemson
    Deandre Houston-Carson/Wm&Mary
    Justin Simmons/Boston College
    Tyvis Powell/OSU
    Keanu Neal/UF
    Tevin Carter/Utah

Everybody on that list could be improvement for the Bucs and I probably forgot 3 or 4! Lol.

  60. cmurda Says:

I like this kid and maybe there is potential there. I wouldn’t be depressed if we got him in the 2nd round but I don’t like him as much as like V Har in the 1st round. There’s no telling if Grimes, Banks or Verner will be on the team after this year. We need a young corner with skills more than a young safety unless said safety is Jalen Ramsey. If we went V Har in the first then I would prefer seeing us go DE in the 2nd. Like Joe said, if we go DE 1st round then it might make sense to get Neal.

  61. biff barker Says:

    Neal sounds much like Tandy.

  62. 813bucboi Says:

@stanglassman….if you think vhg drops to the second round you’ve never watched football…you do know that mid round is 3-5…GO BUCS!!!

You know BPA is a complete myth, right?

If the Colts have the first pick, for example, and the BPA is a quarterback, they won’t take him because they don’t NEED a QB. Every team drafts for need.

It’s just BPA at one of the positions of NEED.

  64. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    Bucs SB with Jameis Says
“In order to use this ” brain ” of yours you have to actually have true input by actually Watching all of his games like the “Analysts” have done.”

I agree with watching the games…but most of the “Analysts” don’t take the time to watch many games. They usually pick out 2-4 games where they focus on multiple players in the games, then move on.

  65. Stanglassman Says:

I agree that VHIII probably won’t fall to the 2nd round but like I said it’s more likely than carl nassib will be available in the 4th (#105) & Bronson kaufusi in the 5th (#148) as stated in your unrealistic mock.

The network had Nassib going to the Bucs at pick #38.

Yes- the mid rounds are 3-5, but that is beside the point.

  66. OneBuc55 Says:

Keanu Neal is on of my favorite safeties in this draft…he’s pretty good in coverage but what I like most about him is he’d much rather break a WR’s ribs than break up a pass; it’s been a while since we had a thumper in the secondary…i’d cosign this pick, he’s been rising up draft boards since the combine…

  67. Bucs SB with Jameis Says:

@OneBuc………..Not only is he a Thumper but he is one that has never been flagged for an Illegal hit. Text book hitter.

  68. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Speaking for Pablo

“The only safety Pablo cares about is on Bucs SB with Jameis’ 44….Pablo won’t set foot in Montana…..Oh, Pablo forgot…..Pablo could have used a safety several times so Pablo wouldn’t have so very many, many children”

  69. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

Karl Joseph n TJ Greene. Either one of those guys would work well imo. And bucboi great post. VH3 had 3 tough games. And killed the other ones. I would take him in a heart beat. There is a reason why he is considered the #1 cover corner n the draft. But people are gonna argue n b*t*h. That’s all they can do sitting behind their lil computers. Don’t worry about someone who obviously has no clue about facts and talent.

  70. 74 bucs fan Says:

Some cool dudes posting on here – love it!

Off topic – in SB era, I think some teams said to themselves, “man we’ve got Alstott, Sapp, Brooks, Lynch to deal with next week…”

One day soon, “man we’ve got Jameis, Evans, Kwon, Lavante, (yes MCoy), ‘some nasty DE drafted’…”

The Bucs are coming for you!

  71. 74 bucs fan Says:

Just watched the Rankins highlight reel. Draft that dude and pair him with McCoy!!!! Then draft the baddest mfing DE and sit back and watch those boys skull drag (to quote Nole lol) their opponents.

Then just give the ball to Fameis and listen to the scoreboard ring like a slot machine.

    The Bucs are coming…

  72. Bucs SB with Jameis Says:

    Lol Pablo!!!! Keep it Rockin’!

  73. Bucs SB with Jameis Says:

I am feeling it too ’74!
    Go Bucs!

  74. Delson Says:

I want tb to draft a wr bad. More than a de, after looking at the prospects. Tyler boyd michael thomas osu and josh doctson at the top of the list. Corey coleman is too small only at 5’9 to be anything more than a slot guy. Boyd thomas and doctson have decent speed and size. I like how doctson catches in traffic uses his lengthy arms and great body control to reach over thru or around the arms of the defender. Problem is he is a reach at #9 but is it really a reach if he is an effective route runner and pass catcher to replace vjax? I dont want to see flustered jameis again with dye humphries shepard n evans. Jameis is good enough to make below average wrs average guys. Him n vjax is a lethal combo n when evans gets his s… together i have no doubt they will be superstars. How bout we toss jameis another toy and blow the top off his potential. A go getter like doctson would be great!

  75. cmurda Says:

    Delson,

The WR class is uninspiring and our need at WR is practically invisible. I’m all for drafting a WR in rounds 4,5,6 or 7 but we having gaping holes at DE, CB, MLB, and Safety. We have 2 holes at DE IMO. On of our first 2 picks should be a DE.

  76. Delson Says:

Our mlb is kwon alexander thats a no need. Conte is our band aid safety but Macdougald and tandy are worthy enough to start imo. At cb we have true competition with robinson banks verner and grimes. De we have jacquis smith and gholston with ayers starting. Wr n cb would be my main concern next would be an ot. The des we have need a shot in this new defense. Schiano caught sh.. for stunting and blitzing but it created pressure on the qb. Lovie let the dline go one on one with the opposing oline beside one or two double teams. Look what happened to our entire defense. We gotta work with what we have on defense because u cant over haul a defense in one offseason. Mike smith will bring blitzes who knows david kwon and daryl smith could bring the pressure we need. I want us to top off our offense instead of leaving it incomplete. I cant stand how tb for the last idk 13 years looked incomplete on offense with a defense slowly falling apart.

  77. bucs4life86 Says:

    @Creamsicle

Roasted on a regular basis? What team were u watching? I’ve watched almost EVERY single gator game the last ten yrs and all of VH3 career and there was maybe two or three games in his whole career where he got beat. Name one corner that never got beat in college. Besides that meaningless bowl game were the whole team was uninterested, he only got beat by three players and that was A.Cooper, Benjamin, and Julio. Name one corner that has shut them down. There still isn’t one. VH3 is as solid as they come. He has all the skills to be a shut down corner and will prove it to u haters buccaneer or not.

I agree about CB, WR, and OT. We need to fill those positions for sure. A new DE would be nice. I have said it for weeks. And will continue to preach it til draft day.

    Round 1 VH3
    Round 2 Tyler Boyd
    Round 3 Carl Nassib
    Round 4 Neon Deion

I would draft o lineman in rounds 5-7 and hope 1 of them works out. Best draft in the league right there. 4 starters and hopefully another one eventually on the o line.

If we trade MG8 I would draft a safety like TJ Greene or Karl Joseph with that pick.

@funky…I would be jumping thru the roof if those were our first 4 picks….I say double down on the dline and take de/dt Bronson kaufusi in the 5th…kid is a beast…6th round grab a lineman from bama or ark…I hope Denver Kirkland is there in the 6th but he may be long gone…GO BUCS!!!
