Buccaneers Pay Big For Pro Bowl Cornerback Brent Grimes

Will Brent Grimes’ streak of three consecutive Pro Bowls continue?

Updated: 1:46 p.m. Your Buccaneers’ defense just got better!

Cornerback Brent Grimes still has game, having made the last three Pro Bowls as a member of the Miami Dolphins. He’s missed a whopping one game the past three years while amassing 13 interceptions.

Grimes, who turns 33 this summer, was a stud in Atlanta, but he blew his Achilles on opening day of 2012. Many teams doubted his ability to return in top form, but the Dolphins took a shot and it paid dividends.

Of course, Grimes played under new Bucs defensive coordinator Mike Smith in Atlanta.

This is damn exciting. Grimes plays with attitude, and he’s a good player.

Oh, and per Rand Getlin of NFL Network, Grimes is getting a two-year contract worth $16.5 million from Team Glazer. Ian Rapoport later clarified that the deal is for $13.5 million plus incentives.

Welcome to Tampa, Miko!

  9. MadMax Says:

    OH $HIT!!! YES!!!!!

Guys, calm down, our backfield just improved!

  10. Mac Says:

Not worth the headache his wife will cause

  11. PanthersSuck! Says:

    Keep Miko away!!!

  12. LifeOfABucFan Says:

She’ll help bring in more ticket goers…she’s a show in itself! AND she’ll put those obnoxious opposing team fans on her watch!

    Welcome aboard to the Grimes!

SMH at the guys not wanting her around…you go girl!

  13. Buc1987 Says:

I wanted him when the Falcons let him go. So I’m happy.

Bring Miko to Raymond Jameis to talk some shyte with me against opposing fans.

I like the signing. He’s old, but he’s better than what we have or got rid of.

  14. Pickgrin Says:

$8.25M per year sounds pretty steep for a 33 year old CB. Hope he’s got Ronde/Darrell Green type longevity in those old legs.

  15. ARGH_M8E Says:

    NIIIICE!!!!!!! Bit pricey, but NICE!

  16. CrustyCrab Says:

Really! I don’t here anybody complaining about this being Atlanta south come on let me hear it.

  17. Buc1987 Says:

Seriously I was pining for him before Miami signed him. I like the guy.

  18. Cobraboy Says:

Grimes, Verner and Banks give the Bucs a solid CB core.

    A good start.

  19. Delson Says:

16 million for two years. A 33 year old 5’7 cb with a psychopathic wife, this reeks of desperation. Grimes should thank mike smith. Smh 16 million to a cb who played for a playoff team in casey hayward would’ve made more sense.

  20. @FamousKoetterBroy34 Says:

WORST FANBASE IN SPORTS. HEIGHT AND OVERPAY??? YOU SAME FOOLS COMPLAINED WE WERENT OVERPAYING. I HATE 90 PERCENT OF YOU FOOLS. THIS GUYS OUR BEST CORNER AND IT FREED UO THE ENTIRE DRSFT FOR WIDEOUTS AND D ENDS

  23. CrustyCrab Says:

So I don’t hear he is over paid crowed, but Doug had to wait.

  24. Maze Says:

Some heart and true grit just entered the Bucs secondary

  25. Buc1987 Says:

    @FamousKoetterBroy34…I know I’m in the 10%. lol

  26. Mike Johnson Says:

Yet another bad move by the Bucs. Can’t wait to tell you’s..I told you so. But let me take a wild guess here…He’s probably an..ex Atl falcon? This is Pityful
Buc fans. The guy is as old as..Methoossa. And he has a wife who is a..I hate to say this.. a ghetto blaster. She is more of a problem who causes problems in the locker room and she..is not even playing. Yep..can’t wait. So much for your genius..Mr Licht.

  27. LifeOfABucFan Says:

    @ Buc87…

Bring Miko to Raymond Jameis to talk some shyte with me against opposing fans.

    ____

    YEAH!

and people forget how good she is with fans…buys them food, gives jerseys out..and does a lot for the community..

I guess as a woman, I could only wish I could be like her in the stands..

  28. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Licht, Big Ups Bruddah #respect

Now Sign Greg Hardy & Pot Roast

  29. MadMax Says:

Me too 87. I posted in the other thread how I wanted him a few years ago. Smaller guys like that keep a lot of spring in their step as they age, just like Ronde did, and he’s still talented. I like this signing.

Now to go after a DE. And yes Im going to say it…..HARDY!!!

  30. Delson Says:

It doesnt free up the draft. Cb is still a need. How many are confident we keep banks or verner next year? If verner doesnt play at pro bowl level he’s gone considering his contract. If banks cant cover the slot he’s gone (contract year). So who do we have 34 year old grimes?

  31. Bucfan951 Says:

    @famouskoetter: you’re right on!

  32. the real Bucobruce Says:

    Woooooo,Tampaaaaaaaaa

  33. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    MadMax

I really hope Licht signs S Tony Jefferson to an offer sheet.
Then double down and trade a 3rder to Seattle for Kam Chancellor

  34. MadMax Says:

    YO LUV!!! Sup Brotha!!!

I know Im feeling a little better now. And on your side too about Hardy. Fk the haters, let em hate while we improve!

Whats your thoughts on Jaylon Smith if he’s still there in the bottom of the 1st? I’d say move up and grab him. Yes he may miss all of the 2016 season, but the return we’d get will be GOLDEN!

  35. the real Bucobruce Says:

love this signing some people on here are such idiots, now Andy we have the best d-tackle two of the best linebackers in the league 1 Walling be getting better make that both actually and now a solid cornerback and I do believe burner will be stepping back up now reunited with his old coach I haven’t been this excited since the Gruden hired I guarantee playoffs or I will run naked on the field the last game of the year call me on it

  36. ElioT Says:

    Like the signing but…

We could have had him and Sean Smith three years ago, and kept our 4th Rd pick for the same money we paid “Mevis the Mercenary”…

    Rock-star my a**!

  37. Broy3434famouskoetter Says:

1987— this site gets worse and worse. This guys undoubtedly the best available. Perennial pro bowl player and immediately starting nickel corner. Now the real verner the real banks and grimes—with Mcdougald Tandy and draft two d ends and a wideout

  38. the real Bucobruce Says:

    Verner the burner

  39. Delson Says:

Safety lb de and possibly another dt are still our MAJOR needs. Behind that we need a rt fb wr depth

  40. Guzzie Says:

Backup caliber guard and over the hill CB…both over paid…future looks bright lol

  41. Tom S. Says:

March 2013 at One Buc Place: ‘Mr Dominik, Brent Grimes says he is willing to sign a one year prove-it deal for 5.5 million dollars. I think we should do it.’

Dominik: “No! We must trade our 13th overall and 4th round pick to the Jets to pay 16 million for Darelle Revis! Don’t you know, that’s THE PLAN!”

Brent Grimes would go on to 3 straight pro bowls with the Dolphins while getting paid less than half of Revis, who would spend one 4-12 year with the Buccaneers, win a SB with the Patriots and return to the Jets who used the selection Dominik traded for Revis to draft defensive rookie of the year and pro bowl DT Sheldon Richardson. Joe’s love for Dominik would remain unfazed.

  42. James Walker Says:

I guess he struggled his way into his 3rd straight Pro-Bowls.

  43. Broy3434famouskoetter Says:

AND YOU CANT OVERPAY A TWO YEAR CONTRACT WHEN WE’ll have FIFTY MILLION EVERY YEAR OF HIS CONTRACT AND 60 MILL IN CAP SPACE WHEN HIS CONTRACT EXPIRES. “Reeks of desperation—dude the guy got his worth and wanted to play for Mike smith. We didn’t have to overpay. Instant upgrade. Frees up the draft completely. Wake up u damn morons. This team is so much smarter tHan were used to

  44. finishers Says:

Your all a bunch of crybaby m*****f***** the bucs just got a pro bowl cb for 8.5 mil the going rate is 10 to 12 mil !!! oh were not doing anything in FA. oh were over paying this guy oh I don’t like this guy cry, cry, cry, cry!!!!!

  45. MadMax Says:

@Luv, yeah, we need Safety help big time!

  46. Ben the Ga Buc Says:

His base is 13.5 mil over 2 years, with incentives he can get to 16.5. So it’s really 6.5 mil a year. Not 8.

  47. Guzzie Says:

WHATEVER……can’t wait for that extremely high 2017 pick

  48. Buc1987 Says:

Miko…hit me up when you let me know where you’re sitting….lol

  49. mac Says:

He is the only CB left that is worth a crap!!! Wake up you IDIOTIC clowns!!! We basically gave the guy a one year deal worth @ $8 mil… WTF were we supposed to do? Draft three rookie corners and hope they can all start? Please stop embarrassing yourselves and the rest of Tampa Bay… OMG! Morons!!!

  50. NJBucsFan Says:

    meh

  51. BoltIsle Says:

He’s not the problem, she is.

I trust he’s smart enough to have clearly drawn lines before signing.

That said, she was quiet in Atlanta. Miami is miami.

  52. Delson Says:

    https://mobile.twitter.com/adamhbeasley/status/708350478057390080

  53. Buc1987 Says:

    and let me know.

    I lost me glasses. lol

  54. Q Says:

    Love this pick up

  55. Buc1987 Says:

    BoltIsle…Tampa is Tampa.

If she sits next to me, we’re talking smack all game long.

  56. WalkdaPlank Says:

    This is good……but…..

    RESIGN STERLING MOORE! (still available?)

  57. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Tony Jefferson, S, Cardinals
    • Low-tender level (no compensation)

Tony Jefferson “Leagues Most Underrated Safety” Highlights HD : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pV_nLcoEsyU

  58. Buc1987 Says:

    Jennings, Jenkins or Grimes? Hmmm.

  59. MadMax Says:

@87, I’ll come down and join you all too! She’s a trip!

Im watching Bosa do his pro day right now and Im telling you, we just might get him! Im feeling it man!

  60. Rrsrq Says:

So we scream about paying DM who has done more for the team, but pay Brnt Grimes how much. Like the signing but that’s a lot, but I also think he can really mentor Banks better than Verner was able to or Jenkins could.

  61. salish_seamonster Says:

Free agency blues got you down? Irrational, catastrophic thinking ruining your life? Are you annoying those around you with incessant complaining and b!tching?

    (813) 964-1964

  62. LifeOfABucFan Says:

@madmax..I’m watching the pro day too, but are you that impressed with Bosa? I’m still so iffy on him..

and the rest of you knocking this signing…you are a big jobbie!

  63. DefenseRules Says:

What’s with all of these ‘over-the-hill’ comments? I don’t get it. Brent Grimes played in 15 games last year and had 4 INTs. That’s 2 MORE INTs than ALL of our Bucs CBs had together last year. And his 42 tackles weren’t bad either. I’m also going to assume that he’s pretty familiar with Mike Smith’s defensive philosophy (a plus).

Rapaport says his contract is for $13.5 mil base for 2 years plus $3 mil in incentives. That’s CHEAP for a starting CB with his experience in today’s market.

  64. thunderchunkyPA Says:

So the Bucs get a guy who has made 3 straight pro bowls and folks are bitching? Good gravy….

  65. ElioT Says:

Again, I like the signing, but damn we could have had this guy in his prime, plus a 1st and 4th Rd pick, and a boat load of cash instead of Revis’ selfish a**.

    Dominik sucked…

  66. Buc1987 Says:

    salish_seamonster..lmao too funny.

Max…don’t tease me about Bosa. Don’t do it. I’m trying not to jinx anything and let it all unfold. How many more days until the freaking draft? Yeah come down and have a party at Ray Jameis with us sometime already.

    Miko….seek me out.

  67. 813bucboi Says:

how did we improve? he wasn’t even the best cb on the dolphins…he’s not even better than sterling moore…33 years old cb that lost a step…we should have gave Mario Williams that money…we certainly overpaid for grimes and I bet he will be released around this time next year…licht is just pissing in the wind….GO BUCS!!!

  68. Bucco Brice Says:

The guy is a gamer! anyone doubting this signing hasn’t watched him play very much…Bravo Bucs!

  69. Buc1987 Says:

    LOBFan….Bosa’s a gamer.

Okay I’m shutting up now. Jinx and all.

    I’ll take Buckner too…

  70. DB55 Says:

    Optimus Grimes. Nice!

  71. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Best way to protect an aging defensive back.

    Sign some crediable pass rushers.

    Sign Greg Hardy!

  72. bculaw Says:

This is a win on both sides of the ball. Bound to pick up a couple of INTs for our defense, and darned if he didn’t seem to pick off at least one ball every time he played us in the past – a concern we no longer have now that he is on the roster.

  73. mac Says:

    @813 bucboi

So you don’t like giving Grimes “the money” – a player who has been in three straight pro Bowls… But you wanted to give”the money” to a 31 year old DE who made 19 tackles and 5 sacks last year…

    SMFH!!!

  74. Strider ....Sec 147 Says:

Hell yes so exited Brent Grimes can ball!!!! This dude is a stud gonna help KWON and just this whole defense big time !!!

  75. LifeOfABucFan Says:

I tried to send miko a tweet..and she took down her page literally one minute after the news broke..

I have a Kwon jersey..love that kid! But I want a Miko one next!

I do see he’s caught everything today..so I need to see a bit more I guess..

  76. Tiny Tim Says:

I will support the bucs on this. Chances are only the first year is guaranteed. Heres hoping miko is not a distraction. Thats my only concern.

  77. LifeOfABucFan Says:

    ^^
    last line is about bosa..

  78. Jeagan1999 Says:

Don’t know if we paid too much, but he has been a very good player in this league. If he can help the defense, then why not. I’ve been pretty hard on Jason Licht so far in free agency, but I will hope this guy has got enough left in the tank to help us.

  79. Rob in Land O' Lakes Says:

This guy is a solid corner and the team is only on the hook for two years

I love the signing and I want to for Miko! Miko, come tailgate with us at Al Lopez Park…. You will fit right in!

  80. Rob in Land O' Lakes Says:

    *I can’t wait for Miko*

  81. DaRealistBucFan Says:

Brent Grimes Blows! I Hope Licht is FIRED after this season!

  82. mac Says:

Go away trolls… We’re not taking your bait…

  83. LifeOfABucFan Says:

    @ DefenseRules.

    You nailed it spot on!

  84. Rob in Land O' Lakes Says:

A new JBF Promotion: MMA Night

Miko “are you }#%^ing kidding me” Grimes

    Versus

Amanda “Don’t kiss me because my husband has MRSA” Tynes

  85. Miko Says:

Brents a stud DaRealist! Lovie blows…

  86. MadMax Says:

@Life, Bosa is the real deal…..size, strength, BLOODLINE! He’s already a beast among the boys in college….and he’ll be a beast amongs the men in the NFL. As will Buckner. That kind of talent is born and bred, not taught, and you have to go after it when you see it. Once its educated and refined, it has winner written all over it.

  87. Tiny Tim Says:

I see that miko shut down her twitter account. Maybe the bucs told her to. As i said on another thread, her tweets about players and management was a distraction in miami and the team talked to him about it several times. I did not want that here, but its good to know the bucs possibly nip that nonsence from the door.

  88. LifeOfABucFan Says:

    @ Buc87 @rob

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DT6fs84Vo8I

Yeah! Opposing team fans will fear her!

  89. Bucsfanman Says:

I cannot believe some of the BS you people spout. For 2 1/2 days we’ve heard nothing but crying from people about how the Bucs aren’t spending, blah-freakin’-blah! They go out and sign a DECENT FA and now you’re crying that we overpaid, he’s this, his WIFE (of all things) is that, blah, blah, blah. You guys (you know who I mean!) are an embarrassment to the fan-base. Enjoy the ride, root for your team. Stop trying to find fault in everything they do. Football is a GAME! Chill!

  90. LifeOfABucFan Says:

    @Madmax..

Thanks..I guess there’s so many good ones coming out in the draft for us..yikes..lol..and that’s a good thing..

Did Bosa’s brother dress up in Titans uniform? did I just hear that?..

Not getting off topic, but seems like Fin fans are not too happy they let Grimes go..I am waiting for my Uncle Guido to call me tonight to complain about his Fins..lol…

  91. unbelievable Says:

For the people who want to cry about overpaying people….. 33yr old Grimes for 8mil a year?

Whatever, it’s not my money, and I guess we’re not using it for anyone better.

  92. darin Says:

    Ben
No they can’t be happy. N whoever says grimes can’t play anymore hasn’t watched him much lately. Guy can ball. He will produce. Good signing and they didn’t overpay

  93. unbelievable Says:

The more I think about it, the more I like the signing. Only concern is his age.

  94. Bucsfanman Says:

    ^^^What he said!

  95. BucFan20 Says:

If Coach Smith thinks he still has it and can help and maybe mentor than I won’t question it.

  96. George Brito Says:

This guy was a thorn in our ass when he played for ATL. He has this freakish ability and these types of players hold up well with age. I say we bring Barber back! Man I thought he would never retire and still played decent his last year. I welcome Grimes to Tampa! He will get 5 picks for the Bucs next year. Good start for Koetter. B- for free agency so far.

  97. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

I’m fine with this signing, but not impressed. He’s old…2 years sounds about right.

And it will buy us time. At this point, we need to focus on quick fixes to last a year or two…because it seems Licht is fully committed to the draft.

  98. nate123455789 Says:

Joe please drain how he can cover any of the falcon wideouts?

  99. Rod Munch Says:

He’s still productive, so I guess the question is if he falls off a cliff or not. But the Bucs have tons of cap room, so they need to sign someone if for no other reason than to get the salary floor. I like the signing – now go and get some sort of DE.

  100. Greg Says:

    He was horrible last year

  101. buccfan305 Says:

The Dolphins are the kings of picking up somebody’s leftover garbage so if we’re picking up players from them what does that say about us. SMMFH!!!

  102. buccfan305 Says:

That crazy-a$$ wife of his, God only knows what’s in store for us when she comes to town. Wonder if she’ll get a lifetime ban from Raymond James

  103. Destinjohnny Says:

Age dosent matter at cb said no 1

  104. MarineBucsFan Says:

YES!!! I go away for a few hours and come back to this…..Hell Yeah

  105. Trubucfan22 Says:

We are getting him at 7-8 mill a year. For a CB, that is about average. Consider this. The top 5 CBs make 14 mill a year. Grimes isnt an elite CB but he is a damn good one. An instant upgrade, and at a reasonable price.

Glad to have you here Mr and Mrs. Grimes.

  106. Aaron Says:

Damn if we do damn if don’t

  107. Dave Says:

    Sweet.
Haters are going to hate regardless. Screw them. The o line and DBs have improved.
They are still drafting another DB.

  108. 813bucboi Says:

@mac…which would help our team more…a 33year cb that had 4ints or a 31 year old de that post 3 str8 years of 10plus sacks before rex moved him to lb….Mario is younger and plays a position that we got zero production out of…it doesn’t matter if we have revis, Sherman and pat p, if the qb has all day to throw, he will find someone open….smdh…GO BUCS!!!

  109. HIRE JIMBO Says:

LOVE THE SIGNINGS. Sombody said about trading a 3rd to Seattle for K. Chancellor. I LOVE IT

  110. USFBUC Says:

I like it, for a bit there Licht had me wondering what was going on but we have now re-signed DM, added talent on the O line, and brought in a guy who can intercept the ball. We still need to go all defense in the draft but we are potentially improving.

Also we may have our new OLB already on the roster playing DE currently in Howard Jones so that position may be addressed already too. The Steelers were working on him as an OLB before we snagged him.

  111. wesley Says:

    meh

  112. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    nate123455789 Says
“…please drain how he can cover any of the falcon wideouts?”

He won’t. He will cover the slot, where aging CBs usually go to. Considering the weakness we have up the middle? I think that’s a good thing.
