Koetter Relishes Getting Slapped

Dirk Koetter talks to Joe about yes men.

Dirk Koetter talks to Joe about yes men.

Remember when general manager Jason Licht talked about getting “Koettered,” referring to his ideas sometimes getting shot down hard by Dirk Koetter?

Well, Joe talked about that style of communication with Koetter privately in Indianapolis last week.

Koetter hired an offensive coordinator/wide receivers coach Todd Monken in January. The two are old friends and coached together in Jacksonville, where Koetter was offensive coordinator and Monken handled receivers. Monken moved on to become a successful college coordinator and a winning and surging head coach at Southern Miss.

Joe talked to Koetter about Monken’s new role and asked Koetter if he’s looking for Monken to study the Bucs offense and slap Koetter around every time he sees a mistake or a poor decision, ‘Hey Dirk, what the hell were you doing there?’

“Yeah, exactly. You nailed it,” Koetter told Joe.

“When we finish a cut-up every day, I always try to ask him, ‘Monk, what did you think about that?’ Because he’s not a guy that’s going to mince his words. He’ll tell you what he thinks. That’s why he’s here. That’s what I like about him. It’s great to have a fresh set of eyes on it.”

It’s awesome to hear that Koetter doesn’t want to surround himself with a sea of yes men, which is the best way Joe collectively can describe Lovie Smith’s defensive staff.

Good for Coach Koetter. he wants to get things right, not just be right.
Once again, we have not heard one peep from Lovie since the late night office clearing. With ALL the outrage from his firing, makes you wonder.
No sniff of any kind of job? Not even a TV gig?

  2. Erik with Clean Athletics Says:

So much happier with our coaching now. Hallelujah

Tv gig for Lovie? Omg, he’s one of the worst people in front of a camera that I’ve ever seen.

Coaching job for Lovie? Omg, he’s one of the worst coaches I’ve ever seen.

Great guy, but he has nothing to offer of any value to the sports world any more. He needs to enjoy his millions and find something else to do with his life.

  3. The Buc Realist Says:

Too bad that some of lovie’s yes-men extended to some of the local media!!!!

  4. Jerseybuc Says:

What a breath of fresh air this is…..

  5. William Walls Says:

I thought Lovie Smith did a fantastic job!

(When he coached linebackers under Kiffin)

  6. Buc1987 Says:

Realist which local media would that be?

  7. biff barker Says:

Nice that the new staff has a history with some measure of success together.

Drama and friction over ideological differences is minimized when everybody pretty much knows who they signed on with.

Time is better spent when you can focus on the X’s and O’s. The players have no where to run and complain to when the staff is cohesive as well.

  8. Buc1987 Says:

    Mike Johnson will say :

He’s going to get slapped and slapped real hard. Him and that BACK STABBER Licht if they don’t win and win quick. If not, he can go join Lovie and Schiano fishing on the pier in 2 years. Back stabbers. Better start winning soon. You’re on the clock back stabbers.

  9. BigHogHaynes Says:

LOVIE did it his way, it didn’t work fast enough for TAMPA, Coach K The CO-CONSPIRER will do it his way! Playoff Bound or you will be BACK-STABBED and Mike Smith will be Head Coach in 2017!! THE CONSPIRACY RUNS DEEP!!

  10. Maze Says:

Still can’t believe the Glazers were drunk enough to hire that outdated bum to run a team of men. 2 years too late on that justified firing. What a joke

  11. The Buc Realist Says:

BigHogHeinous says that NFL GM Licht backstabbed! The Realist says that NFL GM Licht just took out the trash!!!

  12. Mike Johnson Says:

Pretty nice imitation there Buc1987…Close but no cigar! Here’s my real quote…
Koetter ain’t seen no slappin yet. Wait until he starts getting slapped with all of those losses and his smile disappears during those Post game conferences.
There, now that’s more like me!!

  13. Erik with Clean Athletics Says:

Mike Johnson, what losses are you referring to bcuz there’s probably not gonna be many of them around these parts for the next 5+ years now that we have stockpiled some talent and have a (potentially) great coaching staff.

  14. Buc1987 Says:

Damn it Mike I did miss big time. It’s BigHog that uses the back stabber line…

  15. Mike Johnson Says:

Its ok there Buc1987, I’ll keep my..pessimism comin for sure. Unless..we start winning and make next yrs playoffs. Then and only then will I issue an Official JoeBucFan apology to all. Until then? I’m just an ole time Buc fan who is..sick and tired of the hype and losing.

  16. Mike Johnson Says:

Erik with clean Ath…It remains to be seen. Anything can happen though. IF….our Defense starts playing angry and aggressive.

  17. Evo Says:

What I find hilarious about the back stabbed line is once the GM gets on the radio with the big b*tch.. I mean big dog. Big dog will kiss his ass left and right and suck up to him. Just like he did jameis after his personal smear campaign he launched to try and get Mariota. I’d have more respect for him if he kept his hard stance and simply attempted to destroy jameis when he interviewed him. But he just kissed his ass. No respect.
