Saints 24, Buccaneers 17

One ugly flashback Sunday

One ugly flashback Sunday

Way to bring your A-game to the home fans in the heat of a playoff chase.

What exactly was that hot mess on the field this afternoon at the Den of Depression?

Joe knows exactly what it was.

It was 2014, courtesy of the Dropaneers.

The defense was carved like a Thanksgiving turkey, and the offense looked like the ghosts of Josh McCown, Marcus Arroyo and Michael Clayton were back haunting Bucs fans with dreadful energy and a sorry lack of precision.

Drew Brees rarely was breathed upon, en route to going 19-for-22 for 196 yards and two touchdowns in the first half. He finished a whopping 31-for-41 for 312 yards.

Your Buccaneers’ NFC best run defense was stout, but nothing else in red was.

One could sit around and question Lovie Smith for not taking a shot at the end zone to end the first half, instead settling for a field goal. One could also wonder why Lovie didn’t go for it on 4th-and-1 (or 1 1/2) in the third quarter, instead settling for a failed 47-yard Connor Barth field goal attempt into a blustery wind.

But that’s just nitpicking. The Bucs were lousy today.

It was simply inexcusable with the season on the line.

Bucs have a lot of growing up to do.

    outcoached and outplayed!

  2. ElioT Says:

This team is stocked with a bunch of posers.

    Siege my **** losers!

    Go Sucs!!!

  3. NJBucsFan Says:

And this is why I continually vote little confidence in Lovie.

  4. lurker Says:

so what happens if the bucs close out with four losses?

  5. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    Lackluster.

So much for winning 4 straight. The defense badly needs a draft.

I predicted at the start of the season that if Bruce Carter ever started, he would get injured.

    And he did.

Penalties were horrid. Focus was worse.

    Ah well…next game up!

  6. Schlomie Says:

It all comes down to coaching Buccaneer scumbags.

  7. cmurda Says:

Next season. That’s what that failure at Ray Jay has led to. This team should be disgusted. particularly nobody-a Dye and this defense that looked as undergetic as I’ve ever seen. Play like the playoffs are in reach instead they swallowed themselves whole. This team is several defensive players especially edge rushers (I’m talking to you Howard Jones getting nowhere near the Qb but good enough to put a hands to the face that cost us 7 crucial points).

  8. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Offense sluggish…..Jameis off target some……and, of course…..thanks Dante.

    Defense…..no pressure…..missed Kwon…..penalties at awful times….

  9. Lovie Is Dog Poo Says:

That was a rotten egg, a stinky fart, a total turd. Now they’ll finish 8-8 and miss all the top defensive talent and settle for some reach.

  10. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Bucs will not close with 4 losses. They’ll win the next 2…but I think the wild card is blown…

…which actually suits me. I didn’t want playoffs this year anyway. I want improvement without a late first round pick.

    This year.

  11. Buccfan37 Says:

Winston and the pass game seemed to suffer from the wind also. One step forward, a big step backward. Not a good outing.

  12. BucPuck Says:

    Penalties, penalties, penalties!!!

  13. BucsFanForever Says:

Now we just need the Vikings to keep tanking.

    Still hope.

  14. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Defensive injuries are starting to pile up in the second half of the season. Who could have seen that coming?

Oh wait…I did…before the season started. Fourteen injury prone players signed to defense. What else could we expect?

  15. Imsickoflosing Says:

I am so sick of Lovie smith and his horrible subpar coaching and lack of effort by the Bucs. Super pathetic. No one should be payed or keep a job for being so bad. A crappy sport where overpaid people get paid and have no recourse for failing. Pathetic. I am officially done with this joke of a franchise.

  16. OneLove Says:

Horrible effort by our players this afternoon!! I can’t wait until we DRAFT some replacements for these SCRUBS!!!

  17. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Also…Koetter did not run Martin as much as he should have.

  18. TJ Says:

I guess people on the bucs website can stop talking bout how we can get in playoffs . I feel like we completely overlooked the saints and we over reacted like many of you are doing now . The team is getting better but will be inconsistent cause of there youth stop overreacting

  19. lurker Says:

i thought people stated we’d go 4-0 to end, now it is 2-2. we’ll see what happens thursday.

  20. ElioT Says:

Mike Evans and ASJ can both s*ck a fat one.

All Evans does it bitch like s little girl playing with barbies!

All ASJ does is get roughed up and celebrate after making one play like a classic poser.

McCoy and David are career losers and are only good for a handful of plays a season.

This team is a polished turd when they win and a bowl full of rancid diarrhea otherwise.

    Losers!

    Siege this!

    GFY Sucs!

  21. OnlyGodnoles Says:

What’s the deal with bucs receivers always putting out signature drops in every game???????????????????????????????????

  22. Rob Says:

The usual dumb a$$ penalties cost us another game. Bunch of losers crapped the bed with the season on the line. Inexcusable idiot penalties. We are no playoff team and got beat at home by a really sucky saints team. Dismal

  23. Patrick Says:

We need to go wide receiver in the 1st round. When you have Dye on the field, you know that’s a position of need

  24. AceofAerospace Says:

We are so much better than last year. I think this is the last year we’ll be saying “wait til next year”, before the playoffs begin, for a long time. Go Bucs!

  25. Lovie Is Dog Poo Says:

That was a complete team loss, coaches sucked, players sucked, fans sucked. No urgency for what was a must win game. Piss poor effort and the results show.

  26. lurker Says:

bye, eliot. don’t put yourself through what you think is cr@p. the bandwagon is getting lighter.

  27. Supersam Says:

Guess we don’t have to worry about Keotter going anywhere, offense is pathetic.

  28. gotbbucs Says:

Junior varsity wide receivers and junior varsity secondary. Be happy it wasn’t worse.

We probably arent going to make the playoffs, but with $54 million in cap room and a full arsenal of draft picks I still am confident in the future.

  29. lurker Says:

i wouldn’t mind tanking now for a higher pick. we need the best player available in the draft. offense and defense needs help. maybe draft a coach? lol

  30. San Francisco Joe Says:

Defense was probably the biggest reason we lost this one but Koetter was completely outcoached today. He brought out his losing playbook today.

  31. lurker Says:

freaking falcons lost 38-0. coulda been worse. of course we get ours in week 17.

  32. Couch Fan Says:

And Lovie continues to underwhelm. Everytime he gets an oppertunity to show that he can do more than randomly have his team ready to play, his team takes a crap on the field. A perfect oppertunity wasted. Very disappointing.

  33. softastissueMcCoy93 Says:

Defense ends, corners, safeties, wr, kr, those are a lot of wholes to fill. What a let down today.
    Go Draft

  34. JWBUCS Says:

Bucs were flat on Offense and Defense all day…. Often Lack Luster! Love coaching was certainly questionable as well… Dropped passes at critical times is hurting this Offense badly… Ala Donte Dye…

Meanwhile, whats with the gashing and down right berating of people like McCoy and David… I thought this website was for Bucs fans… We do not need hot heads like ElioT… Shut this guy down… LaVontae David had a good day and we do not need the bashing… If you are not a fans of Tampa Bay then got all to yourself ElioT… Clean things up!

  35. dmatt Says:

One of the titles on this site yesterday read…”If we keep ourselves clean”, which referred to the number of penalties we’ve received.VJ said wiping up that mess will make the Bucs an elite football team. I say hat will not happen until Lovie comes clean with the team in general, and a few in particular i.e., ME and WGholston. Penalties and drops especially during crunch time are unacceptable and should be dealt with immediately. ME is going to once again apologize and say he should play smarter, of course he will until he’s held accountable for repeated bone head penalties that hurt his team, as you were…cause his team to lose. Nick Saban would chew this guy out.

  36. Bucs Fan Since '76 Says:

This is what a close, but not quite there yet team looks like. It’s frustrating for sure. We have a franchise QB, and RB, a good OL, and a solid stable of TE’s. We need WR’s. Dye and Evans with huge drops on what should have been the game tying drive. Dye shouldn’t be on the field, and ME has got to get over the drops.

This game is not on the offense overall. The Saints held a 37 to 23 minute edge in TOP. That’s why we lost, and that is on the D. Too many backups on the field. We need a solid defensive draft in 2016. That and we need to find the next VJax at WR in FA.

  37. Tampa Tony Says:

Wow, this team laid a big fat turd on my week!!!

No urgency passive like their loser head coach. This is not hater speak, it’s the F ing truth!!! 4 and 2 and you choose a FG? That’s a loser mindset

Best they go is 8-8 since loser Lovie gets out coached by any coach with half a brain or an aggressive streak

  38. JaMarcus Leafwhich Says:

Imagine if we had an accurate qb… Instead we have Lost on instead. I just wonder if he will ever throw for 300yds in a game, Marcus sure has! Savior my ball$

  39. pete Says:

How do Bucs forget that they have the 2nd leading rusher in NFL on their team???

  40. lurker Says:

look at the haters crawling out of the woodwork. someone turn the lights on, please, so they will scatter.

  41. BucFan20 Says:

Now for all those that wanted to throw the useless stats at me. Oh our defense is this. Our offense is that. Here is the STAT that counts like I have always said W-L. 6-7 now. I don’t care what you say. This defense sucks and has all year. They are LOST under Lovie. Other teams have injuries but are better and can cover passes and TACKLE!
Winston was past the rookie stage remember Lovie saying that. Shows how much he knows. Winston can’t win all the games by himself and anyone that thought he was going to put the team on his back and carry them week after week was foolish. This team is not close to contender ready.

  42. John McKillop Says:

@JWBUCS, I agree with you about ElioT and others on here that continually bash the Bucs, either you are a fan or not, if not find somewhere else to bitch. I thought the Bucs would win 6 games and they did, I didn’t think would make payoffs this year. Knowing they had a chance, that was a terrible way to come out and play today, still a lot of growing to do. The arrow for this team is pointing up, a couple more good drafts and they will be good for a long while. Go Bucs!

  43. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Nothing like a loss to bring out all the sissies….being a Buc fan isn’t for sissies.

We have plenty of money…..some really good young players….and yes, that includes ME13 & ASJ….we have all our draft picks….

    Things will improve….

  44. Clearwater Wes Says:

What’s the fix for me I am drunk to hide the pain but I need to get home.
They are not a good team yet.
A little ways to go yet, maybe 2 more very good drafts.

  45. Johnny "America's Commenter" Dejay Says:

When Winston does not have an outstanding performance, the Bucs are a very average team. I’m curious where his fiery leadership was today, in a winnable game with the post-season on the line? It looked like the stage was too big for him today, kinda like the Oregon Rose Bowl playoff game about a year ago.

To continue Winston’s growth, the Bucs have to get some reliable receivers and tight ends this offseason. VJax is breaking down with age, ASJ is a chandelier, and Evans is a head case with hands of stone. I wouldn’t mind seeing wholesale changes across the board at WR and TE.

  46. grafikdetail Says:

all you idiots have been MIA when the Bucs were playing good now here yall come to complain LOL i’m pissed too but as bad as they played today they were still had a chance to tie it at the end… smh support the team or get a new one… hate bandwagon azz fans

  47. Buccfan37 Says:

Brees with a subpar, yet capable defense can out score most any NFL team. The running game worked a bit. The Bucs wide open spaces were too big to miss. Depressing loss in the Den of Depression lingers.

  48. FortMyersDave Says:

Joe the Bucs were treated this weak by everyone, including the national media, as an up and coming team, the favorite today that was expected to plaster the aints. I think they let the headlines get to their head and never got it together. it is that simple. now that the playoffs are off the table (please don’t give us a bunch of unlikely scenarios Joe) the Bucs just need to avoid losing again in St Louis, but you know what? I expect this team to be 6-8 Friday as the Bucs are an improved team but this loss will be a big letdown and the Bucs never seem to play well against the Lambs since Jeff Fisher has taken over as their coach. Simple goal right now; 0.500 or at least avoid 10 losses…. Yuck, what a buzzkill today was!

  49. FortMyersDave Says:

Lurker; no way the Bucs tank for picks. Lovie will think 6-10 could still get him canned and every fan will go on a tirade. I say they gun for respectability and a 0.500 record as the difference between picking 10th at 6-10 and picking 16th at 8-8 is not the same as picking 1st at 2-14 or 6th at 4-12….. Still the Bucs could end up 6-10 w/o tanking if they play like today down the stretch. Remember Schiano’s bunch in 2012? They were 6-5 or 6-6 and bent over to the eagles if memory serves me right; this game reminds me a lot of that one as far as sucking the life out of a team that had some hope…..

  50. orlbucfan Says:

Buc Fan Since ’76 meet Buc Fan Since ’79! I’m glad to see you and a few other true Bucs fans. The bellyachers and bandwagoneers are out in force. Famous J has a rookie day vs. Brees who’s eyeballing the HOF. I’m surprised the final score was so close. The way Brees was throwing and Marquis Colston was catching, I figured it would be Aints 42, Bucs 20. Aints and the Dixie Chicks (who didn’t even show up today against Carolina) have got major team problems. Bucs don’t. I have said 8-8 all year. This is a vastly better team which will be on fire next season. I’ll be at one of the games (I hope). Go Bucs!!!!!

  51. godzilla13 Says:

$52M in cap space available? Let me add to that. Release Alrerraun Verner, Henry Melton, Bruce Carter, George Johnson, Chris Conte, Evan Smith, Vincent Jackson, Gosder Cherilus, Bobby Rainey, Tony McDaniel, Logan Mankins, Major Wright and Brandon Myers. Total = $51M + 52M (2016 under the cap) = $103,000,000. Start over and buy every quality FA available and fire the entire coaching staff. See if there are any takers to trade GMC, LVD, Mike Evans and Jameis Winston to increase draft picks. Then move the team to LA so we can hire the coaches.

  52. grafikdetail Says:

    lay off the crack godzilla13

  53. mike10 Says:

“have a lot of growing up to do”

    agreed!

  54. Old TMoGuy Says:

2015 Buccaneers … not as bad as 2014, but think about it — who have they beaten? Answer NO ONE. Not one team they have beaten has a winning record. Now, what were we expecting? The Bucs have the easiest schedule in the league this year!
Winston and the receivers are better — especially when they don’t drop well-thrown balls. Martin and Sims are looking good. It goes without saying no pressure on a quarterback as good as Brees is and the result will be bad. PENALTIES — Winston cannot overcome these setbacks week after week of mental failures. The first play of the game cost the Bucs 45 yards! Yards that are always hard to come by.
At least not making the playoffs will allow the team a higher position in next year’s draft of D-linemen and a bunch of defensive backs!
