“They Do Stupid Things”

It seems, sometimes, Lovie's players on defense don't get it.

It seems, sometimes, Lovie’s players on defense don’t get it.

Interesting back and forth yesterday afternoon when Woody Cummings of the Tampa Tribune made his weekly appearance on Miller and Moulton on WWCN-FM 99.3 in Fort Myers.

Cummings opened the segment noting that if the Bucs, specifically Lovie Smith’s defense, didn’t play with their collective heads up their posteriors, the Bucs may just be in second place in the NFC South and in the thick of a playoff run.

But the knot-headed mistakes are why the Bucs are 3-5 and on the outside looking in at a postseason berth.

“If this team could focus on the fundamentals and avoid pre-snap and post-whistle penalties, they might be, what, 6-2 or 7-1?” Cummings said. “They sure as heck wouldn’t be 3-5. They are in games. They are in position to win and they do stupid things. Or, they can’t execute the basic fundamentals of the game. It is maddening. It is absolutely maddening with this team. I don’t get it.”

When Cummings was asked if that is a reflection on Lovie, Cummings noted it is a combination of factors including lack of talent on the defensive side of the ball and just playing downright dumb football.

    7-1?
    6-2?
    Wow, that was a reach

  2. buknekidd Says:

How is it a reach? We would have won Houston and NY if Mike Evans could catch, fundamentals would have won us versus Skins.

We deserved to lose vs Titans and Winston lost the game for us vs Panthers. 6-2.

    Go Winston. STUD!

  3. BuccsFanatical33 Says:

Not really 6—2 is legit other than week 1 and week 4 we were in position to win all the other games

  4. 813bucboi Says:

how is that a reach? we should’ve beat hou,was and nyc…we were in reach on car but we just had a meltdown…the only game where we were out of it from the jump was vs. tenn…if we play mistake free football on both sides of the ball(no turnovers, no dumb penalties) we have a chance to go 6-2 from here on out…we have to generate pressure on the qb and play solid in the secondary…GO BUCS!!!

  5. loggedontosay Says:

Despite the penalties and the drops, if the Martin and Simms has not fumbled the ball away, the Bucs win that game against the Giants.

    Thank you!

These players need to be held accountable. I will cheer for them until they are not on the team, but if you watch the film it the small things that kill this defense. Bad drops, poorly ran stunts, missed tackles, and penalties. It shows a lack of discipline and selfishness on the players. A good team would have cut several of these players by now. It is obvious, we don’t have the talent to this.

  7. Brent Says:

Nutty Cummings, I’d say Bucs are where they deserve to be 3-5. Just because the Giants and Houston games were close doesn’t mean they should have wo them. If you don’t blame penalties on coaching I’m not sure what you would blame on coaches? That’s totally discipline and mental. Also, I’m ok with lovie for now, but the performance of the defense and our lack of discipline are definitly his fault. Anybody can play defense with a highly talented unit. The fact is, this defense is as bad or worse than last years unit.

  8. Couch Fan Says:

Poor coaching and lack of being prepared leads to lousy execution. Lovie fan boys will look past that fact though and try to blame it on a lack of talent.

  9. mike Says:

he says lack of talent?? lack of talent is not responsible for pre snap and post whistle penalties. Its either dumb player or bad coaching or a combination.

Guys its not just on or the other, its Lovies staff and its also a lack of talent. And Lovie can be blamed for both, especially his staff. I wana like Joe Cullen, Gil Byrd and esp Hardy, but im not seeing results. As far as the talent, its hard to blame Lovie for that. No coach was going to offer a quick fix. And other than Revis, this team was pretty empty. Especially on offense. But this team is growing so I cant complain. Sure I want a contender, but its a process. A often LONG process. That 2-14 was a necessary evil and here we are looking improved and certainly better than we were the past two years. I actually have hope for the first time in a long time. witb Jameis, who we can thank Lovie and Licht for, we can maybe have some expectations next year, depending on how this year plays out.

dumb assed penaties are the calling card of this version of
buc ball. it sucks to watch it and talk about it.
who’s fault it is. is up for debate…but the bucs do it every game
    penalties = losses

  12. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Players that have less talent and players that are getting beat make mistakes…..trying too hard contributes also.
The only way coaching comes into play is fear….Lovie has now started to bench players/cut players…..and chewed one out on the sideline (Spence)……that fear will eventually cause players to develop the necessary discipline,
Should have been done earlier…..but better late than never.

If the Bucs were to win all of the remaining games, make it in the playoff, and win the super bowl, you still would not like him. It is one thing to irrational after a loss, but it is another thing to be irrational after a cool down period. If Lovie can take undrafted player slow down the Giants offense, only losing the game to turnovers, then he is a good football coach.

  14. Couch Fan Says:

Oh stop. There is nothing irrational about being down on a coach with a 5-19 record. Lol. They didnt slow the Giants down. The Gaints dominated are defense by methodically driving down the field on every single drive. The Defense did not force a punt in over 11 quarters I believe it is. But hey…. let’s continue to believe Lovie has shown us enought to believe he is good enough to win.

  15. Couch Fan Says:

    Our defense*

  16. JAB83 Says:

@Cluch, Lovie has shown me a lot of things that give me reason to believe he is a serviceable coach…. However its the things I don’t see but show up in the form of good results that make me believe he is a good coach… Wins and loses are a formality of the unseen coaching factor…. To fix.something that was a train wreck as fast as you hope is way to optimistic even for me!!!!

So this leads me to believe that what you are showing me makes you a serious FAN OF DEPRESSION…. or your Trolling…. Can’t keep demanding the best when your not will to give yours….. Be a Fan of Inspiration and look for the right things to support…. Be the12 the man…. Stop with you oh illinformed insight…. So much positive to be excited about….

Coaching is the least of our worries!!,! That’s a big deal in the grand scheme of things… What we need is a few more drafts like our last two and for the guys that are suppose to perform to perform

    It
    Really
    Is
    As
    Simple
    As
    That
    REALLY….

    ————————————–

So the fact he is doing worse than the last coach with a team that was worse before he got here, according to you, means nothing? Hmm.. and I’m the ill imformed one?… Keep shaking those pom poms for the Imcompetent one.

  18. Couch Fan Says:

with a team that is better than before he got here*

The Carolina and Titan games were the only 2 which the Bucs did not have an opportunity to win which means that they’ve flushed away 3 potential wins already: the Skins, Texans and this NYG game last Sunday. The Skins game is on Lovie; no way they should have blown a 24-0 lead, idiotic coaching from all 3 phases of the game (offense, ST and D)…. Now the other 2 would have been nail biters if the coaches did their job, penalties were minimized and Brinzda made his FGs in Houston; so yeah the Bucs should be 4-4 at the worst and likely 5-3 or even 6-2 if the coaching staff was at least average. Joe says he is looking for improvement; again I have to say it is showing up on the offense but i really do not see it anywhere else except in the kicking game where Barth is getting the job done; I would love to know who signed off on Brinzda Joe; was it just O’Dea, O’Dea and Licht, Licht and Lovie or all 3 of these geniuses???? And Joe: the defense is worst then it ever was under Frazier last year or with Schiano in 2013; this can’t be glossed over even if the O manages to get Lovie his 6 wins and a life preserver….
